Scoop: Smallville's Justin Hartley Cast in The CW's Medical Drama Pilot First Cut

Get More: Casting News, Pilots

It’s no Arrow, but it’ll do.

Smallville alum Justin Hartley has landed the lead in The CW’s medical drama pilot First Cut.

As first reported by our sister site Deadline, the former Passions hunk joins the Grey’s-esque project — which centers on the life of a yet-to-be-cast young female doctor — as Will, a handsome (duh), golden boy surgical intern who all the guys want to be and all the girls want to be with.

Though Smallville fans clamored for Hartley to reprise his role of Green Arrow in Arrow, the netlet’s pilot which promises a modern take on the DC Comics character, the role ultimately went to Hung‘s Stephen Amell.

Jennie Snyder (90210/Lipstick Jungle) will pen and executive-produce the First Cut pilot.

Hartley, meanwhile, will turn up on CW charmer Hart of Dixie this spring as a new love interest for Rachel Bilson’s Zoe Hart.

  • Wonder if it’ll get picked up. I just dont see a medical drama doing so well on the CW. Has the CW ever had a medical drama before?

    • Hart of Dixie?

      • Hart of Dixie is more Gilmore Girls than medical drama. The focus on medicine/doctoring is very small.

    • Justin Hartley just gave First Cut a series order.

      • The CW pilots have been really good this year. With Amber Stevens landing the “Joey Dakota” lead and Justin headlining “First Cut”, I fell in love with both projects. The rest of the pilots (Cult, The Selection, Arrow, Shelter, The Carrie Diaries, Beauty & The Beast) are all strong contenders. Hopefully, TCD won’t make it to series.

  • I will be pissed if they end up canceling Nikita… especially if they cancel it to make room for a show like this.

  • The CW is such a joke. They can’t come up with anything original. So pretty much a Grey’s Anatomy rip-off. The CW has got to go…lol

    • as if Grey´s Anatomy was original…

    • Grey’s Anatomy is itself a ripoff of Scrubs. They even took the ‘Bambi’ nickname from Scrubs!

That sounds like that Will guy who was on Big Brother a long time ago.

  • I like Justin Hartley but this sounds like a boring role… Maybe if they made the character gay it would be interesting.

Comment by A – March 2, 2012 05:22 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Why?

Comment by Phil – March 2, 2012 06:05 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Because it would be hysterical for all the girls that wanna get with him to have absolutely no chance whatsoever.

And he could be hiding it, or playing up the “playboy” role to dodge any questions.

Used ad nauseum, but pretty and perfect and a doctor (while admittedly some people’s ideal mate–gay or straight!) make for BORING television. Personally, I don’t care if he or isn’t a straight character…

If he’s to be a series regular, he’ll need a flaw, twist, or hook for people to give a rat’s @ss. That’s what makes me want to watch.

        • Maybe he could whine incessantly about losing his girlfriend of a few weeks while drunk, or shirtless, or both at the same time? He was pretty good at doing that on Smallville.

  • The CW sure does like to recycle its actors…

  • Would love it if they brought Cassidy Freeman to join him. It’d be about time they get a decent shot.

  • I can’t agree more. If they bring Cassidy Freeman to join him, with a good writing, it can be really good!

    • Oh boy not this again, fans of a certain tiny blonde will be lamenting the same very soon.

Justin would rather be acting with his wife, in all honest. Let the man enjoy his new job with his new co stars, Smallville is over.

Comment by Rocco – March 3, 2012 05:26 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Agreed. So sick of people going on and on about co stars being in a new show together, Smallville fans are particularly annoying with this. Just get over it. Watch your Smallville dvds, thats the best you’re gonna get.

  • Looks like The CW is keen to get ex-Smallville cast members for next season. The network really has lost its ratings mojo since they gave Smallville the boot – maybe they’re hoping ex-Smallvillians will help stop their ratings decline. I wonder if they offered the role to Tom Welling first? (And he was smart enough to say ‘On the CW? After they screwed me on Hellcats? No freaking way!)

Comment by Judy – March 2, 2012 06:36 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Hellcats screwed itself with its lack of direction and unlikeable characters. But if that kind of thinking keeps Tom Welling off tv, I’m not going to complain too much.

  • Honestly, if this gets picked up.. they’d be smart to renew Hart of Dixie and pair it up with this. Hart of Dixie has and shown great potential out of all of the other freshmen shows (Ringer, TSC). But, it sadly never got a huge start that it could have had with them pairing it up with dying Gossip Girl.

They should either move Hart of Dixie to a new night, and pair it up with this, or move GG to a new night, move HoD to 7-8, First Cut 8-9.

  • There is no way Hart of Dixie is a medical drama.

    • Judy is that you?, you seem to have a chip on your shoulder.

Justin Hartley is good at what he does and he is very passionate. He will raise this show up, just like he did with his other former shows.

Comment by Blaine – March 3, 2012 05:29 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • I’d be really upset if they would cancel HoD for this show. It sounds stupid. A High school hospital. So its 90210/DC/Scrubs and GA mixed in one. This pilot, the Carrie Diaries as well as Joey Dakota sound very underwhelming. The others do sound better.

Well I don’t really care what they pick up as long as they give HoD another chance.

Comment by Jen – March 3, 2012 03:45 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • They should cancel that sillyHOD show, its a meaningless show going nowhere. The ratings are going to continue falling, no room for improvement.

CW should cancel that show and get Wilson Bethel to this pilot or Arrow.

Comment by RonD – March 3, 2012 05:34 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Hart of Dixie has plenty of room for improvement. It’s ratings are better than Ringer/Nikita and it’s DVR/iTunes numbers are always on top and high.

  • All of the pilots the CW order sound boring and not interesting at all. Justin deserves better. As long as they keep my favorite show, I won’t complain

  • Bring ALAINA HUFFMAN to this show, she would be a great addition. Beautiful and great actress. Smallville’s loss.

She is in need of a show right now, just get her any show, if not this one CW!!!.

  • Justin has plenty of Charisma, but it doesn’t appeal to everybody, apparently. He’s a good actor but you need to have good writing to make something really work. On Smallville the writers were good , but some of the other stuff he has been in, well let’s just say, yawn! I really like him and will be glad to see how his character develops.
