Saturday Night Live: 15 Dream Hosts!

In a starkly populist move, Saturday Night Live has begun soliciting host suggestions for upcoming episodes via Facebook and Twitter. And while we think that’s a nifty idea, we also think you’ll agree that TVLine readers might be a teensy more discerning than your average couch potatoes.

With that in mind, we’ve whipped up a gallery of unexpected picks for SNL hosting duties. Click on through, then hit the comments with the fruits of your own brainstorming sessions! Live from New York…it’s somebody other than Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Zee says:

There was a rumor going around about Jeremy Renner hosting at the start of this season, but that turned out to only be a rumor and I was very sad about it. I think he’d be great!

    • Zee says:

      Also Allison Janney.

      • j says:

I’ve wanted Allison Janney to host for years. Does anyone remember that episode of Studio 60 where she played herself? She was hosting their show within a show, and she was a lot funnier than most current SNL hosts.

        • Lime says:

Yes! I’m probably the only person who did, but I LOVED Studio 60. They just had the bad luck to debut the same season as 30 Rock.

          • Kel says:

I loved Studio 60 so much!

          • Britta Unfiltered says:

I loved Studio 60 too! You’re not the only one. I think it just had the bad luck to debut on NBC. That network always finds a way to kill its highest quality dramas. Studio 60 would have had better renewal luck on a cable network.

        • Susan says:

I loved Studio 60! I thought it was such a clever show with so much potential.

          • Matt says:

Such is the way of Aaron Sorkin. I still hate that Sports Night only got 2 seasons. Loved every minute of Studio 60.

  2. Mark says:

Where the heck is Matt Damon – how COULD you forget him ??

  3. Giancarlo Esposito, just because I want to see what they would do with Gus Frink (sp?).

  4. Maria says:

    Nathan Fillion.
    Michael Weatherly.
    Pauley Perrette.

  5. yvette says:

    Jim parsons, YES.

  6. Bee says:

    Jennifer Lawrence

  7. Melissa says:

    Jimmy Fallon again!!!!!

  8. Adam Lambert could host and be musical guest, he’s very clever and entertaining

  9. June says:

Really? No Jeremy Renner or Tom Hiddleston on this list? They would be the best!!!!!!!

  10. Lore says:

Blake Shelton, Jim Parsons, Ty Burell? HELL YES!!!!

    • Sg. Grant says:

These are about the only people I’d want to see from the tvline list. Well, them and Joel McHale. Throw in Donald Glover and we have a winner.

    • Emgee says:

      Blake Shelton is absolutely hilarious.
However, SNL’s writing has gone so downhill that it would be an insult to him to ask him to perform it. Personally, I’d rather see him as the musical guest. Leave his humor for him at his concerts.

  11. Jerri says:

Jeremy Renner should host SNL. He’s got great comedic timing and he’s hilarious and a great actor

  12. TMW says:

Meryl Streep has never hosted. I’m amazed she wasn’t on your list.

  13. JDuro says:

Should’ve been a cast member when he auditioned back in the day. He and Steve Carell went on to be cast on Dana Carvey’s short lived ABC sketch comedy show and of course they were also the voices of Ace and Gary of SNL’s “The Ambiguously Gay Duo” cartoon shorts.

  14. Shaira says:

Robert Downey Jr. Now how funny would that be?

  15. Yes to Blake Shelton, Ty Burrell & Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Also it would be fun to see Giancarlo Esposito or Aaron Paul host.

  16. RobMF says:

I love the idea of Blake Shelton hosting SNL, that would be amazing. This one might not be a popular pick but I’ve been waiting for Selena Gomez to host SNL for a while now. I’d love to see Donald Glover do it, either hosting or as the musical guest.

  17. A friend of mine suggested Max Greenfield on Twitter the other day. It’d be absolutely perfect.
But I’d also add Kyle MacLachlan, Matthew Perry and Christina Applegate.

    • Teresa says:

Kyle MacLachlan did host back during the height of Twin Peaks. I remember him doing a great sketch with Mike Myers about a scotch tape store.

  18. eff says:

I think Nathan Fillion would be a great host. He’s quick witted and has this great physical comedy thing going. And he has the way with words, unscripted. McHale is a good choice too.

  19. Dave says:

I think Max Greenfield would be funny. He seems pretty open to doing crazy stuff

  20. Katherine says:

Yes to Joel McHale and Ty Burrell!

Also seconding from the comments: Robert Downey Jr, Stephen Colbert, and Nathan Fillion would be cool

  21. Stacy says:

    Rebel Wilson

  22. Uhhhhh, MIchael Fassbender anyone?

  23. Esaul says:

I’d love to see Anderson Cooper as a host. >.<

  24. DCC says:

Anna Torv! I’d love to see her in a comedy role.

  25. AM says:

I’d love to see Craig Ferguson host. Anyone from Community would be great too, but my vote goes to Jim Rash because Dean Pelton rocks!
I know Julia Louis-Dreyfus was an SNL cast member back in the day, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen her sketches.

    • Britta Unfiltered says:

I’ve seen some. That was back in the dark days of SNL when they were retooling the show. Without foresight, it would have been difficult to know she was going to go on to such fame in life. That writing was terrible and not a good showcase for her talents.

  26. Justin says:

Donald Glover with musical guest childish gambino

  27. Vivi says:

You lost me at Beyonce. Chick can’t act.

  28. Ummmm what about Robert Pattinson and Michael Fassbender

  29. Monica. says:

Nathan Fillion and the rest of the Castle cast.

  30. josh says:

    No Donald Glover?

  31. Derek Johnson says:

So three years ago, but Mary Lynn Rasjkub and Claire Danes.

  32. Tiera says:

I totally second Damon Wayans Jr & Joel McHale

  33. Kate sullivan says:

Can’t ignore tv’s hottest man 2012 Joe Manganiello!

  34. Rose says:

    Alexander Skarsgård! Oh, the hotness.

  35. Nathan Freaking Fillion. Kthx.

  36. carmen morales says:

  37. Cece says:

    Rebel Wilson would be hysterical.

  38. Karla says:

I think Joe Manganiello should be on that list. He’s not just eye candy, you know. Did you see him on How I Met Your Mother?

  39. Joe Manganiello would be just PERFECT for this! #SNLHost

  40. Brendi says:

    Charlie Hunnam :)

  41. A'lice says:

    Benedict Cumberbatch
    Tom Hiddleston
    David Tennant
    Matt Smith
    Chris Hemsworth

  42. I hear Mariska Hargitay has a personality completely opposite of her SVU character, Olivia Benson! Ice-T started a petition to get her invited to do SNL, but I’ve heard nothing. When Mariska was on Ellen Degeneres’ show recently she said Mariska’s personality is that of a really funny person! I think it would be fun to see her not be soooo serious…I’d love to see that!

  43. Lisa Brunetta says:

    It should be Joe Manganiello

  44. emily says:

    Joe Manganiello!!!!

  45. AlyInGA says:

    Joe Manganiello !!!!!!!!

  46. Eliza says:

Loving a lot of the suggestions!

    I’ll add Nick Offerman.

  47. Tara says:

Gene Wilder, James Roday, Matt Bomer, Ryan Seacrest.

    • Brad Englehart says:

Yes!!!!!!!!! Thank You! Gene Wilder would be great! Gilda Radner (Gene Wilder’s ex and SNL NOT Ready For Prime Time Player) would look down with a smile on her face. He’d be great to honor her legacy on the show. Also….. Garrett Morris is pretty funny on Two Broke Girls, ANOTHER Not Ready For Prime Time Player who can finally be READY for Prime Time as host! Let me put in Kat Dennings,Beth Behrs AND Jennifer Coolidge, while I’m on the subject of 2 Broke Girls. So my Recap….
      1. Gene Wilder
      2. Garrett Morris
      3. Kat Dennings
      4.Beth Behrs
      5. Jennifer Coolidge
      oh and 6. Christopher Guest
