What to Watch: 5 Web Series Worth Checking Out

Miss your weekly fix of 30 Rock’s Tina Fey? Have you been hate-watching The Bachelorette? These web series could be the solution to your June TV gloom.

Burning Love | Ken Marino stars as fireman-turned-reality-show-contestant Mark Orlando in a star-studded spot-on spoof of The Bachelor. Backed by Ben Stiller, this reality-TV farce also stars Kristen Bell (House of Lies), Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) and comedian Michael Ian Black. A notable Friends star, one who experienced a very public real-life break-up, makes a cameo in the first episode.

Daybreak | Tim Kring (Heroes) has created a suspenseful, five-episode series that’s loosely connected to his current network series, Touch, by way of a dodecahedron. (Think role-playing dice. No? Google it.) Episodes are directed by 24‘s Jon Cassar and star 90210’s Ryan Eggold and Disturbia’s Sarah Roemer. The plot centers around a global conspiracy that involves the mystical 12-sided shape.

The Flog | If you are having a bad day, just watch Felicia Day (of The Guild) operate heavy machinery with such glee that you will have no choice but to feel better.

7 Minutes in Heaven | Tina Fey does a 1.5-second impression of Sarah Palin and shows us the hand signal for “Lemon, out.”

Sonia’s Travels | The adorably engaging Sonia Gil talks travel. From how to say bonjour correctly to a history lesson about champagne, this show succeeds in being charming and informative.

  1. João Amaral says:

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries – The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modernized adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel, Pride and Prejudice. The story is told primarily through Lizzie Bennet’s Video Diaries, while being supported by her and other characters social media streams.

  2. D'Arcy says:

I gotta check out Burning Love! Seems like a Party Down reunion.

    • Dwigt says:

In addition to the people that were mentioned here (who just have a cameo), you also get Ken Jeong and June Diane Raphael (Ron Donald’s flame in season 2). And, of course, you get a lot of the guys who work on Ken Marino’s other show, Childrens Hospital.

  3. It hasn’t started yet, but I just saw the trailer for the new webseries, “The Inn” with Emma Caulfield, on GeekNation! It looks awesome! They’ve got tons of cool new web shows coming!

  4. mhdream says:

There are a ton of web series without big name stars or known producers. It would be nice if you featured them for a change.

  5. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries are fun. The Guild is also nerdy and hilarious (Felicia Days stars and is creator). Dating Rules from My Future Self was great too.

Jan, which has been promoted constantly on YouTube, is good too. It’s more serious and dramatic than other webseries.

  6. What about Brent Spiner’s “Fresh Hell” series? You don’t need to be a Star Trek fan to watch it, it’s hilarious.

  7. Gina says:

The Daly Show. All the way.

  9. Michael May says:

Definitely recommend “Mermates” – it’s a series a guy who moves in with an everted mermaid (human on the outside, fish organs on the inside). Six episodes in, and they’re doing an Xmas special this summer. Really funny stuff!

Happy to see Daybreak 2012 mentioned. The series is really gripping so far and incredibly well done. I was totally creeped out by the jackboxers and cryptic ad for it during the Touch season finale though! Once I learned what it was, it was all good.

Sonia’s Travels makes me smile each time I watch her vlog! When we travel we always check to see what’s going on in the community we’re staying in and participate. Great way to meet locals, contribute and see new places off the beaten path!
