Hostages Scoop: Grimm Matriarch Replaces Scandal's Kate Burton as First Lady

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is joining CBS’ new D.C.-set thriller Hostages as the FLOTUS, a role portrayed in the pilot by Scandal‘s Kate Burton, TVLine has learned.

Per sources, the plan is to re-shoot the two scenes in the premiere featuring Burton. Mastrantonio will also appear in the third episode (and likely beyond).

This Jerry Bruckheimer-produced thriller stars Toni Collette as Dr. Ellen Sanders, a top-shelf surgeon who in 24 hours is due to cut open the President of the United States (Gossip Girl‘s James Naughton) — but first, she and her family are taken hostage by rogue FBI agent Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott) and his savvy, sleek team of cohorts. The good doc’s horrible dilemma: Facilitate POTUS’ death during surgery, or kiss her loved ones goodbye.

  • Why??? She is so underused on Scandal I was hoping she would have a significant presence in Hostages. :-( Isn’t it strange that Kate Burton was originally on Grimm?

    • True. My guess is that the headline was designed to pull in Scandal and Grimm fans who weren’t paying enough attention (like me.) Sounds like someone said “Hey, I bet we could do something like 24 but with a Doctor…” My guess is that their pitch wasn’t “dark and edgy” enough for FOX, or they were still feeling the burn from “Mob Doctor.”
