Exclusive: Bryan Cranston Headed to Modern Family (But There's a Catch)

Breaking Bad meth chef Bryan Cranston is returning to his sitcom roots with a gig on Modern Family, but there’s a twist: He’ll remain off screen the entire time.

Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that the former Malcolm in the Middle patriarch is nearing a deal to direct an upcoming episode of the ABC comedy.

This would hardly be the first time the Emmy winner has sat in the director’s chair. In addition to helming seven episodes of Malcolm during the show’s nearly-seven year run, Cranston has directed two episodes of Breaking Bad.

A Modern Family rep declined to comment.

I would hope that if he is going to direct Modern Family that he would at least make some sort of cameo appearance. Ben Savage directs Happy Endings and yet he has made an appearance on the show.
