Duck Dynasty Clan: There's No Show Without Phil -- Patriarch Suspended for Anti-Gay Remarks

Duck Dynasty Family Threatens to QuitDuck Dynastys Robertson family is “disappointed” to see A&E suspend patriarch Phil Robertson for making anti-gay comments that were, they acknowledged, “unfiltered” and “coarse” yet “grounded in the teachings of the Bible.”

As such, pending Phil’s return to the hit reality series, the family says, “We cannot imagine the show going forward without [him] at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty.” (Their complete statement appears below.)

In a new GQ profile, the 67-year-old Duck Commander founder (photo, far right) called being gay a “sin” and compared it to bestiality. “It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus,” he told the mag. “But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical… Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”

As Robertson came under fire for such remarks, his cable employer responded by saying in a statement: “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

In a TVLine reader poll, 67 percent of respondents said A&E was wrong to suspend Robertson.

Duck Dynasty Season 4 this past August premiered to 11.8 million total viewers — a record for a cable reality series — and went on to have its highest rated cycle to date.

The Robertson family’s complete statement, posted to their website on Thursday night, follows:

We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E’s decision.

We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate.

We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty.

Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.

I don’t get why this man is not entitled to his opinion. I think intolerance is going both ways nowadays. Why does every community has to go in an uproar the minute somebody says anything that could be remotely seen as anti-anything. I mean so the man thinks being gay is a sin – this is not a first – anyone who went to sunday school has heard that- AE protected their behind from the LGBT community as they new the uproar from that community would be felt. I just think that we should not be so offended about things like that if we are as modern as we say we are. Not everyone is going to like everything, people are entitled to their opinion and being a celebrity or in the public eye should not strip you of that right.

He is entitled to his opinion. HIs opinions have nothing to do with the network beyond the fact that he violated his contract by airing his views in the way that he did. Every CEO in America exhibits the ubiquity of this practice – the nonsense gibberish that the CEO of Barilla recently illustrated so well. You get PAID to keep you mouth shut in the press – it’s part of the contract. You get to have all the bigoted, irrational, bizarre, and ill-informed options that you can manage; you just don’t get to gibber on about them in the press and reflect badly on the show it’s owners, or the network.

Lol. So intolerance is only okay when it goes your bigoted way? Do you even read what you write? He’s entitled to his opinion and he freely gave it. Just because you have an opinion, doesn’t mean everyone will agree with you or that it isn’t so inflammatory that your boss fires you for it.

Bigoted people think they should be able to walk around spouting hate and ignorance without consequence. Get a clue.

  2. Man this thread is hilarious.

Best of all is this “ajintexas” person getting irate about people being labeled rednecks, and then proceeding to post a bunch of extremely stupid posts about constitutional protections … for what, reality TV stars? From their employers? What an … well … redneck.

Keep it up, TVLine. For a site run by at least a couple GLBT members, you’re doing a fabulous job of drawing in some of the most toxic bigots and knuckle-draggers I’ve ever seen on a TV website … and letting them have their platform. Nice job!

If companies can fire you for having views that they do not approve of, then is it ok for them to fire people who have premarital sex or use birth control? Somewhere, we have to draw the line as to how much control companies can have over their employees’ lives outside of work. Otherwise, welcome to our new masters – management.

    • WTActualF says:

Um no, that’s a logic fail. If you represent your company and give an interview where you spout off racist and homophobic nonsense, then yeah, your employer is going to fire you. They aren’t watching you have sex. And besides the point what’s wrong with premarital sex or birth control anyway?

      Religious extremists are scary.

Only when GQ broadcasts a video of that premarital sex…..

The fact that children watch them killing animals is disturbing. They should be on a hunting channel where they be blocked. They made their fortune. Let them fade from the limelight. Where were the free speech people when Howard Stern was sent packing? No more Duck Dynasty. And, please, A&E, Rodeo Girls? Really? You used to bring us quality shows. What has happened to our networks? Even the History channel bailed on us.

  5. Bear says:

So in all your opinions is just fine for a guy to say he likes a penis in his anus, and describe the entire operation in detail, but the minute a “White Redneck” says that is wrong and against God you all shun and attack him personally?

Do you not see your own hypocrisy? Are you so blinded by your ideals and leanings that you can’t just say “Well you are entitled to your opinion.” and let it go at that?

Phil Robertson was ambushed by a sensationalist reporter who ask the question knowing full well this type of backlash would occur, you NONE of you see it for what it is. And I am not going to tell you, you should be able to figure it out now that it has been pointed out.

    • WTActualF says:

Another logic fail. Please give me an example of a famous person saying “I like my penis in another man’s anus”. Who talks like that? These extremists are too funny. Bet you anything, if any of them actually tried buttsecks, they might actually like it. On a side note, I really feel sorry for their wives. How boring their sex lives must be.

Will GOD take care of your horrendous grammar?

    • WTActualF says:

This comment ranks up there amongst some of the craziest I’ve read so far. This is so entertaining. I bet it’s the first time some if these people have actually written anything since they “gradumated” high school.
