Scoop: Matthew Perry-Fronted Odd Couple Remake Snags Official Pilot Order at CBS

Get More: Pilots

MATTHEW PERRYCBS’ Matthew Perry-fronted update of The Odd Couple inched closer to reality on Tuesday via an official pilot order, TVLine has learned.

The multi-camera comedy project, based on Neil Simon’s classic play and exec produced and co-written by Perry himself (with Frasier‘s Joe Keenan), follows two mismatched roommates: the messy Oscar Madison (Perry) and neat freak Felix Unger.

The Odd Couple began as a Broadway show in 1965 with actors Art Carney (as Felix) and Walter Matthau (as Oscar), who reprised his role for the 1968 movie opposite Jack Lemmon. A TV series adaptation, starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, later ran for five seasons on ABC.

  • I’ve liked all of Matthew Perry’s shows since Friends ended. Hopefully this will finally be the one to last more than one season.

    • I agree – I see Mathew Perry as Felix and maybe Matt LeBlanc or Charlie Sheen as Oscar.

  • I wonder, will they just use the Friends cast humming the theme song for The Odd Couple (in Central Perk) as the theme song for this update. ;)

    • As much as I love that, he might feel it’s too close to Monk. In a perfect world, it’d be great to reteam him with Bradley Whitford. Studio 60 may’ve fallen apart, but they were an awesome bromance. That was some of the best chemistry on tv. The Trophy Wife’s in danger of not being renewed. I don’t see Brad doing the Odd Couple in 2nd position though unless they were willing to reshoot the whole thing if his show got picked up. Probably don’t wanna fool with that. There are some great actors that might be free if their shows don’t make it. I wonder if any of them are being considered.

    plays Felix.

  • I’m not surprised that CBS gave The Odd Couple remake a pilot order because Matthew Perry is involved. Now the show can cast Felix Unger now and i agree with an above post that it should be Tony Shalhoub.

  • I think Sean Hayes would be great for the Felix role.

  • How about Schwimmer as Felix? If nothing else it would bring a big audience initially to see the reunion of the two.

Comment by Jerry V – February 25, 2014 02:14 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • David Schwimmer has his own pilot in development at ABC for the fall.

  • Does it have to be multi cam? I would much rather see Perry in a drama show again on a network like AMC.

  • I think Trent Dawson (ex-Henry, ATWT, guest-starred on NCIS: Los Angeles, Homeland, & The Good Wife) would be perfect for the role of Felix. But I’d also like to see him have a major dramatic role. I think both he and Matthew Perry are often overlooked for dramatic roles and stereotyped as strictly comedic actors when they’re both very versatile. JMHO.

  • Sam Huntington might make a good Felix. The age difference could be used to good advantage, too – two guys from different generations, both single through divorce. Plenty of fodder there for a series.

    • Exactly who I was thinking of because HIMYM has finished its final season. Both can do great comedy, even physical comedy, Matthew Perry and NPH together would be a lock for renewal. NPH is 4 years younger than Perry but I don’t see that as a problem because you’d have all the Friends fans and HIMYM fans watching the pilot if nothing else.

MP has been so unlucky with his post Friends shows because Mr Sunshine was good albeit wacky and Go On had so much potential, it should have at least had a 13 episode second season. As for Studio 60, how that didn’t get renewed was a mystery.

Whoever they pick as Felix, I wish MP all the best. But choosing NPH would be legen… wait for it… dary.

  • Love Matthew Perry, but this is just SO unnecessary. Some remakes are just unnecessary. Watch and enjoy the classic! Do something new Hollywood!!!

  • So anyone thinking that this might be a 3/3, in terms of show/network cancellations for Perry? I hope not, but most of his stuff seems dead on arrival/doomed. This is CBS though and they seem to have a way with viewers.

  • I love Matthew Perry but this play/tv show has been done to death and I’m afraid the show will get an early death knell too. This guy is so talented and has such good comedic timing, I’d love to see him get something meaty.

  • So what, this will be the 77th comedy starring Perry and lasting a season at best?

Comment by dee123 – February 25, 2014 07:05 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Since they’re casting Matthew Perry against type, they should do the same for the Felix character. How about someone you’d least expect, such as Will Sasso, Horatio Sanz, Will Forte or one of the guys from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, now that it’s ending its run.

Comment by Jon – February 25, 2014 08:01 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • If Trophy Wife doesn’t get a renewal, Bradley Whitford would be perfect, those two guys have such good on screen chemistry, in both West Wing for the part Perry was in it and on Studio 60 they where awesome together, miss that show :( would be great to see them together again.

  • I’m french so i’m not familiar with the original but Hamish Linklater could be great, he was funny in Old Christine. Eric McCormack would be good too but he already has a show.

Comment by Chris – February 26, 2014 03:38 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Hamish Linklater is in the Crazy Ones with Robin Williams which is expected to be renewed for a second season. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but Robin Williams on Thursday nights is always a treat and I hope it gets another year because it’s such a great show.
