Revenge Showrunner to Leave as Result of 'Difficult Mutual Decision' With ABC

Mike Kelley Leaving RevengeRevenge is losing one of its ringleaders.

Creator Mike Kelley is stepping down as the ABC drama’s showrunner, our sister site Deadline reports.

As part of what he describes as “a difficult mutual decision between myself and ABC studios,” Kelley will hand over the reins next season — likely to current executive producer Sunil Nayar — while possibly staying on as a consultant.

UPDATE: Per our sister site Deadline, Kelley from Day 1 and ever since has lobbied ABC for shorter, 13-episode seasons. The network’s reluctance to adopt that cable-style model led to tensions that reportedly ultimately fueled this parting of ways.

“Helming this series has been the ride of a lifetime,” Kelley tells the site, “and my producing partner, Melissa Loy, and I will look back on our Revenge time with deep gratitude and respect for Emily [VanCamp] and Madeleine [Stowe] and the rest of the incredible cast, our heroic crew, the dedicated and imaginative producing and writing team, and the tireless post-production department.”

He went on to thank “[ABC President] Paul Lee, his marketing team, and the creative executives at ABC and ABC studios for their profound support throughout this journey.”

In the meantime, Kelly is “excited about finishing post-production on the Season 2 finale, which I hope will stand among the best episodes of the series thus far.”

While Revenge has yet to be renewed for Season 3, it is “a sure thing” on TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard.

Revenge fans, are you shocked by the news of Kelly’s exit?

I absolutely love Revenge and am very sad to see Mike Kelley go. This show was his vision and his vision only. Yes, anybody can take over, but it will not be the same. When Mike created the show he also knew how it would end. And it’s sad that it won’t end the way he wants it to. I don’t want the show to ever end, but it will. And he won’t be a part of it:(

Like I previously stated, I absolutely love Revenge. Bc I love the show so much I like having long seasons. I look forward to it being on every week for a long period of time. However, I do agree with Mike. It just makes more sense to have 13ep seasons. With 13 episodes we get really well written, action packed drama. Instead of useless information they had to put in there just to fill up some space. I’ve never disliked an ep of Revenge until this Season. Back at the end of Feb beginning of March they had 2 very boring episodes in a row. I was very disappointed. As were many other fans, but I can deal with it, I still love the show. Another thing is, the breaks. When they run a show from Sept. thru May they take a butt-load of breaks. Which causes the ratings to take a dip, not to mention the fans that it pis$es off. I know I absolutely hate it. The show’s on 1 wk then off for 3 then back for 2 weeks and off a month. It’s so frustrating. I don’t have the best memory so I tend to forget what happened on the last episode, when they take all them breaks. Which in turn causes fans to lose interest:( If they had a 13ep season, they could run them all in a row, no breaks. Like Body of Proof is doing this season, as well as, The Following.
*****I know the breaks have nothing to do with the show, it has everything to do with the network.

My final thoughts are: I’m sad Mike is leaving, but I will continue to watch for as long as it’s on the air:)

Still watching but season two is a different show than season one. I’d rather have 13 great episodes than 22-24 medicore ones even if I’m not happy about it. Right now the inconsistent breaks on all of ABC’s drama’s are really hurting them.

This is when shows tend to unravel and fall through the cracks! Love this show so I hope that’s not the case. Would love for it to survive many seasons to come.

P.s. this shocking death better be good. My guess, DANIEL. How obvious can it be? They have made him dispensable.

“difficult mutual decision”? Really? Isn’t this the same crap they said about Gilmore girls, Smash and The Walking Dead? Everytime network execs try interfering with the production of the TV shows they produce, how is it that these idiot execs are always getting rid of their showrunners and then wondering why, months later, when the ratings for those shows are dropping? It’s because they can write them off on their taxes.

Networks are always doing this so they can pad their tax write-offs and it is pathetic.

I think shorter seasons would definitely work wonders for this show. it kinda drags sometimes.

I’m shocked, but willing to see what the new person brings.

I hope they stick to the basic storyline of the initiative and disaster relief–you can really morph that into so many twists and scenarios (the intiative and ______) that the show can run for many seasons to come.

Didn’t think I’d like it (i watch on Netflix) and now I give it 5 stars and can’t wait for Season 3 (will be a long time for me).

Thank you, Revenge people! Hope you get some Emmy awards.
