    To quote Mary Murphy: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  2. Ladyhelix says:

    Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Excellent news – thanks!

  3. Drew says:

After watching the finale’s recap of the best dances this season I have to wonder why it would be renewed. Aside from the episode where the dances were choreographed by the all stars, this year has been painfully bad.

The show really needs a revamp. Get rid of Nigel and Mary. Get rid of the familiar choreographers (aside from Travis maybe).

    • wordsmith says:

New blood in the choreographers’ pool is good, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Travis is clearly near the top of his game, but Sonya Tayeh, Stacey Tookey and NappyTabs still consistently deliver great work. I thought that some of the newer guys like Christopher Scott and Spencer Liff really stepped it up this season as well.

      • Drew says:

I disagree. Aside from the performance that Travis gave, I’ve found most of the choreography to be stale this year. The choreographers almost seem to be a parody of themselves, using the same ideas and moves over and over again… and then Mary cries because of some useless sob story that the choreographers give to distract from the fact that their routine (which has absolutely nothing to do with the supposed story they just spoke about) is boring.

I would clean house entirely. Make the choreography part of the competition, with choreographers who are competing for a prize of their own. Who are there with as much to lose as the dancers.

And I would also hold them to their styles. It’s gotten to a point where the choreographers seem bored by their own specialties. I’m sick of weird Techno ballroom crap that looks more like hip hop than ballroom.

    • Absurdist says:

Mostly because FOX probably isn’t looking to come up with a two-hour filler for the middle of the summer. And they’ve already fired Nigel from Idol, though if they were to fire him from SYTYCD, I would be inappropriately thrilled. SCHADENFREUDE!

    • bostongreekgirl says:

I have to agree I usually watch this show with such excitement but this past season was kind of boring. I really hope that season 11 is way better. I will still watch it but if it is anything like this past season I’ll be quite disappointed.

Happy news for dance fans, like me!

  5. cjinsd says:

This makes me very, very happy!

  6. Thank goodness! I’m not entirely surprised this is happening as both ratings and reviews for this season have been very solid.

  7. David4 says:

I found this really shocking, the ratings are bad and the show is in need of new blood.

  8. DreamRose311 says:

Nigel tried to kill me! By which I mean I’ve never choked so hard as I did on my dinner when he announced this! Especially after how long it took to get word last year! Sure this hasn’t been the best season ever, but it still churned out some fantastic dancers and some top routines! I’ll take a not-as-good season of this show over a whole lot of other tv ANYDAY! And I agree with Nigel, if ‘too artistic’ is a criticism, then I wanna be criticized for the rest of my life.

    • Absurdist says:

It’s not that the show is “too artistic,” that’s just the way Nigel has chosen to interpret select criticism. His ego is really good at that, particularly after he was fired from Idol.

  9. GTS says:

Was there a doubt? Not super high ratings, but after 10 seasons, wouldn’t we know before the season ended if it was the final one?

  10. RatingsPlummeting says:

ah — here’s the ratings update. shocking renewal. this show has ZERO buzz now. surprised it got renewed.

  11. This is Fox needs more of: more dancing, more of Mary Murphy’s insanity and more of that Cat Deeley (wolf whistle).

  12. brycealexander says:

People who are surprised about the renewal are so annoying. SYTYCD positions itself as culturally relevant, which is it. Dance and SYTYCD isn’t for everyone, but what better offering could Fox conjure up for the summer? I wouldn’t see a cancellation being likely.

    • David4 says:

People who think SYTYCD is going to be renewed forever because it’s “culturally relevant” are annoying. It’s a TV show, and not a cheap one to make. Sometime soon it will be replaced by reruns and cheap soaps. It already lost the hour long result show. Fox doesn’t make it for fans, it makes it to make money.

  13. Jason Paul says:

Whew! The best summer show has been renewed. I hope they continue to add more new choreographers to spice up the show a bit. Good job Fox!

    • Absurdist says:

Well, since the Canadian version was cancelled after only three seasons, at least Mia Michaels, Melanie LaPatin, Tony Meredith, and some of the rest have greater availability for the American version.

Looking at the broader picture, more international franchises of the show have been cancelled than are currently running, which suggests that overall interest in the show is slowing a bit. Nigel and Cat are from Britain, and the British franchise only lasted two seasons, cancelled in favor of a British edition of “The Voice.” (Insult to injury, as Lythgoe’s original “Pop Idol” was cancelled after the second season, when Simon Cowell announced his plans for the original British “The X Factor.”)

Really, the longevity of SYTYCD is more attributable to it being on FOX after May sweeps. If it were pulling in the kinds of numbers that it does now in the fall (like the abortive experiment they already did) or after the holiday break (which wouldn’t happen because of Idol), the show would get the hook fairly quickly.

  14. Kari says:

I love this show, BUT seriously if they dont do a better job picking dancers next season than they did this season, I wont be watching. I didnt even tune into the finale because I didnt care about the dancers at all. The dancers were less than adequate this season, maybe 3 of them deserved to be in the top 20 at all and I dont think it was due to the choreography, I just dont think the dancers were mature enough or brought much emotion or experience to the art of dance. Almost all of them were 18, PLEASE stop trying to go younger and younger, like you did with American Idol and look for actual talent. This is from a die hard fan who LOVED this show for the past 9 seasons. Please find better more mature dancers next year.

    • Linda says:

Kari, you nailed it! I didn’t even watch this season because the dancers were so young and uninteresting. As for the choreographers getting stale….yes that’s happening too. I could always pick out a Nappytabs, Sonya or Stacey choreographed routine…even if I hadn’t seen the intro. They have their own style and while they have produced some brilliant numbers, the past couple of years have seemed to lack something. I personally, don’t like the guest judges each week and that was when they lost me as a regular viewer. I would prefer a rotating third chair of choreographers. Let them judge their fellow choreographers routines. And while I’m on the topic of judges……please get rid of Mary or tone her down a bit……she’s too over the top each week!

    • Absurdist says:

Just saying: during the Vegas week episode of season 9, Nigel made something explicitly clear when he told the contestants that some of the best dancers there were going to get cut because he wasn’t interested in picking the best of them, but rather in producing an interesting television show. (Keeping in mind that he basically threw Cyrus under the bus in that season’s finale for “not being good enough;” take that as you will).

With that, don’t hold your breath for seeing any improvement in the overall quality of the dancers anytime soon. The producers want storylines, they want fans to attach to personal favorites regardless of ability, and they want people who don’t necessarily care about dancing to watch.

Welcome to The Running Man XXXIV.
