Pilot Scoop: Dane Cook Lands Lead In NBC Comedy, Christopher Lloyd Joins Fools and More

Funnyman Dane Cook has been tapped to star in the NBC comedy pilot Next Caller Please.

The project centers on a Colorado radio host (played by Cougar Town‘s Collette Wolfe) who scores a dream gig with a New York-based satellite radio station. Alas, her excitement is dashed when she meets Cook’s character, her abrasive, hard-drinking and sexist new co-host.

Weeds producer Stephen Falk penned the pilot.

In other pilot news from our sister site Deadline:

Back to the Future vet Christopher Lloyd will star opposite John Leguizamo in ABC’s Only Fools and Horses, which chronicles the misadventures of two brothers and their grandfather (Lloyd).

• Showtime’s drama pilot Masters of Sex has landed Beau Bridges to play University Chancellor Barton Scully, the boss of Michael Sheen’s sexuality pioneer William Masters.

Roswell‘s Majandra Delfino will play Mandy Moore’s sister in an untitled ABC comedy produced by Date Night‘s Shawn Levy.

• Tiffany Hines (Nikita) has nabbed a role in ABC’s fashion-based soap Americana, playing a beautiful medical student and the best friend of Ashley Greene’s Alice.

• Robert Wisdom — who should be familiar to fans of The Wire, Supernatural and Burn Notice — has joined ABC’s music-set family soap Nashville. He’ll play a charismatic candidate for mayor of the Tennessee capital.

• Cary Elwes has joined Prairie Dogs, an ABC comedy pilot starring Kal Penn as an office lacky who embraces having his identity stolen. Per EW.com, the Princess Bride/Saw alum will play the company’s mysterious head of the design department.

  1. Julie says:

If things continue this way I might be a full-time ABC pilot girl next fall!
But count me in for anything with Dane Cook even on NBC! Love the guy!!

  2. morgan says:

Is it just me or does the pilot “Next Caller Please” sound identical to the plot of that Katherine Heigl/Gerard Butler, “The Ugly Truth?” All they’ve done to make it “original” is turn it into a radio show.

  3. Shann says:

Majandra Delfino and Mandy Moore as sisters? That’s awesome! I foresee some singing in the show’s future should it pass the pilot stage. And I agree with morgan – sounds like “The Ugly Truth” but I liked that movie and I like Dane Cook so I’m in!

  4. R.T. says:

Really, NBC? Another offensive and prejudiced comedy? Have you learned nothing from Outsourced, Whitney, or Chelsea? Your comedy schedule is otherwise fantastic, diverse, and hilarious. WHY DO YOU DO THIS?
Also The Ugly Truth was an awful, disgusting, misogynistic movie, and was poorly written beyond that.
ALSO ALSO Prarie Dogs and Only Fools look decent. Maybe ABC will finally grab my attention for once.

  5. Brit says:

Only Fools… is NOT going to work unless they completely ignore the original. It may as well be called something else.

  6. James says:

I agree with Brit, although Christopher Lloyd is an absolute legend, an american ‘only fools and horses’ won’t be able to live up to the english version which ran for years and is a beloved show adored by a generation.
What next.. an American Sherlock? Oh wait….
It’s only time before they American-ise Doctor Who like they did with Torchwood
