Cinemax Sights Hunted Spin-Off Miniseries

Hunted Spin-Off CinemaxSam Hunter isn’t done running, after all.

Cinemax is developing a Hunted spin-off miniseries that continues the story of the cancelled espionage thriller’s main character, played by Melissa George.

RELATED | Cinemax Orders 1970s Drama Quarry

Hunted creator Frank Spotnitz will be involved in the new project, called Sam Hunter, which finds private spy Sam trying to figure out why there’s a price on her head and what her current situation has to do with her mother’s murder. (Let’s not forget she’s also trying to keep her young daughter safe from whomever wishes them harm.)

Hunted‘s solo season was commissioned by the UK’s BBC One before Cinemax came on as the U.S. producer and distributor;  per our sister site Deadline, the British network’s decision not to renew the series for a second season made it impossible for the drama to continue in its original form.

So the American cabler kept the parts it liked — namely, its creator, star and main character — and is making something new.

Spotnitz is now writing the project, which will eventually be a four-hour miniseries.

  1. I love Hunted an the story behind it so I’m glad they are going to continue on with the show even if they have to change the name an everything as long as it continues on I’m happy its a great action show an its wonderful to see a female as a strong lead

    • rebecca says:

I love Hunted. I do hope it has more than 4 episodes. It shouldn’t offend people about the sex scenes. It didn’t really have a lot if them compared to a lot if shows. I liked everything about the show.

      • Anonie Mous says:

Its so nice you think that the reduced number of sex scenes compared to other shows means people should not be offended by the ones that ARE in the show…what, honestly, does one have to do with the other? By logical conclusion, honey, nothing. If one doesn’t care to voyeuristically watch others screwing, a vertical move from a peeping tom outside YOUR window while you have fun in bed, then the amount of exposure has no bearing on the discomfort level of who don’t care to be peeping toms. Yeah, it IS the same thing, one is legal and one is not. How DOES that work? I just love the contradictions inherent in today’s thinking. Talk about irrational. Love the products of the past three gens of public ed. What a bloody waste. You get your gold star, for sure.

        • gb1985 says:

who cares if tv shows have sex scenes in? last time i checked these sorts of tv shows are supposed to be portrayals of real life, people have sex in real life, hence it would be ridiculous to believe that it’s not going to happen. there is a vast difference between adding in sex scenes that add to the storyline (ie. the scene with Zoe and Andrew where she attempts to use sex to dissuade a conversation eluding to the problems in their relationship) and adding in overly gratuitous sex scenes that add nothing other than a little fan service and don’t fit into the storyline in anyway. either way, if you don’t like watching sex scenes in a show, turn it off, simple, we don’t need to be subjected to your opinion that you think is fact, and quite frankly i think you need to get some perspective on real life, but hey, that’s just MY opinion

        • Jason Gumaer says:

If you do not like it, don’t watch. If this type of show bothers you, why are you trolling it’s website(s)?

        • didi123 says:

I must say that I thought the sexual content in Hunted was over the top. I think Melissa George is a good actress and I have liked many of her films, but I don’t need to see SO much of her in these types of situations — that is NOT what I am watching the show for. I wanted a smart, well-acted, action thriller. The sexual content adds nothing for me and frankly is shoddily done in this show. It does make the viewer feel like a peeping Tom and I wanted to turn it off at the start of the pilot. And, this was a show that I had been eagerly anticipating. If someone wants to view porn, do so. But can we please keep the porn filler out of what could otherwise be good programming?

          • tonystates says:

Did James Bond’s exploits on film as well as those sexual innuendos cause you difficulty in making the books and films the highest sought after in the civilized world?

    • karen says:

so happy that hunted is back on, love love love

    • WH Auden says:

I was so disappointed to hear that they were not going to renew for season 2. This is a great show. I was scratching my head asking myself how in the world they could justify cancelling such a great show. Obviously…..ratings. But after reflecting, it occurred to me audiences were having trouble following the plot? What does that say? That audiences that have to focus for longer than a nano second have to stick to cartoons? Easy to conclude, you really do have to pay attention and really it tells you that the people who like this show, me being one, appreciate a show that has more layers and levels than the mindless offerings of most tv. Glad to hear that they have found a way to keep it going and deliver to fringe audiences that appreciate the quality of a show like Hunted. It’s rare but sometimes TV Shows catch on after being picked up by other stations. The Killing is a good example. They were going to can it and I’m sure most viewers would agree, that it is nothing less than a classic. Luther is another example and it is because Indris Elba delivers and so does Melissa George. After watching George In Treatment, you can tell this woman has real talent. I couldn’t be happier that she’s going to continue this story regardless of the format. I’d be happy to sit in and listen to her recite the contents of the phone book. You Go Girl!!!

    • Esther says:

Thank you for bringing Hunted back! I miss Sam Hunter and company.

  2. bella says:

Can someone in the know elaborate as to “why” it couldn’t continue in its original form without the BBC? Hope the continuation is compelling viewing.

  3. Michael says:

    More than 4 hours please

  4. BrianR says:

More than four hours and more naked Sam.

  5. Suzanne says:

Excellent news. Loved Hunted and look forward to seeing more of Melissa George.

  6. M3rc Nate says:

Is this show actually good? It seemed like something up my alley, i love spy stuff and gun stuff and shows like Strike Back, Homeland, Covert Affairs, etc. But when i watched the first 2 episodes it just didn’t seem that good. Its been so long since i watched them that i dont remember specifics, but Matt (or anyone) would you really say its a good tv show? The plot was above par?

    • Shaun says:

it was decent I guess, but I didn’t stick with it.

    • Dave says:

No its isnt very good. Sorry to offend the fans of the show but most people didnt like it. Hence why the BBC dropped it.

      • ultimate troll says:

You’re not sorry and you’re a dick. Also, most people didn’t watch it and had no opinion. So you’re a wrong dick too.

        • Dave says:

LoL Trollllllllllllllllllllllllllllieeeeeeeeeeee quick someone get me the troll bat.

        • Anonie Mous says:

And you ARE the ultimate troll. You have the right to be a jack a** by really being nasty over some one’s opinion? You don’t get to insult people just because the disagree with you. Bet you wouldn’t be this way face to face, cowardly troll, you’d probably spend too much time in the hospital for being verbally abusive.

    • Anonie Mous says:

Yes, I expected a lot more. Covert Affairs is my favorite, and I loved the original Nikita. Those series develop the characters, make you care about them. It’s hard after the bar has been raised so high. Reading the comments here, by guys mostly, they are so immature, all they want is porno in a spy version and naked Sam. What an indictment of this show. It really doesn’t stack up, no pun intended.

  7. derek117 says:

I had read Cinemax was going to continue this show–but not seeing anything recent made me think they’d changed their minds. Anyway, glad to hear we’ll be seeing more of the delightful Melissa George–who is very under-rated in part because of her sexiness, as well as her tendency to give attitude during interviews. Also I agree with others that “Hunted” season 2 needs more than four episodes (unless each ep is 2 hrs long) AND definitely more naked Melissa.

  8. Linnie says:

More than 4 hours, please! Fantastic show!

  9. GARY says:

  10. DavidSask says:

Why bother with only four parts?

    • Evan says:

Because Luther only gets now 4 episodes at a time and it’s awesome.

But this is Cinemax so we definitely need an increase in nudity and sex. Going from Strike Back and Banshee to this series which showed virtually nothing is no doubt one of things that didn’t help it the first time. Fantastic story and acting, yes but again its on Cinemax. There are rules to follow! ;-)

  11. TLG says:

Loved this show. So glad Cinemax is sticking with it….needs to be more than 4 hours though. Sam is kick ass.

  12. Stinky Feet Lover says:

I love her, she has some awesome BJ lips!!

  13. G says:

I liked the show okay, but not as good as Banshee or Strikeback. I’m glad they kept Melissa George as she was the one good thing on the show. I will check it out when it returns.

  14. Marsha hale says:

Love it. Found it on, on demand watched all 8 in an 8 hour marathon! Please write more!

  15. Stuart says:

Wow! She’s coming back? Can’t wait for the return of one of TV’s most compelling 2012 characters. Many of us here in the UK fail to understand the BBC – they waste tens of millions of £’s on rubbish, yet a good show with a challenging premise gets dropped. The Blue Ray set of Hunted is extra stylish to watch!

  16. pisher says:

It was a horrible show, and a total flop. Cinemax obviously figured out early on they had a loser here, which is why it’s downgraded to a miniseries. It’ll air, it’ll flop again, and it’ll never be seen again.

    • Bao Hu says:

Douchebag. You are either a moron or a hater or both. Hunted was an extremely well done series. Melissa George is far beyond a sexy trollop. You probably don’t care for Homeland either. Keep your ri-dick-u-lous comments to yourself.

      • Anonie Mous says:

Bao Hu, KEEP YOUR INSULTS TO YOURSELF, YOU ARE WAY BEYOND RUDE, jack. Just because some one has an opinion that differs from yours, gives YOU NO RIGHT to be insulting AND cast aspirations on some one’s character. Nothing Pisher said warrants your over the top vulgar nastiness,,call names or label. You show a remarkable lack of good character by your reply, but an amazing amount of bad character. By the way, JUST BECAUSE YOU SAY IT, does NOT make this person a hater. WE are a land of FREE speech allows us to have an opinion that we may state in public and that DOES NOT entitle you be rude and insulting. Bloody well grow up and act like an adult with some common sense or at least a pretense to intelligence. Another gold star poster. Every one gets one, even if they aren’t up to par. Yeah, our ed sys at its finest for the past 3 gens.

        • death to zionism says:

haha lool not really the land of free speech, you cant say anything with out being arrested or being called an extremeist

        • John says:

Over the top much….I bet you wouldn’t speak like this to someone’s face!!
          Very rude and bitchie!

  17. DJ says:

Love the Series. At times a bit confusing but see it is to keep you wondering what will happen next! Bring 8t back to regular programming. I do not get Cinemax!

  18. Snowbird says:

Let’s see how many Americans liked this show. BBC has had some wonderful shows over the last several years that Americans have thoroughly enjoyed. And this show has been exceptionally good. Now that it’s been picked up by Cinemax, perhaps more people than they ever dreamed of will watch, especially in America. Just a comment about the sex thing, if Cinemax adds more sex scenes to it, than they will lose a very huge audience as most people would rather see a good solid action-packed story that a majority audience can watch without being offended. Perhaps a “porn” version could be done at a later time for the sex addicts who can’t get enough, except on television. Majority rules.

    • i’m here, in part, to say: many of us in the USA **loved** the “Hunted” show! we get our mitts on any good tv series we learn of, in any way we can, just like people from all around the globe. & after last year’s news re: the season 2 plan’s demise i’m thrilled to read that Sam Hunter will be back! & believe me, i’m not alone in that! awesome update! thank you!..& is the admin or writer of this post a BSG fan? saw the word & i frakkin’ hope so, lol!…So Say We All! :o)

  19. What a shame that it was cancelled. Glad to hear that the character played by the wonderful Melissa Geoge will be returning,

  20. This show should have died & the producers etc should all have hung their heads in shame for how they treated some of the cast, like adding in additional sex scenes requiring nudity AFTER all the deals were struck & actors signed up, then threatening them with being fired & sued if they didn’t do the scenes.
    Absolutely disgraceful behaviour.

    • Anonie Mous says:

Then since the contract was violated it was rendered null and void and the actors didn’t have to do it. They chose to. It’s on them.

  21. Amy says:

    I love the show!

  22. Nikanor Kaersgaars says:

BBC’s loss , brilliant series, just hope they keep the good bits & dont make it into just another US soulless action .

  23. lena priamo says:

At first I wasn’t too interested in watching but I gave it a few episodes and couldn’t wait for the show to start each week. Really interesting storyline unlike some other series on other cable networks. Melissa was excellent in her role. So glad to see a spinoff but only 4 episodes??? Melissa will be in “The Good Wife” so that is great.

  24. Lawgeek says:

A series that started slowly, but built into a gripping thriller. Very British in style, afraid that will be lost in the spin-off. The plots developed slowly and required one actually think. Many in US prefer their plots and themes spoon fed (not me). I think it really helped to watch the series in four sittings over a one week span.

  25. Dime says:

Omg I can’t wait…Sam is the best!!! After checking on demand since episode 8 ended season 1 to reading its coming backs Effin Great!!! Next best series after Kidnapped but this 4 hr thing is straight bull; last season wasn’t even long enuff

  26. Apmbabiestoo says:

I love this show, totally rockin, can’t wait for more just need to know when. :)

  27. Josie says:

Loved the series was left waiting for more. Thought it was an abrupt end. Can’t wait to see more and more than 1 x 4 part series.

  28. Melissa fan says:

Love Melissa George. Have since she was in Alias. Hunted was good too, although she carried the show so good to see her back on her own. And yes, she is super sexy but want to see her in good show, and she does not have to be naked in it.

  29. Lulu says:

My husband and I are THRILLED that Hunted will be back – Melissa G. was terrific and each show kept us on the edge of our seats!
Yippee, can’t wait to see what comes next.

  30. Bob says:

Love this show! It has an original plot line, good characters. I even added to my cable t.v. lineup just to watch this show! I truly hope they do more than just 4 hours.

  31. Westies says:

Recently came across this series. Up to episode 4 and like it so far. Glad to see it renemed at least for a mini series so its worth to watch the remaining 4 episodes. I’m sure the new show will be high quality. it’s done by Cinemax, but they are owned by HBO.

  32. Sandy Straface says:

I really enjoyed the series and would like to see more than four episodes! BTW, Melissa George can be seen on “The Good Wife”

  33. Lisa says:

Love Hunted!!!! Want more looking forward to it!!!

  34. Helen says:

We loved watching Melissa George in hunted. So happy it will return. Please give us more than 4 hours.

  35. prentiss says:

Why would a show like Hunted be cancelled and trash like Banshee be renewed?

  36. Baron says:

The bigger question is ‘when is the series going to start’?

  37. Brandon says:

Just finished watching on Cinemax I still on the edge of my seat! Can’t wait till Sam returns!

  38. mike hogan sr says:

this series was awesome i like melissa shes gorgeous and a great actress cant wait to see the new show been waiting for somthing to take place the brits really droped the ball on this one hu .

  39. Julia says:

I’m glad to hear this. The story was not complete. It would be great if Adam Rayner reprises his role and the fact that her daughter is alive is a major plot to be explored.

  40. Roxanne says:

I am so disapointed that Hunted will not be continued. That show was AWESOME! I was completely hooked from the first episode.

  41. Jay says:

This show was AWESOME!! So disappointed it was cancelled –the plot kept you on edge and its not often you find a show with so many “unexpected” twists and turns…

  42. John says:

One of the best series I have seen in years. I’m watching Homeland and Masters of Sex and find them to be very good but Hunted is even better. Sure, there are slow bits but on balance it is a well written plot and well acted.

  43. Gilbert says:

Looking forward to the new series, I hope they reconsider and produce more than 4 hours of programming. I personally loved all of the characters and thought that the syory line was great.

  44. Dudley says:

I enjoyed watching “Hunted” and was looking forward to a second series. Sure it had its faults and it is perhaps because it was so good in concept that so many viewers condemned it for those few mistakes rather than giving it the chance it deserved to tell a pretty good story.

I for one will be looking out for the miniseries with high expectations and no small degree of eager anticipation!

Shame on you, BBC, for bowing to ratings figures. The majority may be the majority but that doesn’t make them right!

  45. Lisa says:

Most boring storyline ever. Spare us all from more lifeless and unconvincing plotlines and spend $$ on giving more episodes to better series, like Banshee.

    • tonystates says:

Don’t watch it, but don’t knock it just to prove you’re one of the highbrows that watch Banshee.

  46. tonystates says:

This is an excellent series and should prove to be politically motivating. Bring her back and have her meet Nikita.

  47. Awesome… Fantastic story and a great fun show,, can’t wait to find out more and see the action

  48. dcg4us says:

Yes. Love The show. Would have watched forever. Will watch whatever they come up with.

  49. Debbie J says:

Hurry up and bring on the new series!
