Super Bowl Halftime Show Bruno MarsIn news that any Bruno Mars fan will treasure, it will rain (or, more likely, snow) hits from the pop star at the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show, the NFL confirmed Sunday.

This year’s Big Game will he held Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ — that is, not in a cozy domed arena. And on the East Coast. In the dead of winter. (On that date in 2013, the temperature was 32 with a low of 18.)

In fact, in announcing Mars’ booking, NFL SVP Mark Quenzel said that this halftime show will capitalize on the fact that it’s taking place in an open-air venue. So… parachutists? He arrives descending from a dirigible on a rope ladder?

Previously this decade, The Who, The Black Eyed Peas, Madonna and Beyonce have headlined the Super Bowl halftime extravaganza.

    • oh thank whatever god is willing to listen that neither of these happened. i still think the superbowl show should be a stadium rock band but this is far, far better than either of those.

  • Would have thought Springsteen or Bon Jovi would have been a better choice for the Jersey Bowl. :(

    • The NFL blew that one a couple of years ago when Springsteen was the halftime act. Bon Jovi just isn’t big enough for the gig.

  • I adore his albums, but have never seen him perform before. What types of shows does he normally put on?

      • A friend of mine took me to one of his concerts and even she- being a huge fan- was very disappointed. He’s a good vocalist and his band was very energetic, dancing and putting on a show, but the whole thing was just so uncharismatic. I can’t pinpoint what it is but it got very boring after a while…so…yeah…

  • Great news! He’s super lucky to be doing this so early in his career. He puts on great shows though, and I love his songs.

    • we can thank Janet Jackson’s gross boob for all these bad choices…

  • This choice is nowhere epic or nostalgic enough. Even if you didn’t like the acts, you’d see why Madonna, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen and The Who were chosen. Bruno Mars!?! Meh. I honestly though they would’ve gone with local product Bon Jovi.

  • Although Bon Jovi would have been a good choice due to where the SB is being played, probably didn’t get chosen due to the upheaval going on with the band right now (Sambora quitting the band).

  • I can’t recall ever being interested in one of these shows. It’s like they always have fourteen year old girls coordinating these things.

  • This dude is mad talented, and he puts on a great show. I cannot wait.

  • Sounds great! It’ll give me plenty of time to run to the store to restock supplies for the second half.

  • Do the people that choose the half time entertainer actually factor in the people that will be watching the superbowl? Or do they choose someone that will only get those who don’t bother watching football to flip to the station only for the half time show?

  • Why so negative? He’s a great singer and puts on great performances. In my opinion, he’s one of the few pop singers today who can actually sing. Personally, I love his throwback style/vibe. Give him a chance, people! :)
