As Cougar Town Bosses Step Down, Creator Bill Lawrence Asks Fans to 'Chill'

Cougar Town‘s new cable home on TBS won’t be the only change for the show next season. It will also have a new leader.

Co-creators Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel will be stepping down from to day-to-day showrunner duties on the comedy series, now wrapping its third season on ABC, Vulture reports.

Star Courteney Cox broke the news to the site, saying, “[Season 4] is a fresh start. It will feel like the same show, but we’re going to have a new [showunner], there will be new people, new changes.”

The move isn’t a complete surprise. Lawrence’s development deal with Warner Bros. TV last year called for the producer to leave his top post at Cougar Town after Season 3 to focus on new projects. Still, Lawrence maintains that he and Biegel will be involved in the show’s renaissance on TBS.

“A.) chill. B.) neither Kev nor I currently have shows, so we will both work on CT, C.) if we do get shizz going, we need great guy in place,” Lawrence tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

so pretty much its gonna be like Scrubs Med School? Ill pass if there is no Laurie,Travis,Bobby,Grayson which it kinda sounds like there wont be

    • ScrubsGuy says:

According to earlier interviews, TBS is paying the same licensing fees, so full cast + writers are supposed to be back. Even in Scrubs Med School, BL helmed it as show runner, so it’s actually very different from what’s happening here.

    • Scrubs/CT says:

no one said anything about those characters leaving

    • Jacob says:

Where did you hear this? Ridiculous.

      • ggny says:

if you guys think all of the cast members are gonna be back full time you are crazy. There is no way TBS is gonna pay for all of them to come back full time. Im betting its just like Scrub Med School

        • ghoti says:

You got a link or any evidence? I have seen nothing about cast changes.

          • ggny says:

Of course there isnt the show doesnt return for 6+ months

          • ggny says:

Im was just trying to say is that im betting half of the cast doesnt return full time. they might return for a few episode here and there but that is it im betting

Troll-oll-oll-oll-oll. TBS is planning on using this as their BIG show, they will not make changes that would compromise the fan base they hope to take. Your comments are based on either wanting to stir up trouble or a severe wedgie you need to look into.

          • KevyB says:

No kidding! There are a whopping SEVEN people on this show, and Courteney is probably the only one making real change from it. The others aren’t exactly A-Listers and they would still be on their original contracts. Scrubs fell apart because they were many seasons in and some of the people started feeling a little too famous and wanted out.

    • Kate says:

The whole cast is coming back. They made it clear all along that even the actors who shot new pilots would be back if Cougar Town was renewed. Bill has even tweeted since the TBS news that all cast members will be back. That’s what paying the same licensing fee means, it covers the cost of making the show!

      • Ava says:

Exactly! I actually heard TBS was only willing to pick it up IF all of the cast members were still dedicated to keeping it alive.

    • ElKabong says:

Ah, the old Make Up Facts and then Get Upset About Those Facts game.

  2. Hojana says:

Will give it a fair shot.

  3. raftrap says:

I trust Bill Lawrence, if he says chill, I’ll chill, that is all.

  4. ghoti says:

I liked Scrubs: Med School. The worst thing in that show was JD.

    • raftrap says:

I agree, they should have made it all about Eliza Coupe and the guy playing her boyfriend, but it was nevertheless a fun show.

  5. Ram510 says:

As long ad the show is still funny I don’t care who’s running the show honestly

  6. Kel says:

    Double Frick!

CT is hilarious as is and I hope we don’t lose any of the cul de sac crew in the move to TBS.

  7. Robby Jon says:

The show is going to be the same. Bill just wrote a new show called Like Father that was so post to be on Fox but it didn’t get picked up. That being said I’m sure they are going to try to tweak the show and pitch it again. Which means he needs time to work on it, and he just wants to make sure that CT doesn’t miss a step.

  8. Amy says:

They had hoped the season finale hype would pump up the ratings. I can’t believe it sank like a stone. Where did the fans go? TBS isn’t going to save this show! Say goodbye now.

    • Jennifer says:

Lets see, the show didn’t come back until waaay after the xmas break, it was switched to a new night after a terrible lead in show, and as much as I love the show it was rather hit or miss this season (though it did pick up the last few episodes). The diehards waited around and watched for it, but the fickle fans that only watched it because it was on after modern family didn’t bother trying to find it.

    • Jen says:

It wasn’t the season finale. The finale doesn’t air until 5/29.

  9. c.b. says:

After Scrubs B.L. has earned a lifetime of goodwill from me. So I will continue to watch CT and w/e other show he creates.

  10. Belle says:

Two current cast members have pilot’s that were picked up…so it’s possible they don’t return to the show with the Bossmen too. ABC blew it in season 2 by not showing CT the love and support it does to other shows. I don’t see how this show can go on successfully without the current cast, in full, it would NEVER be the same :( sadly the little show that could, is offcially going to end after 1 shortened season on TBS.

    • Jen says:

Some of the cast did have pilots that were picked up…but it’s the same as Damon Wayons Jr. with New Girl/Happy Endings. I could be wrong, but I thought that I read where they said the entire cast will be back.

    • Kate says:

Everyone will be back. The actors who did pilots had them in second position which means that their original show comes first. In ither words if CT and the pilot get picked up, the actor must stay with CT and the pilot show has to recast. As someone pointed out that is what happened with Daman Wayans, when Happy Endings got renewed his part in the pilot of New Girl had to be recast. TBS bought CT with the stipulation that everyone was coming back, so lets end the made up drama about half the cast leaving!

  11. Amanda From Michigan says:

It’s not uncommon for cast members of bubble shows to look for other work. We just didn’t hear about it in the past. It’s okay. Promise.

  12. Mikael says:

The entire cast WILL be back! They were all present at the TBS announcement of CT’s move to their network. They wouldn’t have all the actors come out on the stage if some weren’t coming back. And as for some of them appearing in other pilots, their contracts with CT comes first, so because CT got renewed, they have to come back and those pilots have to recast. How do people still not get this?
