Idol Leaderboard: Who Is Your Favorite from the Top 5? (Take Our Poll!)

Attention, Idoloonies! There are only 24 days till the American Idol Season 11 finale, but still plenty of opportunities to pull ahead (or fall to pieces) in your office Idol pool. Indeed, there’s not much separating first from last place as the Top 5  vocalists head into British Music Week, but that won’t stop me from trying to rank ’em.

So check out my weekly countdown of who’s got momentum heading into the live show, and who’s already shopping for a steel-collared shirt to wear on Thursday Night Guillotining with Ryan Seacrest. Then, take our poll and vote for your own favorite!

American Idol: What Should the Top 5 Cover for ‘British Music’ Week?

5. Hollie Cavanagh (Last Week No. 6) | Previous Bottom 3 staples like Syesha Mercado and Haley Reinhart managed to eventually crack the Top 3, so don’t count out this big-voiced, Texas-by-way-of-Liverpool diva just yet. Her last two weeks have been her strongest to date, and inscrutable criticism from the judges and Jimmy only serves to rally her fan base. That said, still needs to up her game in terms of song selection and stage presence.

4. Jessica Sanchez (Last Week No. 4) | Biggest voice in the Season 11 lineup needed the Judges’ Save to survive a seventh-place shock boot, but that scare put her core fans on speed-dialing alert for the rest of the season. In nine weeks of live performances, she’s barely missed a note, but the judges continue to ask for more energy and excitement, while Jimmy has noted her penchant for choosing songs that are too old for her tender age (i.e. “Try a Little Tenderness,” “Bohemian Rhapsody”). Success or failure may hinge on whether she can showcase her radio-readiness via hip, soulful numbers like “Fallin'” and “Sweet Dreams” to an audience hungry for another mainstream Idol breakout.

3. Joshua Ledet (Last Week No. 3) | Brilliantly stripped down “Ready for Love” in Top 6 week — a nice reminder that he doesn’t need a Gospel chorus or frenetic funk to connect with the audience — and he’s been perhaps the most consistent contestant this entire season. (Even his detractors can only criticize his outré vocal style, not his grasp of pitch or emotional connectedness.) Biggest hindrance now might be that the judges’ kneejerk standing ovations for every one of his performance could turn off an audience sensitive to overpimping.

American Idol: 10 Dream Theme Nights!

2. Skylar Laine (Last Week No. 1) | Country has become a key component of the Idol landscape, and but this party-startin’ Mississippi firecracker has a monster-truck voice to match her personality and saucy persona. “The Show Must Go On” was absolutely stunning, but couldn’t keep her out of the Bottom 3 amid very tight competition — possibly the result of her second performance, a low-key Jason Aldean hit that may not have spoken to the larger Idol audience. Still, her ability to bend songs to fit her country style should/may be enough to carry her to hometown visits.

1. Phillip Phillips (Last Week No. 2) | Avoided the Bottom 3 despite a good-not-great “Fat Bottomed Girls” and a truncated Dave Matthews Band cover that polarized the judges and the audience, too. May be benefitting from a backlash to the “white guys with guitars” backlash — it seems a little uncouth to judge a contestant based on his gender and skin color, even if it’s in relation to the last four Idol winners — but mark my words: Phillip will not make the finale if he’s not careful with pitch and if he fails to show creativity in his song choices/arrangements over the next three weeks. Really, it’s up to him!

I’m too much of a Dave Matthews fan to like Philip. Maybe if I haven’t heard of DMB’s music I would have like Philip. It’s Jessica/Joshua/Skylar for me. Skylar is my third pick just because I’m not into country otherwise it’ll be Jessica and Skylar for my top 2. It’ll be nice to have an all women finale after such a long time.

  2. Sam says:

Honestly phillip will win whether ppl like it or not. If u say he wont u r either in denial or havent watched this show before. It is so obvious he is running away with the votes. He is a mixture of the last four winners. A little rock in him like david cooke, kris allen good looks, lee dewye kinda feel and the southern type charm like scotty. I knew he would win from his audition this show is so predictable

  3. Anthony says:

tbh, i didn’t think josh would make it so far after landing himself in the bottom 3 guys the first week..not because he’s no talented (which he definitely is) but because he doesn’t really have such a strong fanbase….one bad performance may get him colton-ed out…tbh, josh seems to be saving himself each week by dishing out awesome performances…just for his consitency in delivering on-point performances each week, he deserves to be in the finals!^^

JESSICA SANCHEZ-16,she really has what it takes,if America’s bottomline will still the race she can’t win the title, but,if America will try a different flavor of an icon/star then she is THE ONE….

    2nd safe
JOSHUA LEDET-19,powerful voice he has,he is “BI” like adam, jacob, clay, but they didn’t win the title, but they are amazing talented people,,,he needs to balance when to shout and not…

    3rd safe
PHILIP PHILIPS-20,adorable,has “it” factor but for the past season we have a winners with a man with a guitar, hmmm, same dessert?turn out a beast hearthrob on the stage ,some likes it,some are not…

    4rth safe
SKYLAR LAINE-18,country musics feels you at home, with her performance?so redundant so last year, she needs to experiment her songs,or else people will compare her from other country singers.

    5th safe
HOLLIE CAVANAGH-18, cute she is,like a hollywood actress, she has a problem on the stage ,off key with her songs, pitchy, needs more effort, she should beat the stage,or else she’ll be on the bottom…

Jessica certainly has the IT factor that crosses so many potential worldwide album buyers. She has sung songs in three languages and has soul powerhouse leanings that has a sassy side ( which I believe Steven Tyler kind of smothered with hisvsilly ballad comment early on). I hope she does not get pressured so much to sing her age, but to sing her talent! Maybe even pick songs that push the boundaries a bit the way a teen ager would who is making that transition into adult hood. It’s also a statement for the tv show to remain relevant worldwide.

  5. Jane says:

I wish there was a choice for “don’t care anymore” in your poll. Elise was the last interesting contestant left. Any of them could win, but I’d prefer a non-country idol this year. I think Jessica has the potential for actual success in the music biz, though. It’s important that idol turn out another Kelly or Carrie, or it will become even more about the lame tv part and less about the talent. It’s already starting to happen. I don’t remember Ryan asking Justin if Kelly was his girlfriend or the old judges being there to promote their latest single. Also, I still can’t believe they had a whole show of Hollywood week that didn’t show 1 singing performance. And of course, female contestants use to actually have a chance to win. But now, you have to be cute (forget about actual talent) in order to win. No offence to Kris Allen fans, but the last few winners have pretty much faded into obscurity. It would be nice to see a idol winner have a career that lasts longer than 2 years before they start headlining county fairs. BTW, where’s the new idology this week??

    • Jane says:

Just looked up idol winners record sales. William Hung’s album “Inspiration” sold more copies than Lee DeWyze’s “Live it up.” Come on America, we can do better than this!

  6. just dropping in to say how amusing it is that “overpimping” is now a word that has firmly entered the english language. ha.
