Game of Thrones Hot Shots: Shadowy Posters Hint at a Dark Season Ahead

In Game of Thrones, it can be difficult to tell who’s good and who’s evil — and this recently released art doesn’t make it any easier.

This gallery features your favorite returning characters’ faces bathed in light and shadow.  Tyrion, Cersei, Jaime, Sansa, Arya — they’re all here, but not a one of them looks pleased about what’s to come when the HBO drama returns on March 31 (9/8c).

Flip through the gallery, then hit the comments: What do you think the light/dark motif could mean (and is there any significance to which side of the face is illuminated)?

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

So excited for Jaime’s story this season!

Oh Game of Thrones… You know a way to a woman’s heart. Us book readers know what lays ahead… And you’re right about darkness. Lots of dark paths will be paved, and lots & lots of blood shed.

I don’t think the shading really means anything. Right side good, left side evil… Joffrey has his shading on the Right, clearly he doesn’t have an ounce of good in him at all. So IMO, it’s just whatever side worked best with the actor’s faces to contour their face.

I don’t think she meant there was some sort of code or anything. I think Kimberly was simply refering to the fact that it’s half and half. Part dark and part light. In other words, not all evil and not all good.

Although, you are correct that some of these character are pretty much all evil.

      • Jess says:

“and is there any significance to which side of the face is illuminated” I think that’s what Harley was commenting on.

I agree with you both though, GRRM’s characters are not all Black and White. It’s going to be a HUGE season this year.

  4. Amiee says:

No, I’m pretty sure Joffrey is %100 evil. It isn’t difficult determing that.

    • Harley Quinn says:

Yeah, he’s 100% evil… Most characters have a lot of Grey area Joffrey is completely Black & White. There is no good side to him.

I’m mostly excited to see Jaime this season, a lot of people who pegged him as evil, will see a completely new light shine upon him. He’s definitely my favorite character.

I’m trying to get psyched up, but knowing that the author probably won’t finish the series (and let’s face it the books have had a sharp decline in quality) and that he has said he’s completely against anyone completing his work, makes it a bit hard to get reinvested in the series. Maybe watching the series again, will help.

    • Thari says:

You should check out Winter is Coming, they had a great post about this very subject a couple days ago. Basically, if George finishes A Dream of Spring in spring 2019, the show won’t catch up, and they both end in the same couple of months. The article goes over a number of possibilities. It was really reassuring to me.

    • Faster says:

GRRM dies and doesn’t finish the series? Worst cliffhanger EVER

  8. Trickster says:

Why don’t they look like the actual characters in the TV show? Sandor and Arya are the only ones that don’t look different in some significant way. The Jon Snow one is so different it’s hard to be sure whether it’s supposed to be Jon or Robb.

Oh, and Moobear, I strongly disagree about the decline in quality. I suspect you’re just disappointed because you didn’t like seeing new characters take the space of those you wanted to see more of. It’s still top-notch stuff.

    • moobear says:

Meh, things use to happen, Martin use to forward the storyline, now he just adds new characters and have most of the other characters repeating the same movements, see Daenerys and now he’s also has done away with consequences, see the wedding.

Because the first seasons were so light and bubbly….

  10. OMED-Josh says:

Come now, Sansa is nobody’s favorite character.
