As reported by our sister site Deadline, the cabler has given a cast-contigent green light to a series adaptation of the 1995 Terry Gilliam film, which starred Bruce Willis as a convict from a post-apocalyptic future sent back in time to acquire intel on a virus that will wreak havoc on humanity.

Brad Pitt costarred as a mental patient Willis’ character meets who may have ties to the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, a terrorist group believed responsible for the viral attack.

Filming on the pilot, which was penned by Terra Nova‘s Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, is set to begin in November, with 12 Monkeys movie producer Charles Roven on board as an EP.

  • Cool movie. I was interested to see this… then you mentioned Terra Nova and I was knocked back to “meh, we’ll see”

  • Really interesting to see who they’ll cast in the lead! Jai Courtney would be great.

Shades of Continuum in there maybe?

    • You really have to stop doing that, Amy. Also, since the original movie came out 18 years ago, don’t you think ‘Continuum’ has shades of ’12 Monkeys’?

      • Stop doing what? Bit vague there mate.
The recent success of Continuum is providing the shade in this context, not the plot.

  • 12 Monkeys would make an interesting TV show (or event series), but isn’t Continuum exactly the same show for Syfy?

  • I love TV and all, but is a show for this storyline really neccesary? I think the movie tied up the story pretty well, to be honest. Also, one wonders if this will be serving as a sequel to the movie, or taking the idea and starting from scratch.

  • Eh, just no. Twelve Monkeys was a phenomenal movie, but I can’t see how it translates to television. Nor would I want to, with this creative team and network. Barring exceptional reviews, I’ll pass on this and keep my memories of the film.

  • Yes, Terra Nova was such a well-written show. This simply cannot be anything but good!

  • No. Just no. 12 Monkeys is an awesome science fiction movie for 3 reasons: Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, and Terry Gilliam, none of which this show will have. They’re going to ruin it! Now I need to go find this movie on Netflix or whatever to watch it and mourn it.
