True Blood's Stephen Moyer Joins Carrie Underwood in NBC's Live Sound of Music Special

The Sound of Music Stephen MoyerNBC is giving True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer something to sink his teeth into during his hiatus: a starring role in the network’s live holiday production of The Sound of Music.

Moyer has been tapped to play war vet and single dad Capt. Von Trapp opposite Carrie Underwood’s Maria in the special, which is set to air on Dec. 5.

The three-hour production will be based on the original 1959 Broadway production, which starred Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel.

The 1965 film version starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and went on to win the Oscar for best picture.

Moyer, who is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, recently headlined the Hollywood Bowl’s production Chicago.

He’s a very good singer, and of course we all know she is as well. I can’t wait to see this special. It’s going to be adorable.

Stephen Moyer as the Captain I can get behind. But Carrie Underwood has no business being Maria, such terrible casting. They should’ve got someone from Broadway to do it. Laura Osnes would be perfect.

THANK YOU!! I said pretty much the same damn thing when I saw Underwood’s name. Well, I actually said “you gotta be f###ing kidding me!” The girl can sing ok, but she’s no performer, has NO stage presence. She moves like she’s afraid she’ll fall off the stage. I watched her do Paradise City on tv recently, what a wreck! Dressed like Axl Rose, trying (badly) to dance his video moves, they should have just gotten Axl himself for the song.

It’s nice to see positive comments here. On a few other sites people are *freaking out* about this. They can’t seem to get their brains around the fact that this isn’t a remake of the movie, it’s essentially live theatre. I’m excited about Stephen Moyer and hoping Carrie Underwood is up to the task!

The amazing Jackie Evancho should be cast as Liesl.
