Pilot Scoop: CBS Picks Up Dramas About Ralph Lamb, Private Eye Mom and a Cop/Hacker Team

CBS on Wednesday doled out another three pilot orders, one of which is for a drama that sounds a bit similar to this winter’s buzzy flick, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

From former L Word showrunner Ilene Chaiken and Matrix EP Joel Silver, Quean is a drama pilot centering on an edgy, punk-rock girl who uses her hacker skills to help an Oakland-based detective solve crimes. A li’l Lisbeth Salander-ish, no?

The network also picked up an untitled 1960s period piece about famed rodeo cowboy-turned-Las Vegas sheriff Ralph Lamb (to be executive-produced and written by Nicholas Pileggi and Greg Walker), plus Applebaum, a drama about a former public defender who avoids the stay-at-home-mom blues by becoming a private investigator. The latter, based on the Mommy Track Mysteries book series, will be directed and exec-produced by filmmaker Christopher Columbus.

Prior to these pickups, CBS ordered Black Widow, a cop drama pilot from CSI exec producer Carol Mendelsohn, and Super Fun Night, a comedy from Conan O’Brien starring Bridesmaids‘ Rebel Wilson.

I have to say none of the pilots from any of the networks for next year sound overly enticing. Guess we just got lucky with this year’s offerings. And is it just me or does the headline make people think of The Cape with the cop/hacker team? I mean I know it’s not the same but it made me think of it.

  2. K says:

A total Girl with the Dragon Tattoo rip-off indeed. Stieg Larsson called…he wants his novel series back.

All of these series sound yawn-inducing to me.

  3. dee123 says:

What the hell? Why so many crappy knockoffs?

  4. GK says:

I guess I’ll have lots of free time to catch up on old shows next season by the looks of things.

  5. dockery says:

Didn’t CBS order the Elementary pilot (aka Sherlock knock-off) as well? Or did they just put it into development? No matter, next season’s new offerings look like a snore.

  6. Paul says:

Can’t CBS do anything original? Their pandering to the lowest common denominator might be working for now, but even morons will tire of CBS shows eventually.

  7. pv says:

Nothing really original here…but the hacker show could have potential with Chaiken and Silver helming it

  8. sarah says:

For me none of these sound interesting. However these shows may not get picked up. The official new show list comes out in the summer…I will wait for that to read all the new shows on all the networks but I do like to see what they ideas are for fall shows
