Fall TV Preview

Grey's Anatomy Exclusive: Who's the New Girl?

Grey's Anatomy Season 9There will be another fresh face roaming the halls of Seattle Grace this fall.

TVLine has learned exclusively that relative newcomer Tessa Ferrer is joining Grey’s Anatomy‘s ninth season in a recurring role.

Little is known about her character, but it’s a safe bet that she will be playing one of the new interns at S.G. — or possibly another hospital to be featured in the coming season. (Remember, several of the docs were due to relocate to new jobs before that plane crash.)

Ferrer, who has a part in the upcoming John Sayles indie Go For Sisters (opposite, coincidentally, former Grey’s star Isaiah Washington), is the latest unit of new blood to be injected into the ABC hit. As previously reportedVeronica Mars‘ Tina Majorino, Friday Night Lights‘ Gaius Charles and True Blood‘s Camilla Luddington have come on board in multi-episode roles.

Grey’s Anatomy returns returns Thursday, Sept. 27 at 9/8c.

And they are casting too many new actor/actress!!! Come on, does really Grey’s need that? They have something like 12 regulars!!!

        • If it is about life in a hospital, yes. New interns would be the norm year after year.

People come, people get planes dropped on them. Stop crying and deal with it. Or, go curl up with your binky and keep crying, cuz it will happen in variable ways on every show you watch, forever, and ever. Amen.

    • Just bc an actor wants to leave the show does not mean they have to be KILLED off. Anyone remember Susan Lewis on ER? Sherry Stringfield was the first character to leave ER and she was not killed. Her exit was plenty dramatic and left the door open for her to return if she wanted to- and she did!!

This could have been done to Lexie.

Comment by etc – August 23, 2012 04:31 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • But they don’t have to KILL HER OFF in order for her to leave. The execution of her exit was absolutely terrible. I’m not a Grey’s Anatomy fan, but I have been following it — and I have to say that the finale was one of the worst episodes of television that I have ever, ever seen. You don’t spend two long seasons building up the Mark/Lexie reunion that you PROMISED, and then decide to randomly drop a plane on her. And then try to justify it by saying that “life can change in an instant”? It’s just poor storytelling.

If she wanted to leave, then fine. Write her out in a more satisfying way. Now that Mark is apparently leaving as well… why not have them leave together? They can hook up and leave the hospital, and go off and live their lives. Don’t drop a freaking plane on her just because she wants out. It throws her five seasons of character buildup out the window, just like that. No payoff whatsoever.

Comment by John DeMayo – August 23, 2012 05:26 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • If your ideas were good, why aren’t you in Shonda’s role? Oh, that’s right. Having Lexie and Mark “hook up” and leave would be incredibly boring writing.

Comment by Gretchen – August 24, 2012 07:29 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • Sure, it would be boring. I’m not saying it would be “great” at all… because I personally find Grey’s Anatomy to be a generally horrible show. BUT, it’s writing 101 — if you build up a relationship for two seasons, you don’t just inexplicably drop a plane on Lexie. There’s no “payoff” for her entire character arc.

Again, I’m not necessarily upset that they wrote Lexie out, or even that they killed her. I’m upset with the way in which they did it. Shonda was going for the shock value, plain and simple. She took the easiest, but also the silliest and unbelievable way out. The odds that the doctors of Seattle Grace would be at the center of a mass shooting AND a plane crash are astronomical. If she really wanted to kill her off, then there were much more emotional and realistic ways to do it. Remember George’s death? THAT is how you kill a character. You got payoff for his entire character arc — he went out a hero. And it was absolutely heartbreaking to have the characters find out that their John Doe patient was one of their own. Lexie’s death just feels lazy and silly… and apart from her emotional scene with Mark, is largely glossed over. No real reaction from the other characters? What’s up with that?

Comment by John DeMayo – August 24, 2012 09:31 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
          • I agree with you on the payoff…however, the “real reaction from the other characters” has yet to happen. Mark and Arizona looked to be in really bad shape not to mention Derek’s hand…they probably are all in shock still and haven’t had time to process it. Wait until the season starts and they get rescued to start dealing with it…not to mention all the others who were back at the hospital.

Comment by KBC – August 24, 2012 09:53 AM PDT
          • @KBC — Sure, some of them may have been in shock. In fact, that’s the only way you could explain Cristina’s behavior (yelling at scared/pinned/injured Arizona to “shut up”, and acting more concerned about your shoe that you are about Lexie). HOWEVER, if she’s in shock, she should not have been able to perform HEART SURGERY on Mark in the middle of the woods.

With the exception of Mark, and Meredith who started sobbing (terrible, terrible acting by Ellen Pompeo), everyone else’ reactions boiled down to… “Oh. Lexie’s dead.” Sure, they could all be in shock and haven’t had the time to “really” react… but still… I would expect at least SOME KIND of reaction in the finale.

Comment by John DeMayo – August 24, 2012 02:28 PM PDT

  • Okay, I’m sad that Lexie’s gone too, but must every post Ausiello makes about Grey’s be barraged with comments like “I will never watch Grey’s Anatomy again!!!” or “Whatever, I’m still mad at Shonda for killing Lexie”. I’m getting really sick of it. Chyler Leigh decided to leave months ago. Get over it!

    • RedRobin, you’re the smartest person posting on this page. Thanks for saying what I’m sure many of us want to say. Get over it people; Leigh OPTED to leave and for ANY actor a good, memorable death scene is favorable over moving out of town or something equally as boring. It’s a TV SHOW; the drama is expected. If there was no drama who would watch it?

    • Thank you!! So nice to see voices of reason, the back lash over Lexie has made me not want to read any Greys scoop! Which is sad as it’s one of my fave shows. And for all the people saying she was their fave – she was MINE too, and I think it is much more exciting to kill her off the way they did than to just have her leave. People will remember how she left for years to come, can people say the same about Burke or Izzy?

    • Amen! Chyler opted out. Shondra made it dramatic. Happy ending are for fairytales, which GA is not.

Anyone else think the actress above kinda looks like the other sister and perhaps will be part of a storyline of 2 grief stricken sisters building a relationship over a shared loss. There was that one episode back in season 2 I think where she came in as a patient but there is story potential here …. the whole “It took a tragedy for us to come together and we owe it to Lexie’s memory to be there for each other” or something -

    • Eric was waiting for his invitations back to the show. he really didn’t want to leave. ABC need money for the “PRECIOUS 3) WHO I LOVE. ABC made Shonda do their dirty work and pushed Eric out. Chyler probably knew something was coming and that one of the reasons she left and family. COME ON PEOPLE 3 FOR 3 ITS A NO BRAINER

      • But you don’t have to resort to piss-poor storytelling in order to write characters out. You’re telling me the best possible way to write Lexie out is to drop a plane on her? You can’t come up with a more satisfying conclusion to her character’s story than to randomly crush her to death?

I don’t have a problem with Chyler Leigh or Lexie Grey leaving the show — I have a problem with the manner in which Shonda Rhimes did it. She’s a hack.

Comment by John DeMayo – August 23, 2012 05:36 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • I know everyone is upset about how she did the finale and i agree that shonda comes off a little arrogant sometimes but as far as season finales she usually always tries to leave an shocking gutwrenching (but also well written)finale. Last season abc wanted to make cuts. Money got in the way of the creativity because she had no idea FOR SURE who would sign a contract for another season. Chyler was theonly cast member that wanted out for personal reasons. She wantsto be with her family. All the people complaining answer me this: how would YOU write your explosive emotional cliffhanging finale if you had about TWELVE major characters/actors without contracts (because their contracts were up) who could jump ship @ anytime & probably would if they didnt get an increase in their pay or want to accept less money? How would you write a highly intense finale that left the door open for ANY of them to be missing in the premiere (because not all actors are classy like t.r knight & would come back after doing their final scenes to help the writers wrap up a storyline) how would yall write it?

Comment by tee jay – August 24, 2012 05:25 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
          • But that’s no way to run a show. You just can’t “not know” who is coming back for the next season… there is no way to tell a good story like that. Both the network, and Shonda dropped the ball, big time. What they ended up with was a very poorly written finale that screamed “We don’t know what’s going to happen next, so let’s leave them stranded in the wilderness”. Lame.

The entire scenario is cringe-worthily bad. First, the odds that the same doctors involved in a mass shooting would end up in a plane crash are astronomically high. It wouldn’t happen. Second, the way the characters acted after the crash was just pathetic. Cristina’s “We were in a plane. And it crashed. A plane crash.” line was awful. Not to mention that instead of wanting to find the rest of her friends, she’s all “I lost my shoe. have you seen my shoe?” And don’t tell me she was just in shock, because she’s perfectly capable of talking to Meredith and DOING MAKESHIFT HEART SURGERY ON MARK a bit later. Oh, and then she tells a screaming, scared, injured, and pinned Arizona to “SHUT UP”? What the hell? Are you kidding me?

Lexie’s death was anti-climactic and forced. There was literally zero payoff for her character arc that had been built up over the previous five seasons. What was the point of having her on the show if at the last minute, you decide to drop a plane on her?

  • Jeez. Seriously. Shonda can’t even write decent quality sl’s for over bloated cast she has yet now she’s added yet another to the mess. Could care less about a new cast member. I’d prefer to see ORIGINAL cast get decent thought provoking sl’s but I quickly remembered Shonda Rhimes wouldn’t know quality intelligent sl’s if they slapped her in her face. Her m.o. is to just keep adding newbies.

    • Its funny that you guys say she doesnt know quality storylines…… YET she got all of you SO INVESTED in her show that death of characters literally pisses you guys off. Even funnier? Everyone thats saying they arent going to watch anymore will probably be the first ones on the couch to “observe” how screwed up the premiere is…. only so they can complain some more of course. LOL

      • Heh..I love it. The “Shonda doesn’t know quality storylines” crowd–yet, Shonda has millions and is known by her first name and got that crowd hooked? Doesn’t say much for those whining, I guess.

Comment by Gretchen – August 24, 2012 07:33 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • No one’s denying that she initially created a great premise and some excellent characters. But the problem is that she has no idea *what to do with them* now. She’s a hack. Dropping their plane out of the sky was unrealistic, and felt incredibly forced. The writing quality of that episode was absolutely horrendous. Cristina telling and injured Arizona to “shut up”? Really? Overall, there are scores of more realistic, and more emotionally satisfying ways to write Lexie off the show. The plane crash just feels lazy, and was poorly handled.

The best part of the episode was Owen firing Teddy, so she could go out and live her life. That, I’ll acknowledge, was good writing — ignoring the fact that the idea was lifted from an episode of “House” earlier in the season.

Comment by John DeMayo – August 24, 2012 09:46 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • again i ask you…. what would you have done? TWELVE ACTORS. that isn’t just half the cast that basically is the cast. The contracts are up… some are new comers that are relevant to a continuing storyline for the new season but they’ve never been contracted as a regular. in BOTH categories no one is guaranteed to stick around.

If you guys want to be angry at anyone it should ultimately be the studio and the cast (although i dont see how you can blame someone for holding out on signing a contract if they think they can stand to make more money) because shonda admitted numerous times that she had to tear apart the original finale she had planned because the negotiations for who would be willing to come back next season werent going as well. obviously ellen pompeo can pretty much pick a number because without her their would be no greys & oh & dempsey are set too. everyone else is trying to see what the studio is willing to dish out. . . notice on HOUSE laurie was safe of course but cuddy needed to take a pay cut. . . she didn’t like it so she walked BUT their studio started negotiating the contracts early enough for them to figure out how to write her out.

greys anatomy is an ENSEMBLE CAST. on house we might not necessarily notice cuddy but if EIGHT out of 12 actors who seemed happy or resolved or part of a cliffhanger decided to say “pay up or i’ll walk” viewers would notice & shonda would REALLY be in the corner.

that being said. . . i loved lexie & sloan but hated the will they or wont they thing they had going. it was annoying. & i have no idea how shes going to fix this. i’m excited to see tho

Comment by j tee – August 24, 2012 10:20 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
          • That’s easy. They were all pretty much up for jobs at other hospitals, correct? You leave it at that. You leave them all “undecided” and not knowing the future in the finale. If some don’t come back, you explain that they took the other jobs. What you *don’t* do, is crash their plane. It’s unrealistic, and incredibly juvenile, and it leaves you with absolutely zero payoff for Lexie Grey, the character, or Lexie + Mark, the relationship. Everything you have built up over the course of several seasons can’t get thrown away with no payoff — that is bad writing. Shonda would argue that the “life can change in an instant” IS the payoff… but again, it’s just lazy, poor storytelling.

Ultimately, the blame comes down to all parties involved. Shame on ABC and the actors for putting the storytelling of the show in jeopardy, and shame on Shonda for not coming up with a *reasonable* and *realistic* season finale solution sooner. What she ended up with was an extremely last-minute “forced” idea that came off incredibly cheesy.

Her nose & chin is from her father, Gabriel Ferrer, whose brother is well-known character actor Miguel Ferrer. Their parents were actor Jose Ferrer & singer, Rosemary Clooney. Which means Tessa is also related to George Clooney.
