Supernatural Sneak Peek: Sam and Dean Meet Grandpa Winchester in 'Surprising' Mythology Ep

Supernatural goes time-tripping again when Dean and Sam’s paternal grandpa Henry (guest star Gil McKinney) travels from the past to present day, and we’ve got your first look at the three Winchesters meeting up in the Jan. 30 episode (The CW, 9/8c).

Henry comes to seek his son John’s help with a demon, which sparks some strong feelings in Sam and Dean.

“Of course, when you meet your father’s father, that brings up some of your father issues,” executive producer Jeremy Carver previously told TVLine. “In other words, what did your father’s father have to do with the way your father turned out? A lot of that is explored head-on.”

The show gave viewers a peek at Mary’s clan in Season 4’s “In the Beginning;” the upcoming episode will delve into the backstory of the Winchester lineage.

“It’s really fun and really emotional,” continued Carver. “It’s one of our family mythology episodes. When we get a chance to do one of these, we try to do it with great care because we’re essentially notching a part of the mythology into the stone, as it were. So we want to be careful with it. We want to make sure it fits all very nicely and also, frankly, in surprising ways that we didn’t realize. We’re very happy with it.”

So… It turns out that John Winchester’s father was a Hunter, too? Apparently John was raised in total ignorance of this minor little detail. That makes it one heckuva coincidence that John married into a legendary Hunter family. Then again, it’s the Winchester line, not the Campbell line, that the angels have always been interested in. I can’t wait to see the looks on Sam and Dean’s faces when they meet dear ol’ Gramps.

      Exactly what I was thinking.

    • Alan says:

i guess he did exactly what mary did and put the hunting life behind him when he started a family. i dont see why people are making a big deal out of this, we’ve seen it before with this very family

      • Lyndsey says:

Nope, you’re forgetting the episode when Sam & Dean went back to save their parents from the angels. John was completely stunned by Mary’s family history as well as the concept of hunting monsters, demons, etc. Now that’s not to say his dad couldn’t have been a hunter too, but if he was then John wasn’t aware of it. It’s definitely odd given what we know of John BUT the show has also never once discussed his family or family history so it’s not a continuity issue or retcon. And as someone said earlier, the point was made that Dean’s ability to be a vessel for Michael had been inherited from the Winchester line, not the Campbell’s so this could lead to an explanation as to why. Regardless, I’m really looking forward to it. The boys have been too lonely this season.

        • Alan says:

you’re disagreeing with me but then it seems like you are backing up what i said, im confused

          • Lyndsey says:

Wait, are you saying that John’s DAD put hunting behind him before John was born? Because it sounded like you were saying John had done that which would contradict what we know about him.

But look further down, I think a better explanation has been found anyway.

          • Alan says:

yes i was saying john’s dad did the same thing as mary, i thought i made that clear. my bad

          • Lyndsey says:

Ah…then I apologize. However I am starting to lean towards the theory below that Papa Winchester just found himself in a supernatural situation and came seeking his son’s help after learning John became a hunter.

        • mike says:

yes i was thinking the same thing??

        • Amanda says:

I agree with what you said below after reading the article I never got the impression that Grampa Winchester was a hunter. From what we know about John there has been no indication that John was born in to the hunting life style like Mary was. It seems like Grampa Winchester is seeking help from the boys because he doesn’t know what to do.

    • Altair says:

I always thought that the Winchester and Campbell lines had to be (re)united to create the perfect vessels and the Campbell line belonged to Lucifer.

  2. Dee says:

    Another Winchester hottie!

It seems a little too contrived that he is also a hunter and John knew nothing about it, though.

    Can’t wait.

  3. ollie says:

so they are completely ignoring the fact that john wasnt a hunter till after mary died. or as suggested above he didnt know about his father being a hunter.

    • Alan says:

mary gave up hunting when she started a family, so did papa winchester; not that hard to rationalise away

      • Melynda says:

If this is true, why is he trying to find John in order to get his help with a demon? And wouldn’t time traveling dad showing up on your front step be a surprise for someone ignorant of the supernatural?

    • From what I remember reading on a previous article about this episode, John’s father isn’t necessarily a hunter. He just gets mixed up with something supernatural, like a magical cult or something.

      • Lyndsey says:

Which could make sense. After all, hunters aren’t the only ones who encounter the supernatural on the show. It would also make sense why he would have been searching for John in the future. If Papa Winchester was indeed a hunter then he most likely wouldn’t be going to such extreme measures for help with the problem. Whoever, or whatever, helped him time jump was likely how he found out his son was a hunter and able to handle such situations.

        • shelleysmiles says:

Wait, so the “someone” knows John turns into a hunter in the future but not that he is dead? Why the limited knowledge?

  4. Drew says:

So, he lures Flo out onto that rainy road, making her think that this is an insurance emergency… Then Sam and Dean jump out of the bushes and gank her?

I have to admit, I always suspected that she was a demon.

  5. Carrie says:

Wow, I’m excited about this episode. He’s reading John’s journal! I was just thinking that we haven’t seen that journal in a while. Anyway, it’s weird how that actor resembles the rest of the Winchesters. He really looks like a combo of Sam, Dean and the younger John.

  6. Kat says:

This ep looks great! I can’t wait till SPN returns!

  7. crystal says:

thats so awesome!! Gil is from my hometown of Angleton, TX.

Gotta love them Texas Men :)

  8. Mikael says:

John’s father could have hidden him from the supernatural, which could be why John didn’t know about hunting until he met Mary and her family. Maybe the Winchesters came from a long line of hunters and John’s father wanted him to have a normal life, but in the end he was destined to become a hunter.

  9. Kyle says:

I hope Henry appears in more than one episode, his character sounds interesting and promising.

  10. Dee H says:

This episode was all kinds of awesome. A lot of people complained about the LARPing ep and wanting to get back to the season’s storyline… but this went back all the way to the core mythology of the SPN universe.
