SVU's Dean Winters Lands Lead in CBS' Battle Creek Crime Drama Series

Dean Winters CBS PilotSVU lawman Dean Winters has landed one of the lead roles on the CBS crime drama Battle Creek.

RELATED | CBS Greenlights Detective Drama From Creators of Breaking Bad and House

From Breaking Bad‘s Vince Gilligan and House‘s David Shore, the project — which got a series order back in September — follows two detectives with very different world views as they labor clean up the semi-mean streets of Battle Creek, Michigan, in the face of a complete lack of resources.

Winters will play Detective Russ Agnew, a smart, tough and pragmatic guy who gets results but with whom no one wants to partner because of his reputation for being “Mayhem” mean and gruff. His TV partner has yet to be cast.

The ensemble also includes Kal Penn (House), Janet McTeer (The White Queen), Edward Fordham Jr. (Cuts) and Aubrey Dollar (Point Pleasant? But definitely Guiding Light).

Winters’ TV credits also include 30 Rock, Oz, Rescue Me and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

  1. Holly says:

I hope this doesn’t mean he’ll no longer be on SVU. I love Brian Cassidy and would absolutely hate to see him and Olivia break up. Hopefully since his role on SVU is reoccurring, he’ll be able to do both. I’ll check out his new show for him. I can never have too much Dean Winters on my tv screen.

    • David says:

Liv ignored his call on Svu this week so maybe he’s being phased out.

    • leigh says:

Yeah…i think this means his days on SVU will be numbered. But it is great news for Dean.

    • Tyler says:

Yeah hopefully it’s not the end of Bensidy. Even if he doesn’t make appearances, as long as they’re still together that’ll be fine for us Bensidy fans.

I hope that even though he’s obligated now to Battle Creek he can still do a show or two. Just depends on if he wants to make guest spots on SVU, if he can leave on good terms, and as long as the writers don’t do anything stupid.

      • Nancy says:

Amen. I don’t care if we don’t see them together as long as i know they ARE together. It’s not like this show was about the relationships that much anyways. Even Elliot’s wife rarely was in the show. I know Dean said this season that he hoped they kept him around until the very end.And so far this show is only 13 episodes. So I would hope they leave it open for him to come back if this show does not make it

  2. Nicolet says:

Congrats Dean. Hope you have a long successful run on your own show.

  3. Don J says:

Matt, this was already ordered straight to series back in September as reported by Deadline. CBS committed to 13 episodes.

  4. Steve Ungrey says:

Point Pleasant AND Guiding Light, Matt. Congratulations to Aubrey. Underrated actress who deserves to be seen more on TV and in movies. And Mayhem comes to Battle Creek! lol

    • Kate says:

Also she was on Women’s Murder Club as the cub reporter. She held her own with Angie Harmon, Laura Harris and Paula Newsome, which is no mean feat.

      • Steve Ungrey says:

Definitely. ABC should have kept that show, but that was on during the period when the network didn’t like to keep any new show on past one year. We lost Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, October Road, Men in Trees, etc., because of this.

  5. Ali says:

This is great news. He’s looking a tad gaunt lately, hope he’ll bulk up a bit for the role. I’ve enjoyed everything he’s been in.

  6. Nancy says:

Will he still be a guest star on SVU? I hope so. I love him on the show.

  7. Good for Dean Winters!
I loved his character in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

  8. Tyler says:

Always liked his character of Brian Cassidy on SVU even from back in season 1. It’s not the end of Bensidy until it’s over. Have faith.

Hopefully Dean can shine in his new role as Det. Agnew and if not….he can always come back to SVU.

  9. majamabe says:

Hopefully, he will able to make guest appearances on SVU. He and Liv just moved in together and have a really nice place.

  10. Sheila says:

I hope Cassidy gets murdered horribly. No offense to the actor, but Cassidy has been a pointlessly stupid character from the beginning.

    • Nancy says:

And how exactly will that help Olivia? She is fragile as is. Having her boyfriend murdered would send her over the edge. Is that really what you want?
