Saturday Night Live: 15 Dream Hosts!

In a starkly populist move, Saturday Night Live has begun soliciting host suggestions for upcoming episodes via Facebook and Twitter. And while we think that’s a nifty idea, we also think you’ll agree that TVLine readers might be a teensy more discerning than your average couch potatoes.

With that in mind, we’ve whipped up a gallery of unexpected picks for SNL hosting duties. Click on through, then hit the comments with the fruits of your own brainstorming sessions! Live from New York…it’s somebody other than Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin!

  • There was a rumor going around about Jeremy Renner hosting at the start of this season, but that turned out to only be a rumor and I was very sad about it. I think he’d be great!

    • Also Allison Janney.

      • I’ve wanted Allison Janney to host for years. Does anyone remember that episode of Studio 60 where she played herself? She was hosting their show within a show, and she was a lot funnier than most current SNL hosts.

        • Yes! I’m probably the only person who did, but I LOVED Studio 60. They just had the bad luck to debut the same season as 30 Rock.

          • I loved Studio 60 so much!

          • I loved Studio 60 too! You’re not the only one. I think it just had the bad luck to debut on NBC. That network always finds a way to kill its highest quality dramas. Studio 60 would have had better renewal luck on a cable network.

        • I loved Studio 60! I thought it was such a clever show with so much potential.

          • Such is the way of Aaron Sorkin. I still hate that Sports Night only got 2 seasons. Loved every minute of Studio 60.

  • Blake Shelton, Jim Parsons, Ty Burell? HELL YES!!!!

Comment by Lore – September 28, 2012 03:58 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • These are about the only people I’d want to see from the tvline list. Well, them and Joel McHale. Throw in Donald Glover and we have a winner.

Comment by Sg. Grant – September 28, 2012 11:39 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Blake Shelton is absolutely hilarious.
However, SNL’s writing has gone so downhill that it would be an insult to him to ask him to perform it. Personally, I’d rather see him as the musical guest. Leave his humor for him at his concerts.

Comment by Emgee – September 29, 2012 06:27 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Jeremy Renner should host SNL. He’s got great comedic timing and he’s hilarious and a great actor

Comment by Jerri – September 28, 2012 03:59 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Meryl Streep has never hosted. I’m amazed she wasn’t on your list.

Comment by TMW – September 28, 2012 04:01 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • STEPHEN COLBERT!!!!

Should’ve been a cast member when he auditioned back in the day. He and Steve Carell went on to be cast on Dana Carvey’s short lived ABC sketch comedy show and of course they were also the voices of Ace and Gary of SNL’s “The Ambiguously Gay Duo” cartoon shorts.

    • Beat me to it, I was just going to suggest him.
Fully agreed on Joel McHale, and someone below mentioned Craig Ferguson as well-YES. Any one of those three hosts, you can be sure I would tune in.

  • Yes to Blake Shelton, Ty Burrell & Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Also it would be fun to see Giancarlo Esposito or Aaron Paul host.

  • I love the idea of Blake Shelton hosting SNL, that would be amazing. This one might not be a popular pick but I’ve been waiting for Selena Gomez to host SNL for a while now. I’d love to see Donald Glover do it, either hosting or as the musical guest.

  • A friend of mine suggested Max Greenfield on Twitter the other day. It’d be absolutely perfect.
But I’d also add Kyle MacLachlan, Matthew Perry and Christina Applegate.

Comment by ladyteruki (@ladyteruki) – September 28, 2012 04:04 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Kyle MacLachlan did host back during the height of Twin Peaks. I remember him doing a great sketch with Mike Myers about a scotch tape store.

  • I think Nathan Fillion would be a great host. He’s quick witted and has this great physical comedy thing going. And he has the way with words, unscripted. McHale is a good choice too.

  • I’d love to see Craig Ferguson host. Anyone from Community would be great too, but my vote goes to Jim Rash because Dean Pelton rocks!
I know Julia Louis-Dreyfus was an SNL cast member back in the day, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen her sketches.

Comment by AM – September 28, 2012 04:23 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I’ve seen some. That was back in the dark days of SNL when they were retooling the show. Without foresight, it would have been difficult to know she was going to go on to such fame in life. That writing was terrible and not a good showcase for her talents.

Comment by Britta Unfiltered – September 28, 2012 09:40 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • She also hosted a few years back and some of the sketches were pretty funny, and she in them.

  • I hear Mariska Hargitay has a personality completely opposite of her SVU character, Olivia Benson! Ice-T started a petition to get her invited to do SNL, but I’ve heard nothing. When Mariska was on Ellen Degeneres’ show recently she said Mariska’s personality is that of a really funny person! I think it would be fun to see her not be soooo serious…I’d love to see that!

He’d be great to honor her legacy on the show. Also….. Garrett Morris is pretty funny on Two Broke Girls, ANOTHER Not Ready For Prime Time Player who can finally be READY for Prime Time as host! Let me put in Kat Dennings,Beth Behrs AND Jennifer Coolidge, while I’m on the subject of 2 Broke Girls. So my Recap….
      1. Gene Wilder
      2. Garrett Morris
      3. Kat Dennings
