Jeff Daniels: Newsroom Renewed for Season 3

Get More: Renewals

The Newswoom RenewedWith just two episodes remaining in its sophomore run, The Newsroom has allegedly been renewed for a third season.

Star Jeff Daniels — whose portrayal of anchor Will McAvoy on the HBO drama earned him a 2013 Emmy nod — announced the news late Tuesday, tweeting, “It’s official. “#Newsroom coming back for a Season 3.” (The cabler, for its part, released the following statement: “We are excited about proceeding to a Season 3 and are continuing our conversations with [creator] Aaron [Sorkin] about schedules.”)

A Newsroom pick-up seemed a foregone conclusion at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour in July, when HBO president Michael Lombardo shared, “Conversations with Aaron Sorkin are all about scheduling, as he has other commitments… I will be shocked if you would not be hearing about a renewal soon. The numbers this season are surpassing last season.”

The Newsroom‘s penultimate Season 2 episode airs this Sunday at 10/9c.

  • Thank goodness, otherwise what would all those lonely, sad, tv-writer-wanna-be critics of the show have to write about.

  • It’s a very good show with great characters. Its just a shame it is so obviously a propaganda show for the Democratic party and the characters make no attempt at unbiased reporting. Of course that accurately depicts today’s major news organizations.

    • Yeah because Fox News and CNN and MSNBC and basically every other news outlet ever are really unbiased. Every news outlet leans one way. There are no balanced news sources.

  • They’ve discovered that a season-long plot line works quite well to ground the season and the individual news events of the week. Sorkin’s political biases are readily apparent and are really only annoying when he goes waaaaay out of his way to justify their inclusion on the show.

  • I’m hoping Sorkin gets more than a nine-episode order so he doesn’t have to rush the plot. It suffered this season and the jumps were a stretch. And he still needs to write the female characters with more realism and sympathy. Unless the goal is for Sloane to be the only liked female on the show…

  • I enjoy the show, its just the dialog is so snappy, the characters answer rapid fire, before the other has a chance to finish his/her sentence. thats the only annoying part of the show.

  • Ultra liberal fantasy fest. Aaron Sorkin is horrible, and HBO is getting worse and worse with it’s liberal propaganda. I hope this show gets canceled and that Sorkin shuts the hell up

  • I would sure hope HBO brought this back. The cast and writers produce some of the most amazing television in this one hour. I watch every episode at least twice just to absorb it all again. Fantastic, amazing, and beyond talented. Just hope Season 3 warrants MORE than 9 episodes and none are cut short!

  • The best show on tv!!!. How could it not have a season 3??? I don’t have HBO but can’t wait for netflix and then purchase the DVDs (autospell wants to change it to ‘dads’ on lower case!).

  • Now we can see how this show depicts Syria, Fast and Furious, national monitoring of cell data, etc… Or it won’t and will ignore it like the left wing media. I enjoy this show but think it is definitely disingenuous to depict a newscast that will not show bias and then be clearly biased. PLEASE, in season 3, be unbiased on the foregoing issues. I would love to see Mr. McAvoy attack the president when he has clearly lied.

  • I recently discovered The Newsroom and cannot get enough of it. It certainly does a wonderful job and is right up on “what’s happening”. Thank goodness it makes sure that the truth be told. To those that disagree with about the way the issues are presented, might I suggest a little more paying attention to politics, read the newspaper and for crying out loud – “think outside the box”!
