Style to Air Gossip Girl from the Very Beginning — What Stories/Seasons Should Virgins Avoid?

Get More: News

As The CW’s Gossip Girl prepares to launch its final season (on Oct. 8), the Style network announced that it would be airing episodes of the sudser starting from very beginning.

Starting Aug. 15, GG episodes will air in batches of three every Wednesday from 8 to 11 pm EST. Style will also present an all-day Gossip Girl marathon on Monday, Sept. 3 aka Labor Day.

From the moment I shared this news via Twitter, many of you were quick to weigh in with excitement and/or warnings about what seasons should be skipped right over — with most of the votes going to Season 5.

Gossip fans, what seasons/storylines would you advise first-times to be wary of as they check out the sudser on Style? And what episodes would you suggest for the Labor Day marathon, perhaps adopting a theme of “Oy, this was a labor to sit through”?

Lastly, on a positive note, what classic moments/early arcs are you looking forward to revisiting?

  • Why isn’t anyone recommending ALL Georgina episodes? She is clearly the best character even though just recurring!

    • I find that a little Georgina goes a looong way, haha. I really don’t need to see her for more than a few scenes per season…

      • IA on the Georgina front. 1-2 episodes a season are just about right. For the final season, I believe we are getting MUCH more than usual. But, given the circumstances, I’ll make an exception.

        • Small doses of Georgina goes a LONG way! Believe it or not, I am kinda excited for Dangina in S6. She is the ONLY woman Humpty has NOT managed to suck the life out of on-screen!

  • Season three is just ok,the weakest and my least favorite.I actually really liked season four &five & cant wait for six but am probably the only one sad thats the final season. What to avoid:Serena &Carter,Blair &Carter,Serena &,Ben, Bart returning from “the dead”,Serena &Colin, Dan &Vanessa, Georgina in seasons two &three,Serena &Trip,Serena so desperate to have her daddy back shell try to break up Rufly & help her dad escape police in season three,Dan/Georgina/baby Milo.

  • Season 1 and Season 2 are the best. Season 3 is OK but mediocre. Season 4 started out strong with the Blair and Serena in Paris episodes. Chuck and Blair’s train station scene still gives me goosebumps. Gossip Girl took a major dip in quality in the second half of Season 4 when all the main characters got seperated into storylines with lame guest stars except for Dan and Blair. Season 5 was just a total mess. There were a few good scenes here and there in the first half that were good but in general it was weak. Gossip Girl really got bad with Blair’s God pact in the second half. Then it got exponentially worse when Dan and Blair started dating. The show got it’s groove back when Blair starting hanging out with the NJBC again but it needs to make alot of changes if it wants to even approach the quality of Season 3 again. Season 3 wasn’t that great so that tells you how incredibly bad the second half of Season 5 turned out to be. Fingers crossed Season 6 is more like Gossip Girl’s glory days of Season 1 and Season 2 and those are the episodes the Style Channel puts in the marathon.

  • Just make sure to watch the first two seasons first – the essence of Gossip Girl is in there. The problem with the following seasons is they graduated from high school and fast forwarded their lives to adulthood, and college storylines were just an excuse to embarrass the characters and occasionally bring minions/mean girl tropes back.

Put the second halves of the other seasons in the background while doing your chores or whatever just so you know the kind of drivel these writers have pulled since then.

    • Agreed. Personally, I recommend all pre-strike episodes, since afterwards the show was hellbent on trying to maintain an OMG factor.

  • Watch everything but season 5. That’s when the show went waaaay downhill, as proven by the absurdly low ratings. Seasons 1 and 2 are by far the best. Every Chair moment is a must see. Blairena. Nate/Chuck. NJBC. Jenny Humphrey is a riot. Avoid all Dairsaster moments. That BS cost us a full season 6. Thanks a lot Safran.

  • Watch season 1 only honestly…….dan and serena were good to each other and made sense…. serena was a good person, dan was a likable underdog….. and chair was to the point and not drawn out like it happened sometimes during season 2 and all the crazyness after…….

  • After dealing with BLouis for what, 20eps?, then we had the accident that nearly killed Chuck and took Blair’s baby, a traumatic wedding to Louis that was no fairytale; we got Dair. It was adding insult to injury. I get there are fans of the pairing, but it fell flat and insulted so many previously loved couples (CB, NB, DS) it’s no wonder S5 is the least favored season; it all went very wrong. Here’s hoping S6 is far from the Dairsaster S5 was. I’m reading for Chair happiness to rule; King and Queen take their throne.

  • As almost everyone has said watch all of season 1 and season 2. That’s Gossip Girl at it’s finest. Season 3 is ok. Season 4 started out good and got bad in the second half with all the guest stars and cast isolation. I think that is really key: Cast integration. I’m not a Dair fan at all but I think what made the second half of Season 4 so bad wasn’t Dair so much as the fact the only core characters that had a storyline together were Dan and Blair. Chuck was off in the Thorpe story. Nate was with Raina. Serena was with Ben. Lily and Rufus were MIA as far as I can recall. Jenny and Vanessa were both gone from the show.

Now season 5 is bad on a whole other level. A total clustereff with retcons like the essay contest; screwed up characterization like shady Dan, Blair oblivious to Serena and being flakey about her romantic feelings; crazy storylines like Blair’s god pact and the insanity of Chuck’s parentage, etc. But having said that I would only tell a Gossip Girl virgin to avoid 5×15 to 5×21. You can completely avoid 5×15 to 5×21 and not miss anything crucial. In fact you’ll avoid alot of misdirection BS like Dair dating, who is Chuck’s dad, who is Chuck’s mom, Lola and Nate, etc

    • I agree that Season 1 to 2×13 is by far the best of Gossip Girl. You can just watch a clipshow of good moments for the rest of the series like Chuck and Blair outside Serena’s hospital room, Serena and Blair’s fight and then make up scene in Paris, Chuck and Blair at the Gare du nord, Blair banishing Jenny from the UES, Blair making Jenny her queen after graduation, Chuck finally saying “I love you” to Blair, Those are the moments I hope to watch again.

  • Gossip Girl was only truly great from the pilot until episode 1×16. Season two was okay but not nearly as great as season one and season three was trash. Season four was another great season for the most part (my second favourite) and then season five was pretty much the worst.

  • First, let me say I love the picture you picked because that was when Chuck and Blair were such villiany villians. They were so fun. Second, I’d reccomend Gossip Girl virgins watch all of Season one and Season two. Watch Season three while folding your laundry, doing yoga, anything to make it an efficient use of your time. First half of Season four is must see. Second half of Season four go back to your laundry. Season five should just be avoided at all cost. Just watch the finale so you are caught up for Season six. Sure you will be scratching your head at alot of storylines and wondering how the hell that happened – Dan and Blair are a couple, Bart comes back from the dead, Blair is a royal divorcee, etc But you don’t actually want to watch those stories play out. You will feel you’ve wasted hours of your life that you cannot get back. No amount of laundry folding can make those hours an efficient use of your time.

  • i agree with most of the people here…loved season 1 and 2 althoug there were some hits and misses in the last half of s2 but 2×25 redeemed the season IMO. i kinda enjoyed the first half of season 3 but it was the season safran took over and the descent of the characters and storylines began.
although i hated the second half was s3, loved the first half of s4 with some interesting storylines with chuck-blair, serena and juliet but then the downfall began after 4×11…but i found myself tuning back in hopes to see chuck-blair and blair-serena scenes which is the core of gossip girl……
In terms of that s5 only had what? 5 CB and SB scenes in total? s5 was a disaster, ruining the popular character of blair with ridiculous storylines until the finale…
so, i suggest watching the first 2 seasons with no fear and s3-4 with some reservations and completely avoiding s5 which was simply unwatchable!

  • Listen up, GG virgins. The best things about Gossip Girl have always been (and will always be) the Chuck/Blair love story and the Serena/Blair friendship. Really you should probably stop at 2×25, but if (like me) you love Chuck/Blair too much to stop watching, then I suggest watching from the Pilot until 5×13, then skipping the rest of S5 until 5×24. That way you’ll get 4 1/2 seasons of Gossip Girl and miss the dull mess that was the 1/2 season of Inside aka DAIRSASTER 2012.

NB: You may feel at times that the show is trying to Make Dan Happen. You will wonder why the show is doing this when you do not like or care about him. It will then try EVEN HARDER to Make Dan Happen. It will continue to fail at this. Look on the bright side and use Dan’s scenes to make coffee or send a few texts. SPOILER: they never ever Make Dan Happen.

(Also, ignore anyone who tells you that the DB friendship in S4 was the show’s “renaissance”. Their ship goggles prevent them from seeing that the DB/Serena & Ben/Chuck & Raina arc in late S4 was the dullest the show’s ever done – oh, until 5×13-5×22 anyway).

  • Every season has had its good and bad episodes but they were easy to get through because they only lasted a few episodes and then it would be back to being good or at least entertaining BUT season 5 after the Royal wedding the show was nearly unwatchable as indicated by how many people tuned out. Too many dairastrous episodes centred around a couple that a lot of the viewers didn’t like or understand. If they had only lasted one or two episodes it would have been bearable but unfortunately that didn’t happen. To sum up with a line GG used at the end of 5×22 “haven’t we paid the toll enough for that relationship already?” Yes the audience did and now we only have a 10 episode final season!

  • WATCH: EVERYTHING Chuck&Blair-related (aka CHAIR/Bluck/CB/Waldass)….Their love story is the CENTERPIECE of the show & will prepare you for the final season as we watch our CHAIRYTALE come to fruition in S6, including our MUCH-anticipated CHAIR Wedding!!! It will be VERY clear to newbies why there is so much investment in Chuck&Blair via the fans & show right from the start of the series. Seasons 1-3 best lay the framework of the show’s core. This is back when co-creators Josh Schwartz (Josh 1.0) & Stephanie Savage were at the helm full-time & giving GG their all before other projects distracted their attention from the show.

However, S3 has C&B as a committed couple, but largely in the background for the 1st half of the season, only to bring them front & center in the 2nd half for more CB angst. This is the beginning of GG’s downfall on MANY levels (creatively, ratings, story-wise, continuity, show integrity, etc.) under Josh Safran’s (Josh 2.0) reign. The show has some great moments & a few strong episodes in the 1st halves of S4 & S5–many of which belong to Chuck&Blair–but they are few & far between because the show had lost its center/compass at this point because CHAIR was downplayed for large chunks of time in the 2nd halves of S4 & S5. And, the show suffers GREATLY because of it….The impact is palatable on-screen!! Ed Westwick & Leighton Meester (Chuck & Blair) have created such an iconic & beloved pairing that NO ONE & NOTHING can compare to it….They are quite simply PERFECTION together in EVERY way & so in sync with each other!!! They are a pleasure & privilege to watch and incandescent together. The emotions EW/LM elicit together & from each other is UNMATCHED….They make CHAIR come to life!!!

The first halves of S4 & S5 are also important pieces to the show’s canvas, yet they become increasing uneven & OOC/OTT, especially in terms of the characters’ actions/behavior. This is especially true of the much-maligned & deservedly so S5!! However, the last 2 episodes of S4 (4.21 & 4.22) bring to breathe life back into the show & recapture its core. And, YOU CANNOT MISS THE SEASON 5 FINALE (5.24)!!

AVOID: 2nd halves of S4 & S5–episodes after 4.10 until 4.20 are obtuse & OOC. With S5, the show entered “TWILIGHT ZONE” after the 100th episode (5.13). I would skip over 5.15-5.21 completely & you won’t miss anything of importance and it will spare much OOC/OTT behavior/SLs that brought NOTHING to the show in terms of history or creativity.

I would recommend watching 5.23 & 5.24 to prepare for the final season w/CHAIR, Josh 1.0, & Savage back at the helm….OH, HOW THEY HAVE BEEN MISSED!!!!!

  • I wouldn’t watch any of it tbh, its a terrible show that can not tell a cohesive storyline to save its life. It’s predictable, boring, and goes really off the rails in S3 with the Indecent Proposal storyline, I mean who can relate to a girl being prostituted out for a hotel and not only that you are supposed to root for her to be with the guy who did it. Nothing on this show ever makes sense, all the characters are horrible, they never grow, they never react to anything realistically, everyone’s related, an attempted rapist is the romantic lead, a God pact and a dowry was an actual legit storyline they tried to tell seriously, and the writers have had the male counterpart of the OTP of the show prostitute the girl counterpart out, almost punch her, treat other girls better, called her names, humiliated her, manipulated her, emotional abused her and YET she is still made to be in love with him, worship him, and beg him for his love.

I think this show is probably one of the worst shows I have ever had the misfortune of watching. I actually used to love this show, used to really enjoy Chair but they will go down as one of the worst romantic pairings to ever exist IMO, and again as I said on top of the offensive nature of the show, its also just really boring and badly written. Even 90210 tells more cohesive story-lines than GG does, but it is what its. I would recommend NO ONE watch this show anymore.

      • Eh, I didn’t think Dair was that greatly written either, they had potential but the writers squandered it. Chair had potential to at one time too, but I really can’t remember the last time they had a storyline that wasn’t about their epic love that can’t be. The only reason I liked Dair better is because they weren’t offensive in nature, and they were just kind of refreshing on a show that had focused on one relationship for sooooooooooooo long. Viewers need change sometimes, this show does the same thing over and over and acts like it is brand new. They also skip over the more interesting aspects of their storylines, like seeing Blair react to her miscarriage etc Ever season since S3 has had Blair running to tell Chuck she loves him, yet every time I am supposed to care, I mean why would I? I know they end up together, so I get making drama for a bit but jeez just put them together and be done with it.

Also I mean the show is supposed to be about Serena/Blair as best friends but how can I buy that? I mean Serena has slept with Blairs boyfriend TWICE in the exact same place, who would be friends with someone after that? It makes no sense, lmao. I just can’t with GG anymore, such an interesting premise with so much storyline potential and they just never did anything with it. I guess I hung on hoping that it would mean something in the end but it doesn’t, the characters are still exactly who they were in S1, it was a pointless journey. It just ended up being a heartless show muddled in its own pretentiousness and obsessed with OMGs that rarely shocked anyone.

        *shrugs*

And yes, it is sad that Dair is dead and an abusive relationship like Chuck and Blair’s continues to be glorified and romanticized but people see what they wanna see – actually no, sorry, I’ll rephrase, the showrunners clearly don’t see anything wrong with this relationship so I can’t blame other people for not seeing it either, but I wish they could.

GG is a show that from Monday to Monday, I would forget alot of the smaller plot points that happened previously. At any rate, this is a good fit for Style (may bring in a younger crowd) and great look for the show! The possibility of being able to watch SATC, ANTM and GG on the same channel excites me waaaaay more than it should.

  • Me thinkith, Dair Stinkith! Everyone else thought so too because Season 5 crashed and burned! I would skip that!! Watch everything that isn’t Dair heavy!! Dan is great with Serena, Vanessa, Chuck, Nate. He happens to suck with Blair big time!

  • Focus on your core ships: Chuck and Blair, Blair and Serena, Nate and Serena, Chuck and Nate. Anything that is heavy NJBC is good. Jenny was pretty entertaining. You can skip Anything that is has heavy Dan, Vanessa, and Ivy. If you want to watch Dan and Serena or Vanessa and Nate, that’s fine. Other than that, I would skip both Dan and Vanessa heavy episodes as much as possible. The best guest starts are Cece, Georgina, Jack, Carter, and Bart.

The best seasons are S1 and 2. S3 was okay. S4 started out good, but drastically went down hill towards the middle of the season. S5 can be flushed. S5 was a total nightmare. Even though I own season 1-4 on dvd, I am going to skip 5 because it woud just end up being expensive coasters. Terrible season!

  • The core couples of Gossip Girl are Chuck and Blair, Lily and Rufus, and Dan and Serena. They at least touch on each of those couples every single season. The core friendships are Blair and Serena, Chuck and Nate, Nate and Dan, used to be Dan and Vanessa, and Jenny and Vanessa. S1 and S2 are the best seasons. S3 was kinda boring, but basically good. S4 had some good episodes, but mostly sucked. S5 was like the twilightzone. They put Dan and Blair together in S5. That is how baazar and ridiculous that it got. Skip S5.

Other good relationships are Nate and Serena, Carter and Serena, Nate and Vanessa.

  • Chuck and Blair are the best. Nate and Serena are the best. Those are the relationships I would recommend.

I would highly, highly recommend skipping Season 5. It was the worst! Season 6 is already looking 100x better! Thank goodness!

  • Watch Season 1, 2, and 3. Watch the first half of 4, and skip the second half. Skip 5 all together. Season 5 was a nightmare until the very last 60 seconds of the season finale. So skip season 5, and look up the last minute of the season finale on youtube.

  • Season 5 is the worst season ever! The other four seasons are fun to watch.. Also skip everything featuring Dan& Blair and Jenny in season 3. maybe even Jenny in season 2…

  • Love the picture (Chuck and Blair yay!) but I agree avoid season 5, boring with Blair marrying the most annoying guest star to outstay his debatable welcome and the DB relationship which should have never progressed past friends and only made Dan and Blair unbearable to watch and easy to hate.
Honestly anything from season 3 onwards should come with a watch at your own risk apart from a few scenes such as 3×03 where Chuck and Blair were a couple and actually had more then 2 seconds of air time together, 4×02 and the train station scene between Chuck and Blair and 4×07-4×09 (the best three episodes of the last two seasons in my opinion).
Oh but I would suggest starting GG at 1×07 too, that is one of the best episodes.

  • I’d skip entirely Season 5. (Just youtube Chuck’s scenes). It was simply awful and painful to watch. Insulting to say the least. No wonder it cost the show a full new season.

  • Gossip Girl Virgins! Watch Season 1 and Season 2 and then youtube some stories/scenes after that. These are the ones I’d youtube:
    Carter and Serena (Season 3)
    Nate and Serena (Season 3)
    Jenny’s crazy spiral (Season 3)
All the cute, supportive, sweet copious spooning scenes for Chuck and Blair (Season 3 – various scenes from 3.01 to 3.16)
The Season 3 finale where everything goes to hell (Season 3 – 3.22)
Blair and Serena in Paris (Season 4 – 4.01 and 4.02)
Chuck and Blair’s epic scene at the Gard du Nord (Season 4, episode 4.02)
Chuck and Blair’s evolution from hate sex to “I need to be a powerful woman scenes (Season 4 from 4.07 to 4.09)
The Juliet Takedown Story (Season 4 – first half)
    Chuck’s apology (Season 5 – 5.06)
The NJBC is back (Season 5 – 5.22)
The Season 5 finale with all it’s craziness including Serena and Dan cheating barsex (Season 5 – 5.24)

  • Watch: S1-3 to understand the show’s core–which is Chuck&Blair!!

Chuck & Blair’s love IS EPIC & they ARE the HEART & SOUL of GG. They are an iconic couple & CB are THE reason GG became a cult phenomenon!! Making the CB pairing a phenom right along w/it!! The show got its buzz & following solely because of Chuck & Blair. They put GG on the map & kept it there!!! Those are the FACTS!!! The audience, TPTB, & critics ADORE Chuck&Blair and always reference how they are the show’s centerpiece and that has been the case throughout the series run!! The VAST MAJORITY of the audience tunes in for Chuck & Blair’s journey & their EPIC, DESTINED love story. That has/is/will always be the case AND S6 is OUR WELL-EARNED PAYOFF!!! We made it to the finish line: BRING ON OUR CHAIRYTALE 4 LIFE & Waldass Babies!!! #CHAIRFamily

  • I would also recommend 1st halves of S4 (up to 4.10) & S5 (up to 5.13) then skip to the last 2 episodes of S4 (4.21-22) and last 3 episodes of S5 (5.22-24), in addition to full S1-S3. That will prepare you for the 6th & final season–CHAIRYTALE FTW!!

Avoid 4.11-4.20 and 5.14-21….Nothing but OOC filler!

  • Only truly endorse seasons 1 and 2. 3′s somewhat watchable, in spite of grave errors separating Chuck & Blair near season’s end…and that Haylie Duff mess, etc. Season 4 is flawed, but must-watch for CB in 4×02 and 4×07-4×09. Then skip to 4×22. VIEWERS BEWARE: pass on Season 5 entirely unless you like your misery served Humphrey-style w/ side of Louis & lost-and-forgotten bebe. Just watch best of Chuck, and Chuck/Blair in S05 on YouTube.

  • All Chuck & Blair SLs are MUST SEE…They are GG’s alpha & ENDGAME pairing!! You will need to watch all their story arcs to prepare for the 6th & final season. S1-S3 focus heavily on CB, but S3 has its pitfalls. S4&S5 should be watched in chunks & taken with a grain of salt because as many others have commented there is a TON of OOC, nonsensical filler & misdirection present. This is especially the case with S5!!!

Honestly, I would only recommend the first half of S4 (up to 4.10) then skip to the last 2 epis. (4.21 & 22).

As for S5, I can only recommend a few episodes in the first half, but even those are uneven & full of misdirection. I will not be buying it on DVD, which is a first because I am an avid fan with all the seasons. But, I will not be buying S5! Several people have recommended You Tube for the S5 Chuck & Chuck/Blair Scenes….That could be the way to go quite honestly because S5 was a HORRIFIC mess on so many levels!!! HOWEVER, YOU MUST WATCH THE S5 FINALE (5.24)…That’s where the story dumps the OOC crap & gets back on track!!!

  • WATCH everything & anything involving Chuck & Blair, NJBC (Non-Judgmental Breakfast Club–Blair/Chuck/Nate/Serena friendship & teamwork), and the Blair-Serena friendship. Those elements are the backbone & compass of the show!!

S1 & S2 are stellar, S3 is very good but has its misses, S4 is hit-and-miss (1st half is very good up 4.10 then does not rebound until last 2 epis. 4.21 & 4.22), & S5 is GOD AWFUL! It’s HEINOUS and chalk full of OOC behavior & misdirection. Only a few episodes of S5 are worthwhile & add intergrity to the show’s history. You Tube S5 & DO NOT MISS the S5 finale…EPIC & gets you ready for the finish line!!
