What's New on TV? Your Guide to The Following, Cult, The Americans and 15 Other Shows

What can the small screen interest you in, come 2013? How about Kevin Bacon as an elite, vodka-nipping FBI profiler on Fox’s The Following? Maybe a teenage, acid-washed jeans-wearing Carrie Bradshaw? And hey, there’s simply no resisting Felicity (aka Keri Russell) as an undercover KGB agent in Reagan-era America.

  1. Adam Bramble says:

I shall watch the Carrie Diaries only b/c of Freema Agyeman aka MARTHA JONES xD.
The Following, and Cult seem sweet.

  2. James R. says:

The Following, The Americans, and Continuum are the ones I will definitely watch. Do No Harm, Banshee, Golden Boy, and the TNT shows are maybes.

  3. Adam Bramble says:

    Oh and CONTINUUM is amazing!!!
I wanna see Banshee too :D

  4. Tim says:

    The Following/Continuum look good.

    A few look decent.

A few have plots that make me wonder how it’s a TV show

  5. James says:

Everybody, let’s sing “Ooh di oh ooh rudi ooh. Ooh ri dooh ah! Ooh rhee doo ah do we ro oo ee-rah!”

  6. jlhabitan says:

By the way Matt. Is it possible if we comment without having the need to access our WordPress accounts if it’s only our email addresses that’a required for us to post our comments? It’s a bit of hassle. Thanks! :D

  7. Sarah says:

I saw The Following pilot twice at Comic Con and it somehow was just as good on a second viewing. I am so excited for this show to finally be out there in the world and I can’t wait for the second episode since I’ve been waiting for months already!

  8. Captain Obvious says:

The Following, Monday Mornings and Zero Hour for me. Oh Anthony Edwards, how I missed ye.

  9. Brian says:

The Following, Golden Boy and Zero Hour.

  10. Ken says:

The Following sounds as gruesome as Dexter, so I may check out Cult instead since it has some of the same behind-the-scenes hands that created the Scream franchise. 1600 Penn looks awful, and the promos for Zero Hour (a show I’d normally be drawn to) look to be trying too hard to convince you that a conspiracy theory is by itself compelling, without really explaining anything about the conspiracy – unlike the Cult’s promos. Among the rest, Do No Harm looks promising and I may give Golden Boy a chance.

  11. Candy says:

I’ll be watching The Americans, Banshee, The Carrie Diaries, Cult, Deception (saw the pilot on NBC.com), The Following, Monday Mornings and Masters of Sex (missing from this list). Ripper Street, Do No Harm and Golden Boy look atrociously boring. Red Widow and Zero Hour look like messes but I can always check it out on Hulu Plus if either of them get decent ratings and feedback. How To Live With Your Parents looks cute but I’m sick of comedies so who knows.

    • Jason says:

When I first heard there was going to be a show called Masters of Sex a while back, my first thought was that it would be a scripted drama set in the BDSM lifestyle, then I read what it was about and was somewhat disappointed, I will however still give it a watch.

  12. My Opinion says:

Looking forward to Monday Mornings. David E Kelley always entertains. On the other hand, you can’t pay me to watch anything, Master of Arrogance, Greg Yaitanes is involved in.

  13. Andy says:

The Americans, The Carrie Diaries, Cult.Deception (For Garber and it’s Revenge sounding way), Do No Harm (Because I was one of the 17 that watched My Own Worst Enemy), The Following (Kevin Bacon and Shawn Ashmore!), Golden Boy (Chi McBride), and Zero Hour.

    • Deena says:

I watched My Own Worst Enemy too! I knew there were others out there. I was planning to watch Do No Harm anyway since I am a Steven Pasquale fan and as soon as I saw the preview it reminded me of Christian Slater’s show. I really hope it’s good.

  14. Mick says:

So Golden Boy is similar to Jack and Bobby?

  15. B says:

    Family Tools…cancelled in 3…2…1…

  16. Josh says:

    Deception The Following

  17. Hmm says:

Dont understand why Continuum is on this list when it’s been out for an entire season already. I could only get through about 3 episodes, it was boring as heck.

Will be checking out Following and Cult. Tentatively Do No Harm and Monday Mornings.

Here’s hoping Cult lasts a good long time, so CW will continue down this darker path it’s been playing at recently.

  18. erin says:

Americans, do yourself a favor and watch Continuum. It was the best new show of the summer and I’m sorry you’ve had to wait so long for it. Erik Knudsen, who plays Alec, is wonderful and I love Rachel Nichols, but Kellog (played by Stephen Lobo) is the real scene-stealer. Incredible show, cannot wait for season 2 this summer.

    • Alan says:

kellog and kagame are the two highlights of the series, they managed to create really complex characters with the limited amount of time afforded to them as part of an ensemble. i really hope the second season gives more time to lexa doig since i cant even remember her characters name

  19. Continuum is amazing!!! watched it over the summer i was hooked!!!

    • Annika says:

It’s really good, smart and action packed! I love how it makes you question your perception as it goes along and reveals new information.

    • Quinn Mallory says:

I agree 100%. I actually didn’t have that high of an expectation going in, but it quickly got me hooked and both raised and met my expectation as the season progressed. I wouldn’t quite put it in the BSG category…yet, but it got the potential to get there. Rachel Nichols’ acting has greatly improved since her Alias day…plus, she’ve always looked great.

  20. lydiakj says:

Are they ever going to set a premiere date for Hannibal?

    • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

Last we heard, maybe May, maybe summer. In part depends on whether NBC has any earlier-than-anticipated vacancies.

  21. Quantum says:

I’ll be watching Cult, Banshee, The Following, and Monday Mornings for sure when they premiere. Saw the Deception pilot, I may watch episode two but it comes off as a lower quality version of Revenge, which I stopped watching a long time ago. The Americans — I’ll check it out — though I have a feeling it’s not going to stick around for the long haul. Buzz seems to be nill on it.

  22. James says:

The Americans, The Following, Banshee, and Zero Hour look pretty good, maybe do no harm, and Golden Boy. Didn’t see Davinci’s Demons from STARZ pretty sure it premieres in early spring, from the trailer it looks amazing.

  23. meah says:

The Following, the carrie diaries, deception(love the pilot) are for sure..would check out banshee, red widow, cult,do no harm..pls everyone checkout DECEPTION.

  24. greysfan says:

Continuum is amazing. Saw this when it premiered earlier in the year. I can’t wait to see the 2nd season. :)

Others i look forward to include The Americans, Deception, Red Widow and Zero Hour.

  25. Anne says:

I guess tvline doesn’t want mobile users visiting their site since most of the articles lately are incompatible slide shows.

  26. Leo says:

Banshee and Golden Boy are the two new series I’m so looking forward to be obsessed.
The Following on the other hand, I’m not really keen on the leading man, but judging by how overrated everyone’s been about the show, I will check it out as well.

  27. Pepper says:

I saw a sort-of movie like Cult before. It was called: ABED. All caps.

  28. Anna says:

Actually pretty excited to check out The Americans.
Also, Elizabeth Perkins is not old enough to play Sarah Chalke’s mother.

  29. cas says:

I love Victor Garber so I will most likely tune in for Deception and of course The Following.

  30. Karoline Marie says:

So as a Dane I have one tiny objection. Penoza is definitly not a danish television show – it’s very much from the Netherland and therefore dutch!

  31. Jared says:

Really looking forward to CULT..The Following..Deception and possibly The Carrie Diaries.

  32. Templar says:

1600 Penn because I like Elfman and Pullman
    The Following for Kevin Bacon
Golden Boy for Theo James and Chi McBride
Ripper Street cause it’s Victorian and on Saturday
    Zero Hour maybe
    No to the rest.

  33. Brandy says:

Really looking forward to Carrie Diaries & that’s it of the new Midseason shows.

  34. ABC says:

No early reviews for The Americans???????

  35. Alan says:

continuum is really good, hopefully the first season takes off in america. ive heard some complaints that it is “liberalist propaganda” but that is a load of crap, anyone who actually watches the show will see that it is fair to all sides in its central conflict.
banshee has me intrigued based on that premise so i will definitely be checking that out.
cult is one i may check out later when i can watch multiple episodes in a row to really get a feel for it.
how i met my job is going to be a miss, the procedural market is too crowded without another getting thrown in; as is 1600 penn, sounds like they dont use the comedy potential of a show set in the white house.
the following has a good premise but it sounds like the premise isnt one that can be sustained for any amount of time.
the only upcoming show which has really grabbed my attention is hanibal but who knows when that will air

  36. Renee says:

I LOVED Rush! TVLine any influence you might exert to get it released on DVD in the US would be greatly appreciated. Cause buying the DVD’s in Australia, shipping to US and getting a region free DVD player is just beyond my $$ at this time. Please?

  37. Isa Burd says:

What about Ray Donovan??!?! I cannot ait for that – love me some Liev Schreiber!

  38. Renee says:

    The Americans – Maybe.
Banshee – If I had Cinemax definitely. Will watch on Netflix.
Carrie Diaries – You couldn’t pay me.
Continuum – I watched the first episode online and will definitely watch.
Do No Harm – Maybe. I did watch My Own Worst Enemy.
Following – Done with Fox. Might check out on Netflix.
    Zero Hour – Definitely.

  39. Nathan says:

Looks like Noah Emmerich’s character gets to join the same support group as Deb Morgan and Hank Schrader…the “I’m amazing at my job until its staring me in the face” club.

  40. prish says:

I am REALLY looking forward to Deception, even though there is a reality gap. Someone in the family would not bring her up on a web search and find that she was working at things, through the years that screamed maybe a cop, at least way overqualified for a maid? I can’t get with James Purefoy being the villain, since I loved his acting in many things, so I won’t watch that show. Golden Boy and Family Tools look fun, so I’ll give them a try.

  41. Rachel says:

Thanks for letting us know what Monday Mornings is actually about. I thought it was another ER ripoff, and I had NO idea Jamie Bamber was attached! I’ll tune in now.

  42. Ari says:

Cult better be AMAZING because we lost Alaric for this!

  43. bella says:

Hey Matt, what about syfy’s “Rewind”, haven’t heard anything since april/may. I’m dying to know if the pilot will air/if it will be picked up to series! I love time travel.

    • nick1372 says:

It never got past the pilot stage.

      • bella says:

Thanks nick, so disappointing if true, how did you come across that info? I thought the pilot was a 2-hour movie that might air regardless, but that may have just been hope.

        • Nick1372 says:

The Futon Critic has an database containing every show idea ever put up to a network in the last decade or so.
And if Rewind was to be a 2-hour movie, it would probably have been announced by now, sorry.

  44. Sareeta says:

Banshee: I still need to catch up on Strike Back season 2 and Hunted; Banshee sounds like another good reason to subscribe to Cinemax.

The Americans: spy dramas don’t seem to fare well on TV (*sniff* Rubicon). Hopefully this one will be good since it’s FX.

Continuum: sounds like a cool sci-fi show with an interesting concept

Zero Hour: sounds like a fun mystery; trailer reminded me of Angels and Demons/Da Vinci Code.

Ripper Street: Enjoyed Copper. Hopefully this will be good, too.

    Carrie Diaries, Monday Mornings: maybe.

Cult, The Following: no way. Too dark and gory for my tastes.

    • Shaun says:

The Americans: spy dramas don’t seem to fare well on TV (*sniff* Rubicon). Hopefully this one will be good since it’s FX.

Alias,Nikita,Covert Affairs….there are probly older ones I’m missing.

      • Sareeta says:

I can’t speak for Alias or Covert Affairs, since I haven’t seen them, but as much as I like Nikita, it has never done well in ratings.

  45. nick1372 says:

My take on the new shows:
Cult – I don’t like mind-boggling TV. I enjoy TV for the thrill ride (No, I’m not stupid). Pass.
The Carrie Diaries – As much as I think AnnaSophia Robb is a fantastic actress, I WILL NOT watch a Sex and the City prequel. Pass.
1600 Penn – Looks terribly unfunny. And I don’t see any likeness to Modern Family or Scandal. You need a better analogy.
The Following – Just not my kind of thing. Pass.
Do No Harm – The same with this. Pass.
Deception – This does look interesting, but I watch too much in that darned Monday at 10 slot. Pass.
    Banshee – A snoozefest. Pass.
The Americans – Looks really interesting, and critics have been saying good things about it. Will try.
Zero Hour – Like the idea, but the promos were so boring. And then there’s that darned Thursday at 8 death slot. I’ll check it out if the ratings are good.
Red Widow – Yes yes yes! Looks great. Will definitely check it out. The most promising new show, for me.
How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life) – Eh. Will check it out if it gets good ratings.
The Family Tools – The trailer is terrible. Leah Remini is awesome, but I won’t be watching. Pass.
Continuum – Definitely will check it out.
Monday Mornings – Looks promising. Will check it out.
    Legit – Zzzzzzz… Pass.
Boston’s Finest – No. Not another boring cop show. Pass.
Golden Boy – Maybe. I’ll have to see a trailer to decide.
Ripper Street – I HATE period dramas. I don’t even know why. Pass.
Hmmm. Nothing really stands out, unlike they have in the past. Winter 2011 had Body of Proof, Fall 2011 had Terra Nova, Winter 2012 had Alcatraz, and Fall 2012 had Last Resort.

  46. John says:

I’m excited for Cult, The Following, Banshee, Ripper Street, Zero Hour and Red Widow

  47. Ron says:

    Cant believe 2013 is here.

Cant wait to see CULT = ALONA TAH yayyyyyayayyaaayyya. HOTT!!

  48. Ron says:

Urrrrgh I hate this. February 19 for cult come on, why couldnt you have pushed Carrie Diaries instead.

  49. aura says:

I was intrigued by the following.
    Red widow not sooooo bad,
may be the cult (if it doesn´t try to too hard to be meta ( a conspiracy within a conspiracy)all the time) and the americans.
    I’d try continuum.(online)
