Pilot News: Shawn Hatosy Books Reckless Role — Another Bad Omen for Southland?

Get More: Casting News, Pilots

SHatosy_300Another Southland star has secured a Plan B.

Shawn Hatosy has joined CBS’ drama pilot Reckless, casting further doubt on the future of TNT’s acclaimed cop drama, our sister site Deadline reports.

The project is described as a sultry legal show set in Charleston, South Carolina, where a gorgeous Yankee litigator and a Southern City Attorney (The O.C.‘s Cam Gigandet) struggle to hide their intense attraction while clashing over a police sex scandal.

Hatosy will once again play a law enforcer as bad-boy police detective Trey.

The ensemble also includes Michael Gladis (Mad Men), Georgina Haig (Fringe) and Kim Wayans (In Living Color).

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) will direct from a script by Dana Stevens (City Of Angels), who serves as an executive producer alongside Ian Sander and Kim Moses (Ghost Whisperer).

Hatosy’s casting is in second position to Southland, which is currently airing its fifth season. The announcement of his new gig, as well as co-star Ben McKenzie’s casting in the CBS pilot The Advocates, suggests the perpetual bubble show faces an uphill climb to Season 6.

  • I wish Shawn Hatosy played the “gorgeous Yankee litigator” instead of the bad boy cop. Interesting dynamic, no?

    • I’d watch that.

When Ben McKenzie booked his pilot I thought maybe he was just planning to leave after this season, but this news seems to all but confirm this is going to be the end of Southland.

  • I’d even watch him in porn. Whatever he does he makes it worth it.

  • Wait a minute, so both ABC and CBS have different pilots called Reckless? Couldn’t they think of a more original name?

  • Ben McKenzie I know, and I heard the news about his new potential lead, but I cant’ say that I knew who this is, only by sight from seeing Southland.

Sounds like the writing is pretty much on the wall if actors are given permission to line up other work.

  • Oh, that depresses me. I didn’t know Southland was in that much trouble. So am I actually going to have to say goodbye to Southland, Community, Dexter, 30 Rock, and Breaking Bad all in the same year? Cruel cruel cruel.

  • This truly is a bad omen for one of my favorite shows. Southland is one of the best cast, written and directed shows currently on television and it is a crying shame that the dolts and dullards who are off watching the network shows, don’t know what they are missing. I’ve enjoyed the run. Good luck to the cast, I know with your talent, you’ll do vey well.

  • Southland is one of my favorite shows. I love shows that aren’t afraid to dark.

  • Wow I really love Southland. The writing and the acting both top notch. I thought it did good numbers on TNT. If both these guys are booking other series . Man what does it take to keep a great show???? I don’t even care where it fits on the schedule or that it does such a short series run of episodes I faithfully follow it and watch it. No dvr.

  • Who’s to say that Southland doesn’t undergo a retooling with a few fresh faces? It would make sense from both a story perspective (new blood) and budgetwise. At least, that’s what I hope.

  • Not to be bitter but I will not feel bad if (dare I say when) these new pilots fail. Southland is an excellent show, top notch writing and characters who are real and have depth; I hate to see it go. There is so little quality TV anymore, we need to keep the little quality we get.

  • I’m just hoping one of two things 1) neither if these pilots gets picked up and they both stay on southland or 2) something happens to both their characters and they end up having to leave the force with the way Sherman has been acting I have a feeling he is going to screw up and it will bring Sammy down either physically or emotionally I just hope southland gets picked up for another season it’s a great show that is not afraid to get dark and dirty more real life than any other cop show I agree with @chicagodan new faces could be a good idea

    • Both of these pilots are in second position to Southland. That means if it gets renewed for a 6th season, the pilots would probably have to recast their roles if they get picked up to series. Like on New Girl… Coach was only in the pilot & replaced with Winston, because Damon Wayans, Jr.’s show Happy Endings was renewed.

I would hate to see Southland go, but I’m just glad it lasted as long as it did after NBC gave it the boot.

  • I’m sure the fact that there’s so much on right now during the Wednesday 10PM time slot cant be helping Southland’s rating that much. You have Psych, The Americans, and Southland all vying for an audience at 10, and yes, even my guilty pleasure—”Workaholics”.

  • Sad news, but I’m glad to see everyone waking up to how wonderful Hatosy is…I’ve been a fan of his for years and years, and he (along with Cudlitz) is one of the best actors on Southland. I will really miss this cast.

  • Bummer. Southland is one of the few good dramas on the alternative networks!
