Grey's Anatomy Boss Shonda Rhimes Breaks Silence on Katherine Heigl Kerfuffle: 'It Stung'

image004Those rumors about Katherine Heigl possibly returning to Grey’s Anatomy for a brief arc? Don’t hold your breath.

In Sunday’s installment of Oprah’s Next Chapter (9/8c, OWN), Oprah Winfrey asks Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes about Heigl’s controversial decision in 2008 to remove her name from Emmy consideration because she did not feel she was “given the material to warrant a nomination.”

“On some level it stung and on some level I was not surprised,” Rhimes tells the Big O, adding, “When people show you who they are, believe them. I carry that [mantra] with me a lot. It has served me well.”

For the record, Heigl apologized for the outburst in a 2010 Entertainment Weekly cover story (penned by yours truly). “At the time I thought I was doing the right thing,” she told me. “And I wanted to be clear that I wasn’t snubbing the Emmys. The night I won [in 2007] was the highlight of my career. I just was afraid that if I said, ‘No comment,’ it was going to come off like I couldn’t be bothered to [enter the race]. But really, I could have more gracefully said that without going into a private work matter. It was between me and the writers. I ambushed them, and it wasn’t very nice or fair.”

  1. Aria says:

It’s quite funny, how people keep commenting on situations they don’t know, thinking their being right. What I mean, is that you don’t know all the details about THIS situation, and you keep writing comments like: “KH was right. The writing was horrible” or “KH was an ungrateful bitch” or “Shonda should get over her ego and bring Izzie back” or “KH shouldn’t come back because she’s a bitch and she bites the hand that feeds”. Some things like that are ridiculous because
    a) Wanting KH back on the show does not give you the right to judge someone’s actions. Would you take back an actress if she did this to you? I don’t think so. So before you comment, think.
    b) Saying bad things about KH is old. People make mistakes, people regret it. It’s not your right to judge who’s right and who’s wrong.

I believe that both women did wrong things, but they’re overly judged about them. People should just let those who know about the situations to handle it.

    • Mary says:

KH criticized the writing not SR, but SR took it personal.

      • A says:

Yeah, that’s exactly what Aria said. KH criticized the writing and SH took it personally. She says that both women did bad things but people shouldn’t judge them that much about that. Didn’t you read carefully?

  2. Renee says:

It’s amazing to me how Shonda is so criticized. She has created some of the best shows on TV right now. Give her credit for that. There would not have been an “Izzie” if it wasn’t for Shonda. I didn’t even know who KH was before Greys. The exposure that she got on Greys is the only reason she has gotten to motion pictures and mediocre ones at that..

  3. Dee says:

While I personally was NOT a fan of Izzie Stevens, and while Izzie’s storyline was complete crap during seasons 4 and 5, that in NO way gave her the right to openly criticize the writers. Yes she may have been honest but, there’s this thing called tact, she shouldve used it. Say all you want about Partick and Ellen, the difference between them and Katherine Heigl, is that while they’ve expressed their issues with the show, it’s been done in a tactful way. Most people complaining about Shonda are those crazy obsessed fans who think Shonda’s a bitch, probably because she did something on the show that they didn’t like. Its just TV, let it go. If you dont like something, DON’T watch it-plain and simple. To be honest, Grey’s writing on a few seasons was/has been complete crap, but like many people have said “don’t bite the hand that feeds you”. Why should Shonda bring Izzie/Katherine back when she’s basically bashed the show that pretty much jump started her career, because let’s face it, not many people knew who she was BEFORE Grey’s. The point is, Heigl apparently has a history of downing projects se does, but then plays the ‘oops, that came out wrong’ card. It’s a little tired and unprofessional. And, she hasn’t had a number one selling movie since she left Grey’s. her best work so far, has been knocked up. Everything else…forgettable! It doesn’t seem like Shonda’s been having too terrible of a time, Grey’s is in it’s 9th season, Private Practice is about to end after 6 seasons and over 100 episodes and Scandal is CLEARLY holding its own. Sure Heigl has adopted two kids and done a few movies but, who’s career is doing better? Shonda’s clearly. Had Heigl handled things in a more tactful way, then maybe Shonda would be more willing to allow her to return for an episode or two. But honestly, would YOU invite a person who has down talked you/disrespected you back to YOUR house?

  4. Apache347 says:

I loved Izzy and all of her quirky ways. Katherine H failed to realize that her role was endearing to her fans. True actors always remember that they are acting and the perception of the fans is what make them great. Obviously Izzy’s fans loved her character and sensitivity, therefore wanted to honor her with a potential Emmy. I always vote for my favorite actors who are nominated for the Emmy. They deserve my vote as a fan. I haven’t supported Katherine H in anything since her arrogant, self-indulgent remark about her role as Izzy on Grey, but I do wish her well.

  5. palette says:

Heigel isnt HONEST – she’s a spoiled star who pouts and whines when she doesn’t get her way. That show was full of washed-up actors (Dempsey) or newcomers (Pompeo, Heigel, etc.) and the minute the show became a smash, many of them became walking cliches – believing their publicity, bitching at crew, etc. And what a shock – her crappy films have bombed and now she wants to do TV. they never learn!

  6. Annie Brooks says:

people needs to get over Izzie she left the show like 5 years ago, shes old news, Joleeeeeeeeeeexxxx!!!!

  7. Ms.Coleman says:

If Izzy was brought back even if its just a few episodes I truly believe the ratings would hit the roof and probably get back to being #1 after Dr.derick got killed off. I stopped watching yes. Ago but I just came back I might leave again if the story lines don’t get better.
