What to Watch Wednesday: Americans Finale, Supernatural Trial, Family Tools Time and More

The AmericansOn TV this first Wednesday of May sweeps: The Americans prepares to defect for the summer, Family Tools gets its premiere under its belt, Chicago Fire rekindles an old flame and Supernatural tees up its third trial. As a supplement to TVLine’s original features (linked within), here are 10 programs to keep on your radar.

PREVIEW | Arrow‘s John Barrowman on Malcolm Merlyn Sharing His Dark Secret and His Epic, Lex Luthor-Like Agenda

8 pm The Middle (ABC) | Though he’s perfectly healthy, Frankie’s dad Tag reads Tuesdays With Morrie and decides that Mike needs to listen to his long-winded life stories on a weekly basis. Bailey Buntain (Bunheads) returns as Sue’s freshman mentee, Jenna.

8:30 pm Family Tools (ABC) | Series premiere: In this adaptation of the BBC’s White Van Man, when a hardworking handyman (played by The Closer‘s JK Simmons) has a heart attack, he reluctantly hands his business over to his screw-up son Jack (Perfect Couples‘ Kyle Bornheimer, of course). Leah Remini (King of Queens) also stars, as Jack’s aunt Terry.

9 pm Criminal Minds (CBS) | Matthew Gray Gubler directed tonight’s episode, which finds the BAU investigating the ritualistic deaths of two men. Meanwhile, Reid continues to grieve Maeve’s death (but happier days ahead?).

9 pm Law & Order: SVU (NBC) | A military veteran suffering from PTSD (guest star Eion Bailey, Once Upon a Time) is the prime suspect after a teen is brutally assaulted at a concert. Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) returns as sleazy lawyer Ben Cohen, in what EP Warren Leight calls “a very disturbing episode.” (If you haven’t heard – renewed!)

9 pm Supernatural (The CW) | A disturbing message from Kevin prompts the Winchesters to try to uncover the third trial. They wind up at a Colorado casino, where a strange recluse (Curtis Armstrong, Revenge of the Nerds) may be able to fill in the holes in Kevin’s research. Elsewhere, Castiel tries to elude Naomi and the angels hunting him.

9 pm Modern Family (ABC) | Phil has another run in with nemesis Gil Thorpe (Rob Riggle, NTSF: SD: SUV::) during career day at Luke and Manny’s school; Cam and Mitchel make a costly mistake while playing Tooth Fairy.

PREVIEW | CSI Scoop — What Does a “Surprise Visitor From Italy” Mean for Hodges and Elisabetta?

10 pm The Americans (FX) | Season finale: Philip and Elizabeth are ordered to go through with a meeting that might be a set-up, while Stan gets so close to finding out the truth about his neighbors, he can almost taste the borscht. (Yep, renewed.)

10 pm Nashville (ABC) | In the first of the season’s final four episodes, Liam invites Rayna to run away with him to finish her album. We think Deacon’s reaction is interesting; Stacy’s take on the situation is a little less… detached. (Check out preview photos and watch two sneak peeks!)

10 pm Chicago Fire (NBC) | Casey falls back into old patterns in his personal life, and Severide’s career is threatened. Meanwhile, Det. Voight returns to collect on the favor that Dawson owes him.

10 pm Psych (USA Network) | After the mayor dies in what looks like a surfing accident, Shawn’s investigation turns into his own campaign for the vacant office.

  • The Americans is a perfect example of letting a show find its footing and not throwing in the towel too hastily. The show started off slow and I was about to give it up til Keri Russell beat the crap out of Margo Martindale. I’ve been hooked ever since and I can’t believe tonight will be the last we see of this gem of a show til January.
