Terra Nova Cancelled By Fox, Series Being Shopped Around to Other Networks

Get More: Cancellations, News

Terra Nova CancelledDinosaurs are headed back onto TV’s endangered species list.

Fox has pulled the plug on its pricey prehistoric drama Terra Nova after one moderately rated season, TVLine has learned.

The show is currently being shopped around to other networks by 20th Century Fox Television.

“Bad news guys, Terra Nova has been cancelled by Fox,” leading man Jason O’Mara tweeted late Monday. “We’re gonna try and get another network to do it. Stand by.”

TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated with the news. Post your eulogies in the comments.

    • I really hope that the show gets picked up by another network it was a great show especially the affects it kind of reminded me a little bit of the probably one of the biggest block buster movie to date Avatar, Some if the special affects like the computer graphics and stuff reminds me of Avatar. I really hope they can find a new home for it.

Pilot wasn’t bad just a bit slow and not what i expected of the show from previews. I looked for in advance as soon as my dvr would let me

    • Whatever, it seems anything show my husband and I like to watch gets cancelled. Studios don’t believe in trying a new show for more than one season anymore. I wonder what reality show will take its place? Seems that’s all we get these days. Don’t the studio heads realize we need some RELIEF FROM REALITY right now? Well, even if a show is given another chance, the season lasts only 4 episodes. Have we really been dumbed down so much that we can’t get more than a few episodes? I don’t like the way things are going these days. Guess I’ll have to go back to reading again!

    • They better bring this show back by far the most interesting new show brought to life it deserves at least 5 seasons for people to have time to get into it. The sales alone on dvd sales will by far be worth the effort

    • I’m kind of new to this whole ratings thing so forgive me for asking: Does this legitimately impact Fringe’s chance of renewal? Obviously it freed up some money and a time slot, but I don’t know how much that actually affects a studio’s decision.

Comment by Alex A – March 5, 2012 08:11 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Fringe’s fate pretty much hinges on Warner Bros giving Fox any deal it wants. Fox made pretty clear noises at the winter TCA meeting… “Fringe is too expensive to keep alive, UNLESS…” unless Warner Bros bends over backwards and cuts the licensing fee even further.

Comment by Donna – March 5, 2012 08:20 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • I think its probably more fans hopeful thinking that it frees up money for Fringe but I would guess Fox already knows how much they will or won’t pay for Fringe.
I think its up to Warner Bros now

Comment by ML – March 5, 2012 08:21 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Like others said, Fringe’s fate depends on if Warner Brothers lowers the licensing fee. So, this does free up quite a lot of money for Fox since Terra Nova was super expensive. Also, there’s the mentality of not wanting to cancel too many shows so that there aren’t too many holes in the schedule for next year. Fox is in kind of a weird situation this year because of so many bubble shows. Alcatraz and The Finder could both go either way, but are leaning more towards cancellation. They really want their remaining shows to succeed, as they moved The Finder to Fridays to give it a fighting chance, and gave Touch the plum post-Idol slot.

Comment by Alex – March 5, 2012 08:30 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • So they kill all the good shows and we are left with crap again? Glee will go down this upcoming season. If Fringe goes, thats it, watched Alcatraz, not good. Makes no sense. The finder is cute but weak storywise. Touch will tank. They should have simply kept Terra Nova. Oh well I shall move to cable more.

Comment by mike – March 5, 2012 08:56 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
          • I don’t agree that Touch will tank. It’s a good idea. It all depends on the writers and if they can consistently come up with good ideas… you’re right; it will probably go belly-side-up… damn DX.

Comment by Jericho Jared – March 19, 2012 11:49 PM PDT
      • Perahps not much, but yes it does. Fox will have a number in mind from WB, but even if they get that number, thats no guarantee they won’t cancel. Other shows going down mean a higher chance that they will accept the smallish profit margin that they would get on Fringe.

Comment by Ben – March 6, 2012 10:24 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • First thing I thought too. Can’t hurt Fringe’s chances. It means there’s more space on the schedule. I’m really hoping for a 10-15 episode final season. Tell the writers how much time they have left and let them wrap up the story right. This is one of my favorite shows of all time and I want to see it have a proper ending.

    • House…Final season
Alcatraz… More mysteries, less answers than Lost..Bubble show
      Fringe….on the bubble.
Please, Please put American Idol on four days a week at 2 hours each night. I am sure that will ensure Fox’s survival.
For me, once house, Terra Nove, Alcatraz and Fringe are gone, the Fox Network will no longer be on my need to tune in to list.

      • 10 million isn’t really bad ratings. I imagine the reason TN didn’t get picked up has more to do with cost than ratings. Hopefully they’ll find a way to slash the budget and present it to a different network (HINT NBC: Grimm+ Terra Nova=Friday Night). I thought it got much better toward the end.

Comment by Ari – March 5, 2012 08:42 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • I cannot see Terra Nova, even with lower costs, on a Friday night. That would be a colossal waste of potential. It’s a shame though; it was the kind of show that had potential and I wanted to see it succeed, even though it wasn’t living up to my expectations. Alcatraz, on the other hand… I wouldn’t be sorry to see that one go. It’s dying already and there’s just no point in dragging it out another season until it actually dies.

Comment by ggny – March 5, 2012 09:06 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
          • I remember reading somewhere that either the finale or the penultimate episode drew just over 10 million in the Live + 7 day DVR ratings. That’s where they’re getting that number. It proves that the Terra Nova audience was growing from week to week and not shrinking. That should have been a sign not to cancel it. NBC better jump all over this.

Comment by JD – March 5, 2012 09:14 PM PDT
          • EW had 10 mil listed on their article with the cancellation notice.

Comment by Ari – March 6, 2012 03:03 AM PDT
          • As per Entertainment Weekly, “It averaged 10.1 million viewers and a 3.6 adult demo rating once you add in a week of DVR playback.” So I guess it didn’t get 10 mil in overnight but rather per week.

Comment by Ari – March 6, 2012 03:05 AM PDT
        • NBC Wednesday Nights – Terra Nova at 8/7c, Grimm at 9/8c, and Awake at 10/9c.

This could also work on Monday nights, but Awake won’t do very well against Castle and Hawaii Five-O. It could possibly be decent counter-programming to the NCIS block on Tuesday nights, but it won’t work for Thursdays and would be too good to waste on Fridays.

    • First off, loved Terra Nova and I shat a brick when I saw the word, “cancelled” while looking for season 2 info not five minutes ago. Second, I friggin’ love fringe, but I started to consistantly miss expisodes of it after Walter asked Olivia not to tell Peter he had, “the glow” around him. And that’s the thing I think: There are plently of people who love this show, but after you miss a few episodes you may have missed a few seasons! There’s just no catching up. I really hope that they don’t cancel it though because it genuinely is one of the best shows I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing.

  • aw, sad for the terra nova fans; i do hope it means fringe now has a better chance at getting renewed for another season. wait. actually, i want at least TWO more seasons of fringe. xD also… alcatraz isn’t thaaat bad.

    • I want a zillion more seasons of Fringe too, but let’s be realistic: that’s not going to happen. The best we can hope for is a shortened final fifth season, like Chuck got. That would make me happy.

      • I’d die happy if we got a season 5 for Fringe

  • I thought was a good show, a combo of Lost meets Jurasic Park. They should cancel Amercian Idol!

  • I guess at the end of the day, it is all about money, and Fox would have had to weigh up money gained vs money lost. Disappointing,as I loved Terra Nova (and not only due to my Landon Liboiron crush), but that’s life. That being said, it was filmed here in Aus and had a heap of Aussie actors in it- any Australian TV companies wanna have a crack? :)

    • Yeah I became an Ashley Zukerman fan watching this and then Rush online.

  • I really hope someone picks it up or it gets a mini-movie or something. It wasn’t stellar but it was really entertaining! My husband and I loved watching it together, and we don’t do that with a lot of shows!

    • you should watch Fringe then.

        • You gotta give Fringe another change. It starts off a little bumpy but mid/late season 1 and thru its current season it blows my mind. I think its the best show on tv.

If you find TN “entertaining” I don’t know how one could find Fringe lacking. It’s the most thrilling thing on tv

          • I watched 3 season of Fringe. Even rewatched the first two. I think I gave it a fair shot.

  • I am so upset that they canceled it, the show was awesome my husband and I watched every Monday we never missed an episode we waited months for it to start up now it’s cancelled. I will no longer watch shows on fox.

  • LOL. Why is anybody surprised? Fox should have kept Lie to Me and The Chicago Code.

  • I called this Crapfest “done” after watching the first 2 or 3 episodes.

    Typical Spielberg SLOP.

  • Why does Fox even bother? Or really why do I ever bother with Fox? If I like a show on Fox it gets cancelled.

  • Damn. Well good luck to the Fringe people anyway, I hope this means you get a break.

  • Not unexpected at all, but still bites, since I think it’s unlikely anyone’s going to pick up a tab that big for mediocre ratings. Personally, I loved the family drama at the heart of it. I went in disliking all the actors and they changed my mind by episode 3.

  • awww bummer… i thought it was a nice show… i mean at first i only watched it bcuz of landon, because i loved him degrassi… and he did a good job!! but like afterwards… i started to like the plot… well there goes another show…

  • I will watch any network that picks this show up. The finale left too many unanswered questions and season 2 surely would have been better than the 1st. If nobody picks it up I’ll just recreate it on my youtube channel with puppets and nutcrackers.

  • Really its stupid you guys at fox keep taking shows out like that ….house and now terra Nova. Like the person with the kid said we parents don’t have much shows we can watch with our kids …well I guess cheers fox

    • I don’t usually watch FOX except for Terra Nova which I thought was great, and House which was becoming a little boring. So now I guess I won’t be watching at all since they cancelled the only two shows I watched on that network!!

Comment by Dora Graham – March 6, 2012 05:08 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • To be fair, Fox wasn’t the one that cancelled House. Hugh Laurie and the EP’s decided to make it the last season. So, that’s not Fox’s fault.

That being said, I hate Fox for doing what it does. I can only hope they give Fringe the last shot it deserves.
