Walking Dead Exclusive: Lauren Cohan Promoted to Series Regular For Season 3

Get More: Casting News, Exclusive

Lauren Cohan The Walking DeadLauren Cohan is heading into The Walking Dead‘s third season with a most rare gift: job security.

The actress — who recurred throughout the AMC smash’s killer second season as Hershel’s eldest daughter, Maggie — has been elevated to a full-fledged series regular, TVLine has learned exclusively.

More Walking Dead: Major Season 3 Spoilers!

While the promotion would seem to indicate that Glenn’s sweetheart will figure prominently in the show’s upcoming third season, it by no means guarantees she’ll make it out of the season alive. Jon Bernthal and Jeffrey DeMunn were both full-timers when their characters, Shane and Dale respectively, were whacked.

The Walking Dead‘s 16-episode third season, slated to premiere this fall, will likely be divided into two part (much the same way Season 2 was). “The idea is we will do eight-and-eight,” exec producer Robert Kirkman recently told TVLine. “Getting eight-and-eight will almost be like doing two seasons a year, which is cool.”

More Walking Dead: Shane Lives?!

Cohan, meanwhile, is keeping busy during her hiatus. The actress is set to be “resurrected” on The Vampire Diaries on April 19.

  • Great. The most boring character gets more screen time.

    • Well lets just hope that her character turns into a basket case like the comic book – Glen is in for a real ride!

  • This isn’t really a surprise to be honest.

Comment by Jarrod – April 10, 2012 07:02 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • That was my initital thought too. Though I am glad she is a regular, it doesn’t really mean anything considering that anyone can be whacked.

  • She’ll be underwritten, inconsistent and at times turn into Lady MacBeth.

Welcome to the female cast of Walking Dead Lauren Conrad! Hope you enjoy standing in the background.

    • Lauren Conrad? This isn’t The Hills or Laguna Beach.

      • If only it where…Who wouldn’t love to see Spencer and Heidi and the rest of them get eaten by zombies?

    • so true–Lori is the worst character of ALL time–infuriating, frustrating and boring to watch!

Comment by tim – April 10, 2012 10:04 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Just because YOU don’t like her doesn’t necessarily make her a worst character. Silly, silly Tim.

Comment by Tania – April 10, 2012 02:52 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Maybe TIM, if she took off her clothes and spread her legs you would like her better. Huh???

Comment by Sandy – April 15, 2012 05:41 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • I don’t know about Tim’s likes. But generally speaking, that does it for me most of the time. Cheers.

    • You could say this to the sole african american character who appears on each episode but literaly utter no more than 18 words ( we actually counted ). Total screentime in the entire season 51 seconds. The writers do not know what to do with its B-listers. Every character on there has had a relative , a love interest and even flashback scenes provided some insight into the lives of the recurring characters . he is the only one who moves about like a chess piece. Come to think of it half of the current shows have serious problem with their sole african american characters. What a strange world . Even the fictional world is problematic if you have some melanin lol!

      • One word – Michonne

Comment by Carlos Tomas Chavez (@Freemankeyz) – April 10, 2012 10:48 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Totally agree. I think they missed the boat when they did not bring in Tyrese, a great African American character from the comics (and his wierd daughter and her boyfriend). Not saying he won’t be brought in yet but there’s been no information on that. T-Bone just seems to be there in case Merl shows up.

        • I do miss Tyreese and his hammer from the comics. He and Rick have an interesting dynamic, which I think would play well on the show.

Comment by wordsmith – April 10, 2012 01:03 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • No to mention, they are bringing Tyreese into the show. I don’t know if you’ve read the comics, but he is Rick’s right-hand-man at the prison. I always thought they had T-Dog and Daryl on the show because they were a composite of Tyreese. But, alas, he is coming too. So not only will there be T-Dog, but there will be Michone and Tyreese…..not to mention that Morgan also returns when they head off to DC. So that’s four, with three known characters that have major roles. Calm down.

      • get over it allready!! i,m sure he,ll get a lot more senes in the upcomming 3 season. he,s a strong person and makes a fine addition to the cast. don,t worry he,ll be back in full force.

      • Does everything have to turn racial? Now that Sophia is dead, Carol hasn’t had a lot to day either!

Comment by Denise – April 21, 2012 10:47 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Yeah, I’d be more surprised if she wasn’t promoted at this point. Given the downfall of both Dale and Shane at season’s end, how does being a series regular = job security on this show?

Comment by MrMank – April 10, 2012 07:05 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • The only ones with job security – so far – is the actors who play Rick and probably Carl (unless he grows too fast and they need to replace him with another kid).

Comment by Snsetblaze – April 10, 2012 10:51 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Daryl is so popular, I’m sure is has job security, for now at least!

Comment by Denise – April 21, 2012 10:49 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I know they’re not as prominent, but Melissa McBride (Carol) and IronE Singleton (T-Dog) have been it for the past two seasons and I firmly believe that they deserve to be promoted just as much.

Comment by Jarrod – April 10, 2012 07:06 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I agree for Melissa McBride. She deserves to be a regular.

    • Melissa McBride (Carol) was already made a series regular in season 2.

Comment by taylorrness – April 10, 2012 04:20 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • That’s what I’ve been thinking Melissa McBride (Carol) was a series regular long before Sophia was killed (and the thing with Daryl begin). That doesn’t mean she’s safe either, just look at Dale and Shane.

Comment by Dale's RV – April 11, 2012 02:44 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I am PERFECTLY alright with this news- she’s nice on the eyes.

Comment by Peter Venkman – April 10, 2012 07:07 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • So now we basically have a character with characteristics of BOTH Andrea and Lori? Great. Another female character we can hate.

Comment by Jarrod – April 10, 2012 07:08 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • God, I’d love to have her become a mini-Andrea, but she’s nowhere near as much of a BAMF and a lot more obnoxiously Lori like. Plus, well, comics spoilers.

Comment by Mars777 – April 10, 2012 09:41 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • In what planet the only daughter who still has a father, the only girlfriend on an interracial relationship and the only woman who uses a baseball bat for a weapon is a mini Lori? Or a mini Andrea?!

Comment by Dale's RV – April 11, 2012 02:49 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that Jarrod isn’t none too darn pleased with this news, LMAO

  • Not surprising at all, especially if you know anything about the comics.

    Totally serious here.

Comment by Ruby – April 10, 2012 08:24 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Her characters lives a good long life so far in the comics whereas Dale and Shane bite it. So no surprise at all.

Comment by Rick – April 10, 2012 08:32 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I’m glad to hear this. I’ve liked that our sweet, innocent Glenn had somebody in his life to hold him and see him thru tough times and give him a special reason to keep going. And Maggie needs somebody to help her thru her loss of family and teach her how the real world is. (plus, I loved her character on Supernatural). Kick butt Maggie/Lauren!

Comment by Denise – April 21, 2012 10:50 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Shane was by far the most exciting character. Wish he was still in it for another season. Show is still awesome. Maggie is in for the long haul. She is a good character on the show.

Comment by heather – April 10, 2012 10:17 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I agree about Shane. I found him to be the most compelling character on the show.

  • The comics are horribly boring/repetitive.Hope they can make something interesting out of the garbage prison issue.

Comment by Shaun – April 10, 2012 10:26 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • Its not surprising that she would become a major character since her character in the comic did play a big part. those who are true fans of the walking dead before it was a tv show can understand this concept

Comment by rickee vang – April 10, 2012 10:56 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • This is nice, but what of Carol and T-Dog? Are they going to remain “guest stars” until they are inevitably killed off? Both these characters have not been notable at all. Carol said it perfectly at the finale – she’s a burden. And T-Dog – well, he’s just there in the background.
