What to Watch Tuesday: Smash Is Back, NCIS Attacks a Hacker, Emily Owens Exits and More

Smash - Season 2On TV this Tuesday: Smash cuts, prints and moves on with its second season; NCIS gets a major cyber lead; Yes, Dear, there’s a fun reunion on Raising Hope; and Betty White turns 90… again. Here are 10 programs to keep on your radar.

8 pm Betty White’s 2nd Annual 90th Birthday Special (NBC) | Bill Cosby, Whoopi Goldberg, Will & Grace‘s Sean Hayes and a bunch more stars are on hand to help the Golden girl celebrate that which is otherwise known as her 91st birthday.

8 pm Raising Hope (Fox) | Yes, Dear alumni Brian Doyle-Murray, Mike O’Malley and Liza Synder guest-star in an hour-long episode that finds Hope recruited as an actress on Yo Zappa Do and Burt and Virginia searching for a personal (and incriminating) home video.

8 pm Pioneers of Television (PBS) | Season finale: Get behind-the-scenes details on some of TV’s biggest miniseries, including Rich Man, Poor Man, Roots and The Thorn Birds.

8 pm NCIS (CBS) | The team takes on a hacker who could help track down the most-wanted cyber terrorist in the world. Greg Germann returns as Deputy Director Craig, and Vik Sahay (Chuck) guest-stars.

PREVIEW | The Lying Game First Look: Emma Inches Closer to Uncovering Rebecca’s Big Mama Secret

9 pm Smash (NBC) | Two-hour Season 2 premiere: Bombshell‘s run in Boston was a success, so now it’s time for Eileen, Julia, Tom, Derek and the crew to begin the transition to Broadway. Meanwhile, Karen meets a new mentor (played by Dreamgirls‘ Jennifer Hudson) and discovers new talent in an unexpected place, and Ivy wonders whether she has a future with the show. (Read fresh preview, watch a video sneak peek and a musical interlude and get lotsa scoop.)

9 pm The Bachelor (ABC) | ABC “happened” to wind up with a “spare” two-hour episode this season, so here it is, shamelessly aiming to empty some seats at the Smash premiere.

9 pm Emily Owens, M.D. (The CW) | Series finale: Emily decides to proceed with a relationship with Micah, but Will doesn’t like it. (Yep, cancelled.)

9 pm New Girl (Fox) | After last week’s sizzling kiss, Nick and Jess are put in a compromising position in front of Sam.

10 pm White Collar (USA Network) | Peter and Neal work a forgery/money-laundering case that leads them into two of the most iconic New York institutions. (Hmm… could that be what creator Jeff Eastin refers to in this preview?)

10 pm Tosh.0 (Comedy Central) | Season 5 premiere: All of the cringeworthy video you could possibly stuff into a half-hour is back.

  • So sad that this is the last ep of Emily. The show really has soul. But what can we do! Hope for the cast to come back in a different show! :D

  • So incredibly bummed about E.O. being cancelled, but hopefully E.O. sticks with Micah and leaves that no good Will alone!!! Who would have EVER thought I would be rooting AGAINST Justin Hartley!?!?!? But I mean come on Will is no Fox Crane!!! ;)

    • Are we going to get to see how it ends though!? Or will this be like a normal episode and leave on a cliffhanger? Did they have enough notice to wrap the show up by tonight’s epi? I’m so bummed this show was cancelled. Horrible decision.

Comment by Kelly – February 5, 2013 07:44 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • It should be. It’s on in Canada and we air America shows the same week.

        • Primeval New World started their 1st season in Canada in Oct 2012. They started in the UK in Jan 2013. They will be on SyFy in the US sometime later this year but I have not been able to find an exact date. I’ve checked PrimevalNewWorld.com and SyFy.com .

  • I’m also so sad Emily Owens is ending. The way the show was marketed and the previews shown made it look just horrible and unlikable. I almost didn’t even try it, but I did and I found it so refreshing and fun and kind.

Comment by Amy – February 5, 2013 06:55 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • YES. This show has depth, is light, fun, and heartwarming. It’s precious. (No matter what others who didn’t really stick through it say because obviously it didn’t start out to be the best but it has grown episode by episode.) The CW made a mistake on this one. RIP Emily Owens. (Crossing my fingers another network picks it up though. Please please pleaaase.)

Comment by Michelle – February 5, 2013 07:34 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • No one’s picking it up. The CW is where they put things that don’t make the cut for CBS.

  • Heartbroken about Emily Owens MD :(

Comment by Adam – February 5, 2013 06:57 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • same here :( :( :( i personally think networks should air all the piolets they make and let the audiences decide what gets picked up not pick up shows let ppl fall in love with them then cancel and not give them a full season

Comment by MistyB – February 5, 2013 08:52 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • They used to do that. It was called movies of the week. No one does that anymore.

Comment by Jay – February 5, 2013 09:42 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Emily Owens was awful — perhaps the worst show I have ever watched. It was the “Twilight” of TV shows without the ratings. Justin Hartley was wasted in it. He should have done Arrow instead even though he didn’t want to be tied to that character.

Comment by Georgia Madman – February 5, 2013 06:59 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • i like Twilight. hated Emily Owens though. awful!!! i hope Justin Hartley and Michael Rady get spots on shows that are actually good this fall.

      • Give emily owens another try i watched the pilot then stopped for like 5 weeks then did a catch up and just fell in love with this sweet charming show its gotten really good the cw made an epically stupid decision in canceling it

Comment by brooke – February 5, 2013 08:50 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • i gave it 2 episodes and hated it. i always give shows more than one episode before i quit watching. i just hated the main character Emily. which stinks because i liked all the other characters but she was annoying IMO.

Comment by Elyse – February 5, 2013 11:06 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
          • Yet you like Twilight, who has the most annoying, sullen lead whose dour face begs to be punched. Your opinion is invalidated!

Comment by Christian – February 5, 2013 03:45 PM PDT
    • When I saw a preview of the show Emily Owens, as much as a love Justin Hartley, I felt the show didn’t work and wouldn’t succeed. Tried a couple of times later, and just felt it was a loser still. Some shows just don’t have that quality that makes a winning show, and sorry for those who liked it, didn’t feel it worked.

  • They made too early of a dicision on Emily Owens…a horrible timeslot to launch a new comedic drama if you ask me. I will miss it so much, had hoped another network would pick it up or the network would change their minds. As Maki posted above – this show has soul and its hard to find these days.

Comment by jp – February 5, 2013 10:14 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • A million channels is too many (understatement)! If there were fewer channels, they wouldn’t be stretched so thin and there would be better shows every night. Seriously, Dance Moms? Is that a real thing?
