American Idol Top 3 Tackle Judges' and Jimmy's Picks: Who Earned a Spot in the Finale?

You’ve got to hand it* to Randy Jackson: I can’t think of anyone else in the history of reality televion who could select a song for a contestant on a singing competition, then proceed to mess up its title live, on camera. (*And by “it,” I may or may not be referring to a pink slip.)

Yet that’s exactly what the Dawg did when he announced that Joshua Ledet would be covering “I’d Rather Be Blind” (which is actually called “I’d Rather Go Blind”) during American Idol‘s Top 3 performance night. Yes, folks, weep while you contemplate how much the “third judge” has stowed away in his checking account over the last 11 seasons.

But enough about Randy and his ilk! We’ve got to dish the final nine Season 11 performances before the two-part season finale. I’ll post a full recap of the proceedings on Thursday right here at TVLine.com, but until then, here are just a few pithy thoughts on what just went down.

Judges’ Choice
Joshua Ledet: Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” (picked by Randy) | I think I was feeling Joshua’s duds — black jacket with white stitching and red button holes, gray vest, red shirt, red rose accessory — a little more than the performance. But given that it was the outfit of the season (men’s division), that’s not too much of a knock on the vocal, which was solid, but perhaps just a wee bit disconnected.

Jessica Sanchez: Mariah Carey’s “My All” (picked by J.Lo) | The most challenging number of the night, and unfortunately, that was evident in the way Jessica seemed to be just under the note for at least a third of the song. To take out of context part of Jessica’s post-performance comment: “I wouldn’t have picked that song for myself.” Oh girl, I wouldn’t have picked it for you, either, unless I wanted an all-guy finale.

Phillip Phillips: The Four Seasons’/Madcon’s “Beggin” | It’s funny, when Jessica doesn’t give Randy a “moment moment moment,” he’s all over her like a baby to a bottle of formula. But when Phillip gives a decent but not particularly memorable performance, we get references to a “Phil Phillips concert.” (Also, who gave Randy permission to shorten Phillip’s name to Phil?)

Contestant’s Choice
Joshua Ledet: John Lennon’s “Imagine” | I loved how restrained Joshua’s vocal was here — J.Lo was right that he treated the lyrics like a sermon — but I wish the band’s arrangement had been equal to the task. Imagine this performance with just a piano, and no cheesy string section or sappy background “ahh-ahh-ahh-ahhs”? (It’s easy of you try.)

Jessica Sanchez: Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” | I’m not convinced this is the type of artist Jessica wants to be in a post-Idol world, but her Pocahontas-esque pantsuit and necklace were lovely. (Urgh, that was a total Paula Abdul critique from me.)

Phillip Phillips: Matchbox 20’s “Disease” | I’m not crazy, I’m just a little underwhelmed.

Jimmy’s Choice
Joshua Ledet: Mary J. Blige’s “No! More! DRAMA!” | Church attendance is sure to be down for the next few weeks, because Joshua took us there and back, then back again, then Baptized us all in the name of R&B and raw emotion, so really, there’s no need for a regular service, right? Also, lawdie, he took off his jacket again.

Jessica Sanchez: Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” | Her vocal was as light and pretty as a swarm of butterflies rising from a mountain meadow, but the song didn’t give Jessica the explosive moment of last week’s “And I Am Telling You…” Really, this was a Top 8 or Top 9 kind of performance when she really needed heavy artillery.

Phillip Phillips: Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” | Jimmy may have had to force him into the role of the sensitive romantic, but it definitely worked for him. When Phillip actually follows the melody and hits the notes, the creakiness of his tone can be really evocative. Of all the performances tonight, this was the finest piece of storytelling, and because it closed the show, it might’ve wiped out memories of Phillip’s two prior (and weaker) numbers and earned him a slot in the finale.

Anyhow, I’ll be back to post a full episode recap on Thursday right here at TVLine.com. But until then, hit the comments and tell us who you think deserves to advance to the finale. And for all my Idol news, interviews, and recaps, follow me on Twitter @MichaelSlezakTV!

  1. Honestly can’t understand the priase for Phillips final performance. His limited range and off-key singing are not subjective interpretations. He is by far the worst singer and for the integrity of the show I hope he goes.

    • Listen to the original or Kenny Rogers if you want to hear that song sung well!

      • Faz says:

No one has ever sung that song well.

        • Monto Gawe says:

Philip is easy on the eye and the production value for that number was much better than Joshua’s or Jessica’s last number. Hence, the enraptured comments of the ‘judges’.Yet, THAT SONG, has been sung BETTER by others.

        • allie08 says:

lol. THAT is a fact. Horrible song. Never liked it and tonight was no exception. I don’t understand the insistance that P2 sing melody. To me, his style could perhaps be described as modern atonality. I happen to like it (although Joshua is my favorite).

          • I say vote for anyone other then Joshua who has been shoved down the throat of America. Philip did really good in his 1st song though I am certain the producers wanted him to fail.
Philip is not my favorite of the season but at least he has a personality unlike the other 2 that remain.

          • tarc says:

LOL! No, it couldn’t. I’d suggest a music theory text.

          • Scooter says:

Atonality? Haha. Go listen to John Harbison songs, if you want atonality. Then come back and tell me he sings like that.

          • darcy's evil twin says:

Okay, listen up, You People! I love Bob Seger and “We’ve Got Tonight” is one of my favorite songs. So there. It’s a great song. I am proud to own up to that (but I don’t care for the Kenny Rogers/Sheena Easton version). Haven’t watched the DVR yet, though – I made it throught the first three performances and then fell asleep. Will check back in later.

    • Stan says:

He actually was pretty much in tune. Jessica’s out of tune singing was much more apparent tonight

      • brandy says:

Say what you want about Jessica, but her pitch is almost always right on.

        • Stan says:

Not tonight, it wasn’t. She was sharp in the first and flat in the second…. Go back and listen again

          • J says:

Completely agree. I like Jessica just fine.. but if the judging is based on last night’s performances than she didn’t do as well as the others. Also, she has something about her that I feel is kind of ‘unlikeable’. Slam me for that but the fact is that AI is also a ‘reality’ show so likeability does count.

I don’t love P2.. but I think he might have this.

        • Chris says:

She was more pitchy than usual tonight, though. The first song… it was a quarter-tone flat the whole time

          • Owen says:

Yes, Chris, but you’re a big P2 fan so pitch really shouldn’t matter much to you.

          • Chris says:

Well, in the style that Phillip sings… bluesy rocker type…a lot of the artists sing a little under the pitch… that’s how a lot of artists end up. I’m not saying it’s great, but it’s kind of a color and a style for the music.
With Jessica’s big ballads, the pitch is a lot more apparent because she is singing so high (which Phillip can’t) but she is very exposed up there, so it almost comes across worse to hear her out of tune than Phillip out of tune

          • tarc says:

Pitchy matters to me, but that has nothing to do with Phillip. Besides, he was almost perfect compared to Jessica’s nearly consistently off (tonight), and Joshua’s occasional forays into screechiness.

          • Blank Slate says:

Jessica sounded ridiculously off last night. Very unpleasant to listen to her performances. Off tune, out of of key, boring. I’m sure she will mature into her natural gift but right not it’s not just her voice turning me off. It’s her. Yawn.

          • ivy says:

            she got sore throat :(

        • allie08 says:

not tonight. not only was she off key in all 3 performances, her first song showed an utter lack of breath control & the lyrics were totally inappropriate for a homeschooled 16 year old. Kind of ironic that J-Lo, who criticized her all season for not connecting (or was that Hollie? Doesn’t matter – all the same)chose a song about love and lying next to someone in bed. Really?

          • SH says:

Thank you for bringing up how inappropriate that song was for a 16 year-old girl! I couldn’t even get past the lyrics and listen to her sing. And why exactly did the judges pick that song for her when they continue to mention choosing songs you can relate to???!

          • Jaxguy says:

The Haley syndrome all over again. I was disappointed that JLo picked that song for her. I thought her best the her pick. I’ll be there was ok. Josh was good on his songs, but Imagine was good but David Archuleta was much better. Josh got the best songs. And finally Phil proved he is just an ordinary singer. Bland and middle of the world.

          • Jaxguy says:

middle of the road…That post makes me sound drunk. LOL

          • Sandi says:

Let’s just all agree that there is virtually no song Jessica could sing that has ever been on the Billboard charts where this blog wouldn’t be subjected to a rising round of “It’s too mature for her.”

Since this is probably her last week on Idol, let me say for the last time:

            1. This girl is 16 and cannot help being 16.
            2. The overwhelming frickin’ majority of popular music is about “mature” subject matter and she can’t help that either. If you don’t believe me, go look up the top 100 songs on the charts and try to find 2 that would be appropriate for her to sing.

When I was a kid in the 80s, I would watch Star Search and see 10 year olds in spandex dancing together and 9 year olds singing Whitney Houston’s “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” (or something similar).

Just get over it already. It’s as tired a criticism as “WGWG” and “He’s screeching.” If you don’t have anything original to contribute, why bother?

          • darcy's evil twin says:

Sandi – I don’t have that big of a problem with the whole “the songs are too mature” thing, but what drives me nuts is when Jimmy or the judges say they need to sing “younger” songs and then give them a mature song to sing.

          • darcy's evil twin says:

Oh, and Sandi- thanks for the blast from the past of ten year olds on Star Search singing Whitney Houston songs in spandex.
            Priceless!

          • tarc says:

I don’t think that’s even remotely true, Sandi. Jessica picked an Etta song she recorded in her later 40s, and a song that’s world renown for it’s deep emotional complexity – the precise antithesis of a prodigal 16 year old. And she did well… but not any better than that and we all know why. It’s not her fault she’s placed in his position (hello, Nigel), but she should be more savvy if she wants to win and pick great songs that she can emotionally relate to. When she does that, she really shines. Oh, and the majority of pop music is oriented to people under the age of 24, so I’m not sure what you are trying to say. The greatest power ballads come from female singers that spend a lot more time after the age of 25 than before.

          • allie08 says:

@sandi – of course she can’t help being 16 but the judges did her no favors last night. They tell her to pick songs that she can relate to yet they give her a song that is totally outside of both her personal life experiences AND her technical ability. And yes – I will take you up on your billboard challenge. She would have sounded great singing Stronger,Call Me Maybe would have been more age appropriate, Brighter Than the Sun, Mr. Know it All, Someone Like You… and that is just what is “current”. She could have done Imagine instead of Joshua, Beautiful Day, Since U Been Gone…. the list is endless. The point is the judges gave her crap and she didn’t sing it well.

          • Sandi says:

Tarc, I don’t think you ready my post correctly.

What I was trying to say was that each and every song Jessica sings is met by the same criticism from some: “It’s inappropriate for a 16 year old to be singing that song.” And I don’t disagree that there’s some discomfort in watching a young girl sing about sex and relationships. But she can’t help that this is the content of the vast majority of popular songs so she can’t be expected to limit herself to songs that do not deal with these matters.

Yes, of course, most pop music is sung by and geared to younger people. But the fact that she is 16 rather than 20something makes some people uncomfortable with her singing those types of songs. I’m saying that if she’s on a show where she has to sing pop songs, she really has no choice than to sing about mature subjects and I’m sick and tired of hearing her criticized for it.

          • tarc says:

Sorry, Sandi, I didn’t read all of that correctly. My apologies. But i have to point out that she does seem to go way out of her way to pick songs that are way out of her emotional depth and her performances suffer for it. I really hold Nigel responsible – the minimum age for the show should be 18, and this year we saw Hollie, Skylar, and Jessica suffer for it.

        • Luke says:

No. She was flat in one and screeched on a second.

      • Terri says:

He actually missed notes in the first verse. That had to be the easiest song to sing of the night, if not the competition, and he couldn’t do it. Not that it matters. He’s going to the final. It’s a lock.

      • Ladyguard says:

Get your tv checked. The sound is definitely off. Philip was horrible on that last song

      • ladyguard says:

I think your tv needs tuning

      • Sun says:

They are all great. But I am concerned that the judges are manipulating America ! The song J lo chose for her…..so obvious , she wants Jessica out of the way. Why not give everyone a fair chance and let America decide. I am sick of all this manipulation.

        • Bobbi says:

The judges were aware Jessica was sick with a very sore throat. Even Melinda Doolittle was tweeting her with throat remedies two days ago. You can hear her raspy in the Fox interview during her homecoming. Jennifer Holliday was also giving her support due to how bad she felt.Yet they gave her one of the toughest breath control songs ever (by an icon no less) and then a very high pitched song that was sung well but as Michael a poor choice for Jessica. Does ajimmy even know what kind of record he can make with her because THAT was not it. I thought Phillip’s last song was really done well, it was just his incessant left hand rubbing his thigh that distracted me. It really took away from a very poignant moment because the hand was not even in beat just rub, rub rub… I never noticed that before. Joshua sang Etta well, but compare it to Jessica’s 14 year old version. Swaggernaut had more connection to it because she really adores Etta.

          • Bobbi says:

“but as Michael wrote” ( my ipad hates me)

          • Marsaili says:

that’s too bad that Jessica had a sore throat—and it’s too bad that the fans are blaming the judges for her not as great as usual performances. But Phillip has been enduring extreme horrific pain for months—and NONE of Jessica’s fan gave him a pass when he had an off performance. Please, singers sing with sore throats all the time, I doubt too many put off major surgery and still continue to perform well week after week while in extreme pain. Even Lauren sang well last year when she ruptured her vocal chords. A sore throat is not a pass for a bad performance.

          • Mary B says:

I feel exactly the same way. How many were willing to throw Phillip under the bus because he was sick. He did a damn good job tonight inspite of being in pain. How many of you noticed he was in pain tonight. It was clearly on his face. He is suppose to get a lot of rest but this week was crazy busy. They even recorded all their songs, if you remember last year they didn’t on homecoming week. I think Phillip is going to be very successful because he has true grit. He is a very special person. Don’t forget his name becausevyou will be hearing it again and again. He is no cookie cutter WGWG. He is the most original contestant idol has seen in years.

          • Jennifer says:

Looked like Phillip was feeling a little more than the music. He probably didn’t even realize he was doing it due to nerves.

          • HudsonRiverside says:

Just don’t look below his waist and you’ll be fine. Nothing to see here folks, move along. ;)

          • Jennifer says:

Nothing to see, except some unfortunate thumb grazes. That may be a first for this show.

          • Lee says:

@Marshall: There’s a BIG difference between singing a difficult Mariah Carey song with a sore throat and the easy songs (with a limited vocal range) that Phillip sings with kidney stones. Get real.

          • Marsaili says:

Marshall??? Wow, only ONE person has every called me Marshall on this board—why did you change your name? Getting hard to keep track of them all? Who says Phillip’s songs were easy? YOU? Yeah, he doesn’t sing Mariah—but that is no reason to dismiss the fact that he is in worse pain than Jessica can even imagine—just shows how mean and nasty some of you people are here. And it still doesn’t excuse jessica’s night of you can’t give Phillip a pass for his one bad night. Geez, it’s amazing how hateful some of you are! (chug)

          • tarc says:

@Lee – Yeah, Phillips material was better an sung better. Difficult is not better; and Jessica’s warbling style on it was a little off-putting. I have no idea why she constantly chose duplets on the verse; it weakened the impact and made it weak. Phillip did three great performances, which bested the other two, hands down.

          • Lunakit says:

Yes, the hand rubbing was a real distraction…

          • Holly says:

YES, the hand-rubbing! I couldn’t stop watching that, and I thought it betrayed Phillip’s nervousness at being forced to sing a romantic song with a melody. He could barely hit all the notes because his range is so limited, and I think he was embarrassed to sing something that made him emotionally vulnerable. Ugh! I don’t know why all the females in Idol-land find him so appealing. He’s really a case of artistic and emotional arrested development.

          • Codie Taft says:

to michael i will apologize when i said the other day ” all the songs u picked for Jessica were sucksss ” sorry…actually now, they are way more greater than Jlo and Jimmy’s choice of songs..sucked !!

          • Joe says:

Marsailli – Get over yourself. Sorry to disappoint you, but Lee is their own person. Your name looks like Marshall when you’re on an iPad because the type font is so small. I didn’t notice you had a different name until I was looking at this board on a 27” iMac and I’ve never called you Marshall again. But keep putting conspiracy theories out there. What you & tarc can’t accept is there are more than just one person who don’t agree with the two of you. It’s why you both post on every darn comment on this board forcing your opinions down people’s throats. Either that or someone needs to get out of the house and get some fresh air once in awhile. There’s vitamin D in sunlight. It’s good for you and helps mental illness.

          • Marsaili says:

And who doesn’t agree with me, Joe? I’ve said over and over again that I am happy with whomever wins. I have said I’m rooting for Joshua, I liked Jessica’s performances last night and I thought Phillip won the night—I haven’t seen anyone argue with me on any of that. The only thing that I’ve disagreed with people on is how nasty this message board is becoming—how Jessica fans crucified Phillip when he had an off night for being sick–yet they insist Jessica get a pass for having an off night. How people (like you) put down Phillip and his fans—come up with idiot reasons for people liking him (women just like him because he’s cute and they want to marry him) I mean, that is so insulting to women it isn’t even funny—THOSE are the kinds of things that I speak up about.
Comparing the singing of a 16 year old with talented diva leanings to a 21 year old guy who is bluesy, funky and rock and roll—-there are very few guys like that who sing with a range like a Jessica—get real. And basically, it’s the nasty people that come back at me for sticking up for the contestants or sticking up for other posters here. Calling someone mentally ill—-that’s EXACTLY the type of post that I respond to and cut down—because it’s nasty and it isn’t necessary. So you and the Jaxguy and the Layla with your extreme love for Jessica and extreme hate for anyone else and their fans—-you are going to hear from me when you put people down, when you dis the contestants with your fantasy reasons why they suck (in your opinion) or why people like them.

          • Mary B says:

Marsaili, I am a Phillip fan and you are a Joshua fan yet you are my favorite on this board. You have always been fair and your post always makes sense. There are alot of really nasty people on this board, disgustingly so and I wanted to not bother to read anymore but it is the people like you that keep me here. Thank you.

          • Marsaili says:

Thank you Mary, that is very sweet! ;-) to be fair—I AM a Joshua fan and I am rooting for him to win—but I am a bigger Philip fan over all—I do honestly believe that Joshua—by performances alone—deserves to win. But Philip is the one contestant (well, along with Elise) that I am guaranteed to purchase music from after this is all said and done!

          • Cris says:

Joe, love your stand against Marsailli and Tarc. They talk like the know it all and want others to just swallow them as the truths.

          • I’m glad I’m not the only one who was totally distracted and embarrassed by P2’s hand rubbing, god, it wouldn’t stop…

          • tarc says:

            @Chris – Yet you swallow Joe’s garbage thinking…

        • Fernando says:

Are you sure J. Lo picked Jessica’s song? It sounded like the judges discussed the choices with each other and decided together.

          • Pbt says:

Exactly! The song choices were decided and discussed by all 3 judges. They made that clear.

          • Cris says:

JLo said she picked the song. The other two concurred with the choice, most probably.

        • ivy says:

yeah. i kinda feel that they sabotaged jessica with the song choices :(

      • Leila says:

Jessica is the best vocalist technically, Phillip can’t even compare. Joshua is the real star, Phil is just the token cute unthreatening white guy who the rabid Idol fans usually get attached to.

    • Mary B says:

Says you. I loved Phillip and so did much of America. I think I’m in love.

    • Joe says:

It’s pointless to criticize him or get upset. He’s going to win. He has the votes. That standing O at the end of the last song was his coronation. You might as well skip the rest if you can’t handle watching him win based on good lucks, charm and poor vocal ability. They said it all tonight when they told him it doesn’t matter how well you sing it. That’s this show in a nutshell now. It’s Mystery Date.

      • Terri says:

        That there is gospel.

      • FreeHaley says:

        +1

      • Nedsdag says:

They should change the name of the show from American Idol to American Guitar Playing White Male Idol.

        • Jaxguy says:

They should rename the show “The show that keeps losing viewers.” If Phillip wins, I’m done. He was by far the worst of the night. Josh was good, but kinda screamed on the Mary J song, and I normally don’t accuse him of that. And Jessica got sabotaged by JLO and Jimmy I. And when Randy praised Phillip and they gave him a standing O I was disgusted. So they will lose at least another viewer after this year if Phillip wins.

          • Danny says:

Bye bye, then. Thanks for sharing!

          • Marsaili says:

is that a promise? Can we have it in writing and notarized?

          • Dubliner says:

I voted 50 times for the first time ever – all for Phil in your honor.

          • tarc says:

I voted 50 times for Phillip for Joe, 50 more for Jaxguy, and then 50 more for me. Maybe I’ll do 50 more for layla… I’ve got time.

          • Marsaili says:

            LOL, good for you!

          • Danny says:

            Do it, Tarc!!

          • Bobbi says:

What happened to this comments section? Are we talking about the show at all or just turning into a youtube talkback?

          • Stevey says:

Jaxguy happened to the comments section :) unfortunately…

          • tarc says:

And yes, I really did vote that many times. :)

          • Joe says:

tarc – Good for you. Shut in’s like you have to keep busy after all.

          • tarc says:

LOL! Lying as usual Joe? I voted 50 extra times just for your obnoxious comments.

          • Ray says:

Be prepared to leave. He will win. In reality Philip did OK today. Josh was good tonight. Jessica did not have it tonight. I think she will go home tomorrow.

          • me says:

ALL OF YOU JESSICA HATERS OUT THERE… JUST WAIT TOMORROW WHO WILL LEAVE.. AND I’M TELLING YOU ALL IT’S NOT JESSICA.. SHE WAS SICK BUT STILL SHE DELIVERED… “JESSICA AND JOSHUA FINALE”….HERE WE GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JAXGUY, THUMBS UP!

          • Joseph A says:

That’s sort of how I feel about Joshua who has been pimped by the producers for months. Joshua can sing well but the kid is so friggen plastic and in the words of Mia Michaels , when he performs I do not see his soul.

          • Joe says:

tarc – before the season ends please let us all know when your episode of Hoarders Buried Alive is airing, kay? We’re all pulling for you sweetie. Remember, you don’t need that Donnie Osmond doll collection and you can live a happy life without your Sean Cassidy hookrug. Chins up!

          • tarc says:

Joe, you kill me. This ‘shut-in’ was in three different states on Wednesday. But hey, your delusions are interesting… but I think you need to get back on your meds. Oh, and I voted fifty times for you for Phillip – just in case you forgot. Normally, I only vote ten times overall, but a couple of you inspired me to up my game twenty five times. Oh, and the People poll had Phil running 2 votes to one over both Jessica and Joshua as of 1PM EST. :D

        • MaciasClan says:

          Or American Out-of-tune-in-an-original-way Idol

        • Chrissie Kirk says:

Yeah…and I am so tired of that. Maybe next season they won’t even put anyone thru to the top 12 like that, just for a change.

      • Yo' says:

Well, yeah. What is odd is that it is obvious the judges seem to want him to win, despite an overload of white guitar-strumming winners. I will never understand what happened last night: Jessica got the worst songs (for her) of the season, and P2 got a standing ovation for a pretty mediocre rendition. P will be the best looking of the WGs to win, but they need to rename the show American Cutie. Hope he can write, because if he can’t, he will fade fast.

        • Holly says:

I have to disagree. David Cook was by far the best looking WG to win! The rest have been nothing more than poor imitations!

        • chistosa says:

Kris Allen is really nice looking.

        • Carly says:

I think you are quite right. I m guessing that PP is way ahead in the voting dept. He is going to win BECAUSE he is cute. The judges (and our friend Nigel) don’t want to look like fools for critiquing PP because they KNOW he is going to win.

Joshua, who has unbelievable talent, will be robbed.

        • tarc says:

I’ll agree that Jessica did get a raw deal with two really bad picks from the Idol staff, but the worst pick was her own. Beyond the bad Aerosmith, there just isn’t anything anyone can do to make I’ll Be There a song that anyone wants to hear (or can stay awake through).

      • Leila says:

So many undeserving winners on this show: Taylor Hicks, Kris Allen, Lee Dewyze, Scott McCreery… I never expect the best singer to win anyway.

        • Ian says:

Out of those 4, at least McCreery’s sold a ton of records, so I can’t hold his win against him.

          • tarc says:

Hicks and DeWyze are great at what they do; they just got railroaded into making a pop album for 19 for their first release. Since they aren’t pop singers, it was no wonder they weren’t well received. Both are doing their own music again, and they are doing well and making great music. I pretty much loathe the music Scotty sings and I find his performances incredibly boring (at 17 years old), but you have to give it to the kid – he’s got an amazing voice. Hopefully, he do something interesting with it. Like Jessica, he’ll be around, and proabbly vastly better in their third decade of life.

        • siouxl says:

Scotty Mccreery only has 2 songs that went gold and a platinum record…He is touring with Brad Paisley and actually sells out venues on his own…What more does he need to do to be a viable entertainer in your eyes? If you don’t like the country music genre, don’t speak of it’s artist as if you know what you are talking about. If you have no issues with the genre then you still don’t know what you are talking about..

      • Meghan says:

Joe, you are so right. Wish it wasn’t so, but your post describes the inevitable.

    • FreeHaley says:

Yeah I mean he gets performance of the night and OMG!! because he actually stuck to the melody and carried it for once? Barely. And a basic melody? GWG and that is the standard two seasons running now.
Not that I dislike him but.

      • elisefan44 says:

totally agree – i was astonished to hear the judges lavish him with praise after that last performance, which i personally thought was a hot mess. yeah, he didn’t try to *change* the melody, but i cringed at the way he ‘sang’ it! his vocal limitations – especially in comparison to the other two remaining contestants – were so very evident during that performance. hated it.

    • Njloonie says:

PhiPhi’s last song was such a snooooooooze. How dare the judges give him a standing ovation.

    • Jaxguy says:

      Agree

    • Dubliner says:

OK, I’d believe that because you’re consistent. Joshua has the best song of the night, but Phillip had the best series.

      • Lana says:

Joshua has been having the best series, he has out performed everyone for weeks now and tonight was no different. I love Phillip and Jessica too so I won’t be too upset about who wins, however Joshua is the only one whose album I will buy.

        • Chrissie Kirk says:

Thank you, thank you Lana. Joshua will go far even if he doesn’t take the Idol crown but I’d like him to be the one the confetti is for…and I have to laugh about all the “but he’s gospel” comments…where the heck did Aretha Franklin get her start? Go Joshua…go right to the top!

        • Dubliner says:

I’ll not argue that Joshua has been the most consistently good, but I’m not likely to buy a Joshua Ledet album either. I don’t see America doing a lot of that either (though he’ll probably have a career in music).

    • Jessica’s going home. I’d love for there to be a shocker, and for her to stay, but the love the judges had for those 2 boys tonight and the fact that Phillip has never been near Bottom 3 or 2 and that Joshua is the judge’s pet, the writing just seems on the wall that it will be a 2 man finale. The first since Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.

    • Sun says:

We wont be fooled judges !

They are all great. But I am concerned that the judges are manipulating America ! The song J lo chose for her…..so obvious , she wants Jessica out of the way. Why not give everyone a fair chance and let America decide. I am sick of all this manipulation.

    • Sun says:

We wont be fooled judges….we have brains
They are all great. But I am concerned that the judges are manipulating America ! The song J lo chose for her…..so obvious , she wants Jessica out of the way. Why not give everyone a fair chance and let America decide. I am sick of all this manipulation

    • SanDiegoCat says:

Actually the limited range and slightly off-key singing ARE subjective interpretations. Listen to the original Bob Seger version of the song. He has a similar vocal and slightly off-key style and has had many hits. Listen to anything by Grammy winning artists Green Day. Listen to anything by The Killers or Taylor Swift. All singers who sing in the STYLE that is slightly off-key. Stephen Tyler said last year that many of his favorite singers sing that way. You may not like it, but it’s a legitimate style.

    • Blank Slate says:

I’m a fan of Phillip so I ask this in all sincerity: what was bothering him while singing “We’ve Got Tonight”? Why was he rubbing his left thigh throughout the song? A nervous habit or something worse? When Ryan came out for the post-song interview, he brought two chairs with him. They KNEW Phillip needed to sit, not stand. What’s the story here? I feel bad for him. He seems sick too often for someone so young– and so beautiful to look at. :)

      • Mary B says:

He needs an operation and is waiting to finish the show plus he has been dealing with kidney stones for the last couple of months and is in constant pain. He was exhausted from the weeks activities and to me he looked like he was fighting the pain tonight. I could see it in his eyes. I am a mother of three sons, grown men now, and I could just see it. This must be real important to him to stick it out like he is. I give him lots of credit he is a tough guy.He

        • Blank Slate says:

I didn’t know this, Mary B. Thank you so much for filling me in on the background. Cannot imagine having to go on stage with a headache, let alone kidney stones. Poor kid. I hope he has a long and healthy life ahead of him… as well as a long and successful career.

        • ivy says:

jessica was fighting sore throat as well.

        • Leila says:

Stop, please stop with the kidney stone excuse for everything he does! He seemed pretty healthy and well on stage and on his homecoming party.

        • zaza says:

Mary B, I’m a mom, too, and I thought the same thing. I looked at him and said…that kid is NOT feeling well. I hope the operation helps him.

          • Cris says:

When he sings, he seems to be in pain. That’s his style. If he really was bothered by the kidney stones, I doubt he could even perform.

          • Marsaili says:

He IS bothered by kidney stones, multiple stones—he has kidney disease, his kidney’s keep producing stones, even after they get rid of them. He’s got a shunt in place as well. He’s been singing in pain most of the season.

    • sfbsailor says:

In general, I thought song choices tonight were poor and performances overall were nowhere near the best of the season. At least, by watching the show online with web streaming, I didn’t have to listen to the judges’ comments that are so damnably lame. I think the contestants were all tired and showed in their performances. Joshua singing “Imagine” just seemed totally weird to me: A church boy singing “Imagine there’s no heaven” [blasphemy] .. “no hell” [blasphemy]. The song is an anthem to rational humanistic secularism.

Song choices for Jessica and wardrobe choices were sabotage! I hope voters will overcome that and put her and Joshua in the finale. I don’t even listen to Philip past a few bars, except on the last number which I found reasonably listenable.

AND HEY, MICHAEL, HOW ABOUT A SHOUT OUT ON YOUR VIDEO TO CALL THE RADIO STATIONS FOR HALEY! She was the star of top 3 last year. I can’t even remember what the two country bumpkins sang on top 3 night.

    • Reen says:

JUst watching the show on oz tv – OMG if Pp wins it will be the WORST result I have ever seen on Idol – he is a lovely guy but he is HOPELESS – the other two are good (IMO not the greatest ever on idol – better than Kelli, Carrie, Adam, Melinda, and many others ??????) but if he wins then the WGWG syndrome could be the death of Idol.

    • My own opinion says:

The last few years, I feel the Top 3 show is for the judges to throw one under the bus no matter how well they sing so that their top 2 choices make the finale. It was obvious that the judges gave Jessica a song that was the most difficult to master as well as inappropriate. Watching her hit those notes was awesome but listening to a 16 year old say she wants to feel your body once again next to her, ummmm…. Then Jimmy gives her the complete opposite….a song a child under 10 sang without showcasing her talents. The show reminded me of last year when Haley got ran over by the same bus. Both girls sang their butts off but the judges wanted their intentions for the finale known to America. Hats off to Steven for giving Jessica at least a little to hang onto when he said he could see her winning. But….the 3 judges only gave the standing O together for Joshua and Phillip. Just seemed a little rehearsed and instructed to me. I hate being told who I should vote for.

    • Bob L. says:

Couldn’t agree with you more, Punk. I thought this was completely the wrong song and the wrong style for Phillip. I haven’t liked Phil much all year, but I actually thought he was very good on the second song–which, not coincidentally, was his choice. That is what he does well. It’s not my favorite thing to listen to, but I think he could have a nice career doing that kind of music. He sounded awkward and tentative on “We’ve Got Tonight.” Awful choice from Iovine.

  2. Callum says:

    Phillip brought the house down!!

    • brandon69 says:

With the exception of a few trolls (perhaps on nigel’s payroll) we all know phillip is and has been for a while the most marginally talented performer this season. We were all able to see from the images of his homecoming, that his “fan base” is not exactly motivated by his singing ability.

      • Tiff says:

That’s exactly what I thought, brandon69 – it’s obvious that his fanbase is mostly female, and definitely not voting for singing ability. That said, I thought he did a good job on the final song. The rest were the usual P2 crap. Mary B’s comment above says it all – he makes them fall in love, and they forget about actual singing ability.

Jessica was sick and I could tell. She also had the hardest song tonight with My All – No More Drama was a close second, but Josh killed it and unfortunately, Jess didn’t. Her “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” was pretty great, though.

        • Fernando says:

Yes, because it’s women who can’t control their lust, unlike men. Women are just always falling in love and becoming out-of-control stupid. And they believe that if they vote for Phillip, he will marry them. All of them. Even the old ones. Why, right now, outside my house, there are cars skidding all over the street. Apparently a pp-watching party just broke up and it’s like all these women are so drunk and blind and besotted with his hotness that they are driving into trees! This is tragic. If only women could be banned from voting, not just on Idol, but for anything.

          • Mary B says:

You are all so ridiculous it makes me sick. when I made that comment I was not meaning it literally. I just enjoyed his performances tonight. I am not a young girl and am not in the least attracted to his looks. I love his music and I admire him for sticking it out when others would have caved. I’ve purchased every album since the top 13 his music is the only thing I can listen to over and over with Holly my second favorite. Joshua is very talented but I can’t handle how he over sings everything. Most of his songs sound exactly the same at the end. I like some of Jessica’s songs but some just does not suit my taste. Her voice can get a harsh tone to it. when I said I think I’m in love did not mean I was swooning over this kid. So let me be clear I am not in love with Phillip but I am in love with his music. If anyone is gross around here it is people that make something out of nothing. There is so much hate on this board it is sickening. These are kids for godssake and every one of them are talented in their own right but it is different strokes for different folks. The world will not come to an end if your favorite does not win and they will all do fine in the end. So lighten up people.

          • Lana says:

            Fernando, are you a Republican?

          • Marsaili says:

Heck, I’d go so far to ask if he’s a Tea Partier with what he posted! One thing is for sure, though, he’s definitely a troll.

          • Fernando says:

Mary B, did you not get that by ridiculing the inane attitudes on here about women and their Idol votes, I was actually taking your side? I didn’t think I was all that subtle.

          • Mary B says:

No, there were other post saying that what I said was gross and so on. I just cannot believe how people act on these boards especially to the contestants. These kids are working their butts off trying to acomplish something and the hate that comes out of peoples mouth is so upsetting. If you are not in love with someones music fine but the attacks on the contestants and those who like them is actually scary. I give all these kids lots of credit and they really deserve a little respect. Not many of us can do what they are doing. Putting their heart and soul out there with the chance of total rejection.

          • Fernando says:

Republican? Good Lord. NO ONE on this chat is familiar with sarcasm?

          • MA says:

            I got it, Fernando. Ha!

          • Mel says:

This is hilarious! All, I’m pretty sure Fernando is KIDDING. And making a point about how silly (and patronizing) it is to theorize that girls and women vote only on looks. If he’s not kidding, then yeah, it’s pretty scary. But come on. He IS kidding!

          • Mary B says:

Yes, he was kidding but I was so upset about what a few people said about my statement about falling in love with Phillip that when I saw his post I just figured he was jumping on the band wagon. People on this board say some pretty nasty things so not knowing fernando it was hard to tell but I am happy he cleared it up.

          • musicfan123 says:

Fernando, you made me laugh so hard I am crying. I am a Phillip fan and a woman and old and I believe he will marry me. Just kidding…This did make me laugh. I think if Phillip is in the Finale I will call a few of my gal-friends and have a pp-watching party. I live in a cul-de-sac we will do some majory donuts after he wins!!!

      • tarc says:

LOL! I’d love to be on Nigel’s payroll, but I’d rather work for SYTYCD. Phillip’s shown over and over that he’s doing the most pop chart friendly music, and that’s he talented enough to get accolades from pros and voters alike. I’m not sure how that equates to ‘marginally talented’, but I think you mistake opinion for fact.

      • DantheMan says:

Didn’t you notice Jessica and Joshua’s fan bases were also mostly teenaged girls? That’s because they all went to high schools for their homecomings and because teenaged girls come out to those sorts of things more than guys. I guarantee you that most guys watching are supporting Phillip.

        • tarc says:

I’d agree that Phillip picks up a lot of the guy vote, but a lot of diverse demos seem to be voting for him.

        • Fernando says:

DTM, I suspect you are right.

        • chistosa says:

From what I read on other sites I would agree that many males who vote are voting for Phillip. Many males have indicated that they have no interest in hearing Jessica sing, that her style is not their preference. I don’t know how that all translates to votes but I am a female in the targeted demographic (18-49) and I don’t relate to Jessica at all. While Joshua is my favorite, I don’t mind Phillip. But I cannot connect to Jessica and I have tried because I admire her vocal prowess, just not into her performances.

          • CAM says:

Exactly! I like all 3 for different reasons, but Jessica falls to the bottom of the three. I think her vocal ability is the best and her range is incredible, but there’s something missing. There’s a sort of disconnect that I can’t seem to ignore despite the fact that her vocal ability exceeds her competition. Branding Phillip as the WGWG and saying only girls with crushes are voting for him is stupid – and off base. When you hear the studio versions of all the songs over the season, there’s a great deal of improvement all around. I don’t get the hate aimed at any contestant. They all have talent, it’s just we can all relate to different types of music and different sounds. (I still miss Skylar.)

        • Jen says:

I have to disagree with this. My husband and the three other guy friends we know who watch the show are all LOVE Joshua. And we all agree Phillip is rather blah. Though he’s liked a lot more by everyone then Jessica is. She’s just so boring it hurts.

But Joshua deserves to win by a hundred miles. Phillip is just too crappy of a singer for my tastes.

      • Leila says:

That crowd must have been bored to death with his performance, you could tell.

    • Nedsdag says:

      Philip’s an arsonist? ;-)

  3. chelle says:

Thanks to Dish Network I missed the entire show. I am so irritated.

  4. KHS says:

I was super impressed by Phillips first performance! Why didn’t you like it, Slezak? Started acapella then got groovy. I also thought he sounded great. Josh and Phillip did awesome tonight. Poor Jessica–I was definitely a little disappointed by all 3 performances. I was hoping she would have a really great moment. I blame it on the song choices

    • Brigette says:

Agree with everything you said. Phillip’s first song was IT for me and Joshua was great. REALLY want Jessica in the finale but just don’t think it is going to happen. The boys outsang her. :/

      • Robin says:

I’m still singing Beggin’! That was awesome. I love Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 and “Disease” was a nice fit for Phillip. We’ve got tonight was a tender side of Phil we have not seen…he performed it well. He was best of the night for me! Josh on No Drama was his best and I really, really liked I’ll be there for Jessica.

  5. jake says:

I really hope history is made with Jessica Sanchez making it to the finals.

    • Owen says:

History being made? I’m not sure what you mean? A girl being in the final? There have been a number of girls in the final. A person of color in the final? That hasn’t happened in a long time but its guaranteed this year whether its Jess or not. Would she be the first 16 year old in the finale? That I’m not sure of.

    • JC says:

Jessica will do great if its God’s will she will make it. Idol will forever be a man’s, man’s, man’s world but it would be nothing without a woman :)

    • Jaxguy says:

Tonight should not keep Jessica out of the finals. She has been just as consistent and just as great, if not greater than Josh all season. I too blame the songs they dumped on her. And she did seem under the weather. Why not give her a show stopper this late in the game. It didn’t seem fair too me.

      • Dubliner says:

She’s been singing like a 3rd place finisher for three weeks now. It will be an all guy’s final.

        • Carlo says:

I agree. Jessica has done nothing to prove she should be in the finale. Tonight was her worst yet. Hope they kept that helicopter running so they can take her back home tomorrow.

        • Davey says:

Dubliner, Jessica probably got the most votes last week because of her song from Dreamgirls. She has hardly been a third place finisher. And quite frankly I think everyone was pretty boring tonight.

          • Dubliner says:

I can’t agree with you. Jessica’s I’m Telling You didn’t come anywhere near any recording of the song I’ve ever heard. I showed off her youth and immaturity, not her strengths and power.

          • HudsonRiverside says:

Original Dreamgirl commented Jessica was flawless on her cover. Original singer from Aerosmith stood up for Jessica tonight. So I’ll go by them. Hey, Taylor Hicks backed Phillip tonight on twitter, hoping Maroon Five will chime in. My two going to the finale! :)

          • tarc says:

And I love Jennifer Holliday for it, but she was being kind. (Unlike Gotye a few weeks back, Holliday is a pro.)

          • HudsonRiverside says:

Tarc, Jennifer Holliday’s numerous twitter praise for Jessica was borderline ecstatic … “Kind” would not be how anyone would describe them.

          • DantheMan says:

Dubliner, you can’t compare Jessica’s live performance to recordings. Recordings are always tweaked. Find some live versions to compare.

          • Dubliner says:

I’m not comparing live to studio. Jessica’s version did not compare in any way. It was just… nice. Pretty. Empty.

          • ivy says:

if you dont like her i guess you never will no matter how good she performed. and she was very good

          • Dubliner says:

I like Jessica just fine, and I expect she’ll be successful. The world isn’t black and white. Her version of I’m Telling You wasn’t great – she just does not have the life experience to sing that song. Her Etta James song was as equally hollow.

  6. Musicfan123 says:

Phillip and Joshua for the Finale, the best artist, performers and singers! WGWG!!! YESS!

    • Jaxguy says:

The most bland artist that has EVER been on this show. Jessica outclasses him by a million miles. He’s not even a decent singer.

      • Carlo says:

Funny, because many believe Jessica was the most bland tonight. She played it totally safe and yet was off key in every song and that is going to cost her.

        • afghan says:

I am a Skylar fan then a Joshua fan. But, I voted for Jessica tonight. Remember the first and last song were chosen by the judges and Jimmy. So, they set her up for failure. That’s not fair. They knew Philip is getting the most vote. So the choice was between Joshua and Jessica. They picked Joshua. That’s sad. Let America choose! Don’t fool us, it’s not going to work. Last week, Am I telling you I am not going was amazing. I hated Jessica all season. I felt she lacks personality. But the potential I saw after this performance. Make me a fan. I really hope she gets those sympathy votes tonight. She got mine for sure.

          • The first and last song were chosen by others but she chose “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” I’m not here to bash Jessica, but I think she’s made much better song choices in the past (I don’t buy the whole “too mature” thing) and at this point in the competition, that was the wrong song.

        • Owen says:

Okay, yes, she was probably the blandest tonight, but quit lying. She was off key in ONE song. the other two may have been boring but they were on key, and you know, she usually is always right on the money on key, every week. she has one bad night, she’s sick and you use that against her when Phillip has been off week after week. You can have your opinions, there’s no arguing that, but you can’t just lie. Facts are facts.

          • Marsaili says:

No, Phillip had ONE off night. Because he was sick. And not with a sore throat—with kidney stones. Singers sing all the time with sore throats. Lauren Alaina sang with ruptured vocal chords for gosh sake! Jessica gets a pass for a sore throat–Phillip gets blasted and he’s REALLY sick. That is just hypocritical.

          • Suggestor says:

Wait, when do people sing out of their kidneys? Because if Phillip had a very sore throat it would also close up his SINGING voice. Sound only comes out thru the vocal cords. Singing through pain like he had is commendable, but saying that a sore throat does not equate in a SINGING competition is just silly. That”s like saying if you broke his fingers his guitar playing would not be affected because he was able to perform with kidney stones. C’mon now. :)

          • Marsaili says:

LOL, so you don’t know how to sing then—well I do—let me tell you—singing requires the use of your DIAPHRAGM. To use your diaphragm properly, you need to move your ABDOMEN. If you are having severe pain in your abdomen, like, from a kidney stone, it is going to HURT and it will take much more effort to breathe and expand your diaphragm. It is WAY more painful than a sore throat—which can get some relief from remedies and medicine–there is no relief for kidney stones until they come out of your body. Understand now?

          • Marsaili says:

wow, that came out way more harsh than I intended, sorry about that! ;-)

          • Suggestor says:

Apology accepted. However, I also know your VOCAL chords is how all that diaphragm air gets heard. The diaphragm controls the amount of air, but if the vocal chords are shot you cannot be heard correctly. You can take all the air you want but if your throat is raspy it will SOUND pitchy. Case in point, Adele who has tremendous diaphragm control had to rest and get her vocal chords healed before she could sing again. Plus, the premise was on pitch and the vocal chords are crucial to that. Also, I know many Jessica fans here who gave Phillip props for singing sick. This comment section will be much more civil if we do not lump everyone into absolutes.

          • Marsaili says:

The weird thing is, I don’t think jessica sounded bad tonight—I liked the first song—I didn’t care for the second song (she should have never picked that song!!!) and I loved her third song—-I don’t know what the big deal is. But, for having a sore throat, her iTunes recordings are beautiful—she managed to hide the pain there!

        • HudsonRiverside says:

Amazing how someone can spin that Jessica played it safe. She didn’t choose the songs, and when is singing Mariah and Michael Jackson ever playing it safe? The song she chose was a tough one in front of Steven himself.

          • HudsonRiverside says:

Being a Phillip and Jessica fan, I’m so screwed on this talkback.

          • Joe Strummer says:

            A) Steven didn’t write the song she sang so it’s not a big deal to sing it in front of him.

            B) Singing Mariah and Michael Jackson is predictable and boring. She’s probably been singing these songs since she was 4 years old. It would have been more fun to see her stretch a little and do something unexpected. She does get a pass, though, because she did NOT choose those songs.

        • ivy says:

          she got sore throat.

      • Dubliner says:

Are you going to post Phillip hate all over tonight’s board, just like you have for weeks?

      • FreeHaley says:

He is a lot less bland than Scotty was.

      • chistosa says:

Jessica has been the weakest performer these past two weeks. And to say she “outclasses” him? Ridiculous. Phillip is not my choice for the win (neither is Jessica) but he has been nothing but tasteful throughout this process. As viewers we can and should vote for our preferred contestant and post about what we like. But foolish hyperbole without data to back it up is needed.

        • chistosa says:

oops! Meant to say that foolish hyperbole without data to back it up is not needed.

        • Dubliner says:

Jessica has been the weakest the last two weeks, and it was all the fault of song selection, not talent. She got really screwed this week – with the judges’ pick, with Jimmy’s pick, and with her own pick.

  7. No Hollie = Boring performance show

  8. Musicfan123 says:

Jessica should not have been the last girl standing, IMHO.

    • Tara says:

Uh. She was. Other two were dudes. ;)

    • Kira says:

I agree with you. I thought Jessica was one of the worst females in the Top 10. Better than only Shannon and that’s it.

      • Jaxguy says:

If you truly feel that way you either have no taste or don’t know what a brilliant voice really is. You are the reason that the charts are filled with total garbage and the radio not worth turning on. Not one singer on the show this year has a voice as incredible as hers. And that is not an opinion. You don’t have to like her style but to say she had the worst voice is pure stupidity.

        • Carlo says:

Jessica would make an OK cruise ship singer but she is not gonna be a star. Her vocal tone is about as generic as they come and all she does is mimic others. Zero originality to ANYTHING she does. She is the epitome of karaoke.

          • Will says:

Yes, because Don’t Want To Miss a thing sounded JUST like the original. Zero originality. She clearly sounded exactly like Steven. And even if that WAS the case, which is isn’t, given that her “mimic” voice through this competition has included songs by Beyonce, Mariah, Whitney, and Jennifer Hudson, I’d say that she’s well beyond the talent of any karaoke or cruise ship artist.

          • Suggestor says:

Carlo is saying that because it is a known fact that many Filipinos work on cruise ships as entertainers. It’s a very condescending and somewhat racist dig that anonymous people write when they try to impress others with their ignorance. It’s not the first time Jessica has probably heard that and sadly, won’t be the last. I just picture her smiling face when she said she hates being compared to a lounge singer. That lil girl has to go thru life being twice as strong than people like Carlo. When she shrugs it off it just makes my heart sink because I know it hurts. Here’s an idea why not let Carlo say that in front of Jessica’s dad? I wonder how brave he’d be then?

          • Marsaili says:

LOL, her dad seems like a really nice, sweet guy, but he’s got some guns in those arms of his! I wouldn’t dare to say anything insulting about her around him (not that I would anyway, and plus I’m a woman so I doubt he would come after me anyway—but just in case!) Her whole family seems very sweet and when she said she was going to win for her little brothers, it melted my heart!

          • Tommyo2000 says:

Umm .. When they give her an original song and she puts it out as a single, it will be her “original”. Then when another girl trys to sing it they will say “she is a bot she sang it just like jessica” … This arguement people put foward is kind of stupid ….

        • Ray says:

Obviously, it is your opinion. I have not liked her voice all season. Elise and Skylar are better performers than her. She had her worst night to date.

        • claire says:

Why don’t you accept the fact that people have different opinions to you? I think Jessica can sing, and can sing rings around Phillip, but I prefer Phillip. Not because I’m in love with his looks-Colton Dixon stole my heart long ago, but because I appreciate what he does with music. Sure, he had a dodgy night, and sometimes, he is a little samey-same in that he plays guitar and stands in one place, but heck, I like it.

Jessica and Joshua are great power vocalists, but that is not everyone’s cup of tea. I listen to a lot of music on my ipod through my earphones, and I can’t imagine listening to him screeching through them. I can imagine listening to Phillip, and Colton, for that matter. Jessica comes across as very fake to me…like when she said that Skylar should still be there, did anyone actually believe she meant it? I didn’t. It looked scripted.

People go on and on about song choice-and someone mentioned that the charts/current music is full of sexual/mature content but if JLO so very badly wanted Jessica to tackle a Mariah song, there’s so many songs in her songbook that are tender and not at all sexual/mature. That is just looking at Mariah alone. Adele, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, Beyonce, Christina even, have a body of work that include pieces that would have allowed her to be age-appropriate, and tender at the same time.

We’ve been fed for basically all of the season that Jessica is the best singer out there, and she proved that’s she’s far from it by taking on Mariah Carey. My All should be sung with passion, desperation even (I’d give my all to have just one more night with you, I’d risk my life…) doesn’t get more desperate than that. Her performance of it did not reflect that at all. I’m a massive fan of power vocalists, and have worshipped Mariah since I was a little girl, and so it’s hard for to not compare. I compared when Shannon did One Sweet Day, and butchered it. Mariah brings something Jessica isn’t old enough to know about to the table, experience and maturity. And, we’ve been fed that it’s not about the song, but about the singer. If she’s so good, she should have been able to tackle this song surely? -_-

I loved Phillip on Wed, Beggin’ was the performance of the night for me. It got everyone off their feet, dancing, and he suited that song to a tee. I sincerely hope he wins, though I do sometimes like Jessica’s performances. I loved Steal Away, and Dance With My Father. She does have “it” but so does Phillip.

I’m not here to bash one fanbase or another, my favourite went out the week after the save was used, and so I have no horse in this race. I prefer Phillip, and sincerely believe he will win (did you all know that a lot of Colton’s fanbase just decided to vote for Phillip as he is Colton’s friend?) which means he not only has his own fanbase, but the fanbase of an eliminated contestant.

I do wish people would stop excusing Jessica’s bad night on a sore throat, but throwing Phillip under a bus for a bad night a couple of weeks ago. His health issues supercede hers, and I think he’s holding up great considering. It shows how much he wants this. So please, don’t be a hypocrite in your comments, folks.

Also, I don’t think we’ve seen the real Jessica on the stage yet. Who is she? What kind of music is she wanting to release? Right now, all I see is a girl with a good voice copying others, and not being herself. It’ll come in time, but we don’t have time. We want to know what we’re voting for, and what kind of record will come out of the votes. Phillip has that edge, we already know who he is, and what kind of music he will be doing.
I’m annoyed that people in the Phillipines can vote, because we all know she’s only getting their vote because she’s half filipino.

Also, I’m really sick of being told that Joshua and Jessica are the best singers ever. Hm, really? I think all three judges could go sit in a darkened room, stick on some Mariah, Etta, Aretha, Boyz 2 Men, Whitney, Xtina, and a lot of the other greats, re-evaluate their statements and then come back to us. Those two don’t touch the greats. Sorry.

      • Cris says:

Kira, don’t agree with you. I think Jessica is the best female singer in this season11. Better than all the others. And that’s it.

    • Cris says:

The fact is Jessica is the last girl standing. Nothing wrong with you dreaming.

  9. chris thomas says:

Phillip is the only one I listened to. Fast-forwarded everything else, even the “judge’s” comments.

    • Miscellaneopolan says:

I can understand watching the show like that… as long as you didn’t vote… did you?
      .
I thought that Phillip was decent, Jessica was off, and Joshua was pretty good, probably the best of the night. Unfortunately, I don’t think any of them topped their respective moments from last week. Maybe that was hoping for too much. Based on tonight’s performances, Joshua and Phillip deserve to be in the finale, but Jessica may still sneak in there based on her large fan-base.

      • Terri says:

I don’t see why it matters if he voted or not. If a person knows who they like, what difference does it make what the others sing or what the judges say? Listen to what you enjoy and vote if you want to.

        • Miscellaneopolan says:

It doesn’t, really. People vote for who they want. I just like to entertain the idea that people will actually sample what the other side has to offer before blindly voting a straight ticket.

      • TheBeach says:

Agreed. Tonight was a bit of a let-down after last week.

  10. Owen says:

All boy final. And even though Jessica is my fave, I really can’t argue with it. I heartily disagree with Slezak’s opinion of P2’s final song (a standing O, Randy? Really? Really?) I still think he is a fine and different and worthy young song stylist. And Josh is phenomenal.

    • deedee says:

You make me feel a bit better. I’m thinking Joshua is a goner. Jessica was really dull, but safe. America likes that better than Josh’s OTTness. I love him but he didn’t have a great night. I dunno. I’m bummed. Preparing to say goodbye to the last of my faves. :(

  11. i loved what you wrote for Joshua Ledet: Mary J. Blige’s “No! More! DRAMA!”. ahahaha thats why i love your reviews, they’re funny but you know what your saying and get to the point

  12. TinyTim says:

Jessica was the best modern singer tonight and is the only one with a shot at a long-term career as a solo artist so please vote for her! Philips is cute like Kris Allen but all of the other earlier Idol cutie pies have stopped selling and Joshua is a great singer but sounds too old, ala Taylor Hicks. Let’s have a winner that will keep selling for years, not just one or two albums. Vote for Jessica, thanks.

    • Sha says:

I thought Joshua was actually pretty modern with the MaryJ track. He’s also done well with the other current songs he’s covered (Jar of Hearts and Runaway Baby). I wouldn’t dismiss him as solely old-fashioned.

      • deedee says:

Agreed. He wasn’t great overall tonight, but with the MJBlige tune, he showed that he could keep up with the best of today’s artists. He sounded completely current to me. Especially the way he ended the song — sort of “abandoned” it rather than putting a button on it. Very modern.

      • TinyTim says:

How many seasons of this show does it take to see this? Philips types have been on the show many times before and all have stopped selling. Philips is no better, good for one or two albums at most.

Joshua won’t sell either, all of the people that showed up to welcome him home were the elderly. lol.

    • chistosa says:

Totally disagree. Jessica was so off her game tonight. Poor songs and no moments. Add to that her pitchiness. Based on tonight, she should be the one not making it to the finale but I doubt that is going to happen.

      • Jaxguy says:

if you base who should go on one less that stellar night than Phillip should have been gone 12, 11, 10,9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 weeks ago. No one has been voted off for one bad night so Jessica should not go. And she wasn’t really bad just a little off for her standard.

        • tarc says:

ROFL! Seriously? It just goes to show that your opinion doesn’t seem to reflect the general public. I seem to recall a judge’s save being used…. those were some ‘stellar’ performances indeed.

          • Will says:

That’s exactly his point, tarc. If people should go home based on one or more less-than-stellar nights, then Phillip would be gone, but he isn’t, because people don’t go home based on that. That’s the entire point. Phillip isn’t gone, proving that staying power is not based on nightly performances. Otherwise, he would be.

          • tarc says:

And you miss my point – the voters don’t agree that he had many bad performances. Personally, he had one bad song (and just the high parts of the chorus) in the last six weeks. It’s not likely to be anything else – Americans have an incredibly short attention span. He’s gotten the job done every week for ten weeks now.

          • Lee says:

@tarc: You actually liked Phillip’s rendition of the Zombies’ song? If you did then I think you need to get your ears cleaned.

          • tarc says:

@Lee – I’ve never said that. In fact, I’ve said that was his one bum live song in weeks multiple times. And the studio version sounds great.

  13. Pbt says:

Michael, a difference from previous years – the songs were not selected by the individual judges for an individual singer.

They were clearly announced individually by the judges, but they kept saying “when WE were choosing” these songs, WE wanted this and WE wanted that.

The selections were a collaboration between the judges.

  14. JC says:

Jessica is under the weather. I loved her last 2 performances better J.lo kind of screwed her up vote for her blujays she is in danger :(

    • chistosa says:

She should be in danger. She was the worst one tonight. That is how it should work.

      • Jaxguy says:

Phillip was BY FAR the worst. No comparison. Horrible singer. Can’t stand watching him butcher every song he does.

        • Dubliner says:

I’d invite you not to watch then. P2 had the best set of three songs.

        • Scooter says:

You’re entitled to your opinion, but to call him a horrible singer, that’s a little ridiculous.. whatever floats your boat, though.

      • Li-Li says:

Agreed. I went in thinking she just is the best, most marketable vocalist, but her performances were just not that interesting. She’s probably too young to come up with her own hip arrangement (a la Volcano), but did they have to give her that super-cheesy arrangement of “I’ll Be There”? Not a horrible song choice or performance, just a totally boring arrangement.

  15. Sandi says:

It kills me to say it but I think Jessica is done. They treat Josh as though he’s the second coming and obviously Phil Phil is going all the way. Jessica will be left in the cold. I honestly think she was sabotaged by the song choices. The last thing she needed was a Mariah number and, as Slezak said, I’ll be There was never going to give her a big moment. I happened to think IDWMAT was great but it was right in the middle and not enough to compete with Phil’s fan base and Josh’s pimping.
    .
BTW, it may just be me, but I wasn’t feeling Phil’s last number and was shocked at the standing O. It seemed very forgettable to me. Nothing special at all.

    • Marsaili says:

I think her worst song was IDWMAT and that was her pick—I don’t understand it! WHY? She pretty much sank herself with that song–it was ok, but past Idols have done it better. I really, really liked Phillip’s last song—I have loved that song for 30+ years and I thought he really brought the passion that it needs. I am worried about Josh, I had him pegged to win, nothing really grabbed me tonight. For me, Phillip won the night.

      • deedee says:

Worried about Josh, too. :( *crying*

      • chistosa says:

I agree. Why did she choose it? Terrible choice for her.

        • Suggestor says:

She chose it because she’d have to float in the air and shoot laser beams from her fingertips to get one judge to stand up for her. I really liked her on this but I see why she chose it. I don’t see how Jimmy’s song choice for her was even relevant to the competition at this time. Was it to hear her sing high notes? If he thinks this is what Jessica should sing then best to get as far away from interscope as possible. Why not Lauryn Hill, or even choose Michael’s “Ben” if he was going to be all age appropriate. At least it would give her a bigger moment.

          • Dubliner says:

I agree with you for a change. Jessica got screwed by the judges and by Jimmy (and then by her own pick). I could easily pick three song she could *murder* by being great songs that fit her voice and are emotionally appropriate. I’m really not liking how they are steering her.

    • mcfudge says:

Totally agree. I thought his first round was much better. The last round he seemed uncomfortable and disconnected.

    • eyeronic says:

Sandy, I feel like you tapped into my brain, wrote out what you saw there and posted it here. As a staunch, season-long member of Team Jessica, I’m sad to see my girl’s prospects dim so quickly. She was never bad, but she certainly wasn’t great. In my view she accomplished something with her performance of Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing, since she took a song that I’m pretty sure is on loop in pergatory and made me not hate it…but on a night when Josh just destroyed and Phillip really stepped up his game, I don’t think that’s enough. A Joshua/Jessica final is still my dream scenario, but I can’t justly argue if it doesn’t play out that way. Re. P2’s last performnace, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Who knew what a lovely tone he canhave if he stops growling for two seconds! Part of why I think it’s curtains for the fabulous Miss Sanchez.

    • Miss Otis Regrets... says:

I don’t think so. Her fan base is rabid. I expect she’ll pull it out. Jessica first, Phillip second, Joshua third. Same order as their prospective sales will be. Reverse order of my favorites.

    • kb says:

Well, I give Jessica props (and votes) for covering Steven. Been waiting all season for her to get away from the diva ballads and I thought she did a good job with it. (May have been the only Aerosmith song that Steven actually sang instead of screamed). Sorta liked P2’s Seger cover too.

    • Jaxguy says:

Sandi I agree 100%. But I just hope she doesn’t go. I like Josh, but Jessica is the reason I’m watching. When Haley was axed last year I didn’t bother to watch the finale. Will skip it this year too if Jessica is not in the finals. And will call it quits. If a mediocre singer like Phil can make the final ahead of Jessica or JOsh, Hollie and Elise it’s just not worth wasting my time on. I can see Phil every night in a coffee house.

    • ivy says:

yeah. i also wasn’t feeling p2s last song. with jessica, i think her fans knew she was in trouble, being sick. i think they doubled their effort to keep her in the final 2. so we might still have her in the finale ^_^

  16. Sha says:

“No! More! DRAMA!” Joshua is just in a league all his own. WOO, preach it. He’s like an MJ/MaryJ/Whitney hybrid, simply amazing. He completely felt it and connected with the song. I hope people are voting for him despite getting the death slot!
Love Jessica but ugh the judges gave her a Mariah Carey song? seriously? and one of her most challenging to sing at that? smh.
Past history foreshadows that Phillip is making the finale no matter what…

    • Dollo says:

No, No More Drama was bad — it’s a bad song, of course, but he was so off key. If that’s going to church, no wonder people don’t go.

    • deedee says:

      OMG, is there a traditional “death slot” in the final 3? Going first spells doom? Oh, that seals it. Bye, Josh. Thanks for the crazy ride. I will always <3 U. :''-{

    • TheBeach says:

I think Randy watched that little moppet on X-factor sing (inappropriately) “I’d Rather Go Blind” and thought Joshua would kill it. Well, unfortunately, he over-killed it. Etta James, who owns that song, had more soul and blues in her little finger than most others, living or dead, have in their whole body. She sold that song with heartbreak, not over-singing.

I did like Josh on “Imagine”, though.

  17. Chris says:

Phillip’s aura and sound is the only one of the 3 that I could hear on the radio. The other 2 don’t seem to sound like people that one would listen to on the radio. I can appreciate both of their skill levels, but Phillip is just such a blast to watch and listen to. He’s the only one of the 3 that I really look forward to hearing, and I can’t wait to buy his first album, whether it be through Idol or another label.

    • Owen says:

You are kidding, right? Have you downloaded any of Jess’s songs? She is the MOST radio-friendly voice in the Top 8. Let alone the sheer greatness of her instrument, she has that type of voice that can cross over from R&B to pop. You may not like her type of singing (It would be wrong to argue taste, we like what we like), but saying her voice is not radio-friendly is just plain stupid.

      • Johnny says:

I think I understand what he means… he is talking about the fact that you don’t usually hear artists on the radio singing ballads with so many runs and leaps and fancy-ness, because they aren’t things that people could sing along to.

phillip’s music is easier to sing along to, which makes it appealing for radio… but that’s because his range isn’t huge. At least, I think that’s what he means….

      • afghan says:

You are right. I never liked Jessica. But, when Skylar got eliminated, I bought the whole album and was impressed by Jessica’s voice. She really sound better on my radio than Joshua.

      • ivy says:

i love her ballads most. my fave sweet dreams. nice

    • Dubliner says:

I agree completely. Jessica’s sound is out, and Joshua’s (in general) hasn’t been ‘in’ in decades. P2 is ready for radio.

      • Bonnie A. says:

        Totally agree. I love P2 ‘s
songs on my iPod but J&J ‘s wear me out to listen to and I can’t sing along. I think P2 will do great on the radio. Loved his last song especially and he other two also. Tried to vote a lot for him but were his three lines ever busy!!

    • Jaxguy says:

Blast? I don’t get it. His voice is so bland I can’t believe everyone is so crazy about him. But than again you do listen to regular radio, which is filled with crap anyway. So I guess it makes sense.

      • Chris says:

Actually, I don’t really listen to the radio that much. A lot of it is crap. But from what I hear, his music would turn up on the dial more often than some of the others, IMO. It is actually better than a lot of what is out there.
I like Phillip’s voice and his style, just my opinion… no need to put him down. Obviously you don’t like him – that’s your prerogative. Vote for yours; I’ll vote for mine.

I’m actually a classically trained musician, and I don’t listen to pop all that much – but like I said, he seems to fit into the mold of a radio-voice more so than the others. Not that they aren’t talented – Jessica and Joshua have huge voices.

        • Marsaili says:

Don’t mind Jax, Chris. His sole purpose in life is to post nasty comments about Phillip and repeat over and over and OVER again how he is in every coffee shop Jax has ever been in. I’m just wondering how Phillip manages to be in so many places at once–and what he ever did to garner such disdain from Jax. Thank you for your post, I love hearing what other musicians think, especially musicians that are in a total different genre of music!

      • tarc says:

Yes, we’ve long since established that you do not, indeed, ‘get it”. Ever. And you can call it ‘radio’ or the itunes Top 200 – same thing.

  18. Emma says:

Jessica was the weakest solely because of song choice. The second song was of her own choosing, but in the other two rounds, both guys got great picks from Randy/Steven and Jimmy. And then Jimmy and JLo had to give Jessica two sleepy ballads. I can’t tell if they were deliberately trying to get a Joshua-Philip finale, or honestly thought that those two songs were good choices for Jessica.

    • Marsaili says:

I actually felt that I’ll Be There was a perfect choice for Jessica and I was anticipating her killing it–instead she sang it exactly like the J5. I was disappointed in that—and HER song choice! I mean, this girl can do Beyonce’, Whitney, Mariah—and she chooses Aerosmith? WHY Jessica, Why????

      • Owen says:

I think, being a AI hound like she professes, Jessica trolls boards like this. And what Slezak and the rest of the bloggers keep telling her is to sing songs that she can make her own. To quit singing Whitney or Beyonce. Slezak always recommends an Idol sing a song made famous by someone of a different sex, its way easier to make a song your own that way. Notice she didn’t do Mariah’s “I’ll Be There” and I guarantee that’s the version she sings at home with a hairbrush in front of the mirror. She was mixing it up, last week she chose the Dreamgirls song, a number she sang amazingly, but very similarly to JHud. And this week she chose this. I agree the Aerosmith song was a bad choice, but I think it was the right type of choice…

      • chistosa says:

But that is the problem with Jessica. She always sings whatever song like the original artist. She still needs time to grow and develop into an artist. I still wish they would raise the age to 18. Both Hollie and Jessica would have benefited from that.

        • Owen says:

Well, that’s untrue for exactly the reason I stated. When you sing a song made famous by someone of your opposite sex, you CANNOT sing it like said original artist. Even though JLo said she sounded like Michael, the only thing she shared with his original vocal was the sweetness in the verses Her choruses were sorta wonderful and all her own.

        • Sha says:

I have to defend Jessica here. Yes, she can sing like Beyonce and JHUD but she has her own voice as well. Come on, you can’t say she sounded like the original artist on her Billy Joel song? or Celine Dion song? etc. etc.
Also, Hollie is 18 and I believe she was at the time of her audition as well seeing as she will be 19 very soon.

  19. Sam says:

Wait, this show is still happening without Elise, Skylar, Colton, and Hollie? I thought that the J/J/P final three would create a personality vacuum and drag everyone on earth into hell.

  20. Tara says:

I’m not crazy, I’m just a little underwhelmed…by the entire top 3. Last year’s was so freakin much better, even with Scotty I-did-the-same-performance-every-week-and-won McCreery. What this show needed this year and quite frankly never had was another Haley. Oh, and new judges. US Weekly’s reporting JHo won’t be back, and I’m all giggity over it possibly being true. :D

    • Sha says:

do you think that Lauren Alaina was more deserving of a top two spot than Jessica? Jessica sings circles around her and has accomplished so much more in her Idol run. I doubt she’ll make it through but she’s certainly worthy.

      • chistosa says:

True about the vocal ability. But Lauren Alaina had more personality. Truthfully, it should have Haley in the finale with Scotty but Lauren at least was interesting to watch. Another one who would have benefited from waiting a year or two.

        • Marsaili says:

I don’t know why people are always saying Lauren isn’t that good of a singer—personally, I think Lauren could give Jessica a run for her money. I have all the songs from last year—Lauren’s are just as good as Jessica’s—different style, but just as good.

    • jake says:

oh god, last season’s final 3 was AWFUL, i couldn’t even bring myself to watch — this is one of the best final 3 probably since doolittle, blake lewis and jordin sparks. Go jessica and philip!

  21. Tricia says:

    I only have 2 comments…..
    1. Joshua Ledet: John Lennon’s “Imagine” — David Archuleta did it better
    2. Jessica Sanchez: Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” — David Cook did it better

    • Kirk Sansom says:

I made the same comment while watching the show. Archie was much better, and I didn’t like him either. Best “Imagine” on a talent show ===> Star Search Tracey Spencer….phenomenal

    • sarcasmo says:

I like Jennifer Hudson’s version of “Imagine” more than Joshua’s. Several of the songs tonight need to be retired from the song choices.

    • me says:

REALLY!? WHO’S DAVID ARCHULETA AND WHERE’S DAVID COOK?LOL

    • Amy says:

      Amen, Tricia.
      1. By a Utah mile. He had “The Moment” with that song on Idol, never to be beaten. Nuf said.
      2. Yea.

  22. Annie says:

This was the most underwhelming top three night ever, and that’s saying something, since two of the contestants could probably go into the top ten or twenty list of the best idol contestants ever. It just came down to some bad song choices. It’s sad when Phillip had the best songs and the best arrangements, while Jessica had to deal with three songs that didn’t match her style, voice, or strong points. Joshua sounded great as usual, but only No Drama let him show who he is as an artist, but even that song had a downside, since 90 seconds just isn’t long enough for Joshua to really sell that song, even though he was good.

I don’t spread conspiracy theories, but I’d love to know why Jessica wasn’t given any songs that fit her. I just don’t understand that. She’s one of the best contestants ever, but horrible songs are going to keep her out of the final two, and even if she makes it over the much more deserving Joshua, they will cut short her chances of winning.

    • Marsaili says:

She did a great job on the Mariah song—SHE choose Aerosmith—she jinxed herself with that one and the J5 song was perfect for her—-she didn’t slay it. I think Jessica had the best song choices of them all and she just didn’t live up to them. Well, except for IDWMAT—I’ll never understand why she picked that song, of all the songs why that one???

      • chistosa says:

I did not like the Mariah song. I love the Mariah version but Jessica was a pale ghost compared to Mariah. No feeling.

        • Jaxguy says:

I hate the new Mariah. Her early stuff was great but as the years have gone by she sounds worse and worse. Don’t like that song at all. There are a million songs that would have showcased Jessica’s brilliant voice, but JLO and Jimmy picked these? Bad choices. But even still she wasn’t bad. Liked the Aerosmith the best though.

        • TheBeach says:

If J-Lo wanted Jessica to go with a Mariah song, there are so many others that would have showcased her voice better. That song is just blah to me and maybe it was because of the difficulty of the song (?) but Jessica had real breath contol issues tonight and kept dropping off the last words of the lines. It was not your typical Jessica performance.

          • tarc says:

Neither J-Lo or Jimmy did Jessica any favors this week. Her last two songs were *so* boring.

    • Tiff says:

I agree with you, Annie. I was pretty underwhelmed. The judges’ choices were the absolute worst – never heard such stupid choices in my life. Can’t believe how they bussed Jessica with “My All” – that’s easily the hardest song, and she deserved praise for that. The Etta James cover was obvious for Josh, and the Madcon song was obvious for Philip (although he decided not to sing the melody, which actually made me mad this time – seriously? You changed the melody to make it EASIER for you?).

Basically, the judges’ choices made it clear why Jimmy Iovine is the one working with the contestants. His choices were spot on – I think “I’ll Be There” was a great choice for Jessica, but she just didn’t do anything with it. No More Drama was the best song of the night – Josh owned it. And Phil had a nice performance that perfectly appealed to his fan base.

Anyway. It’s obvious that Philip will be in the finale. I think Josh should be as well, based on tonight, but I do believe Jessica is deserving as well. I have no idea how this is going to go.

    • ivy says:

hmm conspiracy theory…? maybe jimmy and tommy mottola had an agrement? remove jessica so Tommy can mentor/produce her albums? i know it’s wild thinking. hehehe

  23. Top 3 says:

Jimmy could’ve definitely chosen a better song to showcase Jessica’s voice. Joshua did well on the MJB song. I actually enjoyed Phillip singing “Beggin'” and he really did a great job on “We’ve Got Tonight”. I think that “I’d Rather Go Blind” would’ve been better suited for Jessica’s voice. Other than that, the performances (maybe song choices rather) were kind of mediocre to me. Not really sure who’s going to the finale.

  24. ashley says:

I’ve never liked Jesica, and she was especially unlikable tonight, in my opinion. Her high note on “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” was definitely off, or at least it seemed so at the time. So not only did I not like her voice tonight, I wasn’t even impressed by any glory notes. And not going big on “My All” was really not the best choice. I feel like she wimped out. Also, the song was wayyyy age-inappropriate. I’m kind of over Josh’s screeching, but I must say, “No More Drama” totally took me to church with JLo and Slezak. PP was awesome!! I loved all 3 songs, especially “Beggin’.” PP/Josh finale, let’s GO

    • Yvonne says:

Yes, Jessica was not only under, but she cracked badly and obviously on the glory note. Then the judges kissed her ass for it. Typical Idol coverup. lol

    • FreeHaley says:

Yeah she was under and then cracked that high note on top, but she’s been pretty pitch solid all season and some others blow bar and after bar and got even more praise the other week hah.

    • JC says:

If Phillip gets a pass on top 5 night for his off key performances why should Jessica be eliminated for an off night. Her past works are just in a different league and also note that Jessica is under the weather she was sick :)

      • Sha says:

Phillip’s a guy, of course he gets a pass for off nights:). Meanwhile, Jessica is raked over the coals…

      • tarc says:

Well, that’s predicated on the idea that Phillip is ‘off-key’. Voters disagreed, obvously.

        • Will says:

…Are you stupid? Someone can be both off-key AND voted through to the next round. In fact, sometimes being off-key or just not as good as everyone else bolsters fanbases to save their fave from disaster a la Hollie. Which is the point – Phillip was especially bad Top 5 night but got a pass anyway, and it should be no different for someone with a body of work as impressive as Jessica’s, when even Phillip could get a pass for a bad night, which, no matter how much you deny it, did in fact occur.

          • tarc says:

Oh, blah blah blah. Nine consecutive weeks of never being in the bottom, and ten consecutive weeks of not going home says something pretty obvious. Yes, it’s also a populatity contest, but then again, so is the music industry. No one got a ‘pass’ except for Jessica – from the judges. And you are obviously much more impressed by Jessica’s immature voice and too-old-for-her-age song selection than I am. She’ll be great – in 6-10 years.

        • ivy says:

and WG gets at least 2 years career life span

    • Jaxguy says:

Everyone who watches this show that has terrible taste loves PP’s songs. He was as horrible as always tonight. By far the best vocalist this season is Jessica. Do you actually have working hearing? HE FREAKIN: is the most ordinary performer on this show. Most of his fans hate Jessica. It just goes to show if you like ordinary you obviously can’t recognize greatness.Your loss.

      • tarc says:

LOL! I take Phillip Phillips music now, and Jessica Sanchez’s when she’s ready in a few years. No loss there.

  25. Spycigal says:

Once again Jimmy was the best at choosing tge songs followed by the Judges choice and the contestant’s choice seemed the weakest. For me Joshua was the best, followed by Phillip then Jessica. I felt Joshua built on what he’s been showing us all season, Phillip showed us more sides to what he does but all tge choice for Jessica were just flat when she needed to keep it sassy and powerful. Joshua & Phillip for the final!!!

  26. Joline says:

Please vote Jessica or Joshua for the sake of the show. Please not another cookie cutter white guy….anyone but P2.

    • Chris says:

Except Phillip was actually better overall than the other two tonight, when it mattered. He doesn’t have the best voice or biggest range, but the passion, power, and his musicality add to the voice.

Not to mention, when he sings up in his upper range, some of the notes really sounded nice. He has a pretty nice middle to high range, and he showed it off tonight.

    • Marsaili says:

I happen to LIKE Phillip–so why wouldn’t I vote for him? Geez, people, respect that others don’t like what you like and GET OVER IT!

    • Terri says:

I’d be ok with a cookie cutter white guy if he could actually sing.

      • Danny says:

Isn’t it funny that even when Phillip actually sings, he still gets hate?

I’m not a big fan of the guy, but jeez.. the last few weeks, he’s actually sung… sung melodies, and sung them high in his register and been pretty good at it. I don’t understand all these people who say he doesnt sing or he cant sing…. wow.

        • chistosa says:

I agree Danny. My favorite has been Josiah and of course Elise before she was eliminated. I found nothing appealing about Phillip but in the last few weeks he has upped the game and I see why he is in the final 3. He has serious potential. Never saw it before. So if people could put aside their bias about him being a white guy who plays the guitar, maybe they could see what so many see.

        • Terri says:

Agree to disagree. He didn’t sing We’ve Got Tonight well. I’ve only ever seen him struggle with higher notes. He can perform. He isn’t a good singer.

          • tarc says:

He’s a terrific singer. He’s just not the same kind of singer as Christina Aguilera. Neither was Billie Holliday, and Billie’s a hundred times the singer that Christina is. Apples and oranges.

          • Terri says:

Apples and oranges because those two are women and he’s not. Who suggested he or any of the Idols should be the same kind of singer as Christina Aguilera or Billie Holliday? I think an Idol should be a good singer. I don’t think he is.

          • tarc says:

I’m proving an example of people that you’d be sure to know. *sighs* It’s illustrative of a pop sensibility and an over-reliance on technical pyrotechnics as a standard of ‘singing’ is bankrupt. Phillip isn’t bad because he can’t sing like Christina, but he *is* good because he can sing with many of the qualities that make Billie one of the best singers ever. (And no, obviusly, I’m not equating Billie and Phillip in overall quality, but noting similarities in style and content to make a point.)

    • Miss Otis Regrets... says:

      I have a dream…

    • Chris says:

So you think people should vote for a black man or a white woman, but not a white man. Well, what if we think the white man is the best singer? Get over yourself!

      • Will says:

Well, then, out of these three, you’d be wrong. Phillip is the least capable singer of the three. I’m sure what you meant to say is that you like his singing the best. He isn’t the best singer. To think that is to just be wrong.

        • Marsaili says:

OH, so Will has spoken and has decided that if we like or vote for Phillip because we like him best–we are wrong. WHAT???? You do realize, in that egomaniacal mind of yours, that there IS no right or wrong in liking music? That it’s all subjective and what’s good for the goose isn’t necessary good for the gander? I don’t like Kesha–but I don’t go around telling people who like her that they are WRONG. Wow. The Phillip Hate (chug) just gets weirder and more intense every week!

          • NedPepper says:

I will. If you like Ke$ha, there is something very wrong with you.

          • Marsaili says:

            UGH!!! I SO want to agree with you–but I can’t—it’s all subjective………

          • Will says:

You need to reread what I said. I didn’t say you were wrong to like him best. In fact, that’s exactly what I said was probably meant. You are perfectly allowed to vote for the person whose voice you like the best. We all do that anyway, and to say you shouldn’t do that would be stupid. What I said was that Phillip is simply not the best singer. Joshua and Jessica have larger ranges and are overall better technical singers than Phillip is. It doesn’t mean you have to like their voices more, nor do you have to enjoy their style of singing, but they are better singers than Phillip is. It’s the same thing in Lee DeWyze vs. Crystal. Plenty of people liked Lee’s voice more than Crystal’s, but Crystal clearly was the better technical singer, with a larger range, more versatile voice, and better pitch, and when it comes right down to it, Jessica and Joshua are both more capable singers than Phillip. It doesn’t mean you’re wrong to like him, but what I’m saying is that you are wrong to say he’s the best singer. That’s it. It says nothing about your taste for his voice – just that he has something in his vocal style and genre and the general nature of his performances that overshadows the fact that he isn’t as good of a technical vocalist as his competitors. It’s really no big deal.

          • Marsaili says:

But it doesn’t matter who is the best technical vocalist—Geez, Bob Dylan isn’t a technical vocalist at all in any way, shape or form—but he’s also one of the most beloved singer/songwriters EVER. Idol isn’t about who is the best vocalist, either—Idol is about the WHOLE PACKAGE. Joshua is the whole package. Phillip is the whole package. Jessica isn’t yet—but she will be and she could very well be bigger than Joshua and Phillip—but that doesn’t matter either. People are all “the guys never do as well as the girls” and so what—only 2 girls have gone to super-stardom—Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Super Stardom is a RARE THING—and just because someone is the Idol does not guarantee they will be a super star. The point is that the show gives these kids a chance to show off their talent—and the people who grow fond of them during the show can choose to buy their music. I doubt that there will ever be another Carrie or Kelly, that doesn’t happen that often in the real world, the fact that it happened twice from Idol is pure luck. But—the guys who have come off Idol—the ones who aren’t technical singers (and I think we can pretty much put them all into that category—except, perhaps, Adam Lambert) are making a living playing their music—people are buying their music—and they are no longer bartenders or paint store employees or high school students just living or musical dinner theater singer/actors—they are all touring, making records and doing well. THAT is what Idol is all about!

          • tarc says:

And I’ll point out again, nonsense. It’s opinion (pure vlaue judgement) to rank a singer based on range, or any one of the various possible technical components. As I’ve mentioned before: Billie Holliday would score objectively on a technical level to Christina Aguilera, yet is still a hundred times the singer.

        • tarc says:

Um, no. I wouldn’t be wrong. Not a bit. Apples and oranges. Billie Holliday is a hundred times the singer than Christina Aguilera is, and you’re argument does not accomodate something that obvious.

          • Will says:

I think you’re confused between “singer” and “performer”

Singer is specific to only singing ability – range, versatility, and technical ability only.
Performer also applies the whole performance, how much one “feels” a song, and how well they engage with a song and the audience. By your statement, I’m sure you mean that Billie Holliday is (to you) 100 times the performer that Xtina is, but this is the point at which personal taste comes into the equation, and what one enjoys personally affects this opinion. Who the best “singer” is is very sterile and based on a clear set of criteria, which is why someone can be a very good singer but come across as a sterile performer who doesn’t seem to connect (many people thought this of Pia Toscano, though I personally did not). Who you like better, or who you find to be the better performer, however, is a completely different question that is completely unrelated to how good of a singer someone is, though their singing ability will certainly factor into your enjoyment of them, it is not the end-all-be-all, otherwise, the music industry would be very, very different.

          • tarc says:

No, I’m not confused. And no, singing is not confined to range, versitility, and technical ability. By defination: singing is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice, and augments regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm. You cannot adequately separate your categories of ‘singing’ and ‘performing’. It certainly doesn’t happen in university voice evaluations. I’ll also posit that evaluation of technical elements are as subjective as elements you shift to performance. Xtina can sing many kinds and variations on run, but she’s cr_p at scatting. She might score high in run to some, but others view her virtual inability to sing a simple melody as a fatal technical flaw. And the inherent value of these components also varies by subjective opinion: some would argue that runs and range are important, while other place more value on original material or emotional conveyance.

    • Radar says:

And yet there was an outpouring of support for Taylor Hicks and Lee DeWyze as well. Love David Cook and Kris Allen but none of these guys has broken through to sell on a superstar scale. I agree with OP. Need to mix it up otherwise it’s just too predictable.

      • GeorgeR says:

Superstar no but David Cook made 3 million and Kris 1.6 in 2010 not so bad a couple years after Idol and they are still young.

        • Owen says:

David Cook was dropped by the record company a couple weeks ago and Kris will be dropped any moment now…

          • Marsaili says:

It was a mutual decision for Cook to leave the record company—he wanted to do more of his own music. Being dropped from the record company (especially for Idols) isn’t always a bad thing.

          • Owen says:

Dude. Come on. You actually believe that?

    • Dubliner says:

I agree – no cookie cutter guy: Phillip for the win.

    • Jaxguy says:

THis show is getting worse every year. If Phillip wins, another ordinary bland performer, his fans may keep watching but many of the others will probably call it quits. There hasn’t been a really great winner on this show in years. I won’t be sucked in again after this year.

  27. nikkiqm says:

I am a big Jessica fan but tonight she needed a BIG moment and didn’t have one. I love her voice and think she deserves to go to the finale though. I thought Joshuas first performance was just ok, his second his best, and his third his worse of the night. I know it was Mary J but even for a Mary J song it was toooooo much holleration. Phils first song was pretty good, his second was good but typical Phil performance but he killed it with his last song. Best performance of the night, he doesn’t have the greatest vocal abilities but he showed he can sing more softly and in tune and with melody. Also I think the home town packages did Phil a lot of favors. He came off as humble and very likeable. Not so much for the other 2.

    • Davey says:

So if you’re a Jessica fan why aren’t you voting for her instead of putting her down here. I just voted 2 straight hours for her.

  28. crazigrami says:

I don’t think any of them had a moment that was stupendous. They were all good. Joshua is not my favorite but he delivered. Jessica struggled a little with Mariah. BTY David Cook did an awesome job with Always Be My Baby, Mariah has been done before and well. P2 is the most improved. I am sure the vocal coaches are top rate, I could listen to a P2 concert in a smaller venue. I think it would be interesting. I don’t know what Jessica would record. She is so well trained but she’s going to need great pop writers to be big. Do either Joshua or Jessica write? Anybody know? I think P2 might do better being out of the top spot. More career choice.

  29. Allyson says:

Joshua deserves to be in the finale! He earned it with his outstanding performances! I believe he and Jessica should be the final two. Ok, Phillip is not bad, and will do well, but I don’t want to see another similar Idol winner like we have been getting for the past 3 seasons. If I know anything the tween voters will be voting for Phillip. I don’t dislike him, but I am tired of hearing the same winners year after year. Lets change it up with Josh and Jessica in the finale! Josh should be the next American Idol!!!!

  30. Ash1157 says:

More than ever, P2 reminded me of Lee Dewyze tonight. Nice kid, sweet papa…and ultimately will win. Bummer.
My $$ will be spent on future Josh “joints.”

      • Tiff says:

Because Josh is obviously better than P2. Everything Philip sings is the same. He has a limited range and he fits perfectly into that white guy alt rock mold. Idol needs someone new and better.

Look, I have no problem with WGWGs if they’re good – David Cook was great. But Philip is not good. He does the same performance over and over again.

        • Miss Otis Regrets... says:

Do yourself a favor and stop thinking in race all the time. It’s not fair to the contestants.

        • tarc says:

Not obvious to me. In fact, quite the opposite. And his songs aren’t much alike at all – no more than, say, any other blues-rock band out there.

  31. Jennifer says:

WHAT? I loved “Beggin'” It’s an awesome song…I was expecting the judges to go all Casey James on Phillip and give him an overplayed John Mayer song or something of that nature, but they surprised me! I’m a little nervous for Jessica tonight. I don’t think any of her songs really worked or provided the right moment that she needed. “My All” could have been great, but she struggled vocally. Also, am I the only one who thought the first half of “No More Drama” was a hot mess? I mean…Joshua sang the bejeezus out of the end, but it didn’t make me forget that I was not feeling the beginning of a song I thought he would straight up own from the first note. His other performances were solid, though. GAH! It’s tough. Week for week, Jessica and Joshua deserve that finale…but I think Phillip had the best night overall (from show placement, to song choice, to hometown package) and has obviously had some very memorable performances himself. We’ll see…

  32. Minikitty says:

I saw Stanly behind Steven Tyler tonight. :D

  33. Michael says:

Joshua KILLED ‘No More Drama’ and honestly I can’t picture a finale without him. And Jessica.

On a different note, Slezak…what is with your hate for Randy? He messes up one word and you’re all over him, which is pretty crazy of you considering the guy knows more about music than 99% of people. He’s also the best judge out there, not constantly gushing when it’s not warranted (Jessica’s 2nd performance anyone?). Who cares if he says ‘yo’ or ‘sing the I don’t know what out of’ (which I happen to think is funny) a lot, the fact that you constantly doubt his musical integrity and prowess is astonishing to me.

But I still love your recaps :)

    • Terri says:

Randy is verbally challenged and says the weirdest stuff every episode.

    • Miss Otis Regrets... says:

      I know, right? It’s not like he’s a WGWG…

    • Musicfan123 says:

It was hard for me to get into that song knowing it is the theme of the stupid soap Young in the Restless..Sorry, me no likey the song.

    • Miscellaneopolan says:

Oh, no, that cannot stand. Randy Jackson has to be the most ridiculous man on television. It’s far more than messing up one word. How about name-dropping “Mariah,” and drawing out the fact that he agrees with the other judges about Phillip’s second song, and over-praising Phillip’s third song to high heaven? He’s just… a baffling individual.
      .
I know there’s been talk of J.Lo. leaving and that no one here seems to like the judges very much, but I think Randy is by far the most useless. J.Lo. sometimes tries to give constructive comments, and even though little of what Steven says makes sense at least it’s occasionally entertaining. “Get used to it because you’re never gonna.” What? Oh, Steven Tyler.

    • FreeHaley says:

“He’s also the best judge out there”

      hmmmmmmmmmmm

  34. FreeHaley says:

Ugh Randy is such a tool (I know shocker). I actually loved Iovine’s choice for Jessica the best. And come on Randy calls Phillips last performance the best? Yeah sure it lets him sing but come on that was hardly the moment of the other. I even liked him better on his first song alone. Randy is such a joke, trying to make the pimp spot out of nothing. Sure it was nice to see him carry a tune, but I mean come on, now you get credit for see he could carry a simple tune!

    • Jaxguy says:

Randy obviously wants the 2 boys. He loved the 2 guys at the last. The last impression of Jessica was she wasn’t that great. Randy you are a tool.

    • TheBeach says:

Yep, maybe they should resurrect that old show “Tool Time” starring Randy Jackson.

    • Cris says:

I think it was a defensive stance on the part of Randy. He must have felt insulted when the audience booed him for the no moment comment on Jessica. He stood immediately after Phillips performance and talked about Phillip’s having the moment. Even when Steven commented that Phillips was off note, but sang with passion, Randy was quick to interject his agreement.

I know the song We’ve Got Tonight, but I didn’t have that moment that Randy was talking about.

So, singing off note, but passionately, is now a good yardstick for an standing ovation? Hey DAWG, what’s wrong with you?!

      • Marsaili says:

Oh so Randy only stood for Phillip because he was pissed that people booed him for his Jessica critique? LOL, that is the lamest thing I’ve read all day. What would we do without you mind-readers to tell us what the judges or the contestants are thinking and why they are doing what they do?

        • Cris says:

Yes, I stand by with I say. His comments sounded off to me as defensive

          • Marsaili says:

I just watched the performance again and they sound like typical Randy comments—and he genuinely seemed to like Phillip’s performance. I can understand not liking Phillip—but making things up to discredit his performance is just wrong.

          • Cris says:

I didn’t say I didn’t like how Phillip sang it. Actually I liked it. But not with the wow moment that Randy may have seen or felt. My original comment was a criticism on Randy, and not meant to discredit Phillip.

          • Marsaili says:

            Woops, sorry about that!

  35. Yvonne says:

Jessica was atrocious and NEEDS TO GO HOME TOMORROW. It’s too bad Elise could not have been in the Top 3 instead of her. Then we would have had a solid show tonight. When Jessica came on stage, she was dull as hell and it killed the momentum.

    • Jaxguy says:

You are surely a PP fan. she was far from atrocious. AI is going down in flames so you may get your wish. I hope America will stop watching a show that keeps voting bland and dull performers to the top. Maybe if that happens another show will come along and establish sensible voting rules and this crap will stop happening.

      • tarc says:

The great thing about that is that we’ll see precisely how badly Idol ‘sucks’ with actual data. And the reality of it is, there will never be voting that you like – they cater to the demos of the people that buy the most music. Der.

  36. NedPepper says:

Joshua. That’s all I need to say. He deserves to win. Whether it be against Phillip, who was up and down tonight, or Jessica, who got horrendous song choices, the winner of this season SHOULD BE Joshua Ledet. Period.

  37. db says:

Mike you are usually right on…..but (don’t you hate that) P2 killed that first song and it was the best of the night. Tyler nailed him down. Lovine threw Jessica (a song to a rat from Willard…really?) and P2 doing Bob Seager under the bus. And he should throw himself under a train….lol….whew!. He gave Josh a modern song in contrast. My humble opinion. Josh was 1 for 3; Jessica 1-3, and P2 1-3. I did like the Josh hometown though and it felt more polished than the rest…not sure why it felt that way………..But in the end, it is about taste in music isn’t it….so you are right….about that. I have to say that I agree with Randy…ugh….I do get the like for Josh….I wish good music would come back to…so I do get the ideal. He has a natural talent, but I think all three have that. Who knows who is left standing. Good bunch though.

    • Owen says:

The song from Willard that Michael Jackson sang is called “Ben”.

    • Kirk Sansom says:

The song to a rat from Willard was “Ben” not I’ll be there

    • deedee says:

“I’ll Be There” is not a song to a rat. You’re thinking of “Ben”.

      • db says:

Sorry, you are all right….I like Mike have too much wine sometimes……when watching…lol…. I guess of all the good stuff they could have put these two on and something more modern, those choices weren’t it. I don’t think it is likely anybody will remake those two song choices in the next 50 years either…..Sorry about the rant….I like all their potential…

  38. FreeHaley says:

The last Phillip song just reminded me how it’s all he can do to manage a basic melody, he pulled it off, but only just. The middle one was a little a dull. First one was pretty cool. It’s cool he has done his whole thing and all and not let the show do anything to his ways but he’s OK. Audience squealed and cheered and jumped insanely for him so I think he is a lock though.

I liked Jessica’s first one, tough song, that shows some skills! Aerosmith was a little bit of a weird choice since she is just not a rock it out, yeah it was one of their ballads, I mean it was pretty good and fun but maybe she shoulda done something like what she ended with last week there. I loved her last song. I still think Randy was, well never even mind on that. And he also made it sound like it was her fault for picking a no moment song, hello she didn’t freaking pick it AND I actually the whole thing was a bit of moment actually. Nobody had a moment like last week level though.

    Joshua was solid.

I want Elise to win! I voted for her like 39 times already. Weird thing is it keeps saying your call can not connect….

OK, OK, barring that I’m tossing my hat into the Jessica ring. Threw her 10-15 votes.

  39. Owen says:

It doesn’t really matter at this stage. 19 is signing all three, you can bet your DVR.

  40. Kirk Sansom says:

I didn’t care for any of Joshua’s songs, though, I rarely do. And though I rarely like Jessica, I actually enjoyed her first and 3rd songs. P2’s first and 3rd songs were really good.and even though I don’t like the song “Disease” it sounded ok.. So you know I voted for Phillip. I didn’t stop getting periodic busy signals until close to the second hour of dialing.

  41. mcfudge says:

The only thing I liked all night was Phillip’s first song. Everything else was just meh to me. Jessica got horrible songs to sing. I’ll Be There? Really, Jimmy??? Yawn.

    • Miscellaneopolan says:

And she didn’t get to growl even once. I mean, I know people seem to not like when she overuses the growl, but considering she got to sing three songs I was hoping for Bebe Chez to show up at least one time. It would have been very welcome on a night that was pretty sleepy.
      .
On a side note, Shannon Magraine was sure noticeable in the audience wasn’t she? Big ol’ smile. And I loved Elise’s slightly pout-y face. It was like she was watching the whole production and thinking “I could do better.” She probably could have.

  42. Joe says:

At the end of the day we should all consider ourselves lucky for seeing Josh Ledet become Josh Ledet on this show. He is the most talented singer they’ve had since Lambert and probably the most talented male vocalist in the history of the show. Whether he wins or not, he made this season special with his voice. He’s exactly what I love about watching these stupid singing shows. Once in awhile they find “the one”. He wasn’t good tonight. He was magnificent. And I hope they have him sing a tune with Fantasia at the finale because that will bring the roof down on the place.

    • Miscellaneopolan says:

Joshua should sing with Fantasia, Jessica with Beyonce, Phillip with Dave Matthews, Hollie with Celine Dion, Skylar with Miranda Lambert and Elise with Steven Tyler (Walk This Way).
      .
Honestly, I’m not too interested in the finale, but I am looking forward to the finale results show.

    • chistosa says:

      Agree.

    • sara says:

Hear hear!! However mad this show makes me at times, I’m really really grateful that it introduced him to me. I’m sure as hell going to follow his career, no matter what happens tonight.

  43. Thom0065 says:

I thoguht she did well with Mariah… and PP version of We got Tonight … just a tad out of tune and a tad boring .. other than that lets stand up for him as those thing dont matter …Jeez!

BTW whre was Jessica going to pull a moment out of a that song by Jimmy???

    • kb says:

Agree completely. If she’d tried to force a moment into that there’d be nothing but criticism. For the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking that something by Pink could let her show some chops. But then, everybody’s been harping about the age appropriateness and the emotional conneciton, so not gonna hear that.

  44. Chuck says:

None of them were at their best. Part of it was definitely song choices, but I think nerves were a factor too.

Joshua was probably best (his first and third songs), while Phil’s We’ve Got Tonight was the worst–he failed on the high notes again, and whenever he has to sing a ballad without his guitar, it’s just embarrassing. Jessica had one big failure on My All, and two so-so performances with uninspired song choices.

Nothing that happened tonight makes me look forward to next week.

  45. Jane says:

I can’t believe that was a Matchbox 20 song PP sang. I didn’t recognize it at all, and not in a good way. Please go home! I know it won’t happened, but I can wish. Poor Jess, she had kind of an bad night. The 2nd half of Don’t Want to Miss a Thing sounded off. She never quite hit the chord change and the last note had to be adjusted to sound in tune. And some of the notes in the first song were out of her range. Why did they pick that song for her? Sabotage? I was pulling for her. All male finale, here we come.

  46. CAM says:

    Missed Skylar tonight…

  47. WishesRandyCouldn'tSpeak says:

    Here’s my opinion on it:
    Josh was great.
About Philip and Jessica – K I get it, Philip had more ‘moment’s tonight and Jessica for the first time ever was not perfect. Does that mean he deserves to be in the finale with Joshua? No way. He is great I’m not saying that he has no tone or wtvr and I could care less about the “wgwg” thing (and I am NOT a philip hater lol don’t get me wrong here) — I’m saying after this whole entire SEASON, Jessica was 100000x better than Philip. And that’s why I think she should be in the top 2 and not Philip even though he did great tonight.

PS. Judges/Jimmy tried to destroy Jessica tonight with their song choices — They always do that with one of them, examples : Syesha (season David vs David), Vonzell (Season 4 with Carrie/Bo), …HALEY.. etc

    • Marsaili says:

Oh please, she got a Mariah song that she killed—SHE picked an Aerosmith song—HER PICK—dumb, dumb, dumb. and Jimmy’s pick was perfect for her—but she sang it exactly like the Jackson’s–no individuality in there at all. If anyone is at fault for Jessica’s night–it is Jessica with her song pick—that was her turn to shine, instead she smoldered out.

      • ivy says:

when they get do records there are writers and composers aplenty out there to do all that. all they have to be are great singers.

    • Dubliner says:

I’d be a very strange world if Jessica was 100000x better than P2. I’m so glad I don’t live there. Jessica gave three 3rd place performances tonight.

  48. RAEsin says:

You guys are nuts to knock Phillip.. enough with that “GWG” stuff already. Scotty last year deserved to win,and this year, it doesn’t even matter who wins, they ALL deserve it… but come on you have to admit Phillip is captivating when he sings.

    • FreeHaley says:

Scotty one note deserved to win last year????????? Play the first three bars of any of his performances and you heard the rest of his entire season. Gimme a break. He never even had a single performance of the night and even TPTB and judges I don’t think ever managed to acclaim even try to claim that and that really tells you something.

      • chistosa says:

He did deserve to win. He is highly marketable and selling a lot of records. An idol is not neccesarily the best singer. It is the one who draws in the audience, connects with them and motivates them to come out for his/her performances and buy his/her music. Scotty does that. Was he the best vocalist? No. That would be Haley last year. But he is definitely idol material.

    • macy says:

Yes, I do find Phillip to be captivating when he sings — that is a great way to describe it!

Many people here seem to be trying to compare Phillip with the others, when they are apples and oranges. Imagine a competition between Norah Jones and Celine Dion. Everyone would be on here knocking Norah Jones saying she doesn’t have the power and has a thin voice. But they are two different kinds of singers, and Norah’s first CD won five Grammys.

Or imagine Bruce Springsteen in a competition with Mariah Carey. People here would be saying Bruce has limited range, can’t hold a tune, doesn’t have Mariah’s passion. But they are two different kinds of singers!!! And Bruce has been successful for more than 30 years.

      • Mary B says:

        Agree 100% with on this.

      • Name That Tune says:

Well, this is a competition. Someone will win, someone will lose. Do you choose the winner based on the “type” of artist they are or who is the best performer? If you have eclectic tastes, you can enjoy ANY type of performer, as long as they do what they do well. And that’s where I have a problem with P2. He doesn’t always do what he does very well. Jessica, OTH, is usually flawless in her delivery, but if she doesn’t have guidance, she makes poor song choices.
        —————————–
People don’t vote based on the performances. They vote based on WHO they like. So who is more popular – P2 or Jessica? History tells us the WGWG will be there at the end. One good artist will be lost tonight. Joshua will beat out Jessica, and P2 will be there, just because that’s the way it is.

  49. Jennifer says:

For Phillip’s last song I was too distracted by his hand. Watch it again and you will see what I mean!

  50. Illeana says:

If there is any justice Jessica will not make the finale. She was awful tonight and the two guys sang circles around her!!!
