Series creator Robert Kirkman will serve as an exec producer on the offshoot, alongside fellow EPs Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC prez Charlie Collier in a statement. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Added Kirkman: “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

Season 4 of The Walking Dead premieres Oct. 13.

It’s an absolutely fantastic idea! I’d think most of us are curious what is going on in the alternate universe of TWD in say our hometown. Or, as I’ve wondered, what would have happened to say, a Navy submarine crew. Let’s say you had a sub on deployment (not too far fetched since there are always subs deployed) when first reports of the outbreak occur.Typical Balistic missle sub is submurged for 3 months. So this sub went down about a month before initial reports. it’s crew was infected, just like everyone else & a couple get sick, die, turn, kill others who turn. etc. But, here we’ve got close quarters & armed marines who aren’t timid about killing zombies or anyone they think might kill them. So, about 1/3 or 1/2 the crew ends up dead & the remaining crew is the initial group we follow through their TWD adventure.

Another idea for AMC to consider – made for television mini-series. The reboot of Battlestar Galactica began with a mini-series that was epic. Then there was the Razor movie & the Blood & Chrome prequel. So maybe before you launch the spin-off you do a mini-series that tells more back story. Or maybe you launch with a made for tv movie. There are just so many many opportunities for this thing!

This would be so perfect!! I love that Kirkman is involved in this, so I know it will focus on the survival of the characters more than just killing zombies constantly. This show will rock!! I’ve wanted to see other climates surviving zombies, and see a group who has to migrate across America constantly. What a roadtrip/zombie heaven that would be!!
