The Americans: Cast, Producers on Season 2's 'Shocking' (and Spoilery) Sex Scene

THE AMERICANS -- Safe House -- Episode 9 (Airs Wednesday, April 3, 10:00 pm e/p) -- Pictured: (L-R) Matthew Rhys as Philip Jennings, Keri Russell as Elizabeth Jennings -- CR: Craig Blankenhorn/FXThe Americans cast and producers had sex on the brain at the Television Critics Association winter press tour Tuesday — specifically an explicit (and rather spoilery) scene from the Feb. 26 Season 2 premiere involving Philip, Elizabeth and another character who shall remain nameless.

“We wanted to depict the most powerful, shocking and mildly humorous [sequence possible],” exec producer Joe Weisberg told reporters (in front of a red-faced Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell). “We actually talked a lot about that moment and what would be right and what would be true. We discussed every possible [sexual] position.”

Elaborating on the show’s myriad carnal pairings, Russell noted, “The good thing about the sexuality of the show, at least where I’m coming at it from, is that it’s not this big, sweeping romantic movie where you have to be so in love and so beautiful and so sexy. You’re usually using the sexuality, at least in the spy end, to get something. There is kind of a freedom in that.”

Other tidbits from the panel…

* Expect to see a less vulnerable Martha as she embarks upon her relationship with her “husband” Clark. “We were always intrigued by that crazy, insane idea that this fake marriage, could it be good for Martha?” pondered fellow EP Weisberg.

* The producers confirmed that despite her commitment to CBS’ The Millers, Margo Martindale will be back as Claudia for “several episodes.”

Am I the only one who was wishing that the Millers would get axed so that Claudia would be back full time?

  2. Linda says:

It wasn’t like she was in every episode to begin with. I like her in the Millers and hope they get a renewal. I’m sure they’ll be able to work around her schedule. She’s a great actress!

  3. spmsmith says:

You know Margo Martindate is GOOOOD when the article is about a threesome with two hot thirtysomethings and all the comments are discussing whether or not the show can get a middle-aged actress more screentime….

  4. Sarah says:

I love Margo!!! Want to see more of her.

  5. JBC says:

The actors and storyline has been great. I really don’t think they need more graphic sex scenes. I disliked that in the first season. It was a bit too much and story could be told the same. Less is more. IMO

  6. Patrick Maloney says:

So there are three people in the sex scene? Hmm. That’s more than EW reported about the show

  7. Holly says:

Please let it be Paige walking in on her parents. Too funny!

  8. SM says:

    Matthew Rhys is not hot

  9. Mikael says:

I can’t wait for Season 2! I’m so glad to hear that Claudia will be back.

  10. RichieS says:

As a former fan of Smallville the mention of a sex scene between characters named “Martha” and “Clark” fills me with disgust.

    • Donal King says:

First, I thought the “sex” scene between the Kerri and Matthew (with the intrusion of Paige) was not only appropriate but among the most tasteful and “real” as I have seen on TV. Kerri is very attractive and the scene was artistic as well as important to the story. More shows should use this as a model of how to portray “sex” in an way that is not gratuitous or raunchy, but sensual.
