  4. mdaily says:

Remember when Syfy was actually a niche channel for sci fi genre, and not a bunch of reality programming including WWF Raw (huh?). RIP, BSG, Farscape, Stargate enterprise, Star Trek enterprise, and soon Eureka–shows that created a buzz and cult following. With the end of Eureka, all that is left is Lost Girl and Being Human (US flavor). Mostly it is “Welcome reality junk.” This is what happened when Sci-fi turned into Syfy after becoming part of the NBC “Family”. So sad.

    • AJN says:

err… Raw is on USA… Smackdown is on Syfy… And what the heck is “Stargate enterprise”?
And as for the stuff that is still there in addition to the series that you already mentioned: Sanctuary, Warehouse 13, Haven and Alphas are still on, I believe. So including Eureka there are at least 7 shows on Syfy right now that have that “genre” tinge. Which is probably no less than there were in the times of Farscape (I do miss that show)

      • mdaily says:

As in Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, etc. A shorthand way to say that a show spawned a whole enterprise of other shows. I don’t deny these other shows, but they are sadly becoming a dying breed. Sanctuary has not been renewed yet, haven’t heard about Alphas or Haven. That leaves Warehouse 13, and if SyFy keeps it up, who knows how long that will last? What I am talking about is a trend that I have seen and am saddened about. And call it smack or call it raw (I don’t see the difference, sorry, not my sport), its wrestling. What does that have to do with sci-fi as a genre?

    • Velvet says:

      Don’t forget Warehouse 13.

    • jlynnc says:

So true… I turn it on and it seems like all I get are the same 20 movies rerun, reality reruns, and the rare, much talked about, almost never seen scifi show. Time was I could tape nearly every day a cool marathon of shows, and catch actual scifi shows at night. Oh, well, time and ratings march on.

    • Carmichael says:

Though Eureka’s been (sadly) canceled and Sanctuary hasn’t been renewed yet. I agree though, it needs to do more actual Science Fiction. Oh, I’m sorry Syence Fyction.
