The project, from Friends producer Dana Klein, revolves around a group of 30something pals who each think the other has it better. Aaron Kaplan joins Klein as an EP on the multi-cam project.

The man formerly known as Dawson will play Will, a gynecologist whose outlook on life becomes decidedly bleaker after his wife’s infidelity leads to their imminent divorce.

Van Der Beek played a heightened, narcissistic version of himself in ABC’s unofficially cancelled Don’t Trust the B—-In addition to Dawson’s Creek, he’s appeared in One Tree HillMercy, and Law & Order: SVU. He also recently reprised his role of Robin Sparkles’ boyfriend Simon on How I Met Your Mother.

  1. Tran says:

Question: Did ABC already canceled Apt. 23 or is it still on after it got yanked from the schedule?

  2. LaurenMC says:

    Good luck JVDB!

  3. DJ Doena says:

I’ve never actually watched Dawson, but I really liked the self-irony he portrayed both in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Apt. 23

  4. Kristina says:

That’s great! He was hilarious on Apt 23. Glad to hear he and Krysten Ritter both have pilots, hope they find shows that will keep them around for a while!

  5. Rivera says:

whose outlook on life becomes decidedly bleaker after his wife’s infidelity leads to their imminent divorce – Not sure if we are talking about this new character or ROSS GELLAR! :P

  6. Kelly says:

He was so great on “Don’t Trust the B—!” Fingers crossed for him that this gets picked up!

  7. John says:

    Wait – Apt 23 wasn’t a reality series?

    • BTM says:

Nope. Scripted comedy. He was one of the main cast, but the leads were two female apartment-mates in NYC. James played the role of “James,” who was the best friend of one of the girls.

The real JVDB is married with at least one child. This version was a hilariously shallow party boy whose attempts to rejuvenate his career always backfired and sent him further down the list of B-level has-beens. Not a bad guy at all, and he truly loved his friends. Just … shallow.

  8. Eliza says:

I thought he was excellent on “Don’t Trust the B-“….Have a new found appreciation for him :)

  9. Nero theTVFiddler says:

So far so good – yes, an early cancellation of B Apt 23 which was sad news, but an opportunity for cast to land pilots in Feb/March. Now, both Krysten (Assistance/ABC) and JVDB have landed pilot. O-oookay – now, maybe a pilot for Dreama? Come on FOX – maybe ‘To My Assistant’ or ‘2 Wrongs’?

  10. Anna says:

Why doesn’t he just play himself again, he’d fit in the project just as well! I love James van der Beek playing James van der Beek!

  11. Erin says:

As glad as I am that he’s landed on his feet, I don’t think anything can top his Apt. 23 character. He was by far the greatest thing about that show. I’m gonna miss vapid, crazy, Dean Cain-hating JVDB.

  12. tara17 says:

Loved him in Apt. 23, will check out the new series.
