American Idol Season 11 Finale Recap: And the Winner Is... [Updated]

If the Phillip Phillips-vs.-Jessica Sanchez showdown of American Idol‘s eleventh season was an apples-vs-oranges kind of affair, then tonight’s season finale — featuring the inarguably terrific Top 13 12* — was a weird and occasionally wonderful smorgasbord. (*Uncle Nigel: “Jermaine Jones was just a figment of your imagination!”)

We had Season 3 champ Fantasia Barrino in a Crystal Gayle wig and, um, unfortunate spangled catsuit with side-leg cutouts (!) grabbing Joshua Ledet and turning the Nokia into a beautiful, howling messerie. We had John Fogerty, Reba McEntire, and Jordin Sparks dueting with Season 11 standouts Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine, and Hollie Cavanagh. (More on those performances — including letter grades — a little later in this recap.)

Marriage was “spontaneously” proposed (said spontaneity almost certainly practiced and perfected in the office of Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo’s publicists). The phone book was sung. (Randy Jackson: “Literally!”) Too many medleys robbed us of individual moments for Elise Testone, Erika Van Pelt, Colton Dixon, and Skylar (who should’ve gotten two numbers, no?). And Rihanna and J.Lo showed us exactly why it’s Idol alumni — and not many of today’s “regular” chart-toppers/floor-writhers — who are the go-to candidates when it’s time to belt the National Anthem at the start of most televised sporting events.

And then Jennifer Holliday and Jessica Sanchez tore the face off of music as we know it, flipped it, revesed it, performed an exorcism on it, and made it whole again. Or something insane like that. Mama Holliday scared the tarnation out of me, and I loved it.

I could’ve/should’ve blacked out when the performance was finished, but there was still the matter of crowing the American Idol season 11 champ.

Dim the lights, Kieran! Your new American Idol is…Phillip Phillips! Congrats, sir, and be thankful you got the first decent coronation single in Idol history. There really are no boundaries anymore. Maybe not even at alternative/rock radio? (I know, I know, but I’m an optimist at heart.)

But before we start mullipng P2’s future, let’s review the night’s disparate and many performances:

The Top 12 (minus the Top 2), “Runaway Baby” I can’t lie and say I didn’t like this better when Joshua covered it by his lonesome a few weeks back. (Proof that one voice can be more powerful than 10.) That said, who knew Skylar was so adept at group choreography? And who’d have guessed Mr. Ledet would get his SYTYCD on and wind up falling on his butt? (E for effort, though!) Grade: B-

Phillip Phillips & John Fogerty, “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” I couldn’t not love how genuinely excited Phillip looked sharing the mic with the CCR frontman for this performance, but why cover something P2 already sang just a few weeks ago? It’s not like Uncle Nigel couldn’t shake out the couches in J.Lo’s dressing room and clear a half-dozen new ditties for the finale, right? That feeling of déjá vu, combined with just a slight lag in energy, left me spending too much time focusing on what was around Fogerty’s neck (a black rubber bandana, maybe?) and not enough on the music. Grade: B

Phillip Phillips & John Fogerty, “Bad Moon Rising” Aha, now that was more like it. This swampy stomper fit Phillip’s vibe like a teaspoon fits a jar of peanut butter during midnight snacking hour. And the Phillips-Fogerty chemistry definitely benefitted from having a warmup number, too. I just wish the dudes had made it a trip (that’s a typo for “trio,” but “trip” works fine, too) by waving up Carrie Underwood, who jammed out and sang along from her seat in the audience. Grade: A-

Random observation: Of course Randy yells awful stuff like “Put him in the dumpster!” when he sees a wee thing like Ryan Seacrest get hoisted in the air by a mob of dudes.

Joshua Ledet and Fantasia Barrino, “Take Me to the Pilot” A hot, honeyed catastrophe of straining sequins, frantic camera work (Idol Director: “They’ve gone and left the stage!”) and ridiculous holleration? Or two of the best Idol contestants of all time breaking free from musical convention and letting the Holy Spirit take over? My sane half says the former, but the part of me that lost my damn mind hollering and clapping says the latter, obviously! (Also: Is this song set on an airplane?) Grade: D+/A+

Random observation: My take-home message from that whole “Jimmy Iovine repeatedly referring to J.Lo as ‘Jessica’ during his results-show critique tapings”? Dude’s observations are as carefully groomed and managed as Ryan Seacrest’s eyebrows.

Chaka Khan and the Ladies of the Top 12, “Ain’t Nobody”/”Through the Fire”/”I’m Every Woman” I’m not 100 percent sure the music of Chaka Khan brought out the best in any of the Season 11 chicas — though Elise sounded surprisingly solid growling it up on that disco nugget “Ain’t Nobody.” It’s also a shame that Chaka didn’t take notes from John Fogerty/Jennifer Holliday/Reba McEntire about how to engage with the Idols — namely, don’t treat them like underpaid backup singers. They’re the ones pulling in 20 million viewers, after all. Then again, maybe Chaka couldn’t see over her breasts? File under: #PantsuitFail Grade: C

Rihanna, “Where Have You Been” She hasn’t been going to her vocal lessons, that’s one place she hasn’t been. This was all writhing bodies and Egyptian-themed set pieces and pre-recorded vocals, signifying that there’s something really wrong with how we’re choosing our hitmakers nowadays. Grade: D

Skylar Laine & Reba McEntire, “Turn on the Radio” The camera work and sound mix on this performance malfunctioned harder than Fantasia’s stylist. But dangit all, Skylar and Reba’s pumped-up pipes and effervescent stage presence turned it into one of the night’s most enjoyable moments. It’s amazing that a teenager who just finished fifth on a televised singing competition can hold her own — without the slightest bit of awkwardness or trepidation — opposite one of the true legends of country music. Prediction: In five years’ time, Skylar will have sold more records than anyone from Season 11. (Which is not a knock on any of the contestants of Season 11. Skylar’s just gonna sell a lot of records.) Grade: A-

Random observation: Tell me I’m not the only one who half-gagged at that “two become one” image of Steven Tyler embracing a live sloth.

Jessica Sanchez, “I Will Always Love You” Nigel Lythgoe, seriously, clear more songs for these kids! Jessica sounded as powerful and potent as ever on this encore presentation of her Top 13 Week number, but right down to her blue ballgown, all the details were exactly the same. I mean, why buy the Idol Season Finale when you can get the milk for free on YouTube, if that makes any sense? Grade: B+

Neil Diamond and the Top 12 guys (minus Phillip), “America”/”Cracklin Rosie”/”I’m a Believer” True confession: I don’t care for medleys in general. And I especially didn’t care for this medley in particular. Which is not to say that everything in life needs to play to the 18-34 demographic — otherwise you might as well take me out to the field with a fresh-baked Cinnabon and a blunt object — but everybody involved seemed like they would’ve been more excited to get their hands caught in the door of Jessica’s new Ford whateverthatcarwas. Grade: C

Idol Top 10 (minus the Top 2), “Sing the Phone Book,” A brutal skewering of Randy Jackson’s turgid critiques is always appreciated. But the closing bit of this number — with Joshua getting carried away in a fit of Gospel showboating, and his fellow Idols giving him the exhausted side eye — was a hilarious bit of self-deprecating humor from Season 11’s third-place finisher. Grade: A-

J.Lo and Some People Who Flew in On Pogo Sticks of the Future, “A ‘song’ from a new Step Up movie not starring Channing Tatum and his meaty brand of hotness”/”And also another ‘song'” Ooh, her lipsynch game is as tight as…actually, her pants were shockingly baggy this time around, no? Grade: Girl, don’t you make enough money from Idol and movies and all your product endorsements that you can stop pretending to be a singer now? (J.Lo: “Enough. A 2002 thriller starring yours truly and that dude from The Killing. Get it on Blu-Ray today on Amazon.com for $14.99.”)

Random observation: WHAT IF ACE YOUNG’S HAIR AND DIANA DEGARMO’S BANGS HAVE A BABY TOGETHER?

Hollie Cavanagh and Jordin Sparks, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” Perhaps not the most inventive, unexpected performance in Idol finale history, but sometimes isn’t it enough to have two lovely ladies belting a ballad with charm and style to spare? Why yes, sometimes it is! Grade: B+

Top 12 guys (minus Phillip), Bee Gees medley Yikes. Nobody told me When Harmonies Attack was returning to the Fox lineup. (That said, Joshua’s “To Love Somebody” kinda rescued the medley, even if it was yet another retread from earlier in the season.) Grade: C

Jessica Sanchez and Jennifer Holliday, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” Holy face-pulling, Batman! La Holliday’s expressions ping-ponged from rage to elation to suspicion to defiance and all the way to “SAAAANG HEFFFUH!” — and I could not get enough. If Steven Tyler needs someone to help him understand the meaning of “over the top,” the search is finished. I loved how the original Broadway Dreamgirl shook and cajoled Jessica using only her eyes and her powerhouse vocal, somehow managing to get the Season 11 finalist to dig even deeper into her reserves of soulful growl, and counter with what’s likely the performance of her young lifetime. Jessica may not have won the title of American Idol, but as far as I’m concerned this duet was the telecast’s biggest prize, one of the all-time great moments this show has ever given us. The end. Grade: A++

Jessica & Phillip, “Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong” A sweet little interlude to take us past 10:00 pm, and thereby cut into Idoloonies’ Revenge time (over on ABC). No, I’m not sure why Jessica wore violet curtains, or why Phillip couldn’t be bothered to wear a dress shirt underneath his tux, but I’ve seen a lot worse outfits on the Idol stage and in my own closet, so lemme just shut my pie hole. Grade: A-

Phillip, “Home” Whether or not you voted for the 21-year-old pawn-shop worker, it was hard not to get a little choked up watching him try (then fail) to get through his lilting coronation single. Because regardless of race, gender, or musical style, at the end of the Idol season, these three things must remain: Hugs, confetti, and tears. But the greatest of these is tears. So thank you, Phillip Phillips for doing your championly duty, and best of luck on the charts! Grade: A

And with that, I thank all of you for joining me for another “Idol journey.” But remember: It’s not over yet! I’ll have an interview with executive producer Nigel Lythgoe posting here at TVLine on Thursday, Idology interviews with the Top 5 contestants running over the next couple weeks, and plenty of galleries and post-season goodies comin’ ‘atcha, too.

So with that, I turn things over to you: What did you think of the final two hours of Season 11? What were your favorite performances? What do you think of Phillip’s win? And was the J.Holl duet a good enough consolation prize for Jessica? It’s not racism when it’s true.

Stay out of the intense fight. It’s not worth it.

          • Jake says:

Hearing Jessica sing next to Jennifer Holliday, it was clear that so much of her enunciation, phrasing and approaches to notes are direct copies of the original artists. All her Whitney covers clearly point to that, even her performance of the Beyonce’s Sweet Dream was a note-for-note recreation of something that Beyonce does in concert. Any time she strays from the original or is doing something that we havent heard before (like last night’s original song), her voice waivers and doesn’t quite know what to do…look I think she is the best singer this show has seen since Carrie, but Jessica’s talent is largely driven by her mimicry of original artists….PS, not a Phil lover either, but it seemed he was always trying to do his own thing

          • Edward says:

You have to understand that no artists has a particular ownership of one style so just bcuz you’ve heard somebody growl then you automatically assume somebody is imitating another artists.Jessica is not mimicking anybody that’s her style of performing and singing. That’s why she chooses songs like And I am telling You because it fits her perfectly.

          • Kellen says:

Agreed. It is racism both ways people. He wins because he’s white. She loses because she’s Phillipino/Hispanic. There is no racism in the fact that both are talented! It is still voted on by the public and there is no way it won’t be a popularity contest at SOME point. It’s flawed. However, I will say this…Phillip found a way to make each song his own. He worked a lot of his own arrangements, and he does have charisma which is really hard to come by. Is he a better singer? No I can’t think of a single person who is being honest that wouldn’t agree Jessica can sing like nobody’s business. But, it is not as so many people want to believe simply a singing contest. Personality does factor in here no matter how much you all think it shouldn’t. Think about some of the greats in the industry in several genres…Beyonce, Dave Matthews, Mariah, Michael Jackson, Tim McGraw, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Elton John, James Brown. Across any genre, any era these artists brought a personality and swagger to their performances that Phillip has. Like it or not his unaffected take it or leave it attitude makes him unique and the fact that he can translate most songs into something that fits him as an artist also makes him stand out. Joshua I felt was capable of the same. I know that Jessica will have two things…a recording contract within days (if not sooner) and time to evolve her personality which I think lacked a bit in that she has been so secluded from a normal life. She is 16 in one of the largest spotlights in America, She did amazing! And she will do great things. For me, I vote for the person I’d most like to listen to, pay for their album and await their original material. I LOVED Stuttering, which ironically got panned and almost sent her home. I thought it was PERFECT. Some of her other songs are simply not my kind of music. I am a southern rock/country kind of girl (FYI, I did not favor Scotty last year before you say I only want cute boys…I backed Haley and Lauren) so Joshua and Jessica were not my pick, Phillip had me at Thriller. And that was confirmed with In the Air Tonight, U Got it Bad, We’ve Got tonight and ultimately Home. Jessica got saddled with some of the worst finale song picks and Phillip got some of the best. But at the end of the day, they BOTH won, she just didn’t have to choke on confetti. When all is said and done, the right 3 people made it to the end. I also was a big fan of Elise Testone, though I knew Idol fans wouldn’t keep her around as long. Why??? I don’t know. I thought she had a lot of character to her voice and I hope that she gets a contract, too. This season had some of the best talent for sure.

          • FreeHaley says:

One advantage to the guys is the take it or leave it attitude gets applause for Phillip but hate for the females such as Elise, then they are know it all Bs who think they are too good or whatever.

          • whoami says:

@Jake – you are right. Jessica did a note-perfect job of imitating Buddy Holly on the “Doesn’t Matter Anymore” song, and you couldn’t tell Jessica and Billy Joel apart on “Everybody Has a Dream”. And without a role model to mimic, she did such an unsure job tripping herself up on those 2 songs that those are by and large considered to be 2 of her best performances on Idol.

How about “Change Nothing” was such a craptastic song (plus she only had 1 day to learn it) that, just like “No Boundaries”, no one was going to tackle that beast successfully. Just like “No Boundaries” was purportedly written for Danny Gokey, I’m guessing that “Change Nothing” might have been written with Hollie in mind. But then, no, it’s just too wordy a song with too many notes all over the place.

          • aravis says:

whoami, you’re so right! Those who keep accusing Jessica of being a mere mimic and not being able to sing songs on her own MUST listen again to “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” and “Everybody Has a Dream”. I dare them to repeat that statement!

        • really? says:

So when we say another black guy committing a crime is that racist?

        • Emily says:

          nope still racism.

          • gailer says:

Having a preference for music isn’t racism. Hatred against people is racism.

          • Emily says:

Exactly, gailer, everyone one here is hating on Phillip for winning because he is another white guy. Therefore, hatred against people.

          • (Another) Emily says:

Oh please. What about the constant ranting about illegal Filipino votes for Jessica? There are plenty of accusations to go around. WGWG is like generalizing black women with powerhouse vocals. If you really care to make a difference against racism, pick something that actually matters.

          • LaCota says:

            Randy Jackson promotes ethnic causes!

          • smidnite says:

OK, so if the first non WGWG winner is a White girl will that be racist? Or if it’s a non-White boy will that be sexist?

        • Bob says:

Truth hurts. You can’t handle the truth!

        • Michael says:

Every racist thinks their views are true.

        • sdbolt says:

There’s no racism. The problem is simple: the people who vote the most are horny teenie boppers and cougars, particularly those who live in the south, where there’s not much else to do. So, of course, they pick the good-looking guy with the guitar (remember in middle school and high school when girls used to think guys who played the guitar were irresistible?). If only these girls would just google “hot guys” instead of messing with people’s careers…

        • Common sense says:

The only thing that is true is that you’re an idiot. Screaming church singers and yet (snore) another teenage girl with a big voice is not going to sell out arenas. Philip will. Just because you are a mindless moron with only one taste in music doesn’t make the show racist. I saw a few other Idol winners on stage that weren’t white dumb@#S

      • Rollin'Stoned says:

How is tellin’ it like it is racist?

      • ejones says:

The white guy bit is probably true as, like Scottie, this title was won during the auditions not by his ability with the guitar or the quality of his singing but by his popularity as a person.

        • MIchael says:

THat’s why all future male contestants should be ugly. The teen girls will stay away and all will be right with the world.

          • Snsetblaze says:

How about all contestants being ugly, not just guys.

          • Fernando says:

which guys last year were so hot women/girls couldn’t contain themselves? Casey? Durbin? Scotty? Jacob? Surely you are kidding.

          • JC says:

@Fernando I’m sure a lot of women would disagree with you. Scotty is pretty that is why he won that’s the only explanation :)

      • TC says:

are you for real or you a stupid as your cousin Forrest??

      • Tommyo2000 says:

You should learn the difference between racism and bigotry… Maybe you would stop calling people that then…

      • Sean D says:

You can’t be racist against white people. Fact. Racism is discrimination to bolster an existing system of inequality….there’s no existing system of inequality against white men.

        • Miss Otis Regrets... says:

Racism is racism. Did Martin Luther King say you shouldn’t be judged by the color of your skin but it’s okay if you are white? No he didn’t. So judging Phillip solely by his color and sex is WRONG.

          • ben says:

Unfortunately, thats exactly what american idol voters do, patently.

          • I think its kind of foolish to cry racism. The fact is that the last five winners (David, Kris, Lee, Scotty, and now Phillip) have been white dudes; furthermore, with the exception of Scotty, all of these guys sing the same type of music. I think it makes complete sense that the public is getting furstrated…they don’t hate Phillip because he’s a white male, they simply don’t like that he’s another white dude who beat out many other viable contenders. They aren’t mad at the contestant, they’re angry at the system.

          • Marsaili says:

            David Cook–rock
            Kris Allen–adult contemporary
            Lee Dewyze–folk
            Scotty McCreery—country
            Phillip–bluesy, southern rock

Nope, they aren’t the same at all. I wish they WERE angry at the system—stick around here long enough, you’ll see near constant hate directed towards all the guys with guitars. It’s ridiculous!

          • FreeHaley says:

Between the last 8 seasons of AI, The Voice and XFactor there has been 1 female and 7 guy winners unless the girls are really THAT much worse it is beginning to seem like the deck is stack against them.

          • Marsaili says:

I honestly don’t think it’s about sex or race—I think it’s about musical preference. Rock and Roll is more popular than R&B and big diva ballads—and those are the types of music that girls on these shows typically sing—they aren’t going to win because most people will prefer a guy singing with a guitar to a girl doing crazy runs all over the place. Those types of songs are awesome, in small doses. I love Mariah, but I prefer her pop songs to her big diva ballads—but I prefer rock and roll to any of it. After seeing Jennifer Holliday tonight, I could barely survive one of her songs if that is how she sings all the time—and i think the general consensus would agree. THAT is why guys with guitars are winning—a good rock song with some wicked guitar can always be listened to!

          • @marsalili I excused Scotty from the list when I comprised the type of music, but I’m sorry, no Kris, David, Lee and I’ll bet Phillip aren’t that different at the end of the day. They’re musical genres are a lot closer than the nay-sayers are trying to make them come off. Simply looking back at the last few years you can’t deny there is a clear problem; guys, generally white musicians, have been fairing better in public votes, while it does seem that anyone (including white females, so I don’t think its a race problem) struggles to catch America’s hearts. I think the post-careers of most of these guys says it all…you can argue that they deserved to win, but their careers since leaving the show haven’t been stellar.

          • tarc says:

Damien- their genres are nothing alike. You need to work on your ear for music.

          • just saying says:

Marsaili, not everyone likes rock music, just like not everyone likes R&B or country. And some people have the ability to (shocker) appreciate music in general! I, personally, can like one genre of music wiithout putting another down. I can also like a genre of music without thinking that just because someone sings that type of music that they should win a “talent” competition. Look, i called Phillip winning 10 weeks ago and suspected it would happen during Hollywood week. And I don’t begrudge him the win. I’m a huge fan of DMB as obviously he is. But what bothers me is people who say he’s a true artist and such an original compared to the others (and especially Jessica). But he’s really not. When your mantra for singing is WWDMD (What would Dave Matthews Do), you’re not being original. Just because a majority of idol watchers haven’t heard this type of music, THAT’s why people are saying it’s so original. If it floats your boat, that’s one thing. But while I dug Phillip at first, he stalled out very quickly for me as he seemed to not even be trying that hard. Based on THAT, he shouldn’t have made it as far as he did. But he really stepped it up the last few weeks and once he put effort in, there were few enough people in the “rock” genre to challenge him. And more Idol viewers are probably more into pop/rock music than r&b/soul/country. Frankly, I was surprised Skylar didn’t make it to the finals due to the fact that we’ve seen the power of the country voting block in past seasons. I’m guessing this is a backlash to having so many country winners win, and the fact that the final two last year were BOTH country singers. Personally, if i were a voter, i would NOT vote on whose album i’d listen to more, but to who had the best voice. But everyone has different criteria and since i don’t waste my time voting on this crap, i’m not complaining about who won.

          • Marsaili says:

@just saying First—the whole “Phillip is a clone of Dave Matthews” has been proven wrong—weeks ago. He has shown in the last few weeks that he is certainly his own artist and the fact that you keep bringing the Dave Matthews thing up shows your inability to judge him fairly. I never said everyone likes rock music, I said Rock music is MORE popular than R&B and as a general consensus, America as a whole (as far as Idol voters go) PREFERs rock and roll over big diva ballads, taking it to church or even jazz—it’s been proven 5 times in a row. So, again, my point is that this isn’t about race or sex, it’s about the TYPE of music these winners are playing–and with the exception of Scotty—who can rock but is solidly a country artist—America prefers rock and roll and that is why Phillip won over Jessica. Pure and simple.

          • FreeHaley says:

Hmm then why did Juliette sims, rocker, lose to pop/R&B GUY Jermaine, who barely even got mentioned in forums or pundit polls?

          • tarc says:

That’s a real mystery considering that Jermaine has one of the wrost voices I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing. Nails on a chalkboard is more pleasant. (And I was raised on Motwon and R&B, so that’s not it at all – his voice is horrible). Come to think of it, maybe the Voice is fixed. Then again, the whole selection process after the blind auditions is terrible.

        • justafan says:

might want to check the definition ,,,here it is
: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

        • Gisele Glen says:

did u seriously just say you can not be racist against white people??? I’m black and I know that’s wrong

          • It is not racist when we challenge whites and the structural racism caused by white supremacy. The unfair advantages that whites have over other minorities. Racism is all about power and whites have all the power. This is a fact.. It is built into the social structures of America and that is why we get results like this.

          • deedee says:

Agree, Fmon — I studied this stuff in university for years – structural power imbalances and invisible/not-so-invisible societal privileges, blah blah … and the idea of “racism” against white people is ludicrous and insulting to people who actually did suffer brutality because of their race. Racism is about power – nothing else. Crying racism against a privileged white male is like crying “ABUSE!” when a 6 year old kid hits a grown-ass NFL player.

        • realitycheck says:

That’s an awfully convenient definition of racism.

          • 5talentgirl says:

            @FMon
Your definition does NOT play out in reality. Whites obviously do not ‘have all the power’ – it totally depends on a given situation. If you are the only white/Black person/Asian etc in a given situation, then it iss lil=kely that the majority have the power in that particular microcosm. So yeah, racism can exist from any individual/’majority’ who judge another (infavourably) solely due to the colour of their skin or due to (inaccurate/impersonal) stereotypes.

      • stacy says:

no, the fans who can’t seem to vote for a minoriy are racist.

        • Hannah says:

Because 2/3 of the top three weren’t minorities. Philip won because Jessica is too young. She doesn’t know who she is as an artist yet, which was clearly displayed in her original song. If Philip was asked to sing a song that he didn’t think was right for him he’d fight against it. Jessica did not do that, she let herself sing a song she even said wasn’t right after hearing the critiques of the judges. She needs to grow and be more than just a voice.

          • Idol says:

            AMEN to that!

          • M says:

Right! I was definitely rooting for Jessica, but she lost as soon as she chose her original song. Of the five minorities that were in the top twelve, two of them made it to the top three, and the top five consisted of three girls and two guys. Racism and sexism had nothing to do with it. Voting against Phil because he’s a white guy would be both racist and sexist, however.

          • Jeanne says:

Philip won because Jessica was signed the night before by Tommy Mottola who launched Mariah and many other greats., She didn’t need the win. And as far as people that keep saying she mimics other people. David Foster great producer once said “Artists that can mimic other artists are considered GREAT SINGERS” Not many people can do that especially Mariah, Celine or Whitney. In the end the pattern of American Idol from what I have been seeing is…Taylor Hicks dropped from label, David Cook dropped from label, Lee DeWyze dropped from label. Adam Lambert came in second due to sexuality. Very evident with him having over 1 million followers and Kris Allen 658,000. Adam nominated for Grammy last year Adam in #1 Billboard spot for top 200 Albums as of yesterday that he was clearly the winner. Clay Aiken coming in second due to sexuality. As for the WGWG scenario, it’s the 17 or younger girls that are voting for these guys (my 17 yr old daughter said ALL the girls at her HS voted for him). I think to make things fair American Idol should change their voting and make it one vote per IP address…forget the texting or calling or voting numerous times for 4 hours. What is the purpose of that? To see what army of voters can prevail?it’s the same people over and over voting for hours…. not different people to get a true count. And then we have votefortheworst.com who has an army of people voting for the worst singer or whom they think is the worst singer to make them the winner. Their goal as clearly stated on their site is WGWG and this year their campaign WGWG5 which means the 5th one to win in a row. Next year they plan on getting WGWG6 for the win. Check them out you will be surprised what actually goes on with voting. You can’t vote for the president 132 million times. Let’s make it a fair win….. one vote per person!

          • Marsaili says:

Vote for the Worst hasn’t had any affect on Idol in years.

          • SanDiegoCat says:

I completely agree, Hannah. I’m not sure why Jessica is in such a hurry to get to superstardom, auditioning for America’s Got Talent at 11 and American Idol at 16. She’s got one of the most amazing voices ever on Idol, but she’s still in the “copying other great singers” mode, which is a great way for young singers to learn their craft, but not a way to establish yourself as an artist. If they had each waited a couple of years, we might have had an amazing Hollie/Jessica finale, with two women who really know who they are as singers.

As it is, I think the right person won. I love Phillip’s sound and will buy his album. I hope everybody who voted for him remembers to buy his music or he will end up like the amazing David Cook, who has been dropped from his label. Such a shame.

          • millie says:

Joshua was my favorite, so didn’t care who won last night, although I thought they were both fine. I am an older white conservative woman who voted for Joshua all season. I thought he was the best performer and really enjoyed hearing and seeing him and would buy his music. So just judging by myself I don’t really think that a large degree of racism affected the outcome. Here’s two things.

First, last year was the finale that had the lowest amount of people watching and this year was down 25% over that. But they say there were 132 million votes cast, the most ever by far. It seems that a very small amount of people power voting are controlling the result. If I really like someone, I’ll vote maybe 5 times, teenage girls will vote til their fingers fall off. They need to limit the amount of votes per person a la Dancing with the Stars in future. Although Phillip was a worthy winner, it doesn’t always work out that way. And it also makes viewers like me less interested because my few votes don’t count.

Second, something Jessica said made me realize why she couldn’t win. When they asked why she picked a certain song she said it was because she thought it would show off her voice. In order to really touch people and make them feel something, it needs to be more for the singer than vocal acrobatics. They need to make a connection with the lyrics and feel it. That’s how they make you feel it. The kinds of big ballads she usually picked pretty much required that. She definitely needs more life experience and to actually pick songs that resonate for her in a way that’s about more than showing what her voice can do.

          • Marsaili says:

No, Jeanne, Jessica was not signed the night before—Phillip WON because America preferred his music to Jessica’s—and because he knows who he is as an artist and can make wise choices and decisions based on that—Jessica is not able to do that yet. As for the rest of what you said—blah, blah, blah—you are another person who really doesn’t know crap—very little of what you said is true. Period.

        • Lilly says:

I am white, and my favorite was Joshua. My all-time favorite Idol is Mandisa. I buy her music. I don’t vote, because the show is on too late.

          • Chris says:

I’m a white 42 year old from the Northeast and LOVED Joshua and voted ONLY for Joshua. I don’t pay attention to age, race, sex when deciding who I like. I simply watch and listen and then decide

          • Ella says:

That’s why I think so many of the second and third place finishers do better. I know of others who like Joshua but didn’t vote.

      • Yo' says:

People crying racism constantly do irreparable damage to race relations. I haven’t heard so much yelling since busing in the Seventies. You really can not accuse every time a favorite does not win a contest; the voters are a broad sampling of middle America. And you need to note that the top five was a pretty broad sampling of races and genders. The same broad sampling of America elected a black man president four years ago. The problem with constantly accusing is that it aggravates the very problem you accuse the country of.

        • chistosa says:

Yo, I agree with you. There was no racism involved. Actually I would take a further step and say that AI voters are quite liberal where race is involved. Once the voting rounds began, Jeremy Rosado was eliminated but one by one, week after week, it was a white competitor that went home. This resulted in a top three of 3 different races. How is that racist? If voters were racist there would have been 3 white singers going on home visits. But only one of these three could win. Personally I was a Joshua fan and I wish he had gone all the way but the truth be told, once we got to the top 3 any one of them could have won and it would not have been undeserved.

        • deedee says:

Thank you. And it also waters down a *real* racial issue, when crying “racism” might be truly warranted. You can’t use the race card when two “minority” contestants beat out several of their white competitors.

      • Mcjagger says:

Acknowledging that there is bias for cute (white) guys by the Idol voting public is NOT racism.

IMO if there was a Freaky Friday body switch between PP and William Hung, I don’t think the WH verison of PP would have won.

Cuteness/hotness can be worth a few extra weeks on Idol. Ahem, Tim Urban, Haley Scarnato, etc.

    • Stephanie says:

Let the backlash commence, I don’t know if a girl will ever win this thing again at this rate

      • Templar says:

It won’t change unless they limit the voting policy, which I’ve been screaming about for years.

        • realitycheck says:

I agree. The results have nothing to do with racism and everything to do with which fans are willing to vote non-stop throughout the voting time. Limiting the number of votes would remove this issue. also, it’s not like each vote = a record sale. You only buy a record once, so I am not sure that crowning the person with the most fans that are willing to waste 2 hours weekly voting, is any indication of post idol success. There are no voting limits, because producers want to brag about the voting numbers.. I don’t think they are concerned with crowning the contestant that is most likely to succeed..

          • Kellen says:

I doubt they’ll give up the voting as is. it is good for them to say they had 132 million votes. But, I do think they should factor in single sales on itunes throughout the season. One it would give them a better idea of what people might want to buy, and two it would give the producers, performers and everyone a boost to really seek out the right songs and not go with the safe bet. I don’t think it would be fair to give that 100% of the vote, but I do think it would give them a more realistic view on what people will pay for once the season ends. I know they probably hesitate to do it since the Voice did it first, but it should be considered. Also, look at the charts on itunes. Phillip has the number one single and the number 3 album (AI season 11 album for Phillip). Jessica didn’t even make it to the top 200 singles and her album is sitting in the 28th spot. I hope they are both successful. I don’t think per regulations she could have signed with Mottola before today, but I suspect it is only a matter of time til Jessica is also signed and she will be successful no doubt, but I think Phillip has a broader appeal as an artist right now. He is not the best singer, and he owns that he hasn’t tried to pretend he can out sing Jessica…but, he has a presence and a solid identity that is and has been throughout the season his own and if he can carry that forward into his first album I think he may just prove that judgements have been made too soon. He has character and he seems to understand what he wants for his career, I hope he is given the freedom to run with that. Congrats to both artists and look forward to seeing where they go from here.

Congrats to Philip! Hope the Idols get good songs on their records.

        • nchamlong2 says:

Yes – they should do something like DWTS and limit the number of votes for a person to so many per phone line, text message or online. Sure it won’t sound as impressive as saying “after 53 hundred thousand million votes,” but it would at least bring some credibility back to the show!

      • SallyinChicago says:

It’s not worth watching if every freaking year a WGWG will win.

        • gregk says:

Right on, and the worst part was that my wife never could get even a single vote for Jessica using a landline during the entire four hours on any of the four numbers!!! How many other voters could not get through this way (I was able to use my cell phone but what if a lot of voters could not use one). Not going to watch again if the voting process is unfair and skewed towards texters and online voters.

      • ben says:

The backlash DID commence. Look at idol’s ratings. They will take another hit next year. Everyone is sick of the fact that only one particular type of singer can win. It’s a waste of everyones time watching, why not crown the winner in week one?

        • FreeHaley says:

May as well. We all know they already crowned the top two before Hollywood rounds last season (even,if perhaps, the final order of those two was reverse of script, perhaps).

        • CAM says:

Idol’s ratings may be down in comparison to the number of viewers in the past, but both nights are still consistently in the top 3-4 programs every week. In other words, they are still going strong.

        • chastity fudge says:

It doesn’t help that when PP butchered a song, the judges would still fawn over him and he would never even hit the bottom three. It’s a bit riduculous. It doesn’t help him as an artist, and it only infuriates viewers.

        • chistosa says:

The ratings may be slipping from year to year but it is still one of most highly rated shows on tv. I would not be so quick to blame the lower ratings on who is winning. There are more reality competition shows on now than when Idol began. They were up against two of them. But they still have much higher ratings than any of their competitors. It is not a logical jump to blame it on who wins. There is absolutely no data anywhere to support that hypothesis. Surely you can have an opinion but it is just that without supporting data.

      • smidnite says:

When the right girl comes along she will win; but she’ll have to be on the level of Kelly, Carrie or Jordin.

        • Music says:

and the difference between them and Jessica is they had personality and most of all, experience (yes including Jordinwho was only 17)

          • Suggestor says:

Jessica had a lot of personality, she just didn’t cheese it up for the cameras. She also had to work on school. Check out her post Idol interview with Ryan on youtube and you’ll see her unedited by the Idol machine. Much more open and had lots of things to say. Reality shows can edit and make you appear however they want to portray you.

        • I thought Skylar was worth of being this years Idol , its just a shame the judges gave here ZERO support.

        • FreeHaley says:

No because then they will bus her. Witness Haley who shoulda won last year running without question. (or even this year with Elise a bit or even Jessica)

          • lydiakj says:

Crystal is a perfect example of this.

          • noa says:

@lydiakj- you are so right! Elise is by far my favorite idol ever, but i know that season 11 was packed with great talent from different styles. season 9 on the other hand, had mostly mediocare to bad contestants with only Crystal being consistently great. Lee has his moments, sure. but there’s no way anyone that year was better than mamasox. last year- i have no idea what went on last year. nothing bothers me more about it than Jacob making it to top 5. i loved Haley, and she was by far my favorite, but she had the entire production going against her. you can’t say the same about Crystal or Jessica. i like Phillip a lot, so this isn’t about him winning. but it does seem weird that it’s been 5 years since a woman won, when they’ve had amazing women throughout these seasons.

          • Justice says:

and how successful has haley been? I’m pretty sure last years winner is way ahead of her when it comes to success..everyones made because a girl didn’t win well if they would prove to be more successful maybe they would..I mean since Jordin Sparks won in season 6 can you tell me any of the girls in the past 5 seasons who have done better than their idol winners? It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose it thats not what makes you successful, your like-ability and your style of music is what makes you successful.

          • noa says:

@Justice it’s a little early to tell about season 10. Haley’s album just came out but i’ve heard a little of it and it sounds great, so maybe she WILL do better than Scotty. Crystal sold more CDs than Lee. and those are the girls i thought really should have won their seasons but didn’t. as for this year- time will tell. but i have a feeling Elise will release an album of classic unbelievably great music. I also have a good feeling about Hollie. though not my favorite, she was still pretty good, and the one with the most learning still left to do. if a good manager and producer take her on, she could have a great career in pop music. although, i kind of want her to go to college. let them all go to college! :)

        • Andy J says:

I think Hollie should have been this year’s Idol-she has the best voice of the top 12-but she was thrown under the bus by the judges and Jimmy.

If Katherine McPhee, who is fabulous on Smash, could not win over Taylor Hicks then what chance does a girl stand?

          • chistosa says:

She is fabulous on Smash years after her stint on Idol. She has had years to polish her performance and stage presence. Your argument is invalid. Jennifer Hudson could not sell anything for years and look at her now, a Grammy winner, and Oscar winner. Experience is a great equalizer.

          • Mary B says:

Yet, she did not set the world on fire after Idol. She really did not do great with her albums but now she is on the show which is great because I really like her and voted for her when she was on idol.

          • MusicGrrrl says:

Did you watch her on Idol?!? The last few weeks, she would go from great performance to absolutely horrible performance. I mean not even top 24 worthy. I don’t know what happened in the course of the competition, but she became very uneven performance wise. And what made it worse was that she was personally unlikable. She would insult the other contestant. She called Elliott Yamin an ugly little troll, and wasn’t kidding. Hers was the only season when the other contestants (not in the finale) said who they were voting for, and they ALL said Taylor. Most seasons, they try to be nice and say “They’re both good.”

        • wp says:

I refuse to believe that. Viewers are just “viewers” especially those screaming teenage girls. They don’t see thru the music. They only look at the male contestant’s stares, smiles, and crotches

WGWG winning for upteenth time? I’m with you. Meh.

      • Yeah, I mean if Phillip, who was sick and near-death, and at the best of times can barely stay on tune, can beat two of the best vocalists the show has ever seen in Jessica and Joshua, what is the point of watching? You just know the hillbilly inbred’s are going to vote for their WGWG at the end of the day, no matter if they are terribad or not.

        • MamaLis says:

Heyskittlepunk. Did you just take a shot at hillbillys, then use the word: “terribad?”

Hey Punkskittle. You’ve been pissing me off and offending just about everybody here for weeks now. Not just because of your unintelligent comments, but also because of your abysmal English language skills. For example, there is no reason to make the noun “inbreds” into a possessive, when all you’re trying to do is pluralize it. Pluralizing something does not require an apostrophe — but maybe you were sick for that lesson in 4th grade. Seriously, a broad education will get you a lot further in life than online semi-literacy — especially when you’re trying so hard to distance yourself from the “hillbilly inbred’s” you have so much disdain for.

AI and its publicist might have tried to push this to the forefront of the public’s mind but Phillip NEVER participated in such shenanigans. I’ve seen some interviews where his medical condition was brought up but he never played it up. Shame on you for trying to malign his character.

          • Marianne says:

“..but Phillip NEVER participated in such shenanigans.” – – he also never participated in Ford videos, and Ford still gave him and his bro-in-law cars! Wasn’t that nice. It’s just another reason why I think it was determined from the start. Though he, himself, never outright complained, I feel like he was coddled. I would have to think the Ford videos are in their (Idol contestants) contracts. We’ll see how he does post-Idol. At least he’s not as bad (I think?) as Lee Dewyze.

Leila, you have to stop using the tabloids for your source of information. Did you even watch this season? Not once did he mention pain or kidney stones. Nor did anyone else. You should be ashamed to state something that has no truth.

Obviously it’s a popularity contest the people vote for their favorite, duh. American Idol never claimed to be just a “Talent” competition, they want the whole package not just someone who can stand on a stage and look and sound pretty. I mean come on there are a lot of singers on the radio who are only talented when they are auto tuned, yet they still put out #1 singles. Anyone who is famous is famous because they are popular. I’m sick of people complaining that a girl never wins only cute guys well all of you who want a girl to win are capable of voting too ya know and I’m sure there are just as many of you as there are of teenage girls that you claim power vote..

        • Name That Tune says:

Do you realize that only 14 million people watched last night & there were 132 million votes? I’m pretty good with my Smart phone & in 4 hours the best I can do is 10,000 votes. I guarantee that ain’t gonna put a noticeable dent in 132 million. Ineed 99 friends doing the same thing to deliver 1 million votes which would have an impact.

          • Idol says:

well then the same goes for phillip voters the best each of them can do is 10,000 votes then thats not gonna put a noticeable dent either, so once again don’t complain about power voters. Especially since Phillip has almost 100,000 followers on twitter less than Jessica so obviously she had some fans that failed to vote (and no, not failed to power vote just plain vote).

          • Sheena says:

Most of Jessica’s twitter followers I may say are Filipinos like me we make the 50% of her followers so Phillip is really the most followed one by the ones that vote

          • Yo' says:

Anyone who votes constantly for two to four hours is an irrelevant and unique subset of the population. I can’t imagine doing it. Whether this subset is representative of the population is up for grabs; we simply will never know until and unless the voting is changed. People motivated to vote that long, just like people who post on line about the show, may be unusually invested in the show and/or television.

          • Name That Tune says:

Yo, it also means that a very small number of people can make a big dent in the results – 100 people. It’s hilarious just how meaningless voting is.

          • 5talentgirl says:

Are you guys crazy? At 10,000 votes each, you only need 13,200 voters to reach 132million votes! How is that representative of the 14mill idol watchers or the general American public??

If just 7,000 power voters totted up 70m votes between them- and they all voted for Phil Phillips – even if 60million people voted for Jessica, but once only, then Phil would still have won! The voting system is just crazy, stupid and a totally unreliable indicator of actual popularity – meaning the number of the populous who like something. Skewed voting = skewed results. And…Phil is not really a worthy winner, though I like him, he just doesn’t sing to a very high standard, bar a few performances. The finale was an embarrassment. the production awful. I hated the whole thing..

        • Ray says:

I agree with much of what you say. If those who wanted a girl to win should have voted for Elise or Skylar, both who are better performers than Jessica. Another thought is put the age back up to where it was before. I wanted a girl to win, until Elise and Skylar were eliminated. I would up
voting for Phillip after the finale.

          • Andy J says:

Hollie should have won; she had the best voice of the top 12. Her duet with Jordin was the highlight of tonight’s finale show.

          • ivy says:

i think the biggest factor that jessica didn’t win is not because of what her haters are throwing at her… maybe it’s because of her ethnicity. if only we are being honest…

        • Marianne says:

Wait – – the little girls (and cougars) didn’t vote for P2 because he looks nice (“pretty”)?? A little double standard there. So many comments I got tired of reading/hearing about how cute he is or how sexy he is. He didn’t “do” it for me. Oh well…

      • tarc says:

Or perhaps you are mssing some things, and people voted for the person they’d more likely buy music from – like I did.

        • Owen says:

As I’ve made clear Tarc, people DON’T buy these guys music. They vote but don’t buy.

          • Snsetblaze says:

Well I voted for David Cook and bought his music so your statement is wrong. If I vote for them, I’ll buy the music whether they win or not. If I don’t vote for them, and I like them enough (like Lee and Kris, I’ll check out the album at myocal library.

          • Snsetblaze says:

And I did not like either Scotty or Lauren do I won’t buy either (and it’s not because I don’t like country. I like some of it.)

          • tarc says:

And, Owen, you ignore the FACT that these guys are successful musicians, that unlike 99.99% of the people that try. So, people DO ‘buy’ these guys. In 2009, Hicks was named in Forbes Top 10 Idol money makers, begins an extended musical run in Vegas next month. Allen just released a new album. Lambert’s number one today. Daughtry is on their fourth album. DeWyze released an additional album this year due to high demand for his pre-Idol work. Scotty McCreary has a US #1 album 8 months ago. The list of country guys with guitars 9and careers) is long. Casey just released an album. Put down the crack pipe, Owen, because the FACTS don’t LIE.

          • D says:

I have bought every single CD by David Cook — pre and post Idol, as well as Kris Allen, Lee Dewyze and now I will buy Phillip’s CD. I also have gone to several of David Cook’s concerts. I even voted six hours last night — two hours in one time zone with my cell phone and four hours in my home state! These guys win because people are willing to spend their precious time and money helping them make their dreams come true!

          • MamaLis says:

Ya. No. I’ve bought a lot of Phillips.

          • smidnite says:

I’ve bought: Kelly, Carrie, Bo, Chris, Jordin, David, Adam, Kris and Lee (duet with Crystal). I will buy Philip’s single.

          • ivy says:

like what is happening to the last winners?

          • Owen says:

Once again, skewing the facts of what I said. But no matter how many times you do so, it doesn’t change the factn as much as you apparently want it to: The people who vote for the Idol WINNER (as I said Adam doesn’t count and Scotty is the exception) these people do NOT purchase the WGWG CD’s. They have all lost (or about to lose) their Idol contracts. As will Phillip eventually. Even Fantasia still has HER Idol contract.

          • chistosa says:

Sorry Owen. Your statement is inaccurate. Their music sells. And if you are suggesting that Jessica would sell better than Phillip, I suggest you go to today’s I Tunes. Phillip’s Home is number 1 and he has 12 songs selling quite well, many of them in the top 20. Jessica has two songs and the highest ranking is 139. She is not selling. Phillip is. People may appreciate hearing a diva ballad song well but they don’t want them on their playlists. Lee did not sell but the others have sold a respectable number of records. Carrie and Kelly sold well but Jordin and even Fantasia have not made huge dents in the market. It is not male vs. female, it is not racism. People buy music they like. And many people (and a good number of them males) love the indie rock sound of Phillip.

          • tarc says:

Owen, Phillip Phillips had his first iTunes NUMBER ONE single today, May 24, 2012. I’ve got no clue what problems you have with reality are, but there’s more proof that you’re crazy.

        • Idol says:

          Thank you.

      • susela says:

I would say Phillip is far superior to Lee DeWyze and Kris Allen, so I’m perfectly okay with him winning. He’s got a shine to him when he’s on stage and might actually go on to do something worthwhile. And Jessica will be just fine!

        • ivy says:

i hope jessica and adam lambert would duet together. that would be nice!

          • Lana says:

Please don’t try to bring down Adam with Jessica! Elsie would sound better or Joshua but not Jessica. By the way all of Joshua’s singing last night (except for the Fantasia thing) showed that he should have been in the finale and also the winner, he out sang everyone! Loved the phone book joke. Also tired of the should of been a girl who won, who cares about the sex of the singer, all that matters is how good the singer is. I too have bought CDs of all the Idols I’ve voted for and I’ve only had two win, but I’ve bought quite of few runner ups. No thats wrong because I did not vote for Carrie and then discovered that she was fantastic with her first song and since then she has become one of my favorite country singers.

    • Raving says:

okay this really pisses me off when I see WGWG first of all, all of the claimed “WGWG” idol winners are very different genres, two I don’t know why scotty falls into that category he barely played the guitar, three it doesn’t matter who wins if your going to be successful then your going to be successful we’ll see where the top 12 are in a year and then you can compare careers, the so called “WGWG” winner from last year is the most successful thus far from his bunch, actually most successful idol in a long while. Finally I really hate it when the white card is pulled YES it is racist can you imagine the back-lash if people were to go onto a blog and bitch about there being 5 consecutive winners of another race? I’m sure someone would be quick to call that racist, so do not tell me that is not racist, whites face racism too. I am white and I grew up as a minority in the school I went to (yes, they do exist) so believe me I know what its like to be a victim of racism, speaking from first hand experiences. I can’t believe people are still so ignorant, and yes I know white people are also making this WGWG claim, to anyone whos says this no matter your race, gender, political views or sexual orientation- I just want to say yes it is racist and an immature stereotype.

On another note I’m sick of people comparing the talents of Jessica and Phillip. Just because Jessica can sing runs and big notes doesn’t make her better than Phillip, and just because Phillip has musicality and and a unique voice doesn’t make him better than her. They are so VERY different that they are incomparable- both great singers who deserved to be in the top 2.

      • kevinianbryan says:

        Breathe.

      • Raving says:

also it’s not just white people voting for white guys so get over yourselves..

      • tired of all the ugly remarks says:

That needed to be said. This is no place for talk of racism! IMO those who scream racism loudest and most are the true racists…unfortunately they seem to be unable to recognize that. And by the way, I have purchased from every contestant I voted for and some I didn’t, often for no other reason than just to support them. All the contestants are young people who are reaching for their dream and do not deserve all the ugly comments I have seen in here about them. They are all talented and all seem such nice people….all races, genders and creeds of them.

      • ivy says:

if you listen to his melodies they are mostly in the same range. sooner or later it gets repetitive.

      • WHite supremecist rant and rave. You growing up a minority in a school— now you know what millions of people are going through here. Most of them are here not by choice. Don’t talk about your oppression, because you still are part of the white social structure that is has all the power.

        • Raving says:

I never claimed to know what millions of people are going through, all I said that racism against whites exists so don’t say that the bitching about WGWG isn’t racist..

        • MamaLis says:

That chip on your shoulder must make it hard for you to buy shirts.

    • SallyinChicago says:

Another WGWG who will NOT sell millions of records….and a chance for America to diversify the talent…give us a woman and a brown woman at that! Was that so hard America….just do it for diversity’s sake and stop AI from becoming a repeat of itself each and every year. Dull…boring, One of the worst if not the worst AI finale ever.

    • Jaxguy says:

the show has finally imploded. Think long and hard about these names. Taylor Hicks, Lee Dewyzee, Phillip Phillips/ Vomit fest. WHite guy with guitar. The show is lost forever. Coffee shop fodder and people who hate vocalists. Garbage show. Garbage results. Go ahead attack me everybody. I don’t care. I WILL NEVER BUY A RECORD OF MEDIOCRE CRAP BY THE HICKS, DEWYZE, SCOTTYS AND PHILLIPS OF THE WORLD. Raced to buy McPhee, Yamin, Daughtry, Archuleta, Haley and Lambert. Will do the same for Jessica. Goodbye AI. You and your crappy judges have lost another viewer.

    • And says:

Yea I can’t remember a single great song he sang, but how many of Jessica’s were memorable!!

      • tarc says:

And I own all of Phillips songs and none of Jessica’s. I’ll wait until she’s matured.

        • Noel says:

O you’re so childish tarc…just because YOU own all his songs…doesn’t mean everyone else does. You’re just some crazy fanboy/girl obsessed with one contestant. Who cares if Jessica is 16?!

          • Marsaili says:

I own all his stuff, too. Quite a few people have said they own his stuff—your point is? Oh, you were just replying to be nasty to Tarc? Ok. Next……..

          • tarc says:

LOL! Obviously America. And the people that buy Idol songs on iTunes. Sorry, if that disturbs you, but hey, facts.

          • MamaLis says:

I own a bunch of his songs, too. More than I normally buy.

          • Noel says:

How was I nasty in that response? Tarc is the one actually being nasty to any one who wasn’t a huge fan of Phil and crapping all over Jessica. Go read ALL of his/her comments. O and tarc you’re wrong…owning someone’s songs doesn’t mean anything. Itunes purchases aren’t even counted in the vote…so totally missing the point.

          • Emily says:

Er…is it just me or are half of these comments by the same 3-4 people going on and on about how they are diehard P2 fans that buy all his music, voted for him endlessly, and cry racism at any comment mentioning his Caucasian complexion?

          • tarc says:

Noel – If you need an answer, you’re beyond my help.
Emily – I have no idea – I never engage in the race comments, so I guess that would be a firm ‘no’.

          • ivy says:

people might be buying his songs because of the craze they are in for now. after that when another WGWG comes along…

          • tewence says:

don’t worry about tarc…he/she goes around telling people their opinions are only opinions but what tarc says is truth. and marsaili rushes to back him/her up….trolling at its finest.

          • tarc says:

Actually, I’ve never said that tewence, and I challenge you to prove it. Further, there are multiple people around here that seem to agree with me often, Marsaile only occasioanlly. That’s pretty close to lying territory.

      • Mikey says:

I thought the same thing about Jessica…She sang a lot of songs that have ben sung great…equally as great, but nothing authentic the whole season. “You Are So Beautiful” was her best…and i don’t like that song. Phillip was the most original, developed, and authentic singer on the show and personally I love his music. So to each his own.

      • susela says:

It’s the opposite for me; all of Jessica’s were so similar they blend together in my mind, but i’m still singing the hook to his Phillip’s new single.

    • Yeah, the black guy who screamed half of his songs and the little Amerasian girl who while she has a great voice but needs some life experience lost. Get over it – glad to have the white guy with a guitar – he deserved it and guess what, he won. What have you ever done?

    • Layla says:

I think if Jessica had not been allowed to shine so brightly in her duet on the finale, I would have been devastated. I knew last night that Jimmy Iovine will do more harm than good for Jessica if she won. I hope she gets to record the songs she wants to record and she can put the show behind her. Congrats to Phillip and I hope he gets better! I never attacked other contestants on this talkback and only defended my favorite. I support anyone who dreams so high. I won’t be reading the comments because I know they still won’t give my lil girl her due. It’s been this way all season. I wish Jessica makes the best of her journey and that she has people in her future that will protect her from the vices and traps of the music industry. I also hope her pre-Idol youtube clips stay online. That’s the dreamer that we all fell in love with so long ago. Our Swaggernaut is off to the galaxies. It will never ever be the same after tonight. Good night all. :)

      • smidnite says:

I was afraid that Jennifer Holiday was going to BITE Jessica during their duet.

        • D says:

          She was definitely scary!

        • Andy J says:

I think Jennifer Holliday looked really good. She’s lost weight and had on a classy dress. Fantasia, on the other hand, what was she thinking with that catsuit? OMG-I was having flashbacks to the Shamu show at Sea World. And it looks like Erika has put on more than a few pounds since her elimination. But with all due respect to Fantasia, sometimes it IS better to wear an outfit that leaves something to the imagination.

        • ivy says:

hahahaha. there is a picture of her nearly doing that. so funny! but boy was it the best performance ever! ^_^

      • ivy says:

we’ll highly anticipate for her to collect her grammies! :-)

      • scrutinizer says:

layla, those were beautiful and touching words. i couldn’t have expressed my feelings any better :)

    • Brendan says:

Yup, the WGWG trend has officially killed this show. It’s clearly no longer relevant…. Time to move on, America. There are now PLENTY of other singing shows that do more right and have better winners.

    • Ruby says:

Cute white guy who knows how to play guitar, is a great singer and has a great personality. Who EARNED his win. Should Jessica have won just because she’s female? They were pretty equally talented.

    • Erinn says:

Apparently there is an 11th commandment i missed : ” Thou shall not be white and carry thy guitar” ….crazy right? Now it makes sense why there are so many ignorant racists running their mouths. Get over yourselves please, Ah Thank you

    • White Guy With Guitar but still a good winner. Better than Lee Dewyze, lesser than David Cook, about on par with Kris Allen and Scotty McCreery. Jessica had a great run. All the props to her. Can’t wait to her her on the radio.

      • Marianne says:

I don’t agree that he’s on par with Kris Allen. At least Kris is a good vocalist, and has range to his vocals.

    • Riversky11 says:

J Holl is a goddess ! They work so well together ,so connected like they have been doing this forever. We want more!!!!

    • Jay says:

      @%#$ get over it already!

    • TJ says:

Ok, I’m not understanding why “white guy with guitar” is a bad thing… apparently there are people out there who enjoy that. Music, like MANY things in life, has many different styles, flavors etc. (and thankfully so) so you might find the one that speaks to you but it may not speak to the person standing next to you and believe it or not THAT’S OK and what makes life great don’t ya think?!?

    • wsssteve says:

This is the first year that I wanted the winner to WIN. Last year it was Haley that I wanted to win. Then Crystal in season 9. The best way to vote, anyway, is to buy the original material from the contestants you liked. That is what will make-or-break their career. This was a strong Idol year. One of the first where I felt conflicted on who should go home. So, buy some music from your favorite and try to help them succeed. Just bought Haley’s new album, and Casey James as well. Thanks, to Michael Slezak, for making another Idol year even more entertaining.

    • Mary B says:

Guess what WGWG single made #1 on the top 100 itunes chart. Congratulations Phillip Phillips.

    • MusicGrrrl says:

Two of the first three winners were black and two of the first three winners were women. Does that mean that America hated white people or hated men? No. It means that those were the contestants the majority of Americans enjoyed at the time. Big diva singers are not really in style right now. Who’s big? Gotye is the biggest thing around. The “it” guy if you will. Six weeks at the top of Billboard hot 100 so far. Covered on Glee AND American Idol. If you don’t know him, look him up. Jadon Mraz is also huge. Whose eccentric alt rock style is most like those two? Not Jessica or Joshua for sure. That’s right. It’s Phillip Phillips. His style is perfect for the current radio trends. I just hope radio will accept him and play his music and that people who voted for him will continue to support him with their music buying dollars in the years to come so he won’t become the butt of AI jokes. He deserves better.

And as a side note to that: If you voted for Kris Allen in season 8, go and buy his truly excellent second album:Thank You Camelia, in stores NOW!

      • LOLZ says:

Exactly, if Jessica’s race was an issue then I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have made it to the top 2. Your right big diva singers are not really in style right now, there is quite a few of them and idk if there is room for another one

    • Lizzie says:

It would be racist to say “Filipino girl with voice, meh” or “Black guy singing gospel, meh” so this is the same damn thing.

    • Maria Flor de Luna says:

      Racist all the way forrest

    • Ella says:

I think next year they should only pick black, mexican, Asian singers. That way people are forced to break the mould they’ve set in their mind.

    • Leo says:

I’m a Jessica fan and I probably should went on full rage but to be honest, I’m not that angry. Philip deserves the title as well, at least he’s far better than Snotty Mccreepy. Now, if Jessica hasn’t been “saved” in Top 7, and by “saved”, I meant getting caught in cheap drama and scenario, to sabotage her chance of winning, I probably will throw a tantrum by now. But, Philip deserves the title and c’mon Jessica fans, we should support her when her album’s out! Congrats Philip!

      • tarc says:

The Top 3 all won this week.

      • Tiff says:

Congrats Philip. He does deserve it. He’s got a style and he sticks to it. As Leo says, better than McCreepy.

Honestly, after watching that, I really thought Joshua should have won, but I’ve thought that all along. But I must admit that the Jessica-J.Holl duet was the best of the night. Jon Fogerty with Philip just sort of highlighted the fact that Philip doesn’t sing on key…which is fine when he’s solo, but not when he’s singing with someone.

        • ivy says:

it took me a long time to recover after they performed. boy was it epic

        • tewence says:

your comments are exactly why i thought the results should have been different. phillip does in fact stick to his style (which will benefit him) but if he can’t sing on key, the most basic thing that should be there, why should he win?

      • Mary B says:

Someone who speaks sanity. Thank you.

      • smidnite says:

Scotty was way too goofy for my liking.

  2. ana says:

    I did call you crazy.

  3. Clarissa says:

    Congrats WGWG

  4. Congrats WGWG #5! Kristy Lee Cook curse Lives on!

  5. PredictableKaraoke says:

I haven’t watched IDOL since Simon left — but I guessed in January that Phillip Phillips would win. Last 5 winners are white dudes. Predictable.

Not sure why people invest so much time in this show any longer. Jumped the shark.

  6. Dick Whitman says:

    meh

  7. Karen O says:

This confirms that a girl can never win this show again. Jessica kicked so much ass all season, amassed a huge fanbase, got to 2nd, and still lost to a mediocre cute guy with a guitar.

    • swish24 says:

Yea she kicked so much ass that she would of been kicked off the show seven weeks ago except for a judges save but don’t let the facts get in the way of story.

      • stacy says:

        Sexist

      • leanne says:

obviously that save was scripted to boost ratings. Jessica had one of the best performances that night and has always been on top then all of a sudden you have Josh, Elise and Jessica in the bottom three. Even the judges disagreed in the bottom 3 for that week. Bottom line american idol is clearly rigged even past idol contestants have said that…..

        • Joe Strummer says:

What past idol contestants said that? Do you know how much trouble they could get in if the show was rigged? You really don’t know what you’re talking about.

        • MusicGrrrl says:

So you probably think Chris Daughtry’s ouster was scripted as well as Pia Toscano’s. No, the “favorites” sometimes get voted out before top 3. That’s what happened to Jessica. She was voted out in 7th place but thankfully the judges had not wasted the save on Deandre the way they did on Casey Abrams in Pia’s season (no thank to JLo who wanted to use the save on him.) Idol is not “rigged.” The voting is overseen by accountants who make sure everything is on the up and up.

    • Candi says:

Oh wait and got voted out. Yup that’s right.

    • gailer says:

And his fans had every right to vote for him, didn’t they?

    • tarc says:

No, it doesn’t. *walks away from the strange lady*

    • NR says:

I’m excited for the X factor though its the only singing competition to produce a female winner and I can’t wait to see Simon and Britney

    • Jaxguy says:

Jessica was the best vocalist in the history of this show. Her duet tonight with Jennifer Holiday was not only the greatest performance in the history of this show, but will be my last and fondest memory of watching Idol. If I watch anymore reality it will be the shows like Hells Kitchen, Top Chef and Project Runway where real experts make the final decision.

      • And says:

I just had the thought at least on DWTS the judges who should know what they are doing participate in the choice let the judges have more voice in outcomes… Tyler wanted Jessica and Randy wanted Joshua .. better choices

      • Joe Strummer says:

I thought you were leaving. Get out of here.

      • whoami says:

Yes, those “expert” judges on PR chose Gretchen over freakin’ Mondo. Who is everyone wearing nowadays? Mondo. What ever happened to Gretchen? Who knows…

    • susela says:

You know, a lot of people don’t care for that power ballad diva stuff. Jessica has a divine voice, truly stellar, but her songs all blend together for me—all headed toward a big glory note. It gets tiresome; I can’t imagine a whole concert or album of that. But no worries for her, she’ll have a wonderful career.

      • Jo says:

That’s why I never voted for Jessica…or Joshua. I appreciate their voices and know they have exceptional talent, I just hate listening to music where they sing the runs and then the glory note. It’s just not my style. My favorite singer is Alison Krauss, a woman who has the voice of an angel and control over it. She can and does sing with everyone from Robert Plant to Dolly Parton. The thing is, if Joshua had controlled his voice at the end of every song I would have voted for him every week. Just not what I like to listen to.

  8. Davey says:

Jessica showed tonight why she should have won!

    • tewence says:

YES! and phillip showed why he shouldn’t have.

    • Njloonie says:

Any singer that can hold her own alongside Jennifer Holliday deserves to win!

    • Will says:

Exactly. That moment before the results when it was just the two of them singing side by side just showed exactly how much of a better singer Jessica really was.

      • tarc says:

Actually, it highlighted precisely what each of them has to work on. And the better singer won – substance over tricks.

        • J. May says:

May I offer you a glass of STFU? Kidding!

          • tarc says:

            You first! Kidding!

          • Joe says:

I’m not kidding tarc. STFU! My best to your cat. I can’t imagine the pain and misery that poor animal must go through on a daily basis being owned by you. Now quick, jump to page 4, someone said something bad about Phillip. Fly fly little starling. Fly fly!

          • tarc says:

I’m so glad you show who you are in every post, Joe. :)

        • Jaxguy says:

SInce this crap is over, I will tell you you are an idiot who needs a hearing test. You have no sense of what good singing is. PHILLIP WAS NOT EVEN AN AVERAGE SINGER. Nice guy but is terrible and I will predict here and now he will be a gigantic turdy flop. Just like the other WGWG’s that have won this show. I lied I would watch again if they just picked guys as contestants so we know a wonderful and talented singer like Jessica and even Hollie would not go through this garbage. I so miss Simon. He would have crucified Phillip most of the season.

          • tarc says:

I think you’ve said that five or six times before, and like every other time, I chalk it up to you being one of those sad people that needs intensive therapy and heavy meds. Hope not to see you again next year!

          • Luke says:

Oh please. The Simon of today bears little resemblance to the guy who used to speak the truth. Anyone who hires 2 young pop stars with questionable singing abilities (studio enhanced) like Spears and Lovato has lost all credibility. All he cares about is showing sponsors he will pull in a younger demo – THIS time.

          • Owen says:

Jax, as Rhianna and JLo proved tonight, you don’t HAVE to sing well to be a hit recording artist. Phil sings just fine, plus he’s been ill lately so not singing his best.

          • smidnite says:

In answer to Luke; I question Simon’s ethics in the fact that both of these young ladies have histories of emotional issues….

        • MamaLis says:

I voted for Phillip, but I don’t know if I’d argue that he was the better “singer,” the better “vocalist.” I mean, Jessica is an amazing “singer.” What I’d argue is that he lead with the whole package. He was a better performer. He was more connected to his songs. He knew how to make songs connect to each other. He knew how to arrange songs and play off a band. He had the ability to make you feel what he was singing. He was very likeable and his voice, interesting. Things like that made him ‘the whole winning thing.’

        • Will says:

Jessica typically sang songs straight and used nothing but her voice. Phil tampered with the melodies consistently and played an instrument. Who here is using tricks exactly?

I don’t begrudge you for liking Phillip’s voice better, but he is not the better singer of the two, no matter how many times you try to say otherwise, and it isn’t a slight on Phillip either. He specializes in a certain style, and would be a better, say, grunge or bluegrass singer than Jessica, when you take into account the vocal qualities that it takes to sing in those genres, but on the merit of pure technical singing ability, Jessica is a stronger vocalist.

          • ivy says:

why do i have this bad feeling that somehow AI sabotaged her. bad songs, no big production number. be honest that last performance of phillip on top2 night helped a lot in enhancing his performance.

    • Mary B says:

I am in Phillips camp but I tell you she was fantastic and if she would have displayed some of that last night she would have won hands down. I really love Phillip though and when he cried and went to his parents for a hug I literally melted. I am a mom of three boys.

      • Owen says:

Yeah, I fell a little bit in love with him again (I once did really like him) when he couldn’t finish the song because of his tears and then fell into his family’s arms. And this is nowhere near the crime of Season 9’s Talented Female losing to WGWG.

      • Jaxguy says:

There was NO WAY Jessica would have won. It was hopeless after his week after week of inferior performances to everyone else on the show not just Jessica and NEVER Being in the bottom 3. Please let real talent lovers stop supporting this crap.

        • tarc says:

Correct. And blame Nigel for lowering the minimum age. Jessica wasn’t ready. Has she auditioned at 18 (or 20), I might be agreeing with you.

          • HudsonRiveerside says:

I am so happy for Phillip Phillips!!! :) :) :) What a heartfelt final song. I hope my fellow P2 fans will be gracious winners, there’s no need to comment on every Jessica fan’s vent. The show is over. Much success to Jessica, she will do just fine and will only get better.

          • tarc says:

I agree with you HudsonRiverside – the Top 3 all won big time this week. Jessica really impressed (and grew some) tonight, and I’m sure she’ll be amazing.

          • ivy says:

i think if she waited for that age, she won’t need AI. am sure she will be scooped by lots of producers to make albums

          • Dubliner says:

You might be right, Ivy. But I’d bet that it cost her the title. That probably won’t end up mattering either.

      • D says:

Reminded me of the year David Cook won and he cried onstage….it just proves why people vote for them. They are real performers who aren’t afraid to show their emotions!

      • they sabotage jessica for her songs even her last winning song wasnt good.. and phillip given an easy song and have melody already because greg holden was the original singer of home…

    • JC says:

That was so great I swear my jaw was wide open the real competition is who will sell the most :)

      • Owen says:

No, he’s not going to sell the most. He’s not even going to sell well, if history proves right (as it always does).

        • Music says:

well last years WGWG has done pretty well for himself especially compared to former idols soo if history repeats itself this year then he’s going to sell very well :)

          • Owen says:

sorry, I should have said “collective” history in that Scotty is the exception that sorta proves the rule.

          • tarc says:

In 2009, Hicks (the most reviled person for thse guys) was named by Forbes in their Top 10 Idol money makers. That sounds successful to me. As does his year gig in Vegas that starts next month.

          • Owen says:

If you read that article you know that Taylor Hicks did NOT get that money from recording. Or touring as a singer. He made that money performing as Teen Angle in “Grease” on Broadway and on an extensive tour. Again, no one bought his CD’s. They voted him American Idol but did not buy his music. And when no one buys Phillip’s do you think he is the type to do Broadway or headline Vegas? I’m sorry, but in a couple years that poor boy is done for.

          • smidnite says:

Let’s not forget Taylor Hick’s new gig, appearing on “The Choice”.

          • tarc says:

Yes, Owen, he got that money from records, live gigs, and musical theater. You know, singing. That crazy thing we were talking about… making a living in the industry.

          • tarc says:

@smidnite – LOL! Well, I’m not sure if that’s a paying gig, but it’s another example that people DO spend their dollars on post-Idol guys. Touring is certainly the biggest moneymaker for musicians, so I get why Hicks does a lot of shows, but I’d love to hear a new blues album from him.

        • JC says:

No my comment was misdirected I was talking about Jessica and Holliday’s duet I love Jessica :)

    • Snsetblaze says:

During that duet, Jessica showed the same spark that she had during Vegas when she sung with D’Andre and Candace. That was the only other time I saw it. Most of the tome i was bored silly. And as goodcas she was, I still thought Jennifer Holliday wiped the floor with her. I would have loved to see Jennifer Hudson I the mix.

    • scrutinizer says:

      AMEN!!!

  9. Kristi says:

aww, seeing him get all choked up made me cry

    • DonnaT says:

Me too! I thought it was wonderful to see Phillip walk off the stage and be embraced by his family! I am very happy to see a different Idol this season.

      • sg54 says:

Um, what? Different? Like a white guy with a guitar who sings like an artist but will probably fade because even though america loves them cute boys during the show they never buy the actual music and subsequently, the boys embarrass the legacy of the show? I think i’ve already seen that like, five times.

I hate to be bitter, I do love Phillip Phillips’ personality, looks, voice, everything. But AI was, is, and always will be a talent competition. And there were contestants this year who more talented than him. But because of this asinine voting system, they’ll probably be forgotten forever.

        • Music says:

American Idol stops being a talent competition when it begins to allow America to vote and, as Ryan encourages every week, vote for their FAVORITE! If you need clarification that is also known as a popularity contest. It’s a talent competition until the top 24 as its the judges and producers job to get the most talented crop of guys and girls together for America to vote on. No matter who wins there is always going to be someone who bitches about the voting system so get over it.

      • Owen says:

People like DonnaT know she’s trying to lessen the issue by pretending its not the case. She knows Phillip is just another white guy with guitar. And yes, he’s different as he has different DNA. But he is the same type that has won the last five times to, except Scotty, lesser and lesser results…

        • tarc says:

See my post below for the refutation… which was easily seached BTW. Owen’s inability to handle basic facts is becoming legend.

          • Owen says:

Its becoming less and less fun to counter each of Tarc’s retorts. As each time he tries to deflect the truth with “facts” placed to prove things I wasn’t even arguing, Tarc becomes smaller and smaller to the point that everyone knows he realizes the sad truth and that he is grasping at straws to prove just how hollow last night’s victory truly was.

          • tarc says:

I’m not sure why, since you’ve yet to manage it.

    • deedee says:

awww, me too! He’s been so hard to read all season, and now he pulls out the tears! *sniff*, almost as touching as David Cook’s confetti shower. Almost.

      • Scarlett says:

Almost. Nothing will ever top David’s win…. :-)

        • Amy says:

Yeah, I loved that finale, not to mention that season in general. Still feel really nostalgic for S7. I think that Kris had the best reaction to his win (though the moment was subsequently ruined by the fact that Simon didn’t even try to act like he was happy for Kris).

      • Jo says:

He was so composed and almost didn’t show emotion when it was revealed and he started singing and I kept thinking people would be saying “He doesn’t even care he won.” And then he broke down and started crying. How sweet.

        • Owen says:

Well, it all happened so fast for him, the poor, sweet guy. He won, they shoved a guitar at him and said sing! It took the first chorus for it to register. And then when it did it was so huge it was hard to deal with! At that moment all he wanted (and needed) was his family.

    • umbrella says:

      ^^this^^

    • Name That Tune says:

So you wouldn’t get chocked up if Jessica teared up as she embraced her dad & mom?

  10. dj says:

I knew it. Get your checkbook out, Slezak.

    • kevinianbryan says:

      THIS.

    • darcy's evil twin says:

And the “get out your checkbook, Slezak” comment gets a Made Me Laugh. :-)

There will be a few more dead mosqitos in the world thanks to Phillip. Idol gives back!

      • tarc says:

        ROFL! :D

      • Teresa says:

I was going to say, Jessica’s heartbreak is some African children’s gain. Since what they’re gaining could be their lives, it’s more than an even trade.

Here’s an idea: Anyone who is upset at the outcome this year (or elated) send $5 to Malarianomore.org in Melinda Doolittle’s name. Show the world the power of the Idoloonies!

        • Mary B says:

Jessica is not heartbroken at all the fans on this blog are by far more upset than she is. I just saw an interview with her and she is relieved it is all over and delighted that Phillip won because she feels he deserved it. This is right after the show and unless she is a great actress that deserves the academy award, I felt she was very genuine.

  11. Gus says:

Cannot WAIT for the storm of diehard Jessica fans saying terrible things about Phillip. I just wanna say that they’re both amazing and they both deserved the title… I wish Jessica had won, but I’m happy with the result. :)

    • Mary B says:

I’m waiting for the backlash. Please Phillip don’t read TV Line. I don’t care what they say let them say all they want but with all the meanest, all the hate they could not bring Phillip down. He won because he deserved it just swallow it.

    • Miss Otis Regrets... says:

All they care about are their quotas.
Quota not met, FAILURE. Period. I recommend all white guys to avoid Idol in order not to be attacked for who they are.

    • Tiff says:

Are you kidding me? The Philip fans have said just as horrible things about Jessica. You guys are crazy if you think there hasn’t been animosity on both sides.

They both deserved it, in different ways. Frankly, I think any one of the top 6 deserved it – Joshua, Hollie, Elise and Skylar all could have taken it as well and I would have been okay.

Anyway, whatever. I’m just saying – the P2 fans are just as rabid. So calm down.

    • ivy says:

i think most of jessica’s fans are anticipating for her album instead

  12. tewence says:

:( sad night. congrats to pp.

    • tarc says:

Why? Tommy Matola tweeted earlier today he’ll be working with Jimmy on Jessica’s first album. Joshua, Jessica, and Phillip all won the real prize already.

      • darcy the slutty twin says:

Exactly. I really don’t understand why a Phillip fan has to hate on Jessica or vice-versa. Or a Joshua fan hating on Phil and/or Jess. You can love a contestant without hating on the others and you don’t have to start bashing on a contestant because someone is hating on your favorite. I am ecstatic that Phillip won. He knows who he is as an artist, is incredibly hot and has sexy chest hair. Personally, I’d love it if his first album goes the way of “Home.” Songs that don’t need repeat listening for you to love.
I am looking forward to what they can come up with for Jessica as well. She is phenom and I believe she can do well given some sassy but age-appropriate material.
I’m very interested in Hollie’s career as well. She has a very raw instrument, but it is a huge and booming instrument. She also is very likeable. I’m not such a huge fan of the others, but wish them well. Elise, I feel deserves a shot. Heejun, to me, is extremely hot. He and Phillip can sandwich me forever.

        • tarc says:

LOL! I think Hollie has a good shot, and Andre… Colton and Elise, obviously. Skylar probably already has a contract waiting for midnight tonight. They’re all very talented.

          • Snsetblaze says:

Skyler looks like she could have been Reba’s daughter. I loved when they sang together.

      • ben says:

Why? Because it proves that the demos of the show no longer can sustain any kind of winner other than the kind we have had recently. As it continues to pile season after season of WGWG on us, it perpetuates the perception that noone else can win, thus driving the fans of anyone else away, thus making it even more likely to prove the original point.

        • tarc says:

Hardly. It merely shows that the FOX cash machine is a handy talent sorter for Interscope. All kinds of people like all kinds of music, something fostered for the first time by the internet and services like iTunes and Pandora. They vote for what they like, and they buy what they like, and there is value added for the contestants to the label because they dont have to build a fanbase for success. Again, Ben, the iTunes Top 200 is stuffed with white guys that play their own songs and black guys that rap. Male voices are in vogue right now, and have been for about 5 years (fror a change). Idol and iTunes provide the evidence of what’s happening.

          • Leila says:

So Adele, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Rihanna don’t count according to you?

          • tarc says:

            Non-sequitur, Leila. Follow along.

          • NR says:

@Leila don’t forget Kelly Clarkson, Kesha, Britney Spears & Taylor Swift women rule the charts. Here’s hoping Jessica will soon join them in chart dominance :)

          • Owen says:

No, Leila was exactly arguing your point of male voices being “in” right now. I have no valid proof except the examples Leila indicated but I don’t think male voices are anymore “in” or “out” than they have ever been. And it seems most of the real success has been female recording artists. Your arguments are beginning to take on a nasty male entitlement slant that I’ve been blind to or just noticing. Anyway, its kinda getting icky arguing with you.

          • Owen says:

Sorry, “icky” is a subjective term. What I mean is, I don’t mind debating someone who is coming from a good place, no matter how mean or deluded their arguments are. But I don’t like wallowing with someone who is arguing from a very nasty place like I’m believing you are now. I’ve made other new comments to you beyond this post, so it appears that I’m still arguing with you. But I’m telling you now, this is my latest and last post to you.

          • tarc says:

Um, what the hell are you talking about, Owen? As usual, you’re just making things up. You went intellectually icky the minute you started making things up about 10 days ago from my side. I’ll happily invite you not to read or reply to my posts, since i really don’t have anything to say to people that make things up. :)

          • Dubliner says:

Good idea, Owen. It’s not really appropriate to attack tarc personally because you can’t win a disagreement. He’s pointed out quite a few facts you just ignore. As someone that makes a living doing music (mostly), your armchair quarterbacking is kinda insulting, mate. Most of us would love the have the name recognition of David Cook or the opportunities of Kris Allen. Feel free not to reply to me – ever.

        • FreeHaley says:

Indeed with more and more who might for certain types giving up, in a couple more years, pretty soon a Haley or Elise wouldn’t make it past top 12 even without being bused.

      • ivy says:

am glad tommy mottola would help out jimmy. so far his song choices for jessica all bomb.

      • tewence says:

ok tarc, time to shut your mouth for real…your OPINION of phillip being the best thing since sliced bread is only that. it is SAD because this is a singing competition, and the best did not win, is that my opinion? yes. do i think it is fact like you thing all of your opinions are? no. it is clear from the finale show that jessica out sang him, so according to that, i personally thought she should have won in fairness. and that’s my opinion. please stop talking to me.

    • JC says:

Jessica will be fine with that voice and Tommy Motolla on her side she cannot go wrong :) smile fellow blujays :)

      • tewence says:

i know this, and i’m over it. i just thought the best singer should have won, that’s all. i really hope she stands her ground when making a record because she could do a BOMB album. i’m so excited for her.

  13. huntter says:

Another White Guy With a Guitar wins…..what’s new?! American Idol Season 12 – Women and Minorities need not apply

    • jcs says:

Trying to make the result seem sexist or racist is ridiculous…the majority of voters are likely young girls and that’s why he won…plus he’s really talented. Quit whining.

      • Sha says:

but that’s just it. You just contradicted yourself anyways; saying that claiming sexism is ridiculous but then saying he won because the young girls are the majority of voters (and implying they only vote for guys)
Why are these young girls so hell-bent on voting for the latest cute guy? Why can’t American girls vote for a female contestant who is equally, if not more talented than the cute guy?

        • Owen says:

The answer to that is as old as Elvis and the Beatles. And as new as One Direction.

          • Sha says:

lol you’re right, I guess I just meant it rhetorically. I’m glad Jessica made it to second place. Wish young girls were more supportive of each other though!

      • Jaxguy says:

But it is and I’m an older white guy.

      • ben says:

Umm… he didn’t say anyithng about it being sexist or racist; you just said why phil won – its exactly the same reason why women and minorities need not apply.

    • gailer says:

No one is forcing anyone to watch this show. It’s a game show. Nothing more.

    • Name That Tune says:

I realized I grew up listening to WGWGs since I was 2. That would be Elvis singing “You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog.” Which also means The Beatles & just about every big white male singer who played an instrument. Listening to P2 duet with John Fogerty reminded me just how ordinary P2 is. Nothing special about him.
But that duet with JS & JH? That was an Idol moment & stole the show. And next year let’s hope they let more than one WGWG & fewer singers in the Top 24 so we can have a competetion

      • ivy says:

just realized that AI is not a singing competition but a beauty competition. next year i know what to bet in vegas. easy money ;)

  14. Rick says:

Uhm…………………….. I can pretty much die now. That title was Jessica’s. Everyone knows it, even Phillip. If we could limit everyone to one vote, Jessica would have been crowned. I’ve been saying that since Haley Reinhart lost.

    • Faz says:

Not really — that’s your opinion and it is a fine one. I thought she was pretty good for a 16 year old — but boring and non artistic as one could imagine.

    • Katie says:

i still think p2 would of won. more ppl just like him, maybe not on message boards like this, but the really casual voters.

    • swish24 says:

And if we eliminated the judges save the finale would have not included Jessica.

      • JASon says:

True!!! actually Joshua should have won it and Philip deserved second. Jessica deserved seventh if America had had their way!!! The save thing energized her fan base enough to get her to second but ultimately was never enought to beat Philip! WHo probably had 55% of the vote since weak 1.

    • deedee says:

Not at all. That may have applied in season 8, but don’t think it’s true in season 11. Could have gone either way this year.

    • gailer says:

No one can know that. She was voted out once already and saved.

    • Jaxguy says:

By the way if you haven’t checked out Haley’s CD do so now. It came out yesterday and I expected a lot less. Really strong for a debut. I like every song and I think I am going to love it after several listens. And your comment about voting is exactly why I am not watching any more. The reason they WON’T limit the voting is because they can’t brag about 132 million votes. How many watched the finale, maybe 20 million? It’s all smoke an mirrors and it allows for this kind of result year in and year out. I’m not saying a female should win just because she’s a female, but Jordan Sparks Season 6 was the last. In my opinion Kat McPhee, Melinda Doolittle (although I did like Jordan), Crystal Bowersox and Haley Reinhart at the very least should have won. If a female, especially one with a voice like Jessica couldn’t win, I not so sure a woman will ever win this again.

  15. ashley says:

“There really are no boundaries anymore.” don’t be a sore loser, Slezak!

  16. Jeremy Gable says:

    You owe Melinda money, Slezak!

  17. Laura says:

I deluded myself in to thinking it would be otherwise but my first instinct was true. From the second they showed PP’s audition, I knew he would end up winning. Unless the voting rules change, I just don’t see this trend changing.

    • Christina says:

Phillip winning was a foregone conclusion when he didn’t land in the bottom 3 the two weeks he laid eggs on the stage. Joshua and Jessica never stood a chance.

    • Yo' says:

I think you also need to change the judging panel. They had a lot to do with who won; had they wanted to pimp a woman this time, they would have. They did not.

      • Owen says:

the judges are not the problem. They pimped Crystal a whole lot, and then tried reverse psychology and that didn’t work. The only thing to do is what Simon Cowell did on X Factor. There were no attractive young white boys in the final live show performances. Not one. That was calculated to make sure a girl would win.

        • IdolFlash-7-9-35 says:

Excuse me? Josh Krajick, the guy who came in second to Melanie Amaro, may have been 31 years old, but that’s still young in my book. He played guitar and piano very frequently, had a rocker’s physique, rasp, and range, and was a very nice person. Tell me that doesn’t fit the definition of WGWG. Melanie was lucky to win against that, given the audience known to be drawn to these types of shows.

          • Jaxguy says:

He was nothing like the WGWG that have been on AI. He had a remarkable voice and was atypical of the WGWG. He was also not cute. Had he been cute he would probably have won. But in his case it would have been justified.. By the way I Loved Josh and he was my favorite but I did not react with disgust when Melanie won because she is a terrific singer. That’s the difference for me. You don’t find Josh K at every open mic in your local bar. He was special. The final 2 of XFactor were the two best of that show.

          • Mary B says:

Josh Krajcik was my favorite and I can’t wait for his album to come out Supposedly by the end of the year.

        • lydiakj says:

It’s interesting that you thought it was reverse psychology with Crystal, I never thought of it that way. I always thought it was that the producers decided they thought Lee would do better commercially so they decided to pimp him instead.

      • JC says:

Jennifer Lopez is the problem why did they make her a judge in the first place Mariah Carey is a much better choice please get Mariah and kick J.lo out for good :)

      • Justice says:

they pimped Jessica AL:OT, this whole season I was pissed off at the big deal they were making over her, not giving any of the other contestants the credit they deserved (except Joshua, he always got the standing O’s). That whole save drama and telling everyone to vote for the “best”, they had 6 other contestants on the stage and so were they indirectly telling them they were not the best? I’m sorry but you must have been blind to not see that Jessica was the one they were pushing all season long.

  18. scorpiosue1102 says:

I really like Phillip but the cute white guy won…..again. I didn’t doubt it.

  19. cheesysong says:

Uh…Phillip Phillips “decent coronation” song? Are you deaf? Oh well another “cute” guy won American Idol. Probably a one hit wonder like Kris Allen…

    • Jon says:

You might not like it, but it damn sure was better than Jessica’s… just saying.

      • Emb says:

Ohh jeez. Jessica’s was horrible. Why would they write a song like that for her to sing?

        • susela says:

Because they wanted Phillip to win. My guess is that he was getting a lot more votes than her all along, and so they gave her a stinker of a song and gave him one that would ensure he won the competition.

        • tarc says:

She picked the song from a list of possibilities – as she mentioned on air. She picked a bad song the week before when it was her choice as well. She needs to work on that. Jessica’s very talented, but there was no saving the dreadful song.

    • Njloonie says:

PP’s song sounded just like a song from”Ice Age 3″

    • tarc says:

Being the top iTunes single seller, I think the people that speak with their dollars and votes disagree.

      • Jaxguy says:

That makes you and America experts? NO WAY. You hated Jessica from the first day as much as I have dislike the mediocrity of Phil from day 1. True to American culture mediocre crap always sells the best.

        • tarc says:

Being the #1 song on iTunes single seller today, I think the people that speak with their dollars and votes disagree. To say that I “hated’ Jessica – ever – is a massive, complete lie on every level – and a stupid one since all those posts are still there on this site to refer to. Heck, look up and down in this very thread. I can tell you like shouting at the rain.

  20. Christina says:

4 years running White Guy With Guitar, Yippee!!!! (not!)

      • Christina says:

I tend to forget David Cook since he was actually decent on the show.

        • Beth says:

All the WGWGs were decent IMO except for Lee, but Crystal checked out and the entire field in S9 was painfully weak.

But still it’s getting depressing a girl can’t win.

          • JASon says:

No the field in season nine wasn’t weak. The voters just voted out all the talented ones because they were pretty girls. Lilly Scott, Didi Benami, and Katelynn Epperly all deserved to be in the top four with Crystal.

    • Adina says:

5 years, sadly. David Cook, Chris Allen, Lee Dwyze, Scott McCreery, and now Philip Phillips.

      • Yo' says:

Note: these guys are overwhelming innocuous middle of the road kinda guys. I don’t think a young Steven Tyler could win in this competition: there is a certain safety about the guys who win and he isn’t safe enough.

  21. tuppy says:

Re-watching Jessica’s “The Prayer” from last night for succor. “Every heart that’s broken will be mended…” There’s always next season!

    • Jaxguy says:

But tonight’s duet is one for the ages period. That was unforgettable. Will go down as possibly the best duet in Idol history and one of the best performances of any contestant ever. And I agree her “The Prayer” was the best performance last night. PERIOD.

  22. Marlex says:

Phillip has two very solid weeks to finish the season while Jessica had two average weeks (when you combine the total of her songs each week). If she was going to win, she needed to end the season a high note. She didn’t and he did.

    • Jaxguy says:

Ok I’ll play. Let’s say he did. But even at her worst, she was never as mediocre as Phil was for minimum half of the season. And only the original song last night was less than stellar. The other two blew him so far away I surprised he was still around. America. YOU GOT IT WRONG AGAIN.

      • tarc says:

LOL! That’s your problem – America always gets it right. You can’t handle that America disagrees with you.

        • Leila says:

          Tarc, it’s bedtime…

        • Owen says:

I have explained to you, Tarc, time and again, why America gets it wrong. Through wrong is not the correct word. They vote for the person who they do NOT want to buy recordings of (in any big way). You know this is true. And I know it makes your guy’s win very hollow. So you pretend, against facts that it isn’t true. Just be happy he got the crown. He might actually have a tiny career like the rest of the WGWG’s. But I guarantee he will be dropped from RCA/19 within two years, just as music genius Tommy Mattola* is turning Jessica Sanchez into a superstar. Sorry.

*Mogul Mattola tweeted today he will be personally supervising Jessica’s first CD.

          • tarc says:

LOL! And I explain in tiny words why you have a genuine need for meds. America votes like it votes, and to say otherwise is simply shouting at the rain.

          • Owen says:

Again, Tarc.Yes. No argument there. America votes like it votes. I provided no argument to the contrary. Of course, you ignore my argument that they don’t BUY like they vote. you’re becoming very tiresome….

          • tarc says:

And you ignore the fact that your point has been disproven – over and over. It’s tiresome. And the whole making things up – that’s boring, too.

          • Miscellaneopolan says:

I dunno about that. Crystal Bowersox outsold Lee Dewyze. Adam Lambert outsold Kris Allen by a huge margin. Several Season 5 contestants outsold Taylor Hicks. I agree with Owen: “wrong” isn’t the correct word to describe how America votes in these situations, but they do seem to have a habit of voting for people whose music they’re not AS interested in buying. Or maybe they just vote for people whose music the public at large isn’t AS interested in buying. I don’t know whether Phillip will fit into this pattern, but I can picture Jessica, Skylar, and maybe even Colton or Joshua going on to greater success than he. We’ll have to wait and see.

          • tarc says:

@ Miscellaneopolan – I see what you are saying, but that’s not what we were addressing (plus, there is an added complication that you highlight – 19 forcing Hicks and DeWyze to make an album out of genre). I’ve never said these guys were the best sellers in all of Idol, or even in their season. I’ve simply stated that since Idol allows many different styles with a wide diversity of popularity (therefore different markets and different thresholds of ‘success’) that we go with the strightforward ‘do they make a living’ (since a tiny handful of artists in any genre are making the Clarkson/underwood category it’s an absurd standard). Then we have other complications, like Crystal outselling Lee o their first post-Idol albums – but Lee outselling Crystal in album totals (he has 3 more than she does – the new one being released due to high demand for his pre-idol work). Idol sometimes creates a problem, making the contestants sing covers of very popular songs that everyone knows. Thank goodness, that’s happening less and less, but unlike Hicks (who seemed to always be singing Michael McDonald, which no one wants to buy), or Lee (who sounded sqeaky on slightly dated pop standards), P2 did his own thing almost all the way through, and I doubt that Iovine would repeat those old mistakes (and I doubt that Phillip would do it). And really, with the right material (and it’s always always song selection) any of these guys could do really well.

        • smidnite says:

Always? As with Fantasia? Or Taylor?

      • Spider3tattoo says:

You must be forgetting that AMERICA voted her off in week 7 was it? She was only there because of the judges’ save, not because America saved her.

        • Cris says:

America got it wrong when she as voted-off. And America realized its mistake by NOT voting her off on the redux up to the finale. If America got it right the first time, then she would easily have been voted off on the redux.

    • ivy says:

jessica had been performing at a level above the rest all season long. phillip just happen to improve those last few weeks and people noticed. hence the praises.

  23. T_T says:

lol. Another season ended. Will just wait for the remaining Idologies to come. :)

  24. Faz says:

This was not a great top 12 — as the performances tonight kind of made clear. Most were so very weak. Oh well. I can’t say I love P2, but I can’t say that there was much competion. Geez louise.

    • Snsetblaze says:

Yeah, that tribute to Robin Gibb was painful. Someone – deAndre in think – was offkey and did not blend just about the entire number.

      • smidnite says:

That Neil Diamond thing was just as hard on the eyes. That was the cheesiest choreography was about the worst I’ve ever seen.

        • TC says:

I agree. And I love Neil Diamond music but to choose “Sweet Caroline” as the closing number was just awful. Of all the beautiful songs he has written, they choose that cheesey song? And why do the AI producers keep shoving J-Lo performances down our throats?? The whole time I was fast forwarding thru her performance, I kept saying that this was another five minutes that they could have used on another Joshua performance-something I would have much rather watched. She may be pretty but she can’t sing to save her life

Who runs the world?!! White guys – with guitars!!! (WGWG)

  26. Sam says:

  27. ali427 says:

Where was Elise’s duet with a star?? I was hoping for Stevie Nicks . . .

    • srm8484 says:

      Amen!

    • deedee says:

Where was the Donna Summer medley with Jessica and Kristen Chenoweth doing “Enough is Enough”?

    • Amy says:

I know that they’ve pretty much always done it so that only the top 5 got duets, but I’m so annoyed that Elise and Colton didn’t get their own performances; that was pretty much the only reason I was looking forward to the finale. How hard could it have been to get rid of all that random filler about the judges and include more actual singing? If Elise and Colton got to do a duet with each other, I would have died of happiness.

  28. shelbybb says:

Congratulations Phillip! I can’t wait to be at your first solo tour. Georgia is so proud of you in every way!
    See ya next year Michael!
Don’t care to read any hate on such a good night!

  29. Johanna says:

I do hope Michael does an interview with Jessica.

  30. alainers258 says:

    the curse lives on

  31. Ansa says:

The announcment of the winner seem anti-climactic after the Jessica Jenifer Halliday duet. I am pretty happy with the outcome. I don’t think Jessica needed the crown. I don’t think Phillip need it either after that kind of exposure but with the right songs Jessica can be another Kelly Clarkson!

    • Ablo says:

That duet was the worst thing I’ve ever seen on tv (or maybe the best) — I don’t think I have ever laughed so much. For the rest of our lives, that will be shown — you won’t be able to escape the horror. Oh my!

      • RodMod says:

You don’t know what SANNNGING is.

        • Ablo says:

No, but I do know what singing is. And you can’t possibly say that was not the strangest thing you have ever seen on TV.

          • tarc says:

LOL! That was fairly tame – interesting, but not even remotely close.

          • J. May says:

I thought the duet was amazing, stupendous and insanely great, but I have to confess that I remarked to my wife that Ms. Holliday’s upper mouth seemed to have a life of its own. And those eyes, those eyes…

      • McFudge says:

They were scaring me. It started out fine, but after awhile I was ready to call the nice men with the white coats.

        • susela says:

My husband walked in during the duet and said, “I just hate what they are doing with that.” A moment later he said, “Now they are scaring me.” Songs like that are why Jessica lost and why Joshua came in third. Simply not the taste of mainstream America.

      • givemeglenn says:

Yeah, I kind of thought there was a stroke on the stage once or twice…

      • fiona says:

The facial expressions were strange but MANNNNN I think i was making faces along with them as they killed the song…. sighh if only this was the song that decided the winner (And anyone else notice Phil wasn’t in any of the guy group songs, jessica was in at least one of them)

        • Ablo says:

No, it wasn’t good singing. It was crazy singing. There’s a huge difference. Now granted, it’s a horrible song that’s been overdone for 20 years — but still. The facial expressions made the song. Without them . . . .

          • fiona says:

i meant killed as in amazing!

          • Mary B says:

Okay grant you it was a incredible performance but how much of that can you listen to and can you plan an album of that kind of singing on the radio….Jennifer Holiday, was kind of scary looking and if I was Jessica I would have been scared out of my wits. LOL

          • ivy says:

that was the best performance ever on idol history. can’t remember any others coming close.

      • Pop Culture Bystander says:

I was afraid that Ms Holliday was going to eat Ms Sanchez right up. I don’t mean that as a metaphor. I mean really real eat her right up. And yet, I did the Melinda Dolittle jump to my feet at the key change.

        • tarc says:

OMG. The better half and I were saying the exact same thing. jennifer Holliday was amazing… and terrifying, and you could see Jessica getting better as they sang. Life experience… it works.

        • TheBeach says:

Jennifer Holliday’s eyes went demonic by the end. I fully expected her to burst into flames.

      • Mary B says:

Worse than Fantasia. She scared the life out of me. OMG! What was she wearing?

        • Jaxguy says:

Fantasia was HORRIBLE. That my friends was screaming. Chaka Khan was great. Jennifer and Jessica incredible. The people who truly thought was bad have to be Phillip fans.

        • tarc says:

You know I like Joshua, but that Duet was a screaming hot mess. Total ugly disaster. And that wasn’t quite as bad as Fantasia’s outfit.

          • C says:

Amen to that! I’ve always thought Fantasia’s singing (if you can call it that) is awful.

          • darcy the slutty twin says:

And to be honest, I hated what he did at the last part of the BeeGees tribute. This was not the time to make it all about himself. It was a tribute to a recently departed music icon. I thought he could’ve been more respectful and not “take it to church,” instead he had me muttering “way to stay classy, hollerating during a tribute.”

      • Barbara says:

ITA!!! It was painful watching them and that screatchy singing!! We were cringing during the whole thing!!

    • Sha says:

true, that duet was insane in the best possible way! All I could do was gasp. The highlight of the entire show for me and well worth the wait.

      • Yo' says:

That was amazing! Jennifer Holliday just reached down Jessica’s throat and pulled a big ole’ song out of it. She made Jessica fight for it, and Jessica fought hard.

    • WishesRandyCouldn'tSpeak says:

THIS! Hahah I know right? After that point I litterally looked at my brother and was like “K I’m satisfied, I feel like I have won just watching this”. hahaha too great of a performance, it helped me be OK with Phil winning :D

  32. Renda says:

I have a feeling the voting wasn’t even close…otherwise ryan would have said how many votes separated the two.

    • gailer says:

I agree. She was voted off once before, he was never in the bottom.

      • Mary B says:

But dial idol had them really, really close. I really thought Jessica was going to win. I had my mind pretty msde up on it. I was as surprised as he was

        • susela says:

Dial idol’s been waaay off all season. They’re only sampling phone calls—and the younger people who vote a couple of hundred times are probably texting or voting online.

      • Mary B says:

Dial Idol showed them extremely close. Is a possibility that it showed up like that because of all the votes coming in from foreign countries that were eventually eliminated but still showed up as busy signals?

        • NR says:

I don’t think so filipinos wont waste their time by downloading dial idol they only care about Jessica. But I think they were really close its just that they didn’t have enough time and what good would it do Jessica to know the difference?

  33. Beth says:

I don’t know if a girl will ever win Idol again if Jessica couldn’t beat Phillip, but oh well. Congratulations to Phillip Phillips and his fans. He had a good run from Top 4 to the finale.

  34. Phillip was all emotion you could tell as he couldn’t stay on pitch most of the night. Jessica? cool and did the best number of the night with Jennifer Holiday. But after Phillip won, sang one verse, cried and took off his guitar to be enveloped by his family. One big poster said it all ” Phillip, you are beautiful” Yup…not as talented as Jessica, Joshua, Skylar, etc but he is beautiful. Sighhhhh…

    • pg says:

P2 couldn’t stay on pitch most of the SEASON. But I’d have been shocked if he hadn’t won. It was extremely predictable when he only got praising and kept getting votes despite horribly weak performances. Meh, whatever, AI. Whatever.

      • tarc says:

He was on pitch all season. I mean you do follow that there are recordings of all of these songs than can be checked, right?

        • Jaxguy says:

tarc you would praise him if he farted on stage for 2 minutes. He sang like crap all season. The only song that wasn’t horrbile was the simple copy cat original song from last night that thousands of his ilk could perform just as well and probably better. He’s gonna be a bust.

          • Marsaili says:

Hey Jax—3 words: YOU ARE WRONG. 132 million votes—America loves Phillip—and not for the nasty reasons you devised, they love him because he’s talented, he’s a good guy, he’s talented, he’s humble and he’s fought harder than anyone to get where he is. Sorry you didn’t win—of course, no matter who won, you’d still be a miserable, nasty person spreading lies and hate wherever you go. Phillip won. YOU lost. Didn’t you say you were leaving–you know what they say about the door………

I have so lost my patience with these hateful, nasty people.

          • darcy the slutty twin says:

I don’t get the nastiness. Both Phillip and Jessica were consistently good for most of the season. Bum notes were few and far between. To say Phillip can’t sing on key/on-pitch or whatever, is beyond ridiculous. He did not show that he has the range that Jessica or David Cook have, but when he sings, it’s on key/on pitch/in tune. The end.

          • tarc says:

Hmmm. Yes, he’s so very bad he WON, and consistently stayed out of the bottom group, and he consistently sold the most singles. Might I mention, he WON. Perhpas you should consider that you might be missing something rather large. Horse… water… meh.

        • pg says:

You mean the recordings in a studio that can be edited and re-recorded and tweaked with? Right. I meant the live performances, sweetheart. You’re more than welcome to enjoy P2 and his music; different strokes for different folks and all that jazz. But do not think you could pay me enough to agree with you that he was on pitch all season. I have ears. I know what I heard. And I definitely wasn’t the only one who heard it. And it wasn’t good. He was pitchy on several occasions, his voice was weak and shaky more often than not, his falsetto sucks elephant butt and his voice is the weak cousin to Dave Matthews’. He may be the nicest guy in the world, he seems to have mostly good taste in music, he may even be a very good musician and his “packaging” may be more generally appealing. But, if you go by the “this is a SINGING competition” bs that those horrible judges keep trying to hammer into people’s brains, he was the least deserving of the title in the top 6. But that’s ok. Winning this “singing competition” hasn’t meant much in several years anyway, so good luck to P2! Really, good luck. May you break the curse so that the die-hard fans you have now stay with you after the AI tour!

          • tarc says:

I hear you, but I’ll just point out that the pro reviewers at the NYTimes and the daily Beast (the only two pro reviews that I can remember at the moment) said his pitch was good live. Different people have their ear for music developed differently, but I’ve not seen a single review anywhere that didn’t agree that Phillips deserved the title. Obviously, America also thought Phil was pretty great.

          • Marsaili says:

I was thrilled to read the reviews! There was only one review I read that was negative—I don’t remember what source it was but they were pissed it wasn’t Joshua and basically ignored the fact that Phillip won. Every news article I read otherwise had really good things to say about Phillip and I was very happy about that, especially with all the hate floating around the ‘net.

            I also learned a few things I wasn’t aware of previously like the fact that;

            1) Phillip’s family doctor saw him at the home visit and did everything he could to convince Phillip to have the surgery immediately—but he refused. He will most likely be going for surgery in the next week to give him time to heal before the tour.
            2) He had a stent put in during top12 week, (I believe) and apparently it’s so painful that it’s even hard to stand—which is why he is sitting a lot of the time and SO awkward on stage during group numbers.
            3) He seriously thought Jessica was going to win–he admitted that he isn’t a great singer like Jessica but he also said he’s not trying to be—to him it’s about the MUSIC that he makes, and makes with other people and the story that he is telling. He has no problem being labeled a WGWG and he is thrilled to be counted among the other WGWG that have won. He said his goal isn’t to be super-famous or rich, he just wants people to have a chance to hear his music and hopefully enjoy it, too!
            4) He did NOT have much of a choice with his original song choice—he said that basically it was chosen for him but he liked it and had no problem performing it—but it is nothing like the music he writes so he doesn’t want people to think he’ll be putting out an album like that song (Home).
            5) His girlfriend has no problem with female fans and isn’t threatened by them at all. Apparently, she is used to girls/women fawning over her man but it isn’t as big of an issue as it’s made out to be.
            6) His family couldn’t afford to fly out for the finale so businesses in their hometown held weekly raffles and sales and stuff to raise money to send them all—they would have something like Phillip Wednesday where the profits for that day were donated to the fund! They also got donations from all over the country! They are a hard working family, who are SO grateful for everything that has happened to Phil and proud beyond belief! I am too :-)

          • pg says:

@tarc America (or the furiously multi-time-voting portion of it anyway) does seem to agree with you. I just really don’t, which is usually the case anyway. And I’m not slamming him as a person. I’m not even slamming him as a singer in general. The issues I have with him are strictly related to his singing in a competition which is supposedly about singing, especially in a season when so many others were better singers. As I said, in the top 6, the other five were all better vocalists. And, if we go for the whole “artistry” thing, I may not have been Colton’s biggest fan but I think he trumps P2 in that too. That performance of Time of the Season alone should have sent him packing, it was so painful to listen to. But I actually enjoyed his cover of Volcano. Even though it pales a lot when compared to the wonder that is the original, it was still, imo, his best performance all season. Jessica wasn’t even my favorite (I have a history of “losing” my favorites early on, with the exception of Adam, who still didn’t win) so this isn’t an angry Jessica fan thing either. I just think that, given the choice of the two, it’s a no-brainer who the best SINGER is. And I also think Jessica got thrown songs at her that put her at a disadvantage. Regardless, I think it could turn out to be a good thing for Jessica that she didn’t win (she’s maybe too young for the crown) and I do hope this is a good start to P2’s pro career. He seems like a nice enough guy and he may even come to surprise some of the people angry with his win.

          • tarc says:

@ pg – Hmmm. I think the thing I try and explain (probably not well enough), is that it’s very hard to evaluate who is a better singer, then most younger Americans are trained to think ‘singing’ is one thing (we’ll say pop, or diva-pop). They have no ear for blues, or bluegrass, or Celtic, or (especially) jazz. When Casey Abrams came on, America acted like he was some kind of alien life form, complete with screming in the streets from his tics and ‘growling’. Then Casey and Haley whipped out the collest jazz most have every heard and a year later, attitudes changed. I pull out the example of Billie Holliday versus Christina Aguilera: who is the better singer? There’s no contest for me – Billie by a million times. And it’s certain that no one would ever accuse her of being a technical singer. Like Billie, Phillip doesn’t require a perfectly clear tone or vocal acrobatics to be an excellent singer in his genre (or overall). Unless people are familiar with this type of music, they simply cannot be a fair judge. People are certainly entitled to their opinions, but I try and get across to folks that they might be missing something important here. And I agree – I hope Phillip (and Jessica and Joshua) do great. And I’d be thrilled to hear from Skylar, Colton and Elise.

  35. Marsaili says:

Well, all you WGWG crappers can go watch The X Factor or something else–Phillip won, and he didn’t win because he was cute–your lame-ass excuse you like to use because you can’t fathom the idea that people ACTUALLY LIKE HIS MUSIC. Jessica is going to be just fine—we all know that–so take your hate and stuff it—because the person who won is a great guy, massively talented—he might not have the range of Jessica or Joshua but he’s not that type of singer and neither did tons of other famous, beloved stars. Jessica is a beautiful, massively talented wonderful girl and she’s going to go places as well. Congrats to both!

    • chris thomas says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you.

    • darcy the slutty twin says:

Agreed. Phillip is relevant right now and Jessica will be getting the guidance that she needs. I think both are winners. I’m so happy for Phillip!

      • nerd4life says:

and Scotty Mccreery and Lee DeWyze, do people like their music as well? It is not a lame ass excuse when it is the truth. The first time it happened (David Cook), he was a deserving winner, the second time with Kris Allen is a coincidence, the third time with Lee is “Okay, something is a little fishy here” especially considering that it is a hard case to make that Lee was a deserving winner, now with the fourth and fifth times with Scotty and now Phillip, it is a trend and a fact. WGWG win Idol sometimes because they are legit good (David and Kris), but they also win because teenage girls vote 800 times a night for the guy they think is the hottest. That is how you get 135 million votes for the finale when you average 18 million viewers for the season. This is nothing against Phillip as I really do think he is a nice guy, and he did have some good performances on the show, but anyone who thinks that he deserved to win over Jessica or Joshua because they truly think he is the better singer is just kidding themselves.

        • Beth says:

I’m sorry but I don’t believe this teen girl scapegoat thing. My little sister is 14 and she does not care about Idol at all, and neither do any of her friends. Idol’s demographic is getting older and older, the days of David Archuleta are done.

          • gailer says:

Totally agree. I don’t know any teens who watch this show. Don’t blame it on teens.

          • Mary B says:

My granddaughter is 14 andshe does not watch idol nor do any of her friends.

        • Faze Craze says:

I am 35. All of my friends who watch Idol have crushes on Phillip. Blame them.

        • Marsaili says:

Scotty is HUGE!!! Maybe you don’t listen to or keep track of country music but Scotty is doing great, he’s touring with the biggest star in country music right now, Brad Paisley (another WGWG–huge star) Lee DeWyze is just about to release an album—one that is true to his roots, not an Idol pop dredge that they forced him to do—Idol ruined Lee—for a minute. He’s working in Nashville now, Nashville loves him and he will be big there. And no, teenage girls did not vote in excess for Lee, Kris or Phillip—that just isn’t true. Yes, there are people that think he is cute—he IS cute, but people don’t vote for Idols just because they are cute—otherwise Jason Castro, Casey James, Stefano, even Justin Guarini would have won—so that isn’t true at all. Scotty didn’t win because of teen aged girls, he won because of the country fans. Phillip DID deserve to win, he is truly an artist. It isn’t just about having the best voice—it’s about the WHOLE package and Phillip is the whole package—-Jessica has a ways to go yet.

          • Owen says:

He won, Maraslli. Okay? And he’s going to go down in flames like most every WGWG you get all tingly for. You are a hot mess, girlfriend.

          • tarc says:

And you are, in general, a liar, Owen. just sayin’.

          • FreeHaley says:

It probably does help a bit though. It’s just human nature. Heck they have stuck babies in rooms with super models and rather less than super models and various men and the male babies all spent a lot more time looking at the super models. And similar story for girl babies, in reverse.

It certainly doesn’t mean that is the only reason or even much of a part of the reason or even any of the reason at all for many, but whne all is said and done it has to play at least a bit of a part. Probably also aided that some guys go against the grain and will vote for guys because they feel safer voting for someone they identify with. Again all of that only explains a bit of it, but a bit of a shift in votes is all it takes and boom 7 out of the last 8 singing contestants have been won by guys (and in at least a few cases most of the musical pundits heavily thought at least one female constestant was much better so it’s not all just that sometimes you flip a coin and do get 7 heads in a row either). But OTOH it is true to not make too much of it, since it plays only a minor to no part for many.

          • FreeHaley says:

Phillip does bring a lot, but I can’t help think maybe his voice is just a tad too limited to really bring the 100% full singing contestant win.

          • smidnite says:

There isn’t enough booze or drugs in the world to make me listen to country music.

        • tarc says:

Yes, people listen to Scotty (not me, but even so) and Lee. All of them won because America *voted*. Male vocals are ‘in’ – do a quick survey of the charts.

          • Owen says:

Dear Lord. I get it now. you were a Lee supporter!! Up until this moment I was actually giving you the benefit of the doubt. That you naively thought Phillip would do well But you are arguing with me precisely because you KNOW I’m right!!!! Lee DeWyze is the extreme version of what I am pontificating against. Oh my God, you poor, poor thing.

          • tarc says:

I’m a fan of Lee’s pre-Idol work yes. It’s awesome. As with Phillp, you have no ear for that kind of music- refer to kreuger Dunning effect.

          • tarc says:

Oh, just FYI – I voted for Crystal in the finale. She was obviously consistently superior to Lee’s performances on Idol. I also bought Crystal’s album, but I didn’t buy Lee’s because I didn’t like him doing pop. I have it though; I was gifted a copy. Neither album is that remarkable. Lee’s Slumberland is awesome though, and is available on iTunes.

          • FreeHaley says:

Well the charts had a female, Adele, like ruling everything at #1 for who knows how long so you can’t say female vocals are out.

          • tarc says:

Um, sure I can. There’s always going to be a plurality (and, honestly, Adele’s enver an example because she breraks all the rules from prettym uch every angle). But an example – 27 of 40 of the iTunes Top 200 singles are male vocals. There were whole decades when that was reverse (sometimes more strongly even). And it’s not like I made this up, or say it’s an original observation – there have been a number of articles about it.

    • givemeglenn says:

Great point, especially after listening to Aerosmith sing tonight…are all these people going to claim that Jessica’s greatest “cheerleader” (Stephen Tyler) was singing to their standards, either? Different strokes for different folks.

    • deedee says:

and congrats to Joshua, too. We can’t forget him! He made the season for me and was *hysterical* in the phone book skit. HA! adorable, adorable, adorable. *mwwwah*

    • Mary B says:

Love you Marsali. You tell it like it is and you are so fair.

    • tarc says:

      Sing it, sister!

  36. Davey says:

I have nothing bad to say about Phillip. But Jessica was amazing tonight. Wasn’t she supposed to do a song with Kristin Chenoweth.

    • Owen says:

Why do people keep bringing this up???? Is this true???? And if so WHY DIDN’T IT HAPPEN?????????

      • Mary B says:

something happened and that why Jessica fid the solo. Nobody else did a solo.Maybe

      • googlecat says:

according to a tweet by Kristin Chenoweth: “Apparently AI ran so late the scraped the whole donna summer tribute bc of time. :( bummer.”
They should have done away with Jessica’s solo which we’ve already seen before and proceeded with the duet/group song tribute for Donna Summer, whichever it was. AI continues to make terrible decisions.

        • FreeHaley says:

They had time for yet another JLO performance and for, an apparently fake proposal, and yet no time for that tribute or some sort of Elise+Colton duet at the least???

    • TheBeach says:

Jessica did seem to get her fair share of solos and duets last night. Maybe they thought that was enough but I would have appreciated a Donna Summer tribute from someone or group. I would have much preferred that to the Neil Diamond snooze fest.

  37. ray says:

I’m with you on most things Slezak, but it’s not that odd to only feature the top 5 in duets/solos. Also if they give Erika a moment, then they would have needed to give one to everyone in the Top 10. Besides, I heard enough of Colton in the medleys. Though to be fair that isn’t the sort of music that fits his voice.

    • Sha says:

they always give the top five contestants a celeb duet. sixth place forward are just in the groups

      • MA says:

Not true. Casey was 6th and got a duet last year.

        • Amy says:

Oh right, I forgot about that. Well, that just makes me even more annoyed about this finale. We don’t watch AI to see random dancers and “funny” bits; we watch to hear the contestants sing. How hard could it have been to get rid of the filler and limit J.Lo and Steven Tyler to just one song each and let at least Elise and Colton have their own duets?

          • SnsetblazeI says:

Or better yet, not have J-Lo sing at all since the songs were crap, she is not a good singer and it looked like she was lip syncing.

          • FreeHaley says:

Hmm yeah Casey did get a duet too. So they really did dump on Elise, she didn’t even get much prom in the group numners. Maybe they didn;t want her to show anyone up. Idol sucks, they always hate on her type.

          • MA says:

I could have done without JLo, that stupid proposal, Rhianna, and the Bee Gees medley. That would’ve left plenty of time for both Elise and Colton, who deserved much more attention than they got. I also thought that Elise, Skylar, and Joshua really stood out in the group numbers; they were just so much looser and better than the rest, many of whom looked very stiff to me.

        • Barbara says:

Casey was third. Remember he had a homecoming and then rocked it with Brett michaels?

    • TheBeach says:

My thoughts: Another J-Lo performance this season? And two songs at that. Cut one of Steven’s songs. Cut the Steven home visit and the silly Iovine Jessica/Jennifer crap. Can that embarrassing proposal. Add a Donna Summer tribute. I was fine with having a Robin Gibb tribute but it was not good. Give Colton and Elise more air time. And I had forgotten just how good Erika was until I heard her last night.

  38. minikittykitty says:

I think the right contestant won. I just wished there were more contestants singing.

  39. Laa says:

I don’t think Whitney Houston in her prime could win Idol.

  40. McFudge says:

Congrats to Phillip. I hope he’s ok. Didn’t seem like he felt at all well tonight. It was awfully sweet how emotional he got. And I just love the families.

  41. NikkiQM says:

Im just tuning out Philip winning … still relieving Jessica’s performance with Jennifer Holiday. Clearly the true winner in my book.

  42. alex says:

that duet of j.hol & j.san was the ONLY suuuuper epic performance 0n that night. I like philip though

  43. Jessica wins says:

If they allowed Jessica to sing last night like she did tonight she would have won hands down.
    Booooooooo!

  44. Becky says:

There was one person who consistently stole the show every time he set foot on the stage, and that was Joshua Ledet.

  45. chris thomas says:

Usually love the finale show, but I did a lot of fast-forwarding tonite: J-Lo, Rihanna, phonebook song, Aerosmith, Fantasia, everytime Randy spoke, etc. Congrats to Phillip! Time to download Home.

    • JB says:

I thought the phonebook song was actually pretty cute/funny. Love when they poke fun at Randy.

      • 5talentgirl says:

The phonebook song was probably the best part of the whole show. I’m a fan of all the contestants but I thought the whole show was an embarassing flop. The production team blew it.

      • Sha says:

I’m all for some extra Joshua singing, even if it is a silly phonebook and is meant to poke fun at his “takin it to church”.

  46. MA says:

    Dear Nigel…you inglorious bastard…
Where the FRAK was Elise’s duet?? We sat through JLo and a marriage proposal, and nary a full song from the queen? Are you kidding me?!
    No love,
    MA
    ***
In other news, congrats to Phillip. Well done, man. Great winner’s song. Please go get healthy now.

    • srm8484 says:

Amen to all of the above!

    • the real wendy says:

YES! MA has it by a nose!

    • Mary B says:

BTW. That marriage proposal made me want to barf. Sorry guys it was not real. I read how they were engaged a couple of weeks ago. I even posted it on this site. It was in a special Peoples magazine anout idol. When she got all choked up I said to myself now that is acting. Cute though but all totally scripted.

      • MA says:

I thought I’d read that a few weeks ago too!! The proposal was gross.

      • SnsetblazeI says:

It was annoying. And he looked like a cocker spaniel.

        • darcy the slutty twin says:

Seriously. I’ve always thought his hair looked like dog ears even during his Idol days. Now it’s even longer and “cocker spaniel” is the perfect description.

      • darcy's evil twin says:

Thanks – when they showed DeGarmo and Ace Young in the audience I told my husband they were engaged. I knew I’d read it someplace. It was at the hairdresser and I read it in People. now I also remember reading it here.

      • TheBeach says:

It was an embarrassing waste of precious air time.

    • Meghan says:

I was waiting for an awesome duet for Elise (much like Haley and Tony Bennet’s gorgeous performance last year). Sorely disappointed.

  47. jcs says:

All the wgwg whining is getting tiresome…phillip was the better, more original performer, and while Jessica has a great voice, she had no personality and made some mediocre song choices. Congrats, PP!

    • Amy says:

Agree about all the wgwg stuff. Actually thought about this today…if it was a different race we wouldn’t even be allowed to say that..much less make that generalization that he was chosen for that. I think P2 was judged by the content of his music ability, originality, and how much people enjoyed him and want to buy his music.

    • Tommyo2000 says:

As is the Jessica has no personality. And Phillip had some pretty awful song choices and performances… Your guy won … Be happy and talk about him… No need to bash the kid who lost..

      • Sha says:

funny how a reserved personality gets misread as having “no personality”. I didn’t know it was possible to have no personality.

      • tarc says:

Jessica didn’t lose – Tommy matolla is producing her first record with Iovine. She didn’t get the cash prize, but she and Joshua are already signed – just like Phillip. And Jessica even got a selection of a new car. Phillip maybe the (the well-deserved) Idol, but the Top 3 won this week.

        • Tommyo2000 says:

Yeah, I know that … just trying to get people to focus on what they liked about their person … Phillip won AI and if you are a fan of his then enjoy and talk about what you love about him … no need to puke up tired cliches about jessica … BTW I thought she came off fabulous the whole evening , in her singing, in her speaking, in her outfits … Frankly she was the star of this evening …

          • Marsaili says:

And her grace and pure joy for Phillip—she is a beautiful girl and she’s going to be a fabulously beautiful woman!

          • Mary B says:

I totally agree. I really loved Jessica in the finale. I thought her and Phillip were really sweet together and I saw Jessica come out of her shell and she was such a gracious loser and genuinely seemed delighted for Phillip. She spoke to a reporter later and said how much he deserved it and how hsrd he faught through the whole thing. I know she was referring to continuing while being in so much pain. I think all his fellow contestants admired him for that. Anyway I think Jessica is going to be fine and I know I will follow her career as well as Phillips. They are all such great kids this year and you can really see how they have all become friends. I said this before, we can all learn something from these kids.

          • Sha says:

Phillip may have won the title but Jessica won the night, she was the star of the whole episode for me (for you).

      • Marsaili says:

Jessica has an adorable personality–watch the red carpet interviews and the behind the scenes stuff, she is cute as a button! Her red carpet interview with Pia Toscano was adorable!

    • stacy says:

Oh yes, the “no personality” argument. It can’t be that people are just always going to have a favorable opinion of men over women. A shy guy is “cute”, a shy girl is “boring”. A mean guy is a “bad boy”, a mean girl is a “B”. and on and on and on.
Honestly, have you ever said a man has “no personally”? And if so, I bet you have used that phrase WAY more to describe women.

    • Jaxguy says:

this is the reason for the wgwg stuff. comments like yours. I never liked his performances ever. I have seen hundreds like him at every open mic night in every bar in America. He is not original. If you like him that’s fine, but original? His influences were many. Even the judges alluded to that all season Jessica is not original. A brilliant singer, but not original. There are few if any originals anymore; Phillip is just another coffee house singer and the country is full of them. He’s not even a very good singer.

    • Bobbi says:

I think anyone who complains about the WGWG should look in the mirror when they criticize Jessica for having no personality. Soft spoken is not lacking personality. She also had less segments because she was in school. Just look at the “American Idol Press Conference w. Jessica Sanchez & Phillip Phillips” on youtube. You’ll see Jessica being herself, and acting quite gracious towards Phillip. She’s a great girl!

  48. Amy says:

    The right guy won.
    Loved him all season.
Really touched when he couldn’t finish and left the stage to go hug his fam. Anyway…Go P2! Tks for a thoroughly entertaining Season 11 run.
And the guy stayed original and true to himself to the end. Seems more artist than Idol, but now he’s got both on his side. Hope they serve him well…that Idol machine can be wonky.
Best of Luck to Phil~ I am looking forward to more more more music and concerts!

Props to Jessica too, who SA-LAYYed “I Am Telling You” alongside the diva herself. I don’t even like the song, and I was impressed.

    This was a great season.

  49. Cal405 says:

After watching her sing tonight with Jenifer Holiday, how can you not be pissed at the songs they chose for Jessica last night? only two conclusions can be made: 1) they have no idea what to do with a singer like her; 2) they undermined her

Philip is good at what he does and shows real soul in his music. Jessica is a 16-year old wunderkind who has a chance to be one of the biggest stars in the world.

    • Yo' says:

Jennifer Holliday pretty much wiped the floor with her, actually. Voice for voice, she was much more powerful. She brought out the best in Jessica, she brought out some passion, but she also showed what Jessica was not.

      • deedee says:

Yo’ you hit it on the head. I was thinking this exact thing while watching the duet (which was HOT!). — Jennifer Holiday brought out Jessica’s personality for the first time all season. She has it in her, she just needs to dig deep and find it.

        • tarc says:

Yes, it was so cool. It showed exactly what I’ve been saying Jessica was missing (and, simultaneously, just how good she is) – and we got the really fascinating experince of watching her *grow* as a singer in real time. Jesscica was also such a class act, and she was so happy for Phillip she proved to be that she’s got the heart under there to show us. I so agree with Jimmy: she’ll be terrifyingly good in a couple years.

        • SnsetblazeI says:

I was also thinking that during the duet. I was thinking that vibrant to hear more of Jennifer (and where has she been?) not Jessica. I was thinking that she did bring some spark from Jessica and the only other time we saw that was in the Vegas group. I was also thinking old like to see Jennifer Holiday and Jennifer Hudson duet on that song. Now that would have been a battle.

      • Adam says:

No, Jessica blew the Cowardly Lion, I mean Holliday off the stage. Towards the end Jessica had a solo run that Holliday tried to follow failed utterly, showing the limits of what face-pulling can bring to a song.

      • Davey says:

What are you talking about? Jessica was matching her but also showed she knows when to pull back with restraint whereas Jennifer Holliday has none. More Jessica bashing, even after the show is done. Enough.

      • Jaxguy says:

Wow. I thought they were great together. I don’t think she wiped the floor with Jessica. Then the same thing could be said for John Fogerty

      • jw says:

Completely agree. It was like I was watching the student learn from the master on the spot. Jessica started with perfect pronunciation and ended with yuhs instead of yous, etc. But in the end, Holliday’s performance came from the gut and Jessica’s came from the head.

        • FreeHaley says:

I do agree a bit. And yeah Jessica probably would done better on Idol at 18 or 19. That said she has quite a voice and was one of the best this year, I think only Elise or Josh gave her a run at all.

    • kcostell says:

Good as Jessica’s Top 4 week performance was…imagine if they had had Holliday in as a guest mentor that week to show Jessica some of what she pulled off tonight.
