Saturday Night Live: Your 25 Dream Host Picks!

To say that Season 38 of Saturday Night Live has been a little lackluster would be like calling the Kardashian clan a wee bit overexposed. And while it wouldn’t be fair to place the sketch-comedy show’s woes on the shoulders of its guest hosts, the most recent string of emcees — Adam Levine, Justin Bieber, Christoph Waltz and Kevin Hart — haven’t exactly upgraded the tired lines that showed up on their cue cards.

Which got us thinking: Back in September, TVLine brainstormed a list of 15 first-time hosts we were dying to see. You responded with hundreds of fantastic suggestions of your own. And since Lorne Michaels & Co. seem to need all the help they can get, we picked your best ideas — none of whom have hosted before — and compiled ’em in a handy gallery.

So click through the photos below, then hit the comments with your thoughts on who you’d like to see follow Justin Timberlake’s stint this coming Saturday (11:30/10:30c, NBC)!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  4. Luigi says:

    Darren Criss!!!!!!!!!

  5. I think the real issue is the writing, not the hosts. When it comes down to it, you can only do so much with what you’re given. And even the greatest thespians and comedians can only elevate crap so far.

  6. Eric says:

Nathan Fillion, Donald Glover, Max Greenfield, Jensen Ackles. Craig Ferguson… a lot of great ideas in here! Could I add Damon Wayans Jr. from Happy Endings to the list of suggestions?

  7. veronica says:

    • Leah says:

Oh, wow. I actually hadn’t thought of that. I think she would be great too! I know she’s seeing an upswing in popularity lately, but she deserves so much more than she’s getting!

  18. Crittab says:

I wont matter who hosts if the writing continues to be awful. Even people who are naturally hilarious can only do so much with that crap.

  19. Darren Criss as both host and musical guest! He’s amazing :)

  20. Polly says:

Who in the GD hell is this Darren Criss person and who is responsible for sending his voting block here???

  21. I saw a comment suggesting that all of the comments about adding Darren Criss to the list appear to be from generic girl names and are all coming from the same ip address. I can assure you that they are not. The people that have replied to this post are aware of the talent that Darren Criss, and the maximum potential he could have as a host of Saturday Night Live. Darren has been a part of SNL style shows both in college and recently as a part of the Young Screenwriters convention. He has hosting experience as he hosted last year’s awards, an honor he received because of his amazing 3 week stint in How to Succeed in Business that sold out every night. He and his friends have written many musicals that fall in line with the humor of SNL with themes such as Harry Potter, bugs in space, and even penises. As far as him being a musical guest, he has been a key performer for many events, including 2 for President Obama. He is also going to be playing the love interest of former SNL cast member, Kristen Wiig, in the upcoming film “Girl Most Likely.” Look at all these reasons…and i haven’t once mentioned Glee. And back to all those names…those are fans. Fans that would drive up SNL’s ratings through the roof. These are the fans that will fly around the world and sleep in the snow for 2 days just for a chance to see him perform live. It would be a shame for SNL not to grab him up.

    • Freddie says:

      1) Most of the cast took part in the Young Storyteller’s Foundation event. Darren wasn’t even a standout in that small group. His delivery was stilted and boring.

      2) “And back to all those names…those are fans. Fans that would drive up SNL’s ratings through the roof.” Those fans can’t even get Glee’s ratings to stop falling and you’ll think they’ll boost SNL’s, as if SNL needed a boost? Dream big.

  22. Lisa says:

Darren Criss! He’d be the most hilarious, least awkward, most fun host ever. He’s been a great host before and would be outstanding!

    • Lisa says:

By great host before, I meant for an award show, not for SNL. Darren’s written things that are very SNL-like with his parody musicals he and his friends do that are extremely popular. He has a large, dedicated fan base who would all tune in to watch if he hosted. He does so much more than just Glee and has a fantastic sense of humor. He was even offered a job hosting the X Factor some time back, which shows people recognize him as a respectable figure.

  24. teresa92 says:

Blaine Anderson or Darren Criss. It would be great if they could attend both. Indeed, I think we could settle with one of them! ;)

  25. Darren Criss! (Darren Criss) #darrencriss

  26. Ben says:

CAROL BURNETT, Dulé Hill/James Roday, Rebel Wilson, Donald Glover, Mindy Kaling, Stephen Colbert, Nick Offerman, and Max Greenfield are my top picks from this list.

  27. Vicki Willard says:

Darren Criss please! Has performed live before and will be charming and amazing!

  28. Bree says:

    Darren Criss from Glee.

  29. Faster says:

Whaat? This list just seemed to be a random list of celebrities that people like. Only a handful were known for their comedic talent, which at least used to be what was preferred in an SNL host (although admittedly it does not seem to be that way anymore). As to all the people naming Darren Criss – maybe I’m alone, but I have no idea who that is, so it doesn’t matter how many people spam these boards with his name, what matters is how many mainstream people will tune in to watch an SNL episode with that person in it. Anyway, of that terrible list, my vote would hands down go to Nick Offerman.

  30. Ben says:

The entire cast of Happy Endings! Yes, I know Casey Wilson is a former SNL cast member.

  31. susan hess says:

  36. Rachel says:

Darren Criss as host and musical guest!!!! <3 (and have the rest of Starkid show up too maybe?) :)

  37. Britta Unfiltered says:

Donald Glover would be fantastic. So would Rebel Wilson.

  38. Sarah says:

patrick dempsey or ellen pompeo. either would be fantastic.

  39. HoneyBee says:

I saw on Tumblr how the Darren Criss fans would spam this post and I see they have. NO THANKS!!!

    • Faster says:

That’s clearly what is happening here! I doubt an article about SNL has ever gotten 4+ pages of comments before tonight. Pretty bummed that tweens have invaded this site in such ridiculous numbers.

      • You are correct in that there are posts on Tumblr asking fans to come here and tell of our love for Darren Criss. Multiple groups have been in a campaign for more than a year to have Darren Criss host SNL, and most recently, his street team has been charged with the task. We unashamedly look out for opportunities to share our ideas with the world, especially on public forums were we are encouraged to share who we’d like to see host. You may call it spam, but we call it dedication. We know that hosting is something Darren desires to do, and we will continue until we see it come to fruition.

  42. Sarah A. says:

    #1 Nathan Fillion
    #2 Michael Weatherly
    #3 Max Greenfield

They would be amazing on SNL!!

  43. Laura says:

    Darren Criss!!!!!

  44. Katie Keim says:

You guys have an amazing list gathered already, but at the top of it definitely needs to be DARREN CRISS! I mean, the guy went from an internet sensation to an overnight superstar… what more credentials do you need?!?

  45. siska says:

I would love to see Nathan hosting the show. He’s great, freaking hillarious and ruggedly handsome of course.

  46. Lvar12 says:

Obviously weren’t thinking with the choices of Levine and Beiber. The seasons have been struggling anyways why not switch it up and treat it like Second City and then have cameos instead of one host for the show. I’m also surprised at the fact that since most NBC shows are struggling why they haven’t tried showcasing Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Daniel Pudi, or Donald Glover. Anna Kendrick would be good as well. It doesn’t matter though if the writing isn’t up to par

  47. jo says:

    Darren Ciss!

  48. Alyssa says:

DARREN CRISS PLEASE! He’s a fantastic actor who does amazing comedy, just look at his past works :) Also he would be an amazing musical guest too considering his voice is like heaven :p

  49. Brandon says:

I agree one trillion percent…would be too funny

  50. Quvenzhané Wallis!
