What's New on TV? Your Guide to The Following, Cult, The Americans and 15 Other Shows

What can the small screen interest you in, come 2013? How about Kevin Bacon as an elite, vodka-nipping FBI profiler on Fox’s The Following? Maybe a teenage, acid-washed jeans-wearing Carrie Bradshaw? And hey, there’s simply no resisting Felicity (aka Keri Russell) as an undercover KGB agent in Reagan-era America.

  • I shall watch the Carrie Diaries only b/c of Freema Agyeman aka MARTHA JONES xD.
The Following, and Cult seem sweet.

    A few look decent.

A few have plots that make me wonder how it’s a TV show

Comment by Brian – December 30, 2012 07:29 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • The Following sounds as gruesome as Dexter, so I may check out Cult instead since it has some of the same behind-the-scenes hands that created the Scream franchise. 1600 Penn looks awful, and the promos for Zero Hour (a show I’d normally be drawn to) look to be trying too hard to convince you that a conspiracy theory is by itself compelling, without really explaining anything about the conspiracy – unlike the Cult’s promos. Among the rest, Do No Harm looks promising and I may give Golden Boy a chance.

Comment by Ken – December 30, 2012 07:38 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I’ll be watching The Americans, Banshee, The Carrie Diaries, Cult, Deception (saw the pilot on NBC.com), The Following, Monday Mornings and Masters of Sex (missing from this list). Ripper Street, Do No Harm and Golden Boy look atrociously boring. Red Widow and Zero Hour look like messes but I can always check it out on Hulu Plus if either of them get decent ratings and feedback. How To Live With Your Parents looks cute but I’m sick of comedies so who knows.

Comment by Candy – December 30, 2012 07:45 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • When I first heard there was going to be a show called Masters of Sex a while back, my first thought was that it would be a scripted drama set in the BDSM lifestyle, then I read what it was about and was somewhat disappointed, I will however still give it a watch.

  • The Americans, The Carrie Diaries, Cult.Deception (For Garber and it’s Revenge sounding way), Do No Harm (Because I was one of the 17 that watched My Own Worst Enemy), The Following (Kevin Bacon and Shawn Ashmore!), Golden Boy (Chi McBride), and Zero Hour.

Comment by Andy – December 30, 2012 08:06 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I watched My Own Worst Enemy too! I knew there were others out there. I was planning to watch Do No Harm anyway since I am a Steven Pasquale fan and as soon as I saw the preview it reminded me of Christian Slater’s show. I really hope it’s good.

  • Dont understand why Continuum is on this list when it’s been out for an entire season already. I could only get through about 3 episodes, it was boring as heck.

Will be checking out Following and Cult. Tentatively Do No Harm and Monday Mornings.

Here’s hoping Cult lasts a good long time, so CW will continue down this darker path it’s been playing at recently.

  • Americans, do yourself a favor and watch Continuum. It was the best new show of the summer and I’m sorry you’ve had to wait so long for it. Erik Knudsen, who plays Alec, is wonderful and I love Rachel Nichols, but Kellog (played by Stephen Lobo) is the real scene-stealer. Incredible show, cannot wait for season 2 this summer.

Comment by erin – December 30, 2012 08:55 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • kellog and kagame are the two highlights of the series, they managed to create really complex characters with the limited amount of time afforded to them as part of an ensemble. i really hope the second season gives more time to lexa doig since i cant even remember her characters name

Comment by Annika – December 31, 2012 12:59 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I agree 100%. I actually didn’t have that high of an expectation going in, but it quickly got me hooked and both raised and met my expectation as the season progressed. I wouldn’t quite put it in the BSG category…yet, but it got the potential to get there. Rachel Nichols’ acting has greatly improved since her Alias day…plus, she’ve always looked great.

  • I’ll be watching Cult, Banshee, The Following, and Monday Mornings for sure when they premiere. Saw the Deception pilot, I may watch episode two but it comes off as a lower quality version of Revenge, which I stopped watching a long time ago. The Americans — I’ll check it out — though I have a feeling it’s not going to stick around for the long haul. Buzz seems to be nill on it.

  • continuum is really good, hopefully the first season takes off in america. ive heard some complaints that it is “liberalist propaganda” but that is a load of crap, anyone who actually watches the show will see that it is fair to all sides in its central conflict.
banshee has me intrigued based on that premise so i will definitely be checking that out.
cult is one i may check out later when i can watch multiple episodes in a row to really get a feel for it.
how i met my job is going to be a miss, the procedural market is too crowded without another getting thrown in; as is 1600 penn, sounds like they dont use the comedy potential of a show set in the white house.
the following has a good premise but it sounds like the premise isnt one that can be sustained for any amount of time.
the only upcoming show which has really grabbed my attention is hanibal but who knows when that will air

  • I am REALLY looking forward to Deception, even though there is a reality gap. Someone in the family would not bring her up on a web search and find that she was working at things, through the years that screamed maybe a cop, at least way overqualified for a maid? I can’t get with James Purefoy being the villain, since I loved his acting in many things, so I won’t watch that show. Golden Boy and Family Tools look fun, so I’ll give them a try.

  • Banshee: I still need to catch up on Strike Back season 2 and Hunted; Banshee sounds like another good reason to subscribe to Cinemax.

The Americans: spy dramas don’t seem to fare well on TV (*sniff* Rubicon). Hopefully this one will be good since it’s FX.

Continuum: sounds like a cool sci-fi show with an interesting concept

Zero Hour: sounds like a fun mystery; trailer reminded me of Angels and Demons/Da Vinci Code.

Ripper Street: Enjoyed Copper. Hopefully this will be good, too.

    Carrie Diaries, Monday Mornings: maybe.

Cult, The Following: no way. Too dark and gory for my tastes.

  • My take on the new shows:
Cult – I don’t like mind-boggling TV. I enjoy TV for the thrill ride (No, I’m not stupid). Pass.
The Carrie Diaries – As much as I think AnnaSophia Robb is a fantastic actress, I WILL NOT watch a Sex and the City prequel. Pass.
1600 Penn – Looks terribly unfunny. And I don’t see any likeness to Modern Family or Scandal. You need a better analogy.
The Following – Just not my kind of thing. Pass.
Do No Harm – The same with this. Pass.
Deception – This does look interesting, but I watch too much in that darned Monday at 10 slot. Pass.
    Banshee – A snoozefest. Pass.
The Americans – Looks really interesting, and critics have been saying good things about it. Will try.
Zero Hour – Like the idea, but the promos were so boring. And then there’s that darned Thursday at 8 death slot. I’ll check it out if the ratings are good.
Red Widow – Yes yes yes! Looks great. Will definitely check it out. The most promising new show, for me.
How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life) – Eh. Will check it out if it gets good ratings.
The Family Tools – The trailer is terrible. Leah Remini is awesome, but I won’t be watching. Pass.
Continuum – Definitely will check it out.
Monday Mornings – Looks promising. Will check it out.
    Legit – Zzzzzzz… Pass.
Boston’s Finest – No. Not another boring cop show. Pass.
Golden Boy – Maybe. I’ll have to see a trailer to decide.
Ripper Street – I HATE period dramas. I don’t even know why. Pass.
Hmmm. Nothing really stands out, unlike they have in the past. Winter 2011 had Body of Proof, Fall 2011 had Terra Nova, Winter 2012 had Alcatraz, and Fall 2012 had Last Resort.
