Exclusive: Last Resort, 666 Park Avenue Tweaking Final Episodes to Give Fans Closure

Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue will not leave viewers hanging.

Despite ABC pulling the plug on the freshman dramas last week, the brains behind both shows tell TVLine that they were given enough time to turn their respective swan songs into series finales.

“We have time to tweak,” confirms Last Resort creator Shawn Ryan, adding that Episode 13 will indeed function as a full-fledged series finale.

666 exec producers David Wilcox and Matt Miller, meanwhile, tease that their Sunday spookfest “is building to a powerful and surprising series finale, where all your questions will be answered. We hope fans of the show continue watching all the way to the end of Jane and Henry’s incredible journey to the dark side.”

Is it really the end for 666 though? DVR data released last week showed the ratings for the thriller’s Nov. 4 episode spiking a staggering 77 percent — raising hopes that ABC might un-ring the cancellation bell. The news prompted leading man Dave Annable to vent on Twitter that ABC “f—ed up” by axing the series.

But it’s a decision the network appears to be standing by.

While ABC president Paul Lee calls the DVR surge “amazing,” it’s not enough to offset the show’s miniscule live numbers. “It’s wonderful to see the passion [these] shows have,” he says. “We just have to make sure we monetize it.”

Thoughts? Relieved you’ll get a return on the investment you made in both shows? (Additional reporting by Vlada Gelman)

  • My hubby and I watch both shows. I’m terribly disappointed to lose 666. It is a great show with four strong lead actors that keeps you guessing. The funny thing is that I don’t ususally like supernatural type shows. LR on the other is a muddled mess of a show that I will not miss at all. First, there are way too many characters protrayed by just okay actors. After six episodes, I still cannot tell who is who outside of the two leads. Second, the sub-plots are terrible. There’s no way in real life that the navy would not have killed or imprisioned the island thug that killed one of their own. Yet he’s around for episode after episode to cause trouble. With such crap writing, I kind of glad it’s over although I feel sorry for the actors who did their best.

  • 666 is a good program that should be moved from Football Sunday to MONDAY, also cut those commercials from 10 back to ’3′.AND don’t get the storyline LOST’…

  • I wish they’d just move 666 Park Avenue to a less popular night, like Friday. Clearly it’s popular among those who DVR – like Fringe, Supernatural and Grimm viewers.

    • ABC gets higher ratings on Fridays than either of these shows. Why’d they want to mess that up? Makes zero sense.

  • I’m so disappointed the show was finally getting good and really interesting and now you are pulling the 666 park ave off. That really sucks! I finally find something that isn’t a reallity show to enjoy and it gets pulled. I guess ABC doesn’t know a good thing when they have it. Don’t you know reallity shows are boring. Who cares if Snookie is having a baby or drinking these are just regular people. Boring!!!!

  • Did I hear right last night when they were giving the previews for the next REVENGE, I thought I heard them say for the series finale? Is Revenge over, did I miss that it had been canned?

  • My husband and I love Park Avenue 666!!! I hope they decide not to cancel it! Every time we get into a show it gets canceled! They don’t give these shows a chance!!!

  • Regarding the Nielsen ratings:

As convenient as it is to skip commercials when shows are DVR’d, it is obviously messing up great programming. Maybe the option to fast forward recorded shows should just be removed, at least on recordings of an hour or less. I mean really, DVR are just mini computers, I’m pretty sure they could just program them like they do the OnDemand programs. I’m just so sick of my favorite shows getting cancelled.

  • so disapointed about Last resort cancel…loved that show…was moving at a good pace…much better than revolution (in term of pace). At least we are getting somewhat of an ending. I wish that network would understand that not giving closure to fans, makes them less likely to stick around as much (or care about) when the next show concept shows up. I personally now DVR all my shows and wait to see if it gets cancelled before investing my time into watching it. i got burned so many times already.

  • If tv stations keep axing new series, then WHO will want to watch new series?!!! I can’t deny that most axed series are indeed boring BUT I was watching them and it annoyed me that most of them ended in cliffhangers.

The producers are to blame as well. The audience doesn’t want BORING DRAMA! Many great promising series have been turned into boring dwindling drama series, like Terra Nova, Stargate Universe, Caprica, etc. If we want drama, we’ll watch SOAP OPERA instead!

And please STOP making several seasons arc if the plot is only explored little by little per episode!!! No series is safe! Even popular ones like Heroes and Eureka got axed as well!!! Per-season arc is preferable so when it gets axed, audiences wont be left hanging.

  • I really liked Last Resort but I feel that they’re taking it too many places. What the hell happened to the COB? How can they go an entire episode w/o mentioning him. I think the last 2 episodes have been the weakest overall even though things are just starting to heat up.

  • 666 is a great show and should not be cancelled. I agree with many of the previous comments – get rid of some of these stupid ‘Reality Shows’ and give these new shows a chance. I always have to DVR 666 b/c of sport activities with the kids – as many people have to do…but axing 666 prematurely is a terrible decision. Keep 666 on and give it a chance. People need to think about leaving 1 of their tv’s on even if they can’t watch the show, but still DVR it. Maybe that would help with ratings. Desperate!!!! KEEP 666 Park Avenue going….

  • instead of typing up the story on 666 to bad they didn’t try and get another station to pick it up that would give it a chance in a better timeslot. ABC just sucks. Whose making the decisions over there. Same person whose bright idea for a Dancing With The Stars ‘All-Stars’ edition, Celebrity Diving is now on the schedule that will bring in the ratings.

  • Last Resort has no option but to conclude, it’s story line is linear. 666 Park Avenue is different, in that it can be resurrected American Horror Story style which gives the network chance to “monetize” it. It’s all about the money isn’t it, marraige, church, state, family?

Gotta go now. Have to go out and buy a new family.

  • Damn it Shawn Ryan, you shouldn’t have tweaked. Take donations, and continue the show. How much are production costs? How much would you have to ask of 9.4 million people per season? And let’s not forget I love the show and can’t even legally watch it as I’m outside the US*, how many more millions of viewers do you have that you don’t even know about???????????????

*(I challenge anyone to prove how my infringing the copyright of a show that isn’t airing and so therefore isn’t earning in my region is harming anyone. If anything I’d pay my part for this show if they’d let me… all these self defeating self defined region barriers are harming the media industry………)

  • For the last 3 years, nearly EVERY new show i’ve liked has been cancelled. Now both Last Resort and 666?? That is it for me. i give up. no more new shows on network tv. it has to last at least two seasons before i’ll invest any more time / emotion. I have plenty of fantastic shows on DVD to watch – Firefly, Pushing Daisies, Kings, Unusuals, Wonderfalls, Freaks & Geeks. What do these shows have in common? some network clown cancelled it way way too early… no more.

  • I am very pleased to know that “Last Resort” will have a proper resolution. As a result, I will continue to watch new series on ABC. This should be a policy on all networks. Our time is valuable and we DESERVE this consideration. Every series should plan and shoot a series finale if they go at least 13 episodes.

  • I am sooooooo- tired of networks starting a series that turns out to be good (but put it in a crappy time slot) and then canceling without giving the viewers any closure. I will say I’m happy with what ABC did with Last Resort even though I will miss the show, but they better come up with something for 666 Park Ave or I’m going to quit messing with them. I, like many other viewers, was really impressed with the storyline of the Missing series only to find it canceled after one season – a true shame. C’mon ABC, get your s#!& together!

  • Nielsen ratings make zero sense…. We purposely record everything (2 rooms sometimes) because we have kids and there would be zero chance of relaxing and watching a show at the time it was actually on… Not sure how people actually did this productively back in the day…..We r always busy and watch our shows late at night when the kids are asleep….sometimes a week or two later depending on our schedules…. It’s called taking advantage of our time and DVR’s to maximize production. I’m sure we are not the only ones.

  • I have seen so many good American shows been cancelled over the years and not really giving them a chance to progress, latest 666 Park Ave. may be it is time to change those people who makes the decisions instead i don’t always think it is ratings as they say if that was true why cancel so soon

  • I stopped watching first seasons, because of so many cancellations. But that does not help keep the network interested in the show either. The networks have lost our trust.

  • 666 was a very exciting tv show. I like the change from doctor and lawyer shows. Please make an effort to keep it on, as anything supernatural can go on for years. The cast ensemble were magical. Supernatural TV show has been on for years! ABC never gave it a chance.
