Heroes ReturnSave the cheerleader, launch a new programming initiative?

MSN, which is making a big push into original programming via Xbox, is in talks to revive NBC’s superhero drama Heroes, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Details remain sketchy, but sources confirm that MSN is interested in relaunching the once red-hot NBC Universal franchise with new stories and heroes, while mixing in cameos from the original series’ cast (schedules and interest permitting). The talks are said to be in the preliminary stages.

In February, MSN hired former NBC development executive Jada Miranda to oversee production of its fledgling Xbox entertainment studio under ex-CBS president Nancy Tellem (who came on board last fall).

Heroes‘ four-season run on NBC ended in February 2010.

  • I’m one of the few people who stuck with the original through its entire run and I can confidently say I have no interest in this whatsoever.

    • Agreed. Loved the show at first but it quickly lost steam and I’ve never felt like it was cut too short. If anything it went on too long. Hayden Panettiere is much better utilized on Nashville anyway.

      • It only felt that way because of the writers and Kring blunderings!!

        • Agreed. Sadly this is one of many shows that was destroyed by the writers strike. Although I would love to see Heroes revived and brought back to it’s season 1 glory. I don’t know if this is possible with a different cast.

      • I agree … I feel ‘in love’ with the actors and my hope is that original writer, Oliver Grigsby, of the BEST eps. is on board…it would be sweet if Greg Berlanti was tapped as showrunner/director.
I started with ep. 1 of Heroes and stayed till the very end!! .. yep, and @Sylars_Army was On Board at the very first !!

        • I would love the show to continue I just watched the last episode that was released and was left with to be continued and thoughts still wondering! I would put money down to revive this series with at least a couple of the original cast. A complete new set of people wouldn’t make it a Heros remake. I believe placing new people in the cast would do well just not to many! This is my first comment on anything ever. Please contact me if any help to revive the show is needed.

I would like to see where the storyline could go. I still watch all of the seasons over and every so often because i really miss the characters. I dont think I have ever been so attached to a show before. I would like to know if its ever going to be revived

        Most Likely to return:
Greg Grunberg (Matt Parkman): No current lead projects.
Noah Gray (Micah Sanders): No current lead projects.
James Kyson Lee (Ando masahashi): No current lead projects.

        • Really? Stale is doing the Star Trek flicks and more than likely American Horror Story Season 3. He’s probably the most important character in the whole show. Next to of course HRG and Claire and the petrellis. But they could just reference the Petrellis. Maybe a show about the company HRG works for and do it like a sci fi cop show and periodically have recurring members and nods?

          Greg Grunberg (Matt Parkman)
          James Kyson Lee (Ando Masahashi)
          Cristine Rose (Angela Petrelli)
          Zachary Quinto (Sylar)
Milo Ventigmilia (Peter Petrelli) – With ALL his powers
          Hayden Panetierre (Claire Bennet)
          Masi Oka (Hiro Nakamura)
          Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder Suresh)
          Jack Coleman (Noah Bennet)
Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli) – I know he died but Hiro can time travel. They could easily change the timeline

The characters I DON’T ever want to see again are:

Ali Larter (Tracy Strauss) – Although the last sister Barbra might work.
          Dana Davis (Monica Dawson)
          Dana Ramirez (Mya Herrera)
Robert Knepper (Samuel Sullivan) – Probably my most hated character in all 4 seasons.

Great show. I never watched it on air but just finally finished it on Netflix and can definitely say I’d love if it returned. The characters were indeed fantastic. But the writers did it once, they can do it again with a new cast. You would just have to keep an open mind going into it.

      • Yes. Lord knows the show was starting to sink when maya was introduced, don’t get me wrong I love the entire show, but I have to say I found myself wanting to turn it off when maya came on. I really had to push through that to get to the good stuff. Let them return to the story they left off with or don’t bring it back at all!! I love the show and they will destroy it if they get new actors and characters (at least bring back the favorites i.e. Sylar, Peter, Claire). I still wonder why they canceled it (or why the writers set up that cliffhanger that would never be fulfilled or explained they should have done a epilogue like harry potter and not have clair run up and do something crazy at the last second). Please bring back the show I love the way We love it!!!

      • You can’t just revive a show like Heroes. Especially when you tried to end it the way you did. Viewers are going to want to see the original cast continue where it was left off. A new cast would be pointless. In simplest terms it would ruin the show entirely.

      • I think the show was amazing from start to almost finish. I only say that because of them ending the show so abruptly it left so mmany unanswered questions. I think a heroes remake or continuation would be awesome! As long as some of the same actors are casted in their old roles. I know hayden/Claire can’t come back because of Nashville and maybe a few others are involved with something longterm as well but sylar, peter, hiro and Ando need to come back as the same characters. It would be nice if all the main characters were to at least do a couple appearances in the beginning jus to tie up some loose ends and all and then start introducing new heroes. Throughout the series they have introduced many new and different pple so I don’t see it being too hard. I want to know who sylar has a kid with and why his name is Noah and things like that. I believe that if you guys could get at least a handful of the original cast to sign a contract and you tie up those loose ends that it will be a hit with the right story line. How could it not? I love this show and miss it! Bring it back w Peter and Sylar!

    • Better scripts, better scripts, better scripts. The first two season were identical to each other. There was no growth or interesting storytelling. This could be resolved in the new show with compelling storytelling. How do you go wrong with superpowered characters? I’m looking forward to what could be.

Peter Patrelli sits at the table with the theives who possess his identity in a box…. Seriously? He has enough power to simply have taken the box that was right there in front of him. Simply put…. The show became a pure bust after that.

        • Please see my separate comment, which is basically this: Tim did not ruin the show. It was a room full of writers, not just one man and a computer. He was just one more voice in the writer’s room and did not have total creative control over every storyline.

  • Oh dear, I’m too burned by what happened to the original run to even know if I would give this a chance. Maybe if they announced that Tim Kring isn’t involved in anyway, I’ll give it a shot because he ran what could have been an amazing series completely into the ground with repetitive, nonsensical storylines.

  • I think that a new series with new heroes (especially ones they were willing to kill off) would make for an interesting show. Maybe take the American Horror Story anthology route… each season is a new batch of Heroes. This would free them up to use or kill off the ones they have each season. The original show was originally planning to kill off Heroes and replace them with new ones, but people got too attached to Peter and the Cheerleader and Hiro and they thought it would kill the show to kill them off. Ironically, I think it killed the show more by coming up with contrived storylines about regeneration, reboots and time travel in order to keep them alive.

And yes, I did get convuluted in the third season and I didn’t like the story in season four -but after enduring the current season of Once Upon A Time -Heroes, to me, is so much more interesting at it’s end than OUAT is rght now. Both series had that magical feel in their first seasons. I hope any revival brings back that air of mystery and discovery.

    • funny that l feel the opposite
      - The advantage with ONCE is that they have really good individual episodes
      and the characters are interesting
      but Heroes
      - killed off the most interesting characters e.g. Niki and Elle
and focused or wrote poor story lines for those who were left
Claire became horrible poor Hayden the girl acts her socks off in Nashville because its written pretty well
-The show lost something big in season 2 and never got it back
-and not to mention after 4 years
the Heroes should have been put together
instead they had separate and annoying story lines
      - The killing off good characters for drammatic effect sucked

The biggest mistake ONCE avoided was
      - no keeping the curse thing
Storybrooke scenes bored me a lot in season 1 except for well some
      -Everyone knows who they are
      Once can be saved

For Heroes it became so bad no one could save it

It was sad to watch the writers run the show into the ground
l hope ONCE comes back with a bang next season

      • I agree and disagree. OUAT is in danger of going the way of Heroes IMO. The problem with OUAT was breaking the curse too soon and introducing the tri-world storytelling style for the first half of the season. This lead to the introduction of too many new characters, like Heroes, that interfered with stories about the core cast and their storylines such that the intended “themes” at the start of the season became completely undermined. Then there was the wishy-washy redemption thing with Regina like Sylar (sp?) and killing off Cora too soon as Hereos did with several characters who still had potential to create interesting conflict in order to introduce new lame threats (Tamara seems to be like that government agency thing that just stunk). I fear OUAT won’t learn the lessons of Heroes, taking a hit idea and ruining it with disjointed plotlines, an over-filled cast, killing off the “likable” bad guys too soon while keeping around the ones (like Hook) that are just poorly written, and too many wonky hiatuses. Also, I agree about Claire; Henry’s getting just as annoying on OUAT. Hopefully, if this MSN thing goes through, they will just stick with a short anthology-type thing like (hopefully) the Once Wonderland spin-off will do, or I have little hope for either. Maybe NBC should forget saving the cheerleader to save the world and save some money to save their network with better pilots for 2013/2014?

        • This is exactly how I feel too and why I compared OUAT with Heroes. Both shows had great first seasons -but really suffered during the second. I’m not getting a good feeling about OUAT’s future -I don’t think they learned Heroes example. Both concepts went too broadly too quickly. But I had a lot of faith in Heroes to pull it all in -it just fell apart when producers added too many superhero elements. Just like OUAT has thrown in everything in season 2 -I’m getting bored far more quckly with OUAT than I had with Heroes.

  • Seeing as season four ended (SPOILER ALERT) with Claire outing people with powers, this could work very well storyline wise with a new batch of Heroes. If they’re smart though, they could add one or two original characters like Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) and Sylar (Zachary Quinto) OR possibly Claire (Hayden Panettiere) (if Nashville is canceled) to familiarize people with the show and what it used to be.

Comment by Jarrod Mitchell – April 17, 2013 08:45 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I think they should stray away from really adding ANY of the original characters from the first run as anything other than cameo roles. That was the reason the first run crashed and burned – they weren’t willing to let any of the characters go (Claire, Peter, Sylar, Hiro, Nathan) long after their storylines were more than finished. They also dropped characters that had plenty of potential and story left in them (Elle, Monica, Micah, Adam, Daphne, Meredith, Candice).

NBC could never give it any certainty on how many episodes it would have or if it would even get more episodes at all, And I think the show writers worked wonders with what NBC gave them to work with.

The fact that the show was done in volumes could work to it’s advantage. re-inventing itself each volume. I think the show killed itself pandering to certain characters…. No Hiro, no Nikki/barb/Jess, no claire, no peter and no sylar for sure. I think this could work.

  • The original was ruined by the producers trying to pander to the fickle viewer based on their internet posts. Examples: Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere started dating in real life so writers tried to draw on that attention and wrote in situations where Claire and Peter were romantically linked such as future Claire declaring her love for Peter. The fickle, ignorant masses still reeling from from the premature cancellation of Veronica Mars fell madly in love with Kristen Bell’s Elle; even though Elle as a character was uneven and badly written. Sylar was at his best as an enigmatic psychopath but because so many fangirls liked the fact that Zachary Quinto and Kristen Bell are real life good friends; the writers and producers in their great wisdom thought it would be a good idea for Elle and Sylar to hookup. These are just some example of how NOT to produce a show. Writers should have the courage to write their stories and tell them they way they want. Not to be hacks pandering to the whims of shippers. This is why Glee is failing and why Heroes was ultimately cancelled. Unless MSN does something about that mindset; they shouldn’t even bother.

She loved him as family, not “in that way.” Were you in the writer’s room? Have you spoken to any of the writers? You’re posting opinion as fact.

  • I loved HEROES, even when it went totally off the rails on a crazy train. I’m with Jarrod: NBC shouldn’t have canceled it; they should’ve let the crazy continue on into Season 5 for syndication purposes. But bringing it back? I don’t know how I feel about that. I got attached to the original characters, so I would like them to come back, but I really don’t think any of the actors would.
So maybe the American Horror Story-style anthology approach is best… ? I guess as a fan who watched the entire series, I’d like it to come back in some form or other. Just let it be known that despite my extreme, passionate fandom for the show, I can’t really remember the story beyond Season 1, and that’s pretty sad.

  • Heroes :The Next Generation.

Half a decade after Claire makes the existence of empowered beings public knowledge, what effect does it have in the world?

The previous series sets the stage for a very cool follow up.

I’m hoping we get that and not a reboot, that would suck.

I also hope (or should I say “I also S”? I just saw the trailer for Man of Steel…) that whoever they put in charge learns from the mistakes the previous series made and doesn’t repeat them.

I am concerned that whatever show we do get might lack the production values of the original. I’d hate to end up with a show produced on the budget of a webseries. The Heroes webisodes were not that good, and while things like Mortal Kombat: Legacy and BSG: Blood & Chrome were okay, they aren’t great. They still look cheap. High-concept cheap, but cheap nonetheless. They’re doing with computers what 25 years ago Roger Corman was doing with matte paintings.

If they can do that, they might have a great show.

The problem with Heroes is that they abandonned their original plan to feature a new cast every season and had no idea where to go with their existing characters.

Heroes has a lot of potential, it’s just a question on whether they can deliver on that potential.

I’ve never seen a show where people openly celebrated a show’s cancellation like I did with Heroes. If they want a suitable geek audience, why not just adapt a critically acclaimed graphic novel or video game property? Alan Wake or Perfect Rain could make for a great TV series.

Arthur Petrelli is the one that took Peter’s powers which was the biggest writing mistake of the entire show. I liked all four seasons but it did suffer after Peter lost his powers. Season four was probably the worst. The circus group was terrible.

If they do revive it I hope they go back along that vein and not some weirdo trying to take over the world and the Heroes again.
Going to be hard to even have guest shots from those already in series, so they would have to start again with a new cast.

  • I tend to think that, although the TV-loving internet remembers the way the show fizzled, the general public may have forgotten the show’s decline.

Watching the Season 1 DVD, especially, I see a lot of promise in the concept… we could luck out and maybe most could overlook the bad times.

My own personal feeling is that Heroes fizzled partly because the stakes were gone. People would die and be back by the next commercial break. That downfall really started with the Season 1 finale, which had no on-screen casualties or consequence. Also, some really bad retconning in Season 3 (“Villains” still makes me shudder) hurt the show’s lore a lot.

All they’d really need is even one person from the original show and I think it could work… though I wish it would be on NBC itself, since they’re more in need of hits. I don’t believe Heroes as a franchise is dead… I don’t think MSN/Xbox can afford to make it, but maybe they’ll do a DirecTV/Friday Night Lights deal where they eventually run on broadcast? We’ll see… I do hope this pans out, and thanks as always to Ausiello for sharing the news. I trust news like this a lot more coming from you, moreso than say that silly Friends rumor yesterday.

As bad as the show got, the Petrellis kept me watching and the fact that the bad future the elders tried to change, what happened in 5 years gone, actually happened (Thanks Claire!) and Nathan died – etc – made for the most depressing end of a series every.

Peter and an alive Nathan(oh come on, it would not be hard to bring him back, this is Heroes!) can be mentors to the younger generation(Nathan’s two sons, Micah, Molly, etc) while still being a part of the action. It’s what happened to the original after the first season. I stuck through it until about halfway through the third I think and by that time I just didn’t care what happened to anyone. A lot of the characters were interesting, but yeah, somewhere along the line the show just lost the spark it had (starting with the mildly confusing season one finale) and then yeah, popular characters basically creeping into odd storylines because they were fan favourites.

A post-reveal world could be interesting, provided they actually set up a good story and execute it well. I’d also be willing to give it a chance for sure if Jack Coleman came back.

  • I thought season one was the best tv series I ever watched. I came in late and had to buy it on Itunes. I stayed up until 3:00 a.m. watching each episode. Amazing. Then season two came along and I blamed the weakness on the writers strike. Then I don’t know what happened. Those writers took an amazing concept and ruined it by adding in more and more heroes that we didn’t care about, stupid plot lines, conspiracies, etc. Why couldn’t they just stick with the concept that got them amazing reviews?

I see this with other series as well. Ordinary People is one. Great beginning. Ordinary people with extraordinary abilities solving or helping situations. Then they added bad guys, conspiracies, etc. until CANCELLED.

The writers ought to ask my permission before they start messing with a show that is working. Arrow writers – don’t screw with it. It’s perfect the way it is.

They set up a villain that was supposed to be “worse than Sylar” and then quickly backtracked and brought Sylar back because people liked Zachary Quinto too much. IMO, he overstayed his welcome. If you ignore the “chapter 2″ preview, Heroes could be seen as a brilliant miniseries that ended very well. Hopefully they get it right this time. And I agree about Once.
