On TV this Wednesday: TNT’s Mob City gets its guns blazing, Saturday Night Live yuks it up under the mistletoe, ABC reveals a hidden Super Fun Night and Kirstie debuts with a mother of a surprise. As a supplement to TVLine’s original features (linked within), here are 10 programs to keep on your radar.
8 pm The Middle (ABC) | Frankie and Mike’s romantic weekend of house-sitting for her sister goes awry when the technologically advanced home gets the best of them.
8 pm Christmas in Rockefeller Center (NBC) | Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Toni Braxton and Jewel are among the acts lined up to ring in the holiday season with the lighting of the giant tree. (Note: Some NBC affiliates will air an additional live hour of the special at 7 pm.)
9 pm SNL Christmas (NBC) | You know what would be a real Christmas miracle? If the annual special got rid of that annoying Gilly framing device.
9 pm Mob City (TNT) | Two-hour miniseries premiere: The Walking Dead‘s Frank Darabont is behind this three-week, six-hour noir-style drama starring Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) as Det. Joe Teague, a key figure in the circa-1947 LAPD’s plan to cripple organized crime. The cast includes Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes), Neal McDonough (Justified), Alexa Davalos (Reunion), Ed Burns (Entourage) and Simon Pegg (Star Trek). (Watch a promo and see what Bernthal says about reuniting with his Walking Dead boss.)
9 pm The Tomorrow People (The CW) | Stephen & Co. craft a plan to get inside Jedikiah’s head — until an epic oopsie results in a worst-case scenario.
9 pm Modern Family (ABC) | While Coach Cameron gets a bit too focused on an upcoming football game, the universe thwarts Phil’s attempts to teach the kids about optimism.
9:30 pm Super Fun Night (ABC) | In tonight’s episode – which is the comedy’s original, heretofore unaired pilot – Kimmie remembers how her big promotion at the firm changed her life. Kelen Coleman (The Newsroom) and Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) guest-star.
10 pm American Horror Story: Coven (FX) | The Marie Laveau vs. Delphine rivalry comes to a head.
10 pm Nashville (ABC) | Forget about Charlie’s declaration of love – Juliette’s main concern tonight is that Layla’s stealing her spotlight.
10 pm Kirstie (TV Land) | Double-episode series premiere: Cheers alum Kirstie Alley plays Maddie Banks, a Broadway star whose life is upended when the son she gave up at birth (played by Eric Petersen, GCB) shows up, quite grown up, and wants a relationship with her. Cheers’ Rhea Perlman and Seinfeld‘s Michael Richards co-star as Maddie’s assistant and driver, respectively.
