“The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS,” executive producer Steven Moffat said in a statement. “For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.”

In addition to featuring the first interview with the new Time Lord, Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will host special guests, including past Docs, companions and celeb fans of the sci-fi series.

Smith, who will also appear on the program, makes his penultimate appearance in the 50th Anniversary special, airing Nov. 23, before regenerating into the Twelfth Doctor in the Christmas Special.

Quote: “Smith, who will also appear on the program, makes his penultimate appearance in the 50th Anniversary special, airing Nov. 23, before regenerating into the Eleventh Doctor in the Christmas Special.”

You mean the Twelfth Doctor, don’t you? Matt Smith is the Eleventh Doctor.

    • or is he the 12th? See, that’s the conundrum. For a time now it’s been said that Hurt is the real 9th Doctor, which makes Eccleson the “real” 10th, Tennant the “real” 11th, and Smith the “real” 12.

Time Lords have 13 lives, which would make the next regeneration the last one (or is it 12?)

      • Angelo says:

In the Sarah Jane spinoff, they confirmed the doctor can regenerate more than 12 times actually.

      • Badpenny says:

Originally the Doctor had 9 renegerations. Then Tom Baker, as the Doctor, said it was 12. In SJA Russell had the Doctor say 507. The basic idea here is that the Doctor lies. :)
We know that River gave the Doctor her regenerations . She had 10 left at the time, so it’s quite possible that the Doctor currently has 22 regenerations.

      • Maggie says:

The Time Lords council limited Time Lords to 12 regenerations. But it wasn’t based on biology, just rules. Now that the other Time Lords are gone, The Doctor doesn’t have to be limited by their rules.

        • Badpenny says:

There’s been a lot of theories. One of the most prevalent is that Time Lords are given a “packet” of regenerations. You can be given another packet by the Council. The Time Lords once offered The Master another cycle of regenerations that way. You can also give your “packets” to someone else – such as in the case of River and the Doctor.
It’s been done so many different ways of the last 50 years that even the writers don’t know for certain; and just like earlier writers they can simply change it as the story demands.

      • Cantered says:

Actually, by that reasoning he’s the 13th then. Since Tennant’s Doctor regenerated but poured the excess (body changing) energy into his old had, spawning Doctor Donna in the process…?

        • Forget about Doctor Donna. The outcome of that episode was the creation of the Meta Crisis Doctor. I doubt either one count as regenerations because they are separate individuals. The Hurt Doctor is not.

    • Vlada Gelman says:

      Typo fixed. Thanks!

  2. Jep Firkinszz says:

I like to masturbate to negro porn in those phone booths.

  3. david says:

    cant wait!

  4. Jep Firkinszzplop says:

I hope it’s not a woman because she’ll bleed all over and promote a homosexual agenda. I’d be okay with a negro as long as they didn’t try and promote equality and knew their place as servants to the white man.

  5. david says:

Also i think you meant to write regenerating into the twelfth Doctor

  6. Aznl Rapefirkins says:

You will never silence me. You negro homos will let me use the first amendment (written by white men) and not censor my posts. USA USA USA!!!!!

    • Cherry says:

America didn’t begin with white men you idiot, they were Native Americans. Jesus was a Jew, therefore not white.

    • Cantered says:

Should we discuss how the USA is actually stolen from red skinned tribesmen? Should we discuss how the founding fathers were racist, slave-owning, thieves? Should we discuss how Jesus wasn’t even white? Should we discuss how, the only time the US sticks it’s nose into something, somehow they get a couple more million barrels of oil? Should we discuss how more terrorism has been committed in the name of the USA (and quite often FUNDED by the USA) in the last few hundred years than any other violent act known in the history of man?

Excuse me if I don’t think you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread.

  7. Jake says:

This actually makes me quite excited. While I’m sad to see Smith leave, I’m curious to see who they got as the 12th

  8. alistaircrane says:

I’m more excited to learn when Steven Moffat is finally leaving. I don’t like his writing and I seriously can’t stand his beloved pet River Song. I used to like Alex Kingston but now I can’t even watch her as Dinah Lance on Arrow without cringing.

    • Bob says:

But what do you do if Barrowman and Kingston’s dream comes true and there’s a Captain Jack/River Song spinoff series???

    • Addy says:

When it comes to Moffat’s writing, as much as I hate the pain he puts me through (Angels in Manhattan, anyone?), I love it. Sounds a little masochist, doesn’t it? But I couldn’t imagine watching Doctor Who with out screaming “MOFFATTTT!!!!” at the end of every episode.

  9. liz says:

As much as I want it to be a woman (and I so desperately do) it won’t. It dang well better be a man of colour. If they cast *another* white guy….well I’m going to lose it.

    • liz says:

But don’t get me wrong, Smith has been by far my favourite Doctor; he was perfect!

    • If the Doctor became anything other than another white guy, it would only be for the sake of political correctness, which isn’t a good enough reason to do things.

      • M3rc Nate says:

I agree, i also think they should find the best actor/actress for the next Doctor they want, not be looking SPECIFICALLY for a black or asian or latin (etc) Doctor. If its a black actor and they say “we didnt specifically look for a black actor but he blew us away in his auditions” then perfect, good, but i dont want affirmative action. The actor/actresses ability and skill should dictate whether or not he/she gets hired, not the color of their skin.

Also, people could take offense to “another white guy”…because there’s more to them than just the light coloration of their skin…don’t lump them all together and just see color. Anyways, if your gonna stop watching Doctor Who because the 12th Doctor isn’t “a different color” like you wanted, then you were never a true Doctor Who fan anyways.

        • liz says:

Yes, they should be looking for the best actor…..but in the past they’ve looked specifically for white men. The hiring practices behind television shows deliberately exclude actors of colour. There’s NO possible way that there’s no other people who are capable of pulling off the role. By expanding the pool, never know what you might find.
And yes, some people could take offence to “another white guy”…..but those will be white men. And frankly, systemic oppression doesn’t work against them so I don’t really care about their feelings. Anyone who truly claims to not care about race should WANT a Doctor of another colour.
I didn’t say I was going to stop watching, just that I’d be incredibly disappointed. They have the chance to make bold moves, do something different, change the status quo. Its not like its a new show, trying something out. Its 50 years old and in no danger of cancellation. They have a responsibility to shake things up a bit.

          • will says:

Jeez Liz…you just want to promote an agenda don’t you? How about you just accept that the Doctor was white and will probably be white. Newer shows who can start from scratch have been putting more diversity into their characters which shows the tides are turning. But don’t take one that is very well defined and try to change it because of it being a good time for a “Bold” move. I hate the thought of the doctor being a woman also. Captain Jack would love it, but Barrowman is also pushing an agenda. The essence of the Doctor since his inception has been a man with his best side kicks being strong females. It’s not sexist, racist, or narrow minded to have that opinion either. There are times when decisions and opinions that aren’t following the politically correct or bold move are still valid and not biased by negative perceptions of a race, religion, sex, or color. But people like you will never allow for that.

          • liz says:

@will you’re right I do have an agenda. Its one where I want to see diversity in our television. Its one where I want people to not be threatened by other people who are different in any regard. Its one where I want sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and racism to not be controlling factors of what we see on tv and how we interact with each other. What a horrible agenda that is too. And Barrowman is one of us – the Diversity Mongers. lol.
It’s not sexist, racist, or narrow minded to have that opinion either. psht, yes it is. When you’re more comfortable with the white-straight-male norm than anything else, then yes, you have a problem.

        • Addy says:

Why is the ethnicity of the Doctor even an issue?? It doesn’t matter if he’s black, white, red, blue, or polka-dotted!! As anyone even considered that he might look alien this time?? What if he looks like one of those cacti from The End Of Time?? What matters is that the actor/actress knows how to act like the Doctor. That’s it. We’re done.

          • canadian ninja says:

Yeah the doctor being a different hue doesn’t bother me. But him having different junk but being all “no big deal” about it seems less believable than a dalek’s plunger. Leave it to Moffat to blame the double X regen on the energy boost River gave the Doc.

      • liz says:

sure it is. Cause sometime change wont happen otherwise.

        • Change should be organic to the story, not at the barrel of a gun. “Make Doctor Who gay/female/black/asian/latino or I’ll stop watching!” No. That’s not reason enough to justify change. Doctor Who is one of a myriad of white-skinned, male characters in fiction, just like Black Panther and Luke Cage are black-skinned, male characters or Sue Storm, Storm, and Wonder Woman are white-skinned and black-skinned female characters.

The right way to go about this is by introducing Time Lords who are not white-skinned and male, not to change the one who is.

At the end of the Tennant run, there was a female Time Lord character that many believe was the Doctor’s mother. If things happened the way you and others want it to happen, she might as well have been his dad after he regenerated into a woman, or maybe even his pet after he regenerated into a humanoid.

Maybe Susan wasn’t REALLY his granddaughter, she was his grandson after he regenerated into a man. Maybe Jennie should regenerate into a man.

          See how absurd it becomes?

    • Alan says:

yes lets exclude an entire section of people based on the colour of their skin, oh wait that sounds a little like racism doesnt it? amazing how people are so happy to promote equality by excluding a group of people.

      • canadian ninja says:

Yes this one acting role is holding back so many oppressed actors. Go write a great part for them if you care so much instead of trying to paint the freaking casting of Doctor Who as some tyranny you’re fighting against.

Geez at least the folks who just want to see a fave actress of theirs give it a go aren’t propping themselves up on a soapbox.

  10. John says:

I hope he regenerates back into David Tennant.

    • Kim says:

      I second this!!

      • Dayna says:

Third this. Motion carried, then? :)

        • Courtney says:

          Yes please! ❤

          • Lana says:

I would love to have David back as he is my favorite, but he has a new series coming soon to BBC so I don’t think my wildest dreams will happen. While I am wanting a woman president, yes I am a feminist of sorts, I do not want my Dr. to be female, I want the companion to be female and to continue to help him keep his ducks in a row.

    • Badpenny says:

David made 3 times what Matt made – Matt makes 200,000 pounds per Series in his 3 year contract. The speculation is that Matt would have stayed if the price had been right. They’re never going to go back to David and pay his price when they’re not willing to pay Matt’s.
It’ll be another unknown that the BBC can get relatively cheaply.

      • Winter says:

Well that’s the thing with the BBC and Doctor Who isn’t it. “Oh you want a raise? I think it’s time for the Doctor to regenerate anyway.”

    • Janet says:

I would vote for him everytime.

    • Bob says:

What’s done is done, and Tennant’s time is done. Just be happy that he’ll return in the 50th Anniversary special, which, IMHO, should be a 2-hour TV movie instead of a one-hour special episode.

      • Alan says:

story should only last as long as it needs to, no point in dragging a one hour story into two hours just to have a two hour episode.

    • Alan says:

ugh. get over it, his doctor overstayed his welcome by a year or two, i cheered when he finally left because he had been run into the ground.

    • Dee Dee says:

  11. Mare says:

I’m so excited to find out who Twelve is, but deeply saddened that this means Matt Smith is leaving. I love him, just love him! He is tied with Tom Baker as my all time favorite Doctor. He just brings so much life and energy to the Doctor: he can make him silly and erratic and crazy one moment, and then menacingly dangerous the next. He’s just amazing!

I wish Matt all the best in the world, but I’m seriously, seriously going to miss him as the Doctor!

  12. mccoll2u says:

I am I the uk and just scrolled through my tv planner to record it but I cant find any trace :(

    • mb says:

I’m in the UK too and just checked the BBC website. It’s on Sunday@7 pm GMT, and it says it’s live.

    • Katie T says:

That’s because they only announced it last night. It’s the 7-7.30 slot that is listed as Celebrity Mastermind as they put that in all the original TV guides so that they could keep the secret until they announced the programme

  13. Nanrobtv-381 says:

Please monitor this topic and get rid of the hate filled scumbags and their racist remarks.
–I have a question too: Do you know if and when the Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor show will be shown on BBC America?

  14. red says:

    some things to remember

Hurt plays the one who betrayed the promise of the doctor.
there are 12 for a regeneration time 13 doctors Lord therefore possible.
    matt smith is the 11th.
hurt is unknown doctor (unknown version docteur.ou more elderly of the 8th Doctor version)
Valeyard is perhaps a version of the Doctor
it will make 12-13 versions of the doctor.
the next doctor may be the most recent version of the doctor without the possibility to regenerate.

I wonder if there will be a 14th doctor.

What is funny is that Hurt plays the 10th half-human doctor who lives with Rose.
He betrayed his promise by eliminating the Daleks and becoming the destroyer of worlds

  15. red says:

A question about Clara (present on Gallifrey) Was a time lady in this incarnation?

  16. Some interesting, some insultingly offensive & also controversial comments on here so far about who 12 will be.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the BBC were plugging away behind the scenes for a female or ethnic Doctor – they are all about political correctness these days instead of historical accuracy (see Merlin, Robin Hood).
The simple fact is, the character of The Doctor is a white male, his many faces have been largely interchangeable for want of a better expression, but with each actor playing it differently.
Let’s say the Doctor regenerated into a black man (or woman) and travelled to America in the 18th century – a black person back then trying to run around saving the day, bossing white folk around – they’d be lynched (I’m just stating the real life side of it here as an example obviously)
Similarly, a female doctor travels back to the 16th century & starts “being Doctorly” – she’d be burned at the stake for witchcraft!

Now, if the showrunners (like others, I’d also rather Moffat was the one regenerating, and taking Gatiss with him) were trying for socially responsible storylines, then awesome, have at it – but the simple truth is, if they do cast a female or ethnic actor, it’s going to purely 100% be to satisfy the politically correct brigade and/or to cause controversy for the 50th anniversary.

If that happens then it’s no longer Doctor Who, it’s random person travelling in time and a vast number of fans will switch off.

also, the way they are announcing the 12th Doctor is really lame – a live audience show?
What is this, Gallifrey’s Got Talent?
    Bring back Doctor Who Confidential.

    • will says:

Perfectly said. But you are now racist according to those who say you can’t speak the truth if it doesn’t fit their agenda.

Your rationale and historical perspective are right. And even beyond that, the doctor has been white and male. Why change to black and/or female? If the dynamic of the doctor that we’ve come to know and love is a strange white male with strong female companions then why can’t we leave it at that? Why does that have to change for the sake of a certain few who want this show to take a bold stance. Doctor who is not for pushing your agenda, it’s for damn fun entertainment and quirky intellectual characters.

    • jestsaying says:

The doctor has a device that enables him to understand and be understood by people of all languages and the ability to have people think he is whatever authority figure they would respect. So why isn’t plausible that they’d also see him/her as someone else too? The Whovian universe can be written pretty much any way you want to.

    • Jen says:

It’s a sci-fi show about an 1200 year old alien who flies about the galaxy in a blue box. What is the point of having this wonderful creative and *fictional* platform if we can’t use it to promote diversity and acceptance.

Are you really wailing about “historical accuracy” when we’ve had Shakespeare haunted by witches, Queen Victoria as a werewolf, Nefertiti fighting dinosaurs on a spaceship, Winston Churchill fighting Daleks and Agatha Christie being chased around by giant wasps? Stop hiding behind this rubbish just to justify your narrow-mindedness.

  17. Ciara says:

If the Doctor did regenerate into a woman, wouldnt that be a little shocking for Clara, when she glances at the Doctor and says ‘By George! You’re a woman?!’

And the dynamic of ‘The Doctor and his TARDIS’ would make thier ‘magically everlasting companionship and affection’ angle slightly awkward if he regenerated into a woman.

At the end of the day, this show is a source of entertaiment for viewers not a bandwagon of promoting political and social issues.

  18. JJJ says:

wait, so matt smith is going to be in the christmas special and then the first episode of the next season? the article says “penultimate.” That means second to last.

  19. willowbel says:

I hope its not a female, no offence but the doctor is a TIME LORD..please dont break tradition with this fantastic show! BTW why did you have to get rid of David Tennant ahhhh so sad when he left he was the best!!
