Pilot Castings: Gabrielle Union Is BET's Single Black Female, Pan Am Star Lands ABC Drama

Gabrielle Union has landed the lead in the BET pilot Single Black Female.

Also among the latest pilot castings: a Pan Am star flies to a new drama, a Taxi vet teams with Melissa McCarthy and more.

Single Black Female — from The Game producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil — chronicles the life of the host of a popular Atlanta-based talk show (Union). Deadline first reported the news.

Union’s recent TV credits include an episode of Army Wives, as well as arcs on the short-lived FlashForward and Life.

Karine Vanasse joins Mike Vogel as the second Pan Am star to book a pilot this development season. She’s set to play an aspiring fashion designer in the network’s drama project Scruples, which is based on the novel by Judith Krantz. Natalie Portman and Tony Krantz (24, Felicity) will executive-produce.

• Veteran actor Judd Hirsch (Numb3rs/Taxi) has joined CBS’ Melissa McCarthy-produced comedy, which centers on a single 37-year-old (played by the Mike & Molly star’s hubby Ben Falcone) who loses everything in the real estate collapse and ends up living with his parents. Hirsch will play the father of the downtrodden lead.

• Andre Holland (Friends With Benefits) has been cast as the White House Press Secretary in NBC’s comedy pilot 1600 Penn, starring Bill Pullman as Mr. President.
