American Idol: What Should the Top 4 Sing for One-Hit Wonders/Contestant's Choice?

American-Idol-Season-12-Top-4Fox hasn’t officially confirmed it, but sources close to American Idol are buzzing that Season 12 Top 4 week will be a two-theme kind of party: One-Hit Wonders and Contestant’s Choice.

The former — which topped an AT&T “fan’s choice” vote — has the potential to be fantastic, as long as producers don’t try to force the contestants toward novelty hits or tired old songs that have been covered on Idol a million times before (and simply happen to qualify under the one-hit wonder header).

The latter theme is a cause for celebration because it’ll allow us to see the kinds of artists that Candice Glover, Kree Harrison, Angie Miller and Amber Holcomb want to be in a post-Idol world.

Below are my dream set-list selections. Bear in mind I defined “One-Hot Wonder” as those artists who’ve only cracked the Billboard Top 40 on one occasion in their careers:

ONE-HIT WONDERS
Candice Glover: Groove Theory’s “Tell Me” or The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” or Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” or Chanté Moore’s “Chanté’s Candice Got a Man” or Hot’s “Angel in Your Arms” or Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain” (yep, she did it before Tina Turner)

Kree Harrison: Semisonic’s “Closing Time” or Concrete Blonde’s “Joey” or Dionne Farris’ “I Know” or Everlast’s “What It’s Like” or Blind Melon’s “No Rain” or Michael Penn’s “No Myth

Amber Holcomb: Lucy Pearl’s “Dance Tonight” or M. People’s “Movin’ on Up” or the Mary Jane Girls’ “In My House” or Sonique’s “It Feels So Good” or Breakfast Club’s “Right on Track” or Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band’s “Whispering/Cherchez La Femme/Se Si Bon

Angie Miller: New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give” or Donna Lewis’ “I Love You Always Forever” or When in Rome’s “The Promise” or Vivian Green’s “Emotional Rollercoaster” or Everything But the Girl’s “Missing

Contestant’s Choice
Candice Glover: Dolly Parton’s “What a Heartache” (seriously, this could be her own personal “I Will Always Love You”) or Jill Scott’s “Gettin’ in the Way

Kree Harrison: First Aid Kit’s “Emmylou” or Hank Williams’ “Cold Cold Heart

Angie Miller: Blake Lewis’ “Heartbreak on Vinyl” or Aimee Mann’s “Wise Up

Amber Holcomb: Deborah Cox’s “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here (Hex Hector Mix)” or Adam Lambert’s “Sleepwalker

“Closing Time” for Kree? No. Just no. “Closing Time” is one of the most annoying songs in recent memory.

    • Devon says:

No kidding! On a side note: it makes me really sad that Closing Time is the most well known Semisonic song. I really loved them but that song is just so … meh.

    • Leah Hoffman says:

I hate to say this because I’m such a HUGE Slezak fan, but his song choices are always so off to me.

      • MC says:

The most ridiculous Slezak song choice this season was recommended to Janelle and it was, “She Works Hard For The Money.” I had to laugh at that one when I read it several weeks ago.

    • Real Deal says:

agree that Closing Time fits kree…

    • Kenneth Chow says:

i find Closing Time a weird choice for Kree…not because she can’t do it well…but, can you really see Kree singing about an alcoholic drunk…i certainly can’t

      • Lunakit says:

I read an interview where they said that song was about leaving your mother’s womb (“This room won’t be open till your brothers or your sisters come…”)
…I guess I can see how being connected to a placenta is the ultimate experience of “belly up to the bar” :-)

    • BummedOut says:

Kree will have her moment if she sings either Broken Wing or Will Would You Be by Martina McBride for her contestants choice.

    • Pamela Jones says:

I think Amber could slay Fever as contestants choice. she needs to freewheel Jazz but she likes fast and ballads…

  2. bridget says:

    “Emmylou” for Kree is BRILLIANT.

    • Fernando says:

      one-hit wonders:

Kree — “Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues” by Danny O’Keefe; “For What It’s Worth,” by Buffalo Springfield
Angie — “Please Come to Boston” by Dave Loggins/ Reba (at the piano)
Amber — “Midnight at the Oasis,” Maria Muldaur
Candice — “Don’t Go to Strangers,” Etta Jones; “Play That Funky Music,” Wild Cherry

      contestant’s choice:

Kree: “You Can Sleep While I Drive,” Melissa Etheridge/Trisha Yearwood; “Stand by Your Man, ” Tammy Wynette; “Till I Can Gain Control Again,” Emmylou Harris
Angie — “If I Knew, ” by Bruno Mars; “On a Bus to St. Cloud,” Gretchen Peters/Trisha Yearwood; “Honky Cat,” Elton John (all at the piano)
Amber — “When I Was Your Man,” by Bruno Mars if she can work around the gender issue; “If I Were a Boy,” Beyonce.
Candice — “This Bitter Earth,” by Dinah Washington; “Lady Marmelade,” Patty LaBelle; “Fortunate Son, ” Creedence

hard to do this week — especially the one-hit songs.

  3. noa says:

Slezak, i thought it was weird you didn’t suggest “Kiss The Rain” for anyone because you usually don’t miss an opportunity, but it turns out Billie Myers had another top 40 hit!!!

    • Pen says:

      One Hit Wonders
Candice – I Wonder Why – Curtis Stigers
Amber – Would I lie to you? – Charles and Eddie
      Kree – Stay – Shakepeare’s Sister
      Angie – Nothing Compares – Sinead O’Connor

      Singer’s Choice
Candice – I am Changing – Dreamgirl’s Score or Grenade – Bruno Mars
Amber – Firework – Katy Perry
Kree – Rolling in the Deep – Adele
Angie – Empire State of Mind – Alicia Keyes

      • not says:

I don’t think Sinead counts as a one-hit wonder. Though I admit I didn’t go research it, I can’t imagine she never had another song crack the top 40.

I like the idea of Kree doing Adele. Adele seems an obvious choice for this top 4 but they seem to be avoiding her (other than Candace on Adele’s version of Love Song). That’s probably because a few seasons her songs were really overdone, but I think the time has come to reopen that door and I’d love to hear what Candace or Kree could do with this (or One and Only).

    • scooby says:

Your brain and my brain are apparently besties. :) “Kiss the Rain” is a great one to pick. I know Hanson had more than one hit, so this wouldn’t work here, but “I Will Come to You” should be a contestant’s choice song. Siobhan Magnus covered it–her rough version’s on Youtube where she’s working it out on the piano. Angie could do that one at the piano as well. Trying to decide if “Kiss the Rain” would be nice for Kree to put a country spin on. I’m afraid if Amber tried it, she’d leave the beginning in the lower part of her register which could backfire because it really needs to come up a notch. Kree would arrange it properly.

  4. noa says:

i hope Kree does another Susan Tedeschi song. maybe Hurts So Bad. i saw a video of her covering it and it sounded amazing. or maybe something by Tedeschi Trucks Band. but Hurts So Bad will have a lot of impact if she puts everything into it.

as for one-hit wonders… Missing for Angie would be my choice too. but i’m having a hard time thinking of songs for this theme. i always worry that i think an artist only had one hit and then it turns out i’m just not familiar with the rest. i’ll think about it some more.

    • scorpiosue1102 says:

Susan Tedeschi’s “In the Garden” is soooo good. I would love to hear her do that one.

    • judy says:

I would say Midnight in Harlem from Tedeschi Trucks for Kree… she would killed it

    • candicegloverfan says:

i agree about the susan tedeschi song idea – last kree performance i loved was ‘evidence’ – and i’d also love to hear kree do some old-school linda ronstadt!

  5. Sara says:

I would love to hear “What It’s Like” by Everlast, or “I Love You Always Forever” by Donna Lewis! What about Lisa Loeb, is she a one-hit wonder? I think Angie could do something really beautiful with “You Say”.

    • noa says:

You Say!! i was thinking about that song and trying to remember the name and the artist… thanks! great suggestion.

      • Steve F. says:

If we’re talking Lisa Loeb, the song’s called “Stay”… and even though she’s not a one hit wonder (“I Do” was her other hit), I can see Angie doing this.

  6. NQMGirl47 says:

I would love to see Angie do A-ha’s “Take on me” and Id love to see Kree do Duncan Sheik “Barely Breathing”.

    • NQMGirl47 says:

Oh and Id love to see Candice do Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn

    • Keith says:

A-ha had two hits-The sun always shines on TV also made the top 40-it made it to #20

      • Vetle says:

It really depends how you define one-hit wonder. They were huge in Norway and pretty popular in Europe (check chart positions on their last album) till the day they retired from the band.

      • HitTheGroundRunning says:

Not all that many one-hit wonders were truly absolutely 1 and only 1 hit. Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Phil Collins, U2, etc. were not one hit wonders. A-ha and so many of the other 80s new wave/pop artists might be considered as such though as they were mostly hugely famous for one or two songs, perhaps with a few other lesser known songs, whatever the exact number they didn’t stick around for a bunch of years making super known songs year after year.

    • Jasmine says:

If Angela did her own piano twist on that song, but sing the chorus exactly the way it was originally sung, that would be so beautiful. Nice choice! I might listen to that song some more now. A-ha’s….huh…cool

    • Harvey says:

I was thinking Candice could do Take On Me, and really blow everyone away with those high notes.

      Other One-Hit Wonders:
Angela – Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Amber – She Blinded Me With Science
      Kree – No Rain

Contestant’s choice (all from the past year)
Candice – Part of Me, by Katy Perry
Kree – Home, by Edward Sharpe
Angela – Mirrors, by Justin Timberlake
Amber – How Come You Don’t Want Me Now, by Tegan and Sara

  7. rebekacoupe says:

    Feel like a women-shania twain

  8. Vetle says:

I listened to Pink’s “The Great Escape” while I was walking today. I just imagined Angie tearing that song apart. In a good way.

I would love to see if someone could do a Norwegian band on American Idol again (P2 did Madcon last year, which was pretty cool), so I would love to see Take On Me. And Candice should totally do “Crazy”. I loooove that song.

This could be a great week. Especially with THIS top 4.

    • Jasmine says:

one word for this song…….BRILLIANCE! You’re not lying. Angela would definitely tear this song up. Wooh! The thought of her singing it, I can just picture it….goosies!

  9. McJagger says:

As a EBTG fan, I object to them being on this list!!! The certainly weren’t chart toppers but they about 10 terrific albums in the 80/90s. Such beautiful songs, I would love an EBTG theme night…

  10. Louie says:

I’m surprised Sade’s “Pearls” didn’t show up on that list somewhere… it shows up every year on Michael’s song choices

  11. A.R. Audsley says:

Read your review on the Idol performances this week, and afterwards wondered if the gooey stuff coming out of the current array of judges are maybe technically perfect. In other words, your biases are showing, and maybe you might consider actually listening to the music, and quality of performers rather than blurting out a bunch of nonsense.

  12. McJagger says:

How about Papa Peaches guesting on results night to perform Presidents of the USA “Peaches” :D

  13. Steve F. says:

Angie – I can see some Michelle Branch (“All You Wanted”) or some Sophie B. Hawkins (“Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover”).

    • Jasmine says:

Love that Michelle Branch song. Love it to death. My favorite song of Michelle’s. However, being honest, I don’t think that song would be a strong enough performance for Angela. The melody of the song is so restricting in such a way that any variation of the sort would not sound right at all and you know how Angela loves to change it up. Beautiful, beautiful song but not the right song for Angela Miller.

  14. soundscene says:

I guarantee at least one, if not more, will sing a song from a band or artist that is not technically a one-hit wonder (more like the band or artist simply has one really stand-out hit, and the others charted so long ago we kind of all forgot they charted). I think one way to deem an artist a one-hit wonder is to allow for follow-up charting songs within the 6 months after the big hit, but none thereafter.

Otherwise I have no opinion since I’m not really excited about any of these contestants (or any that got eliminated either; still find this to be the dullest season yet).

    • Joy says:

Yeah, it seems like there’s often willingness to be flexible about a theme definition if someone’s got a killer song choice that doesn’t quite fit (e.g., “classic rock” becomes just “rock” so Angie can do the Evanescence song). A lot of artists have actually had multiple charting songs, but are still overwhelmingly remembered for one song in particular, and I think it would fit the spirit of the evening to go ahead and let those in.

  15. dani n. says:

Don’t know if Des’ree qualifies for one hit wonder but maybe Y ou Gotta Be or Jane Child’s Don’t Wanna Fall in Love — AMBER. Got To Be Real by Cheryl Lynn for Candice. Or Think (It Takes Two) original version for Amber – it is such a funky song you can’t help but dance to it.Go and listen to it.

  16. dani n. says:

Perfect song for Candice..Hit Em Up Style by Blue Cantrell

  17. Mafs95 says:

I would have so much fun if one of these girls sang “I’m a Bitch” by Meredith Brooks LOOOOL
    .
I remember listening to that song when I was 4 or 5 years old, it was one of the first ones ahah

    • My Alter Ego says:

Since the term “bitch” is likely not considered “family fare” here in the States, it would seem unlikely that anyone would do it. It’s probably not a song the producers would even think to get cleared.

      • Mafs95 says:

They could say… I’m a itch? LOL, ok that’s stupid

        • Adam Fachry says:

LOL, no. They have to “keep their mouth shut” when they utter the word. Don’t you remember Breanna Steer’s performance of “Flaws and All”? There’s a line that says “I’m a bitch in the afternoon”, and she changed it to “I’m a…*putting her finger on her lips*….in the afternoon”.

  18. Tahoe Mike says:

C’mon Angie has to do “Spirit In The Sky,” by Norman Greenbaum.

    • Jasmine says:

Cool song! However, I don’t think it would go over well for Angela.

      • Tahoe Mike says:

They don’t seem to have an emoticon for “Tongue in cheek.” Still, Spirit in the Sky may be the best one hit wonder ever.
If she wants to do one for Boston, how about “Dirty Water,” by the Standelles. Not really a great tune for her voice, but it would rock if she did it.

  19. Ann says:

The verve are not be hit wonders. Maybe in America but not every where else. Sorry

  20. Mark says:

My suggestions for one hit wonders:

Candice – Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead O’Connor) She could put away the competition with this one. She would slay it.
Amber – You Gotta Be (Des’ree) This one was tough, but I think Amber could work it out.
Angie – What I Am – Edie Brickell) This could be great if she does a piano arrangement with it.
Kree – What’s Up (Four Non Blondes) Kree needs to go big or go home. She is like a Lamborghini, but instead of racing up and down the freeway she is creeping down main street at 30 mph. She needs to get out of the slow lane, stomp on the gas pedal, and leave it all on the road. No more safe, easy choices.

    • Joy says:

This could totally be a soundtrack for my middle school years…I like it! :-) All of these are great picks, but Kree doing “What’s Up” would just *make* my night.

    • Vetle says:

Omg. What’s Up for Kree would be amazing! I’m freaking out a little just thinking about it. Your choice for Candice is also cool.

    • Mark says:

      Contestants’ (my) choice round:
Candice – One (Mary J. Blige version) Another big song gives her another “Idol Moment.” She ends the week so far ahead the rest of them need binoculars just to see her dust.
Amber – Wishing Well (Terence Trend D’Arby) How cool would that be? Especially if she came out with the intent to be flirty and seductive
Angie – Zombie (The Cranberries) If she could do it without smiling, she could be amazing. Especially if she draws on the emotions of this past week.
Kree – Happy Pills (Norah Jones) She could country it up a little and it would be a nice balance to her first round song

      • Jasmine says:

Didn’t somebody a few weeks ago suggest that Angela sing Zombie by the Cranberries? I think I commented on it. This song would definitely work for Angela. She could slay that song. It could be the pimp performance and the performance of the night. Great song choice for her! Yeah, she’d get a ton of votes for this one!

        • Harvey says:

Yep, the song was released during Angela’s birthyear. Still think it would be a good pick.

        • Mark says:

I also suggested it for “Rock – Almost No Ballads” week, and I’m going to suggest it every week until she does it.

          • Jasmine says:

That’ll be fine. But we all know, that 99% of the time, none of the contestants will sing any of the songs we suggest! Maybe we should try to get in touch with her via youtube or twitter or something. I do agree that Zombie would be a really, really, really, good song choice for her. but our hopes are perhaps to high…she can’t pick good songs to save her life…most of the time anyway…which is frustrating because I know Angela is capable of greatness.

  21. scorpiosue1102 says:

Some good one hit wonders would be:
Filter “Take My Picture”, The Exciters “Tell HIm”, The Corrs “Breathless”, Nazareth “Love Hurts”, kd land “Constant Craving”, Shannon “Let the Music Play”, Godley and Creme “Cry”, Kate Bush “Running Up That Hill”, James Blunt “You’re Beautiful”….maybe take something really 80’s like “Too Shy” by Kajagoogoo and run with it.
Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” could be amazing. I could see Kree doing that.

    • My Alter Ego says:

Sinead O’Connor and kd lang as “one hit wonders” — really?

    • Leah Hoffman says:

Nazareth is no one hit wonder. “Hair of the Dog”

    • Kacey says:

Half of these people are NOT one hit wonders. Do you know anything about music? Kate Bush, in particular, is a musical icon and had multiple hits such as, “Wuthering Heights”, “Babooshka”, “Hounds of Love and, “Army Soldiers”. She even has a greatest hits album. The Corrs also had a string of hits in the 90s (“What Can I Do?”, “I Never Really Loved You Anyway”, “So Young” etc). And, Sinead O’Connor has plenty recognisable songs, “Emperor’s New Clothes”, “Mandinka”, “You Cause as Much Sorrow”.

  22. Lauren says:

Kree should sing “Sunny Came Home” for her One Hit Wonder. Love that song!

  23. Lo says:

I could see Kree or Angie singing Joan Osbourne’s “One of Us.”

    • Joy says:

Oh wow, I love so much of Joan Osborne’s music, and it just kills me that that’s the one song of hers that ever went anywhere…there are so many others that I would just die to hear Kree sing, but of course nobody knows them, and they wouldn’t fit the theme anyway…and “One of Us” isn’t a bad song or anything, but wow, do I never need to hear it again. :-)

      • Danny says:

Didn’t Joan Osbourne have one other hit song? Your point is taken in that I can’t remember what it was, but I thought she had another hit after One of Us.

  24. Hollie says:

If nobody sings “To Be With You” by Mr. Big for one hit wonders I’m gonna cry.

  25. Anna says:

Kree- “Counting Blue Cars” by Dishwalla

  26. Ervin says:

i would love that they will perform a very current choices such as “titanium” for angie, “blown away” for kree, ” listen” for amber and “and i am telling you” for candice….it is always used but this can be a showstoppers…

  27. Jess says:

I love “Tell Me” for Candice, but I think Sunshine Anderson’s “Heard It All Before” would be even better. For her personal choice, I’d love to see Mariah’s “If It’s Over” but doing Mariah two weeks in a row might be too much. She’d kill with that song, though.

    Angie

  28. Ramification says:

Candice has to do Show Me Love by Robin S

  29. Maddie Shook says:

    Angie-
    1)Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton
    2) All I Need by Within Temptation or Gravity by Sara Bareilles
    Candice-
1)It’s Raining Men by The Weather Girls (Countre Black Version)
    2) One Night Only by Jennifer Hudson (the underrated diva ballad of Dreamgirls)
    Amber-
    1) He Loves U Not by Dream (play with the arrangement to make it current)
    2) I Am Woman by Jordin Sparks or Crazy in Love ( the funk arrangement she did at the Wynn Las Vegas concert)
    Kree-
    1) ?
    2) Buried Under by Connie Britton ( Anything from Nashville really)

    • candicegloverfan says:

wow, i love the ‘one night only’ suggestion – i had forgotten about that song! during my first trip ever to nyc in 1983, i went to my first broadway show – ‘dreamgirls’. second cast, so i missed seeing jennifer holiday on the stage, though i did wear out the LP of the show’s soundtrack with her on it for years afterwards…

      • Ramification says:

One Night Only is a genius pick. Black Velvet for Kree !

      • My Alter Ego says:

candicegloverfan, I could see/hear Candice doing “One Night Only” and having a “moment” with it. Their voices are significantly different enough (Jennifer’s voice has a husky quality to it even in her upper range) that it wouldn’t sound Candice is “copying” J-Hud, even if she sang it exactly the way Jennifer did/does (and, I think it unlikely that Candice wouldn’t infuse some of her own style into it).
        **
That said, I would worry a bit for Candice if she sings ballads again this week, since that’s what she’s done for the last two weeks. I, too, think Candice is the cat’s meow (mind you, I also recognize Amber’s huge potential, because that young lady also has an amazing voice and can sing difficult music as effortlessly as Candice), so I don’t want her to lose momentum. because, heaven forbid(!!), the AI viewers were “bored.”

    • Jasmine says:

Do you know how many votes Angela would get if she sang A Thousand Miles….a ton of votes. That song was such a HUGE hit! Everybody knew that song, it was so popular. And of course, it’s piano based so Angela should feel right at home singing it and perhaps draw out some emotion because despite its upbeat tempo, the song is really emotional. Yes, everyone would vote for Angela if she sang this song.
And also the song All I Need by Within Temptation….this one could be a showstopper. It’s in the perfect range for Angela’s voice. It’s loud, it’s organic, it builds, it has moments…mmmhhm…Angela would smother this song in a good way.
Yes indeed. These contestants need to start looking on this website for song choices. I mean, I think the fans have a better idea of what their favorite contestants should sing!

      • My Alter Ego says:

Hmmm– no, not “everybody” loved it. The only thing that “makes” this song (a song), is the piano — it’s not accompaniment, it’s integral to the whole piece. The vocal part isn’t remotely interesting.
        **
Since I don’t care for Angie to go farther, yes, indeed, Angie, slit your throat with this piece of crap.

        • Jasmine says:

How rude! I didn’t say everyone loved it, i said that everyone knew the song. there’s a difference. There are songs that I hate but i still know them because they get played a lot. So I see you’re into Candice. I do have to admit that she has the best voice, but I’m more attracted towards Angela. She seems to have that it-factor for me. She’s my favorite. but oh well, i kind of think she won’t win, Candice will, but I’m not giving up yet. She’s still here so I’m going to keep voting for her until then. if she doesn’t win, she still could have better success than the winner, look at Jennifer Hudson…Candice is good though. Angela’s where it’s at though.

          • MC says:

A Thousand MIles would be the prefect choice for Angie because it highlights her piano playing. Nicki correctly pointed out that is what separates Angie from the other girls. It’s one of my favorite songs btw. It doesn’t have glory notes, but omg glory notes don’t make a great song (maybe this comes as a shock to some AI viewers). Also, Angie won’t have to worry about going sharp vocally and she can concentrate on creating a mood. That is pretty much how Phil Phillips won, not by hitting high notes. FWIW, check out Vanessa Carlton’s live in-studio rendition of it and then try saying the song has no power.

  30. gmfrgsn says:

Would love to hear Candice do a jazzy number on “32 Flavors” by Ani DiFranco (in the style of Alana Davis) or “Everybody Here Wants You” by Jeff Buckley (especially this one). And ever since I saw Angie Miller take to her piano I’ve wanted her to take on something by Tori Amos — “Cornflake Girl” would be particularly good.

  31. Isabel says:

There is an Australian artist named Katie Noonan who did a version of Crazy that I feel Candice could kill (in a good way). She has a way of infusing her style into most of the songs she chooses. I look forward to seeing what she does pick. She is the winner in my mind. I still love her version of Ordinary People (which was a song I enjoyed already but she made it better IMO).

    • My Alter Ego says:

Isabel, I agree about Candice’s “Ordinary People.” While I hadn’t heard the song before, I can’t get Candice’s rendition out of my head. I haven’t listened to that performance for, at least 3 weeks, but I still “hear” (and enjoy) it. LOL!

  32. Adam Fachry says:

    One Hit Wonder:
Candice Glover – Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U, Lou Reed’s Walk On The Wild Side, Cardigans’ Lovefool.
Angie Miller – Howie Day’s Collide, Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars
Kree Harrison – Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, Talk Talk’s It’s My Life
Amber Holcomb – Macy Gray’s I Try, Cheryl Lyn ‘s Got To Be Real

    Free Choice:
Candice Glover -Talking Heads’ Houses In Motion or Burning Down The House, Tom Waits’ Big Black Mariah, David Bowie’s Moonage Daydream, Erykah Badu’s Window Seat, Ledisi’s Turn Me Loose, Tune-Yards’ Powa, Anita Baker’s Caught Up In The Rapture, Lisa Stansfield’s All Around The World, Massive Attack’s Unfinished Sympathy, Drake’s Marvin’s Room (her cover of this on youtube is so gorgeous), Dinah Washington’s version of Love For Sale (LOL, I go crazy with Candice. I wouldn’t mind a whole season of her singing songs that I pick)
Angie Miller – Tori Amos’ version of Depeche Mode’s Enjoy The Silence
Kree Harrison – Neko Case’s This Tornado Loves You, Loretta Lynn’s Have Mercy, Gillian Welch’s Dark Turn of Mind, Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You, Patsy Cline’s When You Need a Laugh, Merle Haggard’s Whatever Happened to Me
Amber Holcomb – Ciara’s Promise, Aaliyah’s More Than a Woman, Jessie Ware’s Running (the right Jessie from UK that should’ve been popular), Janelle Monae’s Tightrope.

    • Mark says:

I like a lot of these suggestions, but they’re just too obscure. Houses in Motion, Moon Age Day Dream? Great songs, but c’mon — you, me, and five other viewers will know them and everyone else will be shaking their heads. Marian will be lost, Randy will make up a story, and Nikki will go off on a rant about waffles and blueberry syrup.

      • Adam Fachry says:

Lol, I know. Like I said, I go crazy with Candice. It may sound cliche and very Idol judges-esque, but she really can sing anything. Particularly Houses In Motion, I once found a live performance of it featuring this really great black soul singer, and when I revisited it earlier this morning, I immediately pictured Candice doing it in my mind. Also, Moonage Daydream might come off as too R-Rated for Idol. But wouldn’t it be fun to see her embracing her inner ferocity by singing lines like “I’ll be a rock ‘n’ rollin’ bitch for you”?

        • My Alter Ego says:

@ Adam, I’d agree with you about Candice being able to sing anything. She’s got a gift; she knows how to use it. But, with such a tight race to the finish, she can’t afford to lose momentum. She needs to pick extremely wisely. Thus far, she’s really been the one to consistently pick the right song for her, so I’ll leave it to her judgment.
          **
@Mark, LOL at the Nicki waffles/syrup reference. I remain baffled by her foray in that direction.

    • Cat Lady says:

As soon as I heard this theme, “Chasing Cars” popped into my mind for Angie.

    • Atlanta Mike says:

wow I love the free choices you gave for all of them :)!!!

    • The Beach says:

Hey Adam, I love Candice too and would really love to hear her take on lots of your suggestions. I had to laugh, though, about Walk on the Wild Side. Besides mainly being a “talking” song, can you imagine the censors going crazy with the bleep button on some of those lyrics? :-)

      • Adam Fachry says:

LOL, yeah that one may be the most bizarre. I think it’s because spoken-word kind of singing has never been done on Idol, so again, I went (too) crazy and thought Candice could deliver such conception.

    • Jasmine says:

I just hollered when I read your suggestions for Angela. In a good way, though, because I loooovvveee that Howie Day song Collide. It just brings up so many mixed emotions for me because the song SOUNDS sad, but the message is so not sad. The lyrics are amazing. ” The dawn is breaking. A light shining through. You’re barely waking and I’m tangled up in you.” just….goosies for sure! Oh my god, that song is so beautiful and I think Angela would do it justice, yes indeed. And also Chasing Cars, yes, that would work too, but Collide for sure!

      • Adam Fachry says:

Right? I’m not familiar with contemporary christian music, but I always picture Angie as an AC artist, so I picked those two.

Also, I haven’t got the chance to explainmy reasoning behind Cardigans’ Lovefool for Candice. I think this song could go with the Lovesong approach. Just like Lovesong, Loveffol’s verses and chorus are not exactly filled with a lot of notes, it leaves the structure of the song flexible enough to be added with her own choices of runs.

  33. Leticia Prado says:

Somebody is bound to sing Nothing Compares 2u, which would be okay.
I kinda wanted Angie to go with something like 4 Non-Blondes What’s up?
Please let everybody very, very far from Minnie Riperton-Lovin You.

  34. Woodmeister says:

Don’t know if they would qualify as one hit wonders and I don’t know who should sing them but I would love to hear someone sing “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor), “At Seventeen” (Janis Ian) and/or “Different Drum” (Stone Ponies ?). Of course as these songs are older than the contestants …..God I’m old.

  35. julia says:

i would absolutelyy love to see angie do haley’s “undone”. but i feel like she might just do her original song again, i mean the judges are begging her to sing it every chance they get.

    • Adam Fachry says:

I find it funny that her original song is kinda the epitome of her own one-hit-wonder on the show. I don’t think any performance of hers after that one ever tops it.

      • My Alter Ego says:

Adam, I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. Haley rarely ever performs “Undone” live; that’s she’s chosen not to perform it provides an opportunity for a great deal of speculation (and that’s all it is), but it’s far too early in the game to be making a “pronouncement” that she’s a “one hit wonder.”

        • Adam Fachry says:

No, I’m sorry. I wasn’t talking about Haley. I love her. I’m talking about Angie. Hence why I used the word “performance”. I was referring to her original song back in Hollywood week which imo, is sort of a one-hit-wonder for her, given her body of work since then.

    • Jasmine says:

Glad you mentioned Haley Reinhart. That song Undone would song great with Angela singing it. Haley Reinhart along with Angela Miller and Elise Testone, they’re my favorite contestants of Idol ever! They’re all great at what they do.

    • HitTheGroundRunning says:

OTOH it would be sort of unfortunate to label Haley as one and done already before she has even begun! :)
      .
Plus Undone never ever got released (nor Hit The Ground Running, Liar, Wonderland, etc. actually nothing that she actually had a big hand in writing on it ever got released!) as a single so 0 official singles sales hardly counts as a hit (but do check out Real Music Live website where she did a great version of that and Oh My! live). They did an annoying dump and run and never got a second or third single out there, which was totally criminal, especially since none she wrote herself (which was basically all of them except for the one they did release) got released.

      • HitTheGroundRunning says:

oops damn I got sucked into the stupid thing where everyone kept mention the one hit wonders stuff and I forgot about contestant’s choices! So yeah bring it on, heck let each of them sing one :). Or better bring her on to be the featured contestant from the past and let her do a couple.

  36. deedee says:

“Walking In Memphis” is one of my favourite one hit wonders. Angie is the obvious choice to sing it at the piano, but I’d prefer to hear Kree do it.

    • candicegloverfan says:

yeah, i’d enjoy hearing someone do it, too, and probably kree. whoever does it – they should listen to the cher version – i just love it.

    • Leah Hoffman says:

“Walking In Memphis” is one of my favourite one hit wonders. Angie is the obvious choice to sing it at the piano, but I’d prefer to hear Kree do it.

      Finally, a good idea.

    • My Alter Ego says:

Hi deedee, I don’t mean to be unkind, but after listening to “Walking in Memphis” I can understand why the song was a “one hit wonder” — in fact, I wonder why anyone liked it to begin with. I realize this is all subjective, but I don’t find anything likeable about this song.
      **
I don’t find it musically interesting (I’ve spent a lot of years being involved) at all. Why do you like it?

      • deedee says:

Why do I like it? Because I think it’s a great song! I love the mood and the whole feel of it. I also love that the lyrics are autobiographical about Mark Kohn’s journey to Memphis and his experiences while there (there really was a “Muriel” who played piano every Friday at “The Hollywood”, and she really did ask him to play one time, and really did ask him if he was a Christian). I’ve just always loved this song.

  37. Jake says:

I love “Emmylou” by First Aid Kit and “You Get What You Give” by New Radicals, but I don’t see these working well as solo performances.

    My picks would be:

    ONE-HIT WONDERS:
Amber Holcomb – “Don’t Leave Me This Way” (Thelma Houston)
Angie Miller – “What’s Up” (4 Non Blondes) [at the piano]
Candice – “We’re Not Gonna Take It” (Twisted Sister)
    Kree – “Nothing Compares 2 U” (Sinéad O’Connor)

(I know the Candice choice is out there, but I think she could pull it off amazingly.)

    CONTESTANTS’ CHOICE –
Candice Glover – “Déjà Vu” (Beyoncé Knowles)
Amber Holcomb – “More Than Anyone” (Gavin DeGraw)
Angela Miller – “Love Song” (Sara Bareilles)
Kree Harrison – “Undone” (Haley Reinhart)

(These four were all choices I’d made at the very beginning of the season and would still love to see.)

    • Jake says:

“Somebody That I Used To Know” (Gotye) could also be a solid choice for Amber in either theme.

    • Adam Fachry says:

Of all Slezak’s pick, You Get What You Give for Angie is extremely out of place imo. Angie didn’t have that big of a voice to sing anthemic tunes, especially the one that’s so energy-driven. I can imagine her breath being all over the place, unable to keep up with the tempo, etc. The only way that song would work if she slows it down completely which would undermine the appeal of the song completely.

      • TheGirlsRock says:

An odd comment for what many would say is arguably one of the biggest voices on the show and who else could provide the energy? That being said….I would not pick it for her anyway.

        • Adam Fachry says:

It just didn’t fit her whole aesthetic imo. I think the song would be tailor-made for someone like Siobhan Magnus.

    • Jasmine says:

uhhh….love song for Angela? Heck no! That song is so annoying now. I used to like it but they overplayed the heck out of the song! It could possibly be one of the most overplayed songs in music history.

      • Amarilla says:

Overplayed where? On your local radio station? If you liked it initially, and the rest of us haven’t been overexposed to it, then it’s a fine choice, even if it doesn’t suit Jasmine personally.

        • Jasmine says:

Yeah, it was overplayed. It was a music video that they showed a lot on tv. They did play it alot on my local radio station, so that’s what I’m talking about. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I used to love the song, but because it’s been played too much, I kind of forgot why it was so popular to begin with. Based off of her voice, this song doesn’t suit Angela at all. I mean, she could pull it off, but it wouldn’t be nothing special because the song is kinda cheesy-sounding. Angela needs a HUGE vocal moment. This song just doesn’t do it for her at all. but that’s my opinion. and no way will i try to force it on you.

  38. Real Deal says:

whatever song choice they’re gonna make, should ring in the music brain of viewers, must be familiar or else nobody will vote for her. the secret of idol votes is on viewers identifying with the song.

    • The Beach says:

This is so true. They are much better off singing something familiar to most of the viewers. A couple of recent exceptions I can think of though: Jessica’s “Stuttering” and Phillip’s “Volcano”. But it’s a risky move.

  39. Danny says:

Yea- just what the original One Hit Wonders want. To be reminded that they’re one hit wonders all over again on national tv.

  40. Ms Chris says:

I would love to hear Candice sing Eurythmics “Who’s that Girl.” A perfect song for her!

  41. Mark says:

Amber singing an Adam Lambert song seriously!!! Have you taken your litium yet. I mean really! Really! Come on Seth Meyers and Amy Pohler shout with me REALLY!!!!!!! Please that will never ever I mean never ever ever happen.

    • The Final Say says:

Amber needs a song where she can show her style the wat she did in “my funny valentine”. I miss that..

    • The Final Say says:

We all heard the four ladies more than enough. I believe anybody deserve the idol title. Just hope who wins will really be the one America loves. Coz if not, we are making another mistake like we did in the past seasons.

      • My Alter Ego says:

Well, if sales are an indication, apparently “we” (and I have to count myself out of that “we” with P2) didn’t make such a mistake last year. Phillip Phillips seems to have some thriving sales. I haven’t contributed to that, mind you, because he’s far removed from what I consider “music”, but there seems to be an audience willing to gobble up what he does.

        • Adam Fachry says:

Philips is pretty much lucky that faux-indie rock acts are all the rage at the moment. Home, though good, sounds like a rejected Mumford and Sons track.

  42. TheGirlsRock says:

I’m guessing for her choice Angie might pick a well known Christian song. She hasn’t had the opportunity lately. Someone up the thread suggested her original song but I think she’ll keep that in the bag in the event she would make the finale. But she also has a supply of big song covers on youitube she could choose from.

    • It's not all about the money! says:

Angie needs to hold on to her original material, so far she has played a brilliant game setting herself up for a recording deal with Sparrow by a)promoting two of their artists thus far on the show and b) using Idol to market herself. Her best option would be to get as far as she can, continue to build her brand then as soon as she can, record and release “You set me Free” Jimmy is not into producing a Christian artist and yet in his mind knows that she will have a successful career in that genre and that’s why he flip flops between praising her talents and criticizing her delivery. Her You Tube channel, twitter, Facebook plus her marketability factors have all been brilliantly managed. She knows what she wants and is definitely like Randy said “on her way”

    • Cat Lady says:

I don’t think she could get away with repeating a song when everyone else is learning two. That could (and probably would by her many detractors) be construed as laziness. She can pull that song out again when she repeats one of her performances as a member of the Top 2.

  43. Vince says:

Honestly, I want Candice to do It Doesn’t Matter Anymore for the Contestant’s Choice. The arrangement she did in Season 12. Maybe not this week but I really want her to do it by herself on the show.

    • Harvey says:

If not, she should definitely do it as her reprise. It would be the perfect victory song against the judges/producers who didn’t think she was good enough for the show.

  44. Praying for some “Mambo No. 5″!

  45. The Verve – not a one hit wonder!!

  46. Joe says:

I think it’s kind of rude for Idol to do a theme called One Hit Wonders. It’s one thing when it’s a journalist or a VH1 show discussing that, but to actually come out and say the songs by the artists being sung were the only hit in their careers is a bit of a slap in the face. I’m not usually sensitive about things, but I can see just from the comments that some of these bands have fans that know more songs than the general public does. Hopefully, it’ll raise awareness for artists who may have other good music in their catalogue no one has heard.

    • deedee says:

The one hit wonders know they’re one hit wonders, so it’s not really an insult to them. They may have made lots of brilliant music, but if only one of their tracks became a hit, then they are one hit wonders by definition.

    • HitTheGroundRunning says:

It’s not really that much of a slap in face. Heck many of the best known, most fondly remembered bands/singers from the 80s were more or less 1 hit wonders. It’s sort of an honor in a way. They took over the charts like nobodies business and are now some of the first names anyone thinks of when they think of that era. Not so bad is it really??

  47. twnkltoze says:

This really shows how completely out of touch I am with today’s music with regards to Contestant’s choice. I don’t recognize any of the songs, let alone the artists.

  48. lisawinston says:

I think Candice should do “Wildflower” by Skylark. I don’t think it’s ever been done on the show, which surprises me. And she’d sing the crap out of it. I’m pretty sure they never had another hit, though I DO think someone later covered it. But it’s the artist, not the song, that the “one-hit wonder” refers to and Skylark’s version was the original hit.

BTW if anyone does “Please Come To Boston,” it would be tough call whether it was brilliant or pandering.

  49. Karrah says:

I would be happy if anyone, not just Angie, chose to do “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals. Such a great song. Really I’ll be pleased as long as no one does “Black Velvet.”

  50. Karrah says:

Oh geez, I just realized I would love if Kree did 4 Non Blondes “What’s Up.”
