Get More: Sports

Winter Olympics 2014 Sochi GamesImagine careening down a frozen mountain, trying to maintain control as your skis fly over not only the natural terrain but a host of obstacles placed in your path.

Now imagine doing it with a bunch of competitors hot on your booted heels, and you’ve got a sense of what ski cross is like — and possibly a newfound respect for Canada’s Marielle Thompson, who bested her competition in the breakneck Olympic event Friday.

We don’t use that term loosely — especially not after a Russian racer literally broke her back during while training on the dangerous course last week, and two athletes had horrifying accidents during the quarterfinal round.

But Thompson, who was third coming into the final run, got the jump on the field and rode her success all the way to a gold medal.

What Olympic event held your attention on Friday? Was it Mikaela Shiffrin (pictured at right) and her slalom victory? Short and long track speed skating? The U.S.-Canada men’s hockey match? Sound off in the comments!

    • Oh come on! Yeah we won, but it was a pretty disappointing game. I mean, the TWO best hockey teams in the world were battling it out on the rink and only one goal was scored in the entire game? Maybe my expectations were high because of the wome’s game but I was left feeling pretty disappointed and unsatisfied. A final score of 1-0? That is just SAD.

      • :S you clearly don’t know very much about hockey…. This was a really tight, well played game that could have gone either way right up until the very end.

  • It was a long night… I watched the ski cross from the seeding round at 11:45pm through the medal race just before 3am, but it was worth it to see my friend Kelsey Serwa score a silver medal!

Canada’s gold in men’s curling was also awesome! :)

  • Jamie Benn’s goal as Canada shut down the US in the men’s hockey semifinal. Actually, the whole game was just crazy good!

    • I agree! Both teams battled hard and the fact that only 1 goal was made (albeit for my boys! :D ) shows how good a game it was. Well done Canada and Us! Now onto Sunday for the gold medal game. I don’t know if I can take it!! :D
