Joel Kinnaman Weighs In on a Killing Season 3: 'It Would Have to Reboot Itself'

Get More: Interviews, Scoop

The Killing‘s Linden and Holder finally got to the bottom of Rosie Larsen’s murder in last weekend’s finale, but a bigger mystery surrounds what will become of the not-yet-renewed AMC drama. At least one person remains hopeful about a Season 3 pick-up, and for good reason: the show’s scrappy detective, Joel Kinnaman.

“We’ve invested a lot in these characters and want to see how they continue their journey,” he tells TVLine, making a case for a third go-round in Seattle. “I feel like Linden and Holder [are] just [getting] started.”

Of course, another season of the gritty crime drama would mean that “the series has to reboot itself,” Kinnaman explains — an “interesting” prospect in his eyes. “It’s like the first season [of a show], where it [would] be original material and not based on the Danish [series] anymore.”

As for Season 3 without his character’s other-half/partner, Linden (played by Mireille Enos) — who presumably quit the force in the finale’s final moments — Kinnaman says with a laugh that that is unlikely. “I imagine that there would be a new case, and that Linden’s obsessive nature is not going to keep her away from police work for too long. “

  • Please don’t cancel this series!!! I agree with @Carrie – the fans that expected a mystery solved in one season don’t understand mysteries!! Really?! What is there to complain about? This is one of the most fascinating, complex, funny, original TV shows that doesn’t involve zombies, constant nudity, mind-numbing violence and gore, etc… Please reward these amazing actors and their subtle yet somehow powerhouse performances. Not everyone is looking for the next “CSI” or “Desperate Housewives.” Linden/Holder team cannot be beat. Removing one would also kill the true fans of “The Killing.” If anyone knows of another way to directly write to AMC, please let me know. All I saw on their site were blogs and most of them were negative. Don’t want to join that! Truly don’t understand how ratings went down when the show continued to be excellent.

    • J.C. – you need to let AMC know how you feel. Your comment was very compelling. Go on AMC’s website and click on their contact section. You’ll be able to send an email. Hopefully if they get enough feedback they will renew. I’m concerned because I read season 2 was announced before sesson 1 ended.

      • Thanks, Christie. Will do. It is very disconcerting. I’ve been googling about the show all morning but no announcements have been made of a renewal. It’s tough losing such real characters who you’ve grown to care about. Hard to believe “Lost” went on and on and on and got worse and worse and worse (and more absurd!) and yet here we are fighting for a lousy 3rd season of a show that was so much more intelligent and (brutally) honest. I appreciate your positive feedback!

  • I’m chomping at the bits for a 3rd season! I hadn’t watched the first season but was strongly encouraged to do so by a family member who needed someone to talk it over with. After the 1st episode I was hooked! I’m going through withdrawals now…please bring it back! Holder and Linden are awesome as work partners! This is wonderfully written and produced show please hurry so we can see new episodes soon!

  • This show had us sitting on the edge of our seats. We have friends who come over every Sunday night for this show. We don’t know what we are going to do Sunday nights until hopefully- season 3 starts. The last show was beautiful. It was such a shock to see and hear Rosie!!! After wondering what the relationship between her and her parents was like and how she felt about them for 2 seasons- it was teh icing on the cake to have the Larson family close out the season with such good news. It made us cry!! pleeeze..more of this show. It is the best thing on tv.

  • I really want a 3rd. season. I looked forward to each and every episode of season 1 & 2. I enjoyed trying to determine who the killer was.

I’d like the 3rd. season to follow the same format. Make people see if they can pick out the killer.

  • Gosh I seriously hope The Killing gets renewed by AMC for a 3rd season… It’s such a good show. The writing, directing, and especially the acting is so superb to pretty much all other television shows, and it deserves to be renewed.

  • I have never seen a show ignite such passion. I am amazed at how vitriolic the comments are from the people who don’t like The Killing. I for one loved every minute. During the show’s hiatus (fingers crossed) I will watch both seasons several times. Yes, it is that good! Actors, storylines, plot twists, rain and music. They all came together to give us a rarity in today’s television. Something to look forward to each week.

Comment by Christie – June 26, 2012 01:57 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Many of us are in agreement with you, Christie. My only concern with your post is that those who don’t agree probably don’t even know what vitriolic means and would rather spend their time whining about The Killing than actually looking up the meaning of a word they aren’t familiar with. I’ll say it again – this is an extremely intelligent show that probably went over the heads of many viewers who didn’t like it. My guess is that they aren’t the types who care about plot development and character development…just as long as the producers throw a bunch of “way too attractive for real life” detectives and lawyers up on the screen who can catch a seriel killer in a mere three days, and then watch who sleeps with each other after work. Unfortunately, most TV viewers just want to be passively entertained and force-fed all the answers. Personally, I appreciated that The Killing actually made me pay attention to small details, so I was actively watching the show and exercising my brain cells. There aren’t too many opportunities to do that on television.

  • Found this show by accident and I loved it. I couldn’t wait for the next weeks show and who really killed Rosie was a big surprise. I read mystery books with these kinds of twists and turns and most TV shows anymore are written by people with no imagination or they use nudity and sex in place of good writing. Really happy with this show and hope they start again.

  • Three weeks out of the country on a wonderful European holiday, yet frequently looking forward to returning home to catch the last two episodes on DVR. As contrived and convoluted as they were, it was still entertaining television and the main characters are very worthy of more seasons. For those who need cases wrapped up neatly in one episode or season, there are other shows that do that. I appreciate The Killing’s diffferent approach.

Comment by Jim Williams – July 5, 2012 02:29 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I cannot imagine anyone that followed Seasons 1 & 2 would not want a Season 3. It is truly one of the best series to hit TV in a long time. Each week you thought you knew who did it only to realize, ‘well, maybe not’. Edge of the seat writing and performances!!!!

  • Really hope The Killing returns — sooner rather than later. I was mesmerized with both seasons. I love Linden and Holder — their characters’ personalities are unique and very compelling. I felt very sorry for Linden’s son — sure hope she can empathize a little more with his feelings about their “life style.” Know she wants him to be tough and strong like she is, but, the situations he had to go through were horrible. Would sure like to know more about her background. Please bring it back!!

  • I’d watch at least the first episode of a third season…I read another comment that said the show worked as a Joel Kinnaman delivery system and that kind of works for me. My biggest disappointment with the finale of season 2 was the immediate switch for Darren Richmond, to being a sleazy politician. Nothing hinted at that…what, was he possessed by Jamie’s lingering spirit?

Comment by peaceout – July 8, 2012 04:46 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Really? Nothing hinted at the fact that Darren might not be the stand-up guy he presented himself to be to his constituents? What about the dozen or so secret affairs he had with previous campaign workers, a number of whom were married? Or the many call girls he regularly cavorted with on his speed-dial? I’m not a prude, and I believe that unattached consenting adults should be free to do as they wish in the bedroom, as long as no one else is being hurt or negatively impacted as a result. However, if he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong, then why was it all such a huge secret? Because he deliberately intended to separate “Darren the politician” from “Darren the regular guy” to the voters. He was never publicly honest about who he was as a person, until it got down to the wire and he HAD to reveal a potentially ugly truth about himself…but he only did so in the hopes that his suicide revelation would somehow help him win the election through voter sympathy. I never believed him to be the wholesome saint he presented himself to be in public, so I can’t fathom how the little “switcheroo” at the end came as such a shock to you. He did what he set out to do – WIN AN ELECTION – by any means possible. I think there were more hints throughout the two seasons that he was a “sleazy politician” than a murderer. Watch and listen more closely next time.

  • I’d love to see a third season! The main characters appear to be just getting started, and like a good Grisham or Lee Child story format, there is a framework here that appears perfect for a lot of great sequels.

Comment by Denny Haley – July 9, 2012 05:32 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I would really like to see this show continued and I have to be honest that if Holder and Linden don’t come back I will not even bother watching the show anymore. This show was unique in the fact that for once there was something on TV that you could watch that didn’t have Hollywood beauties tearing up in a couple of scenes about a girl we hardly get to know because everything is focused on some stupid love triangle. This was the only crime TV show that didn’t focus on the facts when it comes to murder, it took every emotion you expect to see from a story like this and pulled back layer after layer, showing us not only how the detectives and people working this case are affected, but how the suspects and the family as well as friends of a murder victim feel and how they get over their loss and move on. I also might add that it is some of the best acting I’ve seen on TV in my entire life, and I’m not exaggerating because for a long time all you would find was TV shows that casted some big faces in Hollywood, not bothering to realize if their acting was fit for the role, and let the shows go downhill from there. I adore this show, I think that actors are extraordinary, I think the writers and director are absolutely genius and I think that this show HAS to be renewed or I am boycotting AMC. The Killing breathes life into the TV show industry and I feel like there won’t be anything like it for a long time.

  • I loved the show! It was like a great novel which I wouldn’t want to end as quickly as an episode of law and order, it takes time to build and work into the characters and develop into something more for the viewers. I watched this after both seasons were done so I sat for hours having a hard time stopping. I would watch an episode, like ending a chapter and feel compelled to move on to the next to find out what happens next. It reminded me in that way of a good Agatha Christie novel where you have to wait and see at the end. I would be very sad for this show to stop production for the people who want a more instant satisfaction and resolution, they can watch law and order or one of the many other shows that take only 45 minutes. Cases like this don’t end in 45 minutes so it makes it more realistic to see it more close up. Please make a season 3!

AMC has taken a major turn around in the past five years with several new series all of which are interesting and different. Can’t wait to see more in Season 3 of The Killing.
