ABC Comedy Scoop: Whoopi Visits The Middle, Modern Family's Lily Drops the F-Bomb and More

The showrunners for ABC’s current Wednesday comedy block held court at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Tuesday, and amid much analysis of the state of TV sitcoms, there was a smattering of scoop to be found.

ABC Boss Talks Cougar Town‘s Return, ‘Relocation’ For Revenge

The Middle‘s Eileen Heisler got the ball rolling by sharing that Whoopi Goldberg (The View) would be guest-starring toward season’s end, playing Sue’s guidance counselor.

Modern Family man Steven Levitan then went on to share that an upcoming of his show would find li’l Lily blurting the F-word. “We don’t actually get into [where she picked it up],” he said. “We just get into the fact that sometimes what happens in life is kids stumble on a word, and when they see the reaction it becomes their go-to word for a while.” (In full disclosure, Levitan said the girl who plays Lily actually said “fudge” on-camera, then was bleeped and blurred.)

Also ahead on Modern Family is a new leg in the Fizbo the Clown story, when Bobby Cannavale guest-stars as the other half of the onetime comedy team known as Fizbo & Louis. “There was a bitter break-up, like Martin and Lewis,” Levitan shared. “And [he and Cam] get back together because they’re attending a funeral… of a clown mentor.”

Is it sad that I remember an episode of Growing Pains where baby Chrissy is constantly saying the F word :(

  2. Nadine says:

Looking forward to Whoopi on The Middle. Love her, love the show. Eden Sher as Sue is so funny.

    • Person says:

I think that Modern Family, Community, AND Parks & Recreation are the best comedies on TV. They are all great in their own way it would be nice if Community got some Emmy awards though. It’s always the biggest snub.

  3. Russ says:

Does anyone else think that Modern Family is only okay? I mean I like most episodes but I don’t think everything the show does is amazing, I find Community and Parks and Rec funnier.

    • Ari says:

Russ, I totally agree with you. I really loved Modern Family’s first season but the second season just didn’t have the same spark and the third has been even more lacking. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still funny, but I don’t watch an episode of Modern Family and wish it had been longer. I don’t find myself looking forward to the next episode in the same way that I look forward to P&R. I can see why Modern Family gets so much acclaim. It’s very vanilla and people love vanilla.

I wonder if they get charged with sexual child abuse.
