Te’o says he was tricked into believing that his online girlfriend, whom he never met in person, died of leukemia earlier this year. As the Web site Deadspin uncovered last week, that girlfriend never existed.

Couric’s talk with Te’o, who will be accompanied by his parents, will air Thursday on her syndicated talk show Katie. Earlier in the week, ABC will air excerpts of the episode on Good Morning America and other news programs.

An ESPN reporter interviewed Te’o Friday night, but the athlete’s representatives did not want the discussion recorded on camera.

  • Anyone who thinks this guy is telling the truth must not know he’s a Mormon.

    • I agree with Jim. How can a “boyfriend” not go to his “girlfriend”‘s funeral? He would have figured out it was a hoax if he did. Some people are so gullible. You can believe the guy if you want, but things don’t add up.

  • The dudes either a wack job or a closet case. Let’s be real here, he didn’t want to go to the love of his lifes funeral? Or contact her family or anyone when she died? And he’s been quoted as saying that he met her before. And uploaded pictures of a meal she supposedly made for him. He’s in on it, the question is does notre dame really believe him or are they covering it up?

    • He’s not gay, there is no such thing in Samoan culture, he just loves his “fa’afafine” and is too far under the spell of his bigoted religion to come clean.

He is going to break like Ryan Leaf did if he makes it to the big leagues.

      • Hahaha! That’s as absurd as when Mahmood Ahmadinejad said there are no gay people in Iran! It’s amazing what some people will make themselves believe.

  • Full court press on the cover up. Not only did he keep talking about her after she “died”, but he was so in lover with her that multiple teammates say he was seeing other girls on campus. I think this was some plot hatched up to give him a “story” for the Heisman and no one ever thought anyone would bother to verify it. If anything, the people at Notre Dame should have vetted the story.

  • The promos for this show him crying a lot. What I’m most curious about is how his parents are going to explain away their involvement in the hoax. Setting my DVR for this … can’t … look … away…
