Exclusive Bones Sneak Peek: Will the Almighty Dollar Come Between Booth and Brennan?

Get More: Exclusive, First Look, Video

As legendary ’80s philosopher Cyndi Lauper once postulated, money… money changes everything.

And while that may be putting too fine a point on the predicament Booth and Brennan find themselves in this Friday on Bones (8/7c, Fox), it’s clear that the topic of dollars and cents — Brennan’s higher income bracket, in particular — will be the source of some tension moving forward.

  • FBI agents at his level make more than $75,000. The average annual salary is $89,930. Those in Washington DC get a 24.22% cost of living adjustment, and Booth with his years in service probably makes close to $100,000 or more. That’s not much compared to Bones’ but it is not as sad as they make it out to be here.

    • EXCELLENT point…it is sad how Bones down plays what an actual FBI agent earns, their worth just to make a storyline between B&B on Bones. Booth makes a substantial amount, it would be nice the writers would acknowledge that, for years now.

    • Exactly – It’s not more than he’d be making in a year. I wish they’d stop making David’s character such a douche about stuff like this – Oh, Booth is soo traditional, Oh Brennan has no common sense (when she goes around insulting people – that’s not a lack of social skills, but stupidity). It’s going to be the tenth season, can we get off these old fallback storylines and show some growth in their characters…?

      • Actually, Bones has Asperger’s–part of that is being very blunt indeed and socially a mess. I should know as I too am an Aspie.

        • I don’t believe it’s ever been stated on the show that Bones has Aspergers.

          • They don’t want to label it on the show because that forces them to stick to a rigid definition instead of allowing them creative freedom but both Hart Hanson and Emily say she has a version of it

    • Has it occurred to anyone that Booth is just exaggerating to make a point? Jeez…

      • Not to mention that if he was thinking after taxes, it’s about right. Off point but on my mind is that Brennan is so insufferable now [think Sheldon Cooper] I watch in spite of her and the less Brennan centric the episode, the better I like it.

Comment by Stormy – January 30, 2014 12:01 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • Much of this has to do with which writer is writing her. Some are far more sympathetic to her character (read female writers) and soften her and some make her an insufferable joke. All of this adds up to a lack of consistency in which her character varies wildly from episode to episode.

    • More than an FBI agent with his time on the job would be making – no.

More than he’d taking home (after taxes, FICA, etc.) – almost certainly.

    • Are you factoring in that he is probably still paying child support for Parker?

  • Booth & Brennan can have their OWN accounts and have a JOINT bank account to pay bills, buy family stuff etc. from…Don’t make a big deal about Bones writers. C’mon

Comment by J – January 30, 2014 09:20 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I too find it hard to believe after 10 years with the FBI that Booth is not making more than 75K, but I get it, she makes a lot more than him! Expecting Booth to work through his insecurities here. I like Brennan’s attitude, very willing to share!

Comment by Lois – January 30, 2014 09:26 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Actually according to The Man on Death Row in season 1, Booth had already been in the FBI for seven years which makes him a 16-year veteran who would make a great deal more than 75K.

Comment by EL – January 30, 2014 09:44 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • After taxes that is probably more than what he makes.

Comment by bountypeaches – January 30, 2014 07:51 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • This is just another way for the Bones writers to marginalize Booth, like he’s not good enough, He gave her her bro and dad back, Christine and a family, keeps her grounded and helps her realize the important things in life. Money isn’t everything, haven’t we learned that with the Hodgela? Maybe Booth should talk to Ang and see how she has adjusted to marrying a billionaire and now losing most of it.

Comment by catherine – January 30, 2014 09:26 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • The Bones writers have no clue about this stuff. The Hodgins fortune story strains the shows credibility to the limit as anyone with a vague idea of how banking and finance works could tell you.

Comment by Matt – January 30, 2014 09:40 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Couldn’t agree more. Hodgins losing his entire fortune in minutes by Pelant was a joke. They made him (Pelant) to be a super arch villain with super computer skills and could do anything with a transister and a phone wire.

  • I guess the new writers haven’t seen all the other episodes in which how much Bones makes through her book sales has been brought up. It is a old subject. Her wealth was one of the topics that came up way back when they decided to get married. The writers trying to bring it up now is pretty lame, writing wise. Must be hard trying to come up with topics to try and put the marriage in some sort of crisis to rehash this topic.

Comment by Rusty – January 30, 2014 09:42 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • The funny thing is you can go right to the FBI page and see a pay example for a first-year special agent:
    .
A new Special Agent assigned to Washington, D.C. would make a base salary of $43,441 (GS-10, step 1 on the Law Enforcement Officers’ salary table) + locality pay of $7,602 (based on Washington, D.C.’s locality adjustment of 17.50%) + availability pay of $12,761 (25% of base + locality) for a total salary of $63,804 their first year.

Booth has some 12+ years in. He would be making more then $75k. The writers should have reviewed that a little more carefully.

    • The only explaination I can think of is that he’s referring to what he makes after paying taxes. Maybe?

  • You can always rely on TV Line readers to suck all the joy out of any situation!! Seriously taking away the amount issue I thought it was a really nice scene. Neither of them was being a jerk and they hadn’t discussed the money issue for a while so I expect it to be resolved in this episode.

Comment by Smiley – January 30, 2014 10:06 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • JFC. people are actually getting hung up on the 75,000 figure thrown out there??? That’s not the important thing…just that Brennan makes way more than he does.
And it’s only natural that they would talk about the money issue eventually.
Jeez, every time I tell myself to stay away from the comments on tvline…but I just don’t learn, sigh.

    • It’s nice to have a little accuracy and continuity in things you watch.
      .
And let’s keep it in perspective. This is the same Brennan who spent part of her 7-figure book advance to restore a bridge to some dying town to try and increase its tourism.
      .
The idea that they would be having salary issues is pointless when Booth has known for years that Bones is a multi-millionaire.
      .
The one thing this show has done more and more recently is create these false emotional tensions at the beginning of the episode that all get washed away with an “I love you” and a kiss at the end of the episode.

    • I don’t think it’s a big deal, but when I heard him say that, I was immediately thought, “huh”? Surely he makes more than that. Apparently, I’m not the only one.

  • I wish that the writer’s and the proucer’s would stop going down this path with Bones & Booth. This subject has been covered a couple of times and I would think that if it had bothered Booth so much, he would have never married her. So please, if they are going down this money path again, it sounds like the Producer’s want this marriage to fail. Is this what they are up to for season 10 ?????

Comment by Pat – January 30, 2014 12:40 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Or maybe the wrtiers don’t think viewers want to see two people making 6 figures or more arguing about who is richer.

  • Like NCIS, though for different reasons I’m sure, Bones has been refreshed the way I see it. Glad they’re renewed. Friday was a tad better, not as insanely crowded as Monday is for me.

How ever much money Booth makes or doesn’t make is not going to make or break the show… it’s not that serious just enjoy the show

  • It’s interesting that no one brings up the idea that if Booth made more money than Tempe instead of the other way around, this would be a non-issue and they’d have moved into the type of house Brennan wanted in the first place. Booth needs to grow up. He knew what kind of money she made from almost the beginning. Why do men think they have, somehow, been castrated when their wives are the primary breadwinners? I get it in this show because the writers have stereotyped Booth as an old-fashioned “good ole boy” rather than the well-educated man most FBI agents really are. But I do believe most men in law enforcement got into that field because they want to “take care of others” which does mean they can tend to be paternalistic, as Booth is.

    • My goodness, the whole point of this video was the fact that she ‘lost’ a $75k check and was just ‘oh well, was wondering where that went’ about it. Of COURSE he knows how much she makes, but he still can’t fathom LOSING a years worth of pay…

    • AGREED she is getting worse instead of meowing. Get real writers. She’s not from outer space. So she had a rough childhood. So did I but you can learn from it and from people. Grow up and learn kindness and consideration for other people’s feelings

  • although i really like B&B ,i hate that they always show brennan as the smarter one, booth is the FBI agent and he can’t be stupid like the way they show!!!brennan always know every thing .do everything better, etc… and oh c’mon booth even don’t know how to play chess???!!!that’s absurd…and the whole money thing…,i think they are ruining the balance between the 2 characters that can be handeled way more pleasing…like the earlier seasons…

  • Booth was probably exaggerating a bit on the “it’s more than I make in a year”, or he was looking at after taxes or whatever… and I don’t think it’s that he doesn’t realize Bones is “rich”, and that he’s not used to it on most levels… but to see someone just … forget… about a $75,000 check? that’s a whole ‘nother level.
