Castle Exclusive: Mad Men's Cara Buono Cast as Woman From [Spoiler]'s Past

Castle Season 5 Spoilers: Cara BuonoSomeone is due for a blast from the past when Cara Buono serves up trouble — or at least Irish whiskey — on Castle.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Buono — who memorably played Mad Men‘s formidable Faye Miller aka she who should have been Don Draper’s second wife — will guest-star in a March episode of the ABC drama as Siobhan O’Doul, a(n obviously) beautiful bar owner who has found herself in too deep with the Staten Island Mafia.

But here’s the juicy part: When a murder case involving the Irish mob leads Beckett & Co. to Siobhan, we will discover that she shares a mysterious past with… Detective Ryan (played by Seamus Dever), who is now very married and angling to make a baby with wife Jenny.

Since her well-received Mad Men run, Buono has guested on shows such as Hawaii Five-0 and A Gifted Man, and appeared in the well-watched Lifetime telepic Drew Peterson: Untouchable.

  • Another Firefly reuinion had been too good to be true. But one can always hope that Christina Hendricks one day will be on the show.

    • I’m telling you, it would be ratings GOLD if they had a true reunion show on Castle. Write an episode which includes everyone from Firefly. Ratings through the roof that week. Come on. Do It!

      • It would be… but I’m enjoying the reunions occasional and non-overpowering so that Castle can stay Castle.

I loved the Valentine’s day episode but was a little disappointed that there weren’t any real scenes between Gina and Nathan like there were in Headhunters with him and Adam Baldwin. Those two had incredible chemistry (*non-sexual) on Firefly. They also missed an opportunity by not casting Morena Baccarin as Sophia Turner in last year’s two-parter. Jennifer Beals was great, but Morena’s chemistry w/ Nathan (sexual) is sizzling hot.

I think part of the problem is that Firefly alums are mostly bigger names now (ie more expensive) than you can get away with casting every week. Can you imagine the budget to cast Summer Glau? Or Ron Glass? Or Morena? Getting an Adam Baldwin/Dana Delaney/Jennifer Beals/James Brolin-level actor is a sometimes treat, to be heavily hyped.

Gina Torres is an exception because she dropped out of acting for such a long time to raise a family, but they were lucky to catch her when they did– her star is rising fast. Sean Maher is in a similar boat. Jewel Staite and Alan Tudyk are in-between, and I’d love to see them.

BTW, Adam Baldwin and Gina Torres aren’t the first Firefly actors to appear opposite Nathan Fillion. Several guest actors from Firefly have been on Castle.

      • Hey, one great former Firefly guy who was on Castle… Jose Molina. He was the script editor and wrote a few episodes in Season 2 (my all-time favorite season). He was a writer for Firefly as well. Brilliant writer, and was the master of that jazzy feel that made the dialog in those early seasons so great.

      • Such an episode would cost a small fortune to produce, though.

  • Hopefully this Ryan-centric won’t be as boring as Esposito’s!

    • The Esposito episodes werem’t boring at all except to hard core Caskette shippers who want the focus to be on Rick and Kate all the time. I’d be happy to see more Martha, Alexis and Lannie backstory. Heck, Ryan’s story was hysterical this week. And Esplannie is heating up finally.

      • Agree to disagree, IMHO the cases in the Esposito eps were boring and the second ep made me really dislike his character. The writer’s seemed to think turning him into some juvenile “playa” would be attractive and likeable whereas I just found it to be off putting.

      • I agree. There’s a fan contingent who insist that the whole show be all-caskett, all the time. They used to demand that the two get together (and Marlowe made a daring move and actually did it!) Then they complained that there weren’t enough romantic moments between the two. And now that there have been, they want sex scenes. Rest assured, even if there was a bedroom scene, they’d get angry and want more.

The first Esposito episode was excellent. Secret Santa really made me happy. It was well-handled and well-written, and developed the character. The second episode was ok, but a little weaker. You KNEW that espo would adopt the kid pretty much from the get-go, and they played the cliches very, very hard. Esposito threatening the gangster was great– very well handled. I liked that he’s one of the very, very few killers (accessory after the fact, I know) to get away with it in the series.

Obviously, they’ll be playing the “Alexis is in trouble” card next week. They had to do that eventually, and kudos to Andrew Marlowe for holding off this long to do it. This being the plot of Taken, I demand that at least one neck be punched by Castle as a homage.

I’d love to hear more about her and Max. Is it just me, or have they never used a pronoun for Alexis’s love interest? If it’s a Maxine, I’ll be very impressed. Not as a political high horse or fan service, but simply because they’ve been subtly playing the “Alexis finding herself” plot for a long time, and Castle reacting to the experimentation, which he no doubt supports in theory but will still be surprised by, will be fun. Also, it’s foreshadowed in season 3: she brought “Ashley” home to meet her dad, only for Castle to discover that Ashley was her boyfriend.

On the other hand, Molly Quinn hinted that Alexis would be dating her professor last summer. If that the case, then it would be a much darker turn for Castle. It’s an improper relationship that could really hurt Alexis personally and academically. But she’s a grown woman now, and insist that her dad support her. You’d have some melodrama of Beckett helping Castle as he helplessly watches his daughter throw away her hard-fought academic success for a man who’s (whether he realizes it or not) exploiting her.

  • Oh for heavens’s sake just stop with the firefly crap. We Castle fans watch the show for Castle and Beckett! NOT because of a dead show that was cancelled 10 years ago so move ON & STFU! And oh it’ll be nice to see Cara in Castle.
