Boy Meets World SequelThe world has met Cory Matthews — is it time now to meet his daughter?

The Disney Channel is in the early stages of developing a Boy Meets World sequel series called Girl Meets World, TVLine has learned exclusively.

UPDATE | ‘Girl Meets World’ — Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel Officially Sign On

Sources say that the cable network is trying to land original series stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel to revisit their roles of sweethearts Cory and Topanga, who married before their ABC sitcom ended its seven-season run. The new series would center on their preteen daughter.

Since wrapping Boy, Savage’s TV guest-star gigs have included BonesChuck and Without a Trace. Fishel’s post-Boy work includes National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze and hosting Style Network’s The Dish

  • If this is on ABC family or even ABC i’m down. If its on Disney Channel, I’m out. It’ll likely be another tween sitcom if its on Disney Channel, which would alienate all of us that grew up on the original.

    • Yeah, I think in terms of keeping it close to the original it would do better on ABCFamily or ABC. Disney would cutesy it up to much and make her a popstar wannabe

  • At first this horrified me. But if they have a Good Luck Charlie vibe to it and not a Shake It Up vibe than this is ok with me.

  • Will it take place in the future because in order for Corey and Topanga to have a preteen daughter, Topanga would have had to have given birth two years before the show ended. The characters would only be 30 or 31 years old

    • It actually does make sense, the last episode aired in 2000. If she got pregnant a year or two after, the girl would be 10-12ish- the same age Cory was in the first season

Comment by Jess – November 2, 2012 07:48 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Show ended in 2000. Which makes it 12 years later. Knowing Cory and Topanga and their inability to wait to being more secure. They could have a child soon after ending up in New York. So pre-teen could mean anywhere between 10 and 12. I would love this. It’s 20 years since the show started in 2013. So it would make a great way to start a new life. Like Degrassi. And I love how they might have Danielle and Ben. Not like they are busy. And getting Rider to show up occasionally. And maybe Feeny. Would love that! My only worry is they will have Cory and Topanga on the verge of divorce given early marriage doesn’t always work out. But then they had a great example in Amy and Alan for marriage. So I am hope I am wrong. Would love to have little girl Matthews having a great family to backup. Maybe her best friend will be Shawn’s son. And they will eventually fall in love.

  • There’s a huge part of me that is extremely skeptical because I’m afraid it’ll be another one of the recent Disney shows (Good Luck Charlie aside) that has the daughter famous in one way or another. However, this could also start paving the way back to old Disney if they stick to the premise of Boy Meets World, which few cheap laughs, no sex jokes and have it go back to light hearted family centered comedy with good life lessons that don’t involve fame or fortune.

Although I guess this is just personal opinion. Also, if they could get Rider and Will for recurring roles with occasional guest roles from the rest of the cast, then I will be more than a happy camper. And if they can’t get any of the original cast, then I say scrap the idea. But for now, I’m gonna wait until I hear casting news before I decide.

  • I’d watch it for sure if they get a few of the original actors back. That being said, I get that it would be more focused on the girl and her friends, and not as much on the parents. So they’ll have to sell me on the new, younger characters, but if the writing and acting is as good as the original show, I’m in.

  • MIND. BLOWN.

I just don’t know how it will fit into the Disney Channel now. Boy Meets World back in the day had substance, with episodes actually meaning something. I really hope they don’t make their “preteen” daughter a wanna-be singer/actor/whatever…because really, that’s basically all Disney does these days.

  • Ugh. The idea of turning the teen leads of a nostalgic but not actually very good 90s sitcom into the parents of a new show sounds like a recipe for disaster on every level.

  • Okay. Boy Meets World is pretty much my favorite show. Of all time. And While I would love to see more of it, Disney Channel in particular currently makes rather crappy shows, and personally, I will be furious if they ruin this (as they most likely will). And I highly doubt they’ll be able to make it anywhere near as good as the original… Even when they aired reruns, they cut out the entire last season. So overall, I would love it if there was eventually a sequel show, but not by Disney Channel. Any of their affiliates are fine, but I mean, come on…

  • as much as i love bmw i could never watch a spinoff unless it had shawn and Eric and jack in it as well. I could never believe that cory and shawn wouldn’t still be friends. Plus Angela! Did her and shawn end up together? They could answer some questions but i dont trust Disney to not screw it up horribly. On the other hand if they could get the majority of the original cast I would watch it just to see if it is good.

Comment by Kari – November 2, 2012 10:24 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Actually they should just make a movie not a TV show. I feel like they could get the entire cast back for a movie but a tv show would be harder.

Comment by TV Gord – November 3, 2012 01:37 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • No, no, no. Please, for the love of all that is good in this world, no.
I am a HUGE fan of the original series, and I am someone who is usually pretty open to reboots or story continuations, but…
Not with this. I would hate it if the people running/writing this show were the same people behind the 90% terrible lineup Disney Channel currently airs.
Hey, Disney could take the concept of the original show and reboot it with a girl if they wanted, but I’m very skeptical that they could successfully create an authentic feeling “next generation” kind of series. It’s a rare feat when shows can do that – I just don’t see it happening with the people currently at Disney.
Please, let’s not ruin a good thing.

    • Here is what will happen….this will end up on ABC on Friday nights. They have Reba (Malibu Country) and Tim Allen (Last Man Standing) already in place. That’s family shows. This will make a 3rd family show. Now all ABC needs is to find a 4th family show and they will get the closest they will ever get to recreating TGIF from the 90′s.

    • Don’t take this to mean I’m a prude who thinks “the media is all trash today” but it should be G to PG rated. That’s how the original show was and that’s how anything related to the show should remain. The original BMW is close to a lot of people’s hearts and its legacy deserves to remain intact.

  • I’ve been watching reruns for years now after having watched the series’ first runs religiously growing up. I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am at the idea of a sequel!!! I’m turning into a little squealing teenager again!!! While there are some shows that Disney has done decently in the last decade or so, the changes that media and social aspects of life that have taken innocence and turned it into trash-talking, slutty-dressing character sitcoms and even cartoons is just sad. Abc family CERTAINLY could NOT do a better job, at least Disney can keep it clean if it’s not good. Anyway, I agree with others, if the original cast, at least Ben & Danielle, can’t be in it — just forget it. Otherwise, this is the best news I’ve gotten since the pregnancy of my last child!!! =) YAY!!! Talk away, but decide quickly, I’m waiting anxiously for the decision.

This show was awesome because it was innocent and had good morals to it. I hope disney doesn’t ruin it by throwing that junk into it. Stay true to the original. It was amazing as is.

      • Unfortunately, it is probably not. Kids today have crap tv to watch and grow up on. It makes me feel so old to say “when I grew up…” but it is true. Kids TV today sucks. I literally had this conversation with a stranger at the mall a week ago (he was wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sweatshirt) about how cartoons today are utter crap. We grew up with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Inspector Gadget. Kids today get a talking sponge.
        .
So unfortunately, the comment above is unlikely to be a joke.

        • Gen. Y (1982-1994) grew up on BMW, BMW is one of the best shows that ever hit TV, at the time it was a innovator, there wasn’t a show like it, I hope they bring over that same concept but bring current world issues like Cyber-bullying, meeting a someone online, texting (to much), etc stuff like that, they can even redo that classic episode of Shawn joining a cult but instead have one of Girls’s friends go into it.

Kid nowadays are stuck with Fish Hook, Gravity Falls, Shake It Up, etc. I miss Ren and Stimpy, I miss Saved By The Bell, but most of all I miss Boy Meets World, it helped me with my struggles. Don’t screw this up DC!

Also remember that episode when they had there college reunion and they said their daughters name was Beverly Glenn… Make That Happen!

  • I would hope that if Ben and Danielle are involved with the show that they would ensure, before signing a contract and getting involved, that the show is going to be done right and remain true to the spirit of the original. The original leaves such a legacy and maintains its loyal fanbase,
    .
Unfortunately, nothing we say or do here is going to change anything about if and/or how they choose to make this series. We can only hope that if they do it that it does not totally destroy our childhood memories
